The allelopathic effects of root exudates ofBidens pilosa L. on seedling growth ofLactuca sativa L.,Phaseolus vulgaris L.,Zea mays L., andSorghum bicolor (L.) Moench were studied using a root exudate recirculating system that allows continuous exposure of crop plants to allelopathic chemicals. This system maintains an undisturbed rhizosphere and eliminates competition and physical contact between the donor and acceptor plants. Comparison of responses to hydrophobic and hydrophilic root exudates is made possible by removal of hydrophobic compounds using XAD-4. Treatments consisted ofB. pilosa, B. pilosa with an Amberlite XAD-4 resin column attached to the donor pot to remove hydrophobic allelochemicals, and a donor pot without weeds.B. pilosa significantly inhibited seedling growth of all crop species tested. The crop species varied in response to the root exudates, withL. sativa being most sensitive. Larger and olderB. pilosa plants caused greater inhibition of seedling growth ofL. sativa andP. vulgaris than did smaller (younger)B. pilosa plants.B. pilosa with XAD-4 caused significantly less inhibition to all crop species, exceptZ. mays, thanB. pilosa without XAD-4, indicating that the hydrophobic exudates played an important role in the allelopathic growth inhibition. Variability in species response toB. pilosa with and without XAD-4 was probably due to differences in sensitivity to hydophobic and hydrophilic allelochemicals.Supported by a grant under USDA Agreement No. 83-CRSR-2-2293. The effect of cacalol and extracts (water and petroleum ether) derived from the roots ofPsacalium decompositum (Asteraceae) on the germination and radicle growth of two plants.Amaranthus hypochondriacus (Amaranthaceae) andEchinochloa crusgalli (Poaceae), and on the radial growth of four phytopathogenic fungi is described. The activity of two cacalol derivatives (methyl cacalol and cacalol acetate) was also investigated. Germination ofA. hypochondriacus was inhibited by almost all the treatments. The extracts and cacalol produced a significant inhibition of radicle growth ofA. hypochondriacus andE. crusgalli. Cacalol acetate showed a specific inhibition onE. crusgalli, and methyl cacalol significantly inhibited the growth ofA. hypochondriacus. In general, antifungal activity depended upon the target fungi and the concentration of each treatment. Cacalol had also effects on the morphology and coloration of the fungal mycelium. The bioactivity shown by the extracts ofPsacalium decompositum on the tested seeds and fungi is mainly due to their content in cacalol.  相似文献

The potent phytotoxic trichothecene roridins and baccharinoids occur naturally in the Brazilian plants,Baccharis coridifolia andB. megapotamica. Biosynthesis of roridins inB. coridifolia appears to be linked to pollination, and the phytotoxins then accumulate in the seed. The roles of the phytotoxins in pollination, seed maturation, and germination of theBaccharis species were investigated. The high production of roridins occurred only in seeds resulting from intraspecific pollination, and the concentration of the toxins in the seeds generally increased with seed maturity. Removal of seed coats from trichothecene-producing BrazilianBaccharis species (B. coridifolia andB. megapotamica) and non-trichothecene-producing AmericanBaccharis species (B. halimifolia andB. glutinosa) resulted in improved seed germination ofB. halimifolia andB. glutinosa but complete inhibition of seed germination ofB. coridifolia andB. megapotamica. Addition of seed coat extracts of the BrazilianBaccharis species of dilute solutions (10–6g/ml) of roridins or baccharinoids to the decoated seeds ofB. coridifolia andB. megapotamica resulted in germination, while seeds ofB. halimifolia andB. glutinosa were killed by the phytotoxins. Roridins interacted with gibberellic acid, a germination promoter, but not with abscisic acid, a germination inhibitor. The results from this study suggest that macrocyclic trichothecenes have a regulatory role(s) on reproduction and germination of BrazilianBaccharis species in their natural habitat.  相似文献

Biological activity of leaves, fruits and extract of the African shrubBoscia senegalensis (PERS.) LAM. ex Poir. was evaluated against five stored-grain insects. When added to cowpeas at 2–4% (w/w), fresh ground fruits and leaves caused 80–100% mortality inCallosobruchus maculants (F.) adults and significantly reduced both emergence and damage of the F1 progeny. Acetone fruit extract exhibited a potent fumigant effect onProstephanus truncatus Horn, C.maculatus, andSitotroga cerealella OLIV.; with LT50 values of 3.8, 2.3, and below 1.5 hr, respectively. LC50 determination forB. senegalensis fruits and leaves as well as pure methylisothiocyanate (MITC) onTribolium castaneum HERBST,Sitophilus zeamais MOTSCH. andC. maculatus showed a differential response of the insects to plant parts or MITC. Quantitative dosage ofBoscia active components and LC50 values obtained for the plant tissues, compared to those of pure molecules, indicate that the biological activity ofB. senegalensis is due to the liberation of MITC from a glucosinolate precursor glucocapparin contained inBoscia fruits and leaves.  相似文献

In laboratory tests the allelopathic potential ofErica vagans, Calluna vulgaris, andDaboecia cantabrica was determined. Aqueous extracts of flowers ofD. cantabrica and leaves ofC. vulgaris inhibit root and hypocotyl growth of red clover, the former causing 51% inhibition of germination. Intact aerial parts of the Ericaceae here studied drastically reduced the growth of red clover and 100% inhibition of germination was caused by flowers ofD. cantabrica. Inhibition of aqueous extracts remains after Chromatographic separation, and two well-defined inhