Four types of commonly used sulphonate-based surfactants (alkane sulphonates, alpha-olefin sulphonates, sulphosuccinates and methyl ester sulphonates) were tested for their aerobic and anaerobic biodegradability as well as for their toxicity to Daphnia magna and Photobacterium phosphoreum to assess the effect of the surfactant structure on those properties. Aerobic biodegradation was evaluated by means of the CO2 headspace test and anaerobic biodegradation was assessed by a method based on the ECETOC test. All the surfactants tested were readily biodegraded under aerobic conditions. No clear effect of the surfactant structures on the toxicity to the aquatic organisms tested was found. The most significant differences in the surfactants studied were observed in their behaviour under anaerobic conditions. Alkane sulphonates, alpha-olefin sulphonates and methyl ester sulphonates were not mineralized in lab anaerobic digesters despite the fact that the last one showed a certain degree of primary degradation. Nevertheless, these surfactants did not significantly inhibit methanogenic activity at concentrations up to 15 g surfactant/kg dry sludge, a concentration that is much higher than the expected concentrations of these surfactants in real anaerobic digesters. Sulphosuccinates showed a high level of primary biodegradation in anaerobic conditions. However, linear alkyl sulphosuccinates were completely mineralized whereas branched alkyl sulphosuccinates achieved percentages of ultimate biodegradation ≤50%.  相似文献

In many anaerobic digestion processes for the treatment of the sludge produced in wastewater treatment plants, the hydrolysis of the organic matter has been identified as the rate limiting step. This study is focused on the effect of ultrasonic pretreatment of raw sewage sludge before being fed to the mesophilic and the thermophilic anaerobic digestion. From particle size reduction, COD disintegration degree and biodegradability test, 11,000kJ/kg TS was estimated as the optimal specific energy in ultrasonic pretreatment. Moreover, the use of pretreated sludge improved significantly the COD removal efficiency and biogas production in lab-scale anaerobic digesters when compared with the performance without pretreatment, specially under mesophilic conditions. During ultrasonic pretreatment, the diffusion of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) compounds to the aqueous phase was stated by a reduction in the pretreated sludge micropollutants content. With sonication, naphthalene was better removed than without this pretreatment, particularly in the mesophilic digester. However, pyrene removal remained at same efficiency level with and without ultrasonic pretreatment.  相似文献

Linear alkylbenzene sulphonates (LAS) are a group of anionic surfactants, characterised by having both a hydrophobic and a hydrophilic group. LAS is one of the major ingredients of synthetic detergents and surfactants and is used world-wide for both domestic and industrial applications. LAS is relatively rapidly aerobically degraded, but only very slowly or not at all degraded under anaerobic conditions. Therefore, LAS can be found in very high concentrations in most sewage sludge and enter the soil compartment as a result of sludge application. LAS can be found in elevated concentrations in soil immediately after sludge amendment, but a half-life of approximately 1-3 weeks will generally prevent accumulation in soil and biota. The concentration in soils that have not received sewage sludge recently, is generally less than 1 mg kg-1 and not more than 5 mg LAS kg-1. This is below the lowest concentration of LAS where effects have been observed in the laboratory. The laboratory data is in accordance with field studies using aqueous solutions of the sodium salt of LAS. However, observations of the ecological impact of sewage sludge applications or application of LAS spiked into sludge indicates a lower toxicity of LAS when applied in sludge. On the basis of the information reviewed in this paper, it is concluded that LAS can be found in high concentrations in sewage sludge, but that the relatively rapid aerobic degradation and the reduced bioavailability when applied via sludge, most likely will prevent LAS from posing a threat to terrestrial ecosystems on a long term basis.  相似文献

The fate of pentachlorophenol (PCP) during anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge solids was tested in a three phase protocol. Phase I involved acclimation; Phase II investigated biodegradation in semicontinuous-flow, stirred-tank reactors at solids retention times of 10, 20 and 40 days; phase III assessed the importance of nonbiological removal mechanisms and collected additional data concerning the extent of biodegradation. PCP was found to inhibit methanogenesis in unacclimated cultures at concentrations in excess of 200 μg l−1 and thus acclimation of the digesters to PCP required very gradual increases in the influent concentration thereby allowing enrichment of organisms capable of degrading PCP. Once acclimation was achieved, digesters receiving influent containing 5.0 mg l−1 PCP achieved stable operation with effluent PCP concentrations below 5 μg l−1 at all retention times studied. Sorption was shown to be unimportant in PCP removal. Volatilization was considered to be unimportant based upon results obtained in forced aeration studies. This suggested that PCP was subject to at least primary biodegradation. Other evidence collected during the study indicated that more complete biodegradation probably was occurring.  相似文献

Direct discharge of untreated sewage to surface waters is a common practice in many parts of the world. However, relatively little is known about the behaviour of synthetic organic pollutants under these conditions. This paper describes a sampling campaign designed to track changes in water quality in a surface water system in Vientiane (Lao PDR) receiving significant quantities of untreated waste water. The study was based on following in-channel transport using a fluorescent tracer injected as a pulse, with a focus on the anionic surfactant linear alkylbenzene sulphonate (LAS) and ammonia. Water samples were collected at a number of stations with sampling times estimated to coincide with solute time-of-travel. The reduction in LAS concentration with flow-time could be approximated by first-order kinetics with a half life of about 7 h. Free ammonia concentrations decreased more slowly than LAS and remained above the level believed to be toxic for sensitive aquatic species along the entire channel. Changes in the ratios of LAS alkyl chain homologues to total LAS concentrations suggest a preferential removal of longer chain lengths. The role of biodegradation in the removal of LAS was confirmed by the presence of LAS metabolites (sulphophenylcarboxylates, SPCs) which increased systematically (as a fraction of LAS remaining) with flow-time.  相似文献

以频率为40kHz,声能密度为0.1、0.3和0.6W/mL的超声波对城市污水处理厂的剩余污泥进行超声破解,研究破解效应对污泥两相厌氧消化工艺去除有机物的效果、生物气产量和产气率的影响。结果表明,超声破解能显著提高污泥的溶解性COD(SCOD)浓度、对有机物的去除率、生物气产量和产气率,缩短两相厌氧消化工艺的污泥停留时间。污泥在声能密度为0.6w/mL的条件下破解60min后,SCOD从440mg/L提高到8844mg/L,COD的溶出率达到32.0%。对原污泥和经超声波破解60min的污泥进行两相厌氧消化试验,结果显示:经超声波破解后,对COD和总挥发性固体(VS)的去除率较原污泥分别提高了一半左右,产气量和产气率分别增长了125.3%和72.5%。  相似文献

Oleic acid toxicity and biodegradability were followed during long-term operation of two similar anaerobic fixed-bed units. When treating an oleate based effluent, the sludge from the bioreactor that was acclimated with lipids during the first operation period, showed a higher tolerance to oleic acid toxicity (IC50 = 137 mg/l) compared with the sludge fed with a non-fat substrate (IC50 = 80 mg/l). This sludge showed also the highest biodegradation capacity of oleic acid, achieving maximum methane production rates between 33 and 46 mlCH4(STP)/gVS.day and maximum percentages of methanization between 85 and 98% for the range of concentrations between 500 and 900 mg oleate/l. When oleate was the sole carbon source fed to both digesters, the biomass became encapsulated with organic matter, possibly oleate or an intermediate of its degradation, e.g. stearate that was degraded at a maximum rate of 99 mlCH4(STP)/gVS.day. This suggests the possibility of using adsorption-degradation cycles for the treatment of LCFA based effluents. Both tolerance to toxicity and biodegradability of oleic acid were improved by acclimatization with lipids or oleate below a threshold concentration.  相似文献

Adsorption onto sewage sludge is an important process for the elimination of tributyltin (TBT) from wastewater. However as the disposal of sewage sludge to agricultural land is a significant route for recycling biosolids, there exists an issue as to whether the potential long-term build-up of organotins in agricultural soil is acceptable, from a human health and environmental point of view. For the sustainable use of biosolids in agriculture it is essential to control and reduce the quantities of persistent pollutants such as organotins in sewage sludge. In this study, a sampling program was designed to establish the levels of TBT (and other organotins) in sewage sludge and their reduction during anaerobic treatment and processing prior to disposal. Experiments were also undertaken to assess the fate of TBT in laboratory scale anaerobic digesters where the influence of digester operating parameters could be evaluated. Organotin concentrations were determined using capillary gas chromatography with flame photometric detection. The results demonstrated that the majority of TBT remained concentrated in the solid phase (sewage sludge). Concentrations of TBT in sewage sludge were approximately 18 mg kg(-1) (dry weight) and both laboratory experiments and fieldwork demonstrated that degradation of TBT during anaerobic digestion of sludge was minimal.  相似文献

The performance of an alternately operated activated sludge wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) has been investigated with respect to six phthalates, nonylphenol (NP) and nonylphenol diethoxylate (NPDE) and linear alkylbenzene sulphonates (LAS). Samples of raw sewage, primary and secondary sludge and treated water were collected during an 8-day period in May 1999 and analysed for dissolved and sorbed substances. To evaluate the system performance with respect to substance removal through biodegradation and sorption to sludge the measured data were applied in a model describing the different bioreactors as one single reactor, corresponding to the concepts of, e.g. SimpleTreat. The most abundant of the investigated phthalates was di-(2-ethylhexyl)-phthalate (DEHP) with a measured mean inlet flow of 240g/day. Two percent of this amount was found in the treated water, 70% was biodegraded and 28% was found in the sludge. For LAS the mean inlet flow was 20,300g/day, of which less than 1% was found in the treated water, 84% was biodegraded and 15% was found in the sludge. The mean inlet flow of NP and NPDE was 44 and 590g/day, of which 4% and 2% was found in the treated water, 80% was biodegraded for both substances, and 16% and 18% was found in the sludge, respectively. The WWTP removal of the investigated substances was thus high compared to other studies of conventional activated sludge WWTPs. The simple model set-up presents a strong tool for predicting substance removal and system sensitivity related to changes in the inlet conditions, such as concentrations and flow. Furthermore, it allows the inclusion of complex alternately operated WWTPs in risk assessment tools such as e.g. SimpleTreat.  相似文献

城市污水厂的剩余污泥经槽式超声波反应器预处理后,被投加到小型高温厌氧反应器中进行消化处理,通过改变投配率来控制厌氧消化时间,研究超声破解对高温厌氧消化反应速率和效率的影响。试验结果表明,与未经预处理的污泥相比,超声破解能够明显提高污泥高温厌氧消化的生物气产量及对有机物的去除率。控制组在停留时间为20d时对TCOD的去除率为37.29%,而破解污泥在第8天时的去除率就达到了39.60%。这表明污泥经超声破解后其厌氧消化性能得到改善,超声破解不但可以提高厌氧消化对有机物的去除率,而且可以缩短反应时间,在不影响厌氧消化反应正常进行的条件下,还实现了污泥的减量化。  相似文献

In this paper we report on the performances of full-scale conventional activated sludge (CAS) treatment and two pilot-scale membrane bioreactors (MBRs) in eliminating various pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) belonging to different therapeutic groups and with diverse physico-chemical properties. Both aqueous and solid phases were analysed for the presence of 31 pharmaceuticals included in the analytical method. The most ubiquitous contaminants in the sewage water were analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs ibuprofen (14.6-31.3 μg/L) and acetaminophen (7.1-11.4 μg/L), antibiotic ofloxacin (0.89-31.7 μg/L), lipid regulators gemfibrozil (2.0-5.9 μg/L) and bezafibrate (1.9-29.8 μg/L), β-blocker atenolol (0.84-2.8 μg/L), hypoglycaemic agent glibenclamide (0.12-15.9 μg/L) and a diuretic hydrochlorothiazide (2.3-4.8 μg/L). Also, several pharmaceuticals such as ibuprofen, ketoprofen, diclofenac, ofloxacin and azithromycin were detected in sewage sludge at concentrations up to 741.1, 336.3, 380.7, 454.7 and 299.6 ng/g dry weight. Two pilot-scale MBRs exhibited enhanced elimination of several pharmaceutical residues poorly removed by the CAS treatment (e.g., mefenamic acid, indomethacin, diclofenac, propyphenazone, pravastatin, gemfibrozil), whereas in some cases more stable operation of one of the MBR reactors at prolonged SRT proved to be detrimental for the elimination of some compounds (e.g., β-blockers, ranitidine, famotidine, erythromycin). Moreover, the anti-epileptic drug carbamazepine and diuretic hydrochlorothiazide by-passed all three treatments investigated.Furthermore, sorption to sewage sludge in the MBRs as well as in the entire treatment line of a full-scale WWTP is discussed for the encountered analytes. Among the pharmaceuticals encountered in sewage sludge, sorption to sludge could be a relevant removal pathway only for several compounds (i.e., mefenamic acid, propranolol, and loratidine). Especially in the case of loratidine the experimentally determined sorption coefficients (Kds) were in the range 2214-3321 L/kg (mean). The results obtained for the solid phase indicated that MBR wastewater treatment yielding higher biodegradation rate could reduce the load of pollutants in the sludge. Also, the overall output load in the aqueous and solid phase of the investigated WWTP was calculated, indicating that none of the residual pharmaceuticals initially detected in the sewage sludge were degraded during the anaerobic digestion. Out of the 26 pharmaceutical residues passing through the WWTP, 20 were ultimately detected in the treated sludge that is further applied on farmland.  相似文献

Anaerobic biodegradation and inhibitory effects of nonionic and anionic surfactants on methanogenic fermentation were tested in incubation experiments with anoxic sediment samples and sewage sludge. Alkylsulfonates and alkylbenzenesulfonates were not degraded but inhibited methanogenesis from sludge constituents at concentrations ≥10 mgl−1. Sodium dodecylsulfate was at least partly degraded after adaptation at concentrations 100 mgl−1 and the sulfate group was reduced to sulfide. The polyethyleneglycol moiety of alkylphenolethoxylates was fermented to methane at concentrations 500 mgl−1 whereas the alkylphenol residue probably remained unchanged. Alkylethoxylates were completely degraded to methane and CO2 at concentrations up to 1.0 gl−1. Complete anaerobic degradation of this surfactant type to methane, CO2, and traces of acetate and propionate was demonstrated in a lab scale anaerobic fixed-bed reactor, either with prereduced mineral salts medium or with air-saturated artificial wastewater. This process lends itself as a suited, inexpensive means for treatment of wastewaters containing enhanced loads of nonionic surfactants, e.g. from the surfactant manufacturing or processing industry.  相似文献

Microwave (MW) irradiation and conventional heating (CH) at 96 °C was successful in disrupting the complex waste activated sludge (WAS) floc structure and releasing extra- and intra-cellular biopolymers, such as protein and sugars from activated sludge flocs into soluble phase along with solubilization of particulate chemical oxygen demand (COD). Soluble CODs of CH and MW-irradiated WAS were 361±45% and 143±34% higher and resulted in 475±3% and 211±2% higher cumulative biogas productions (CBP) relative to the control at the end of 23 days of mesophilic anaerobic digestion, respectively. Ultrafiltration (UF) was used to characterize the soluble molecular weight (Mw) distributions of control (unpretreated), CH and MW-irradiated WAS. Depending on the Mw fraction, the range of substrate volumetric utilization rate increases from anaerobic digesters was between 94% and 84% for CH and 26–113% for MW compared to the control for the first nine days of the digestion. Digesters treating high Mw (>300 kDa) materials resulted in smaller biodegradation rate constants, k, indicating that microorganisms require a longer time to utilize high Mw fractions which are most likely cell wall fragments and exopolymers.  相似文献

简述了生物嗜热酶溶解(S—TE)污泥减量技术的原理、嗜热菌的特性和优选、污泥溶解和后续污水污泥处理集成工艺(好氧减量和厌氧产气)的主要影响因素,介绍了近年来S—TE技术应用的最新研究理论和试验成果,并提出了研究和应用中亟待解决的问题。相对于臭氧氧化、氯氧化、热水解、机械破碎、超声波和投加酶等方法,S-TE技术更经济高效、安全,而且能耗低、易于控制,结合后续工艺不仅可以实现污泥的“零排放”,还可同时实现污染物的高效生物降解或沼气产能的增加,应用前景良好。  相似文献

将碱渣与城市污水处理厂的剩余污泥按不同的比例均匀混合后,进行厌氧消化试验,并根据消化液中SCOD、pH值及产气量等指标的变化,分析了碱渣对污泥厌氧消化性能的影响.结果表明:在碱渣添加量<8.25 g/L时,对污泥厌氧消化中的水解反应有较大的促进作用,溶出的有机物可生物降解性好;在试验的碱渣添加量范围内,厌氧消化液的pH值维持在7~8,显示碱渣对污泥消化产生的有机酸具有一定的缓冲作用;当碱渣添加量为3.30 g/L时,产气量和甲烷产量最大且厌氧消化反应速度最快,与未添加碱渣的相比则甲烷产量提高了约37.9%.碱渣中含有的碱性物质对污泥厌氧消化有较大的促进作用.  相似文献

Removal of bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate at a sewage treatment plant   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) concentrations were measured at different stages in a full-scale sewage treatment plant (STP) and mass balances were calculated. The DEHP load to treatment process coming from the sewer system and the internal load comprising returned supernatants and filtrate from sludge treatment and excess secondary sludge were at the same level. The DEHP removal efficiency from the water phase at the STP was on average 94% of sewage DEHP, the main removal process being sorption to primary and secondary sludges. On average 29% of DEHP was calculated to be removed in the biological nitrifying-denitrifying activated sludge process, which was much less than expected from laboratory biodegradation studies described in literature. Monoethylhexyl phthalate, the primary biotransformation product of DEHP, was not detected at any treatment stage. Approximately 32% of DEHP in sewage was removed during anaerobic digestion of the sludge, while 32% remained in the digested and dewatered sludge.  相似文献

Microtox is a frequent toxicity tool for the screening of wastewaters discharged into wastewater treatment plants. There is currently an increasing controversy between this test and others using activated sludge. A Microtox and electrolytic respirometry comparative study for toxicity determination has been performed. Seven organic and five inorganic toxic compounds have been assessed for comparing both methods. Microtox proved to have a higher sensitivity to toxicants but was less representative of effects on activated sludge compared to respirometry. For instance, assays accomplished with LAS, a biodegradable reference surfactant, showed a toxic effect by Microtox but good biodegradability and no toxicity in respirometry. This could be explained by the different nature of the biological material used, as Microtox utilises the seawater Vibrio fischeri, whereas respirometry uses the bacterial consortium in activated sludge. For the evaluation of the potential toxicity of a compound on a WWTP, the preferred biological material be used should be activated sludge itself. Results obtained with any other biological material would be just an approach to reality.  相似文献

Distribution of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) in sewage wastes at a municipal sewage treatment plant was studied, showing that the great bulk of PCBs entering such a treatment plant become adsorbed onto the grit chamber solids and the sludge that is passed from the anaerobic digesters. When appreciable quantities of PCBs are present in sewage, as was the case in this study, significant quantities can nevertheless pass with the effluents discharged from the treatment plant. The PCB concentrations in the treatment plant waters undergoing secondary and tertiary treatment tend to be consistent with the limited solubility properties of the PCBs. However, appreciably higher concentrations can be found in the sediments of waters receiving treatment plant discharges and bioaccumulation in fish is demonstrated readily. Also described are quantitative data on PCBs in soils fertilized with PCB-contaminated sludge.  相似文献

Occurrence of selected surfactants in untreated and treated sewage   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Several surfactants were monitored in treated and untreated sewage in nine municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in western Austria. The nine sampled WWTPs cover a wide variety referring to size and applied treatment technology. The investigation focused on linear alkylbenzene sulphonate (LAS), quaternary ammonia compounds (QAC), nonylphenol (NP), octylphenol (OP), nonylphenolmono- (NP(1)EO) and -diethoxylates (NP(2)EO). Whereas LAS, NP, OP and NP(1,2)EO were analysed separately in the liquid phase and in the solid phase, the QACs were measured in the total sample. Total influent concentrations of LAS varied between 2.4 mg l(-1) up to 6.7 mg l(-1) whereas total effluent concentrations were in the lower microg l(-1) range (11-50 microg l(-1)). Whichever the type of treatment, a clear removal during treatment was observed. Solid liquid distribution coefficients K(d) were calculated for untreated sewage. The calculated K(d) values varied between 1300 and 3900 l kg(-1). OP was of minor importance with total influent concentrations below 1microg l(-1). NP and NP(1,2)EO were present in all analysed influents in concentrations between 1 and 35microg l(-1). Effluent concentrations were notably lower than the measured influent concentrations. K(d) values for NP varied between 500 and 6600 l kg(-1), for NP(1)EO between 800 and 2700 l kg(-1) and for NP(2)EO between 100 and 1800 l kg(-1). From the QACs several alkyl benzyl (BAC), dialkyl (DDAC) and trialkyl (ATAC) ammonium chlorides with varying alkyl chain lengths were analysed. Highest total concentrations in the influents to the WWTPs were observed for the BAC-C12 and the ATAC-C16 homologues. Effluent concentrations were notably lower compared to influent concentrations, indicating removal by adsorption and/or biodegradation. The influence of the removal by adsorption increased with increasing alkyl chain length.  相似文献
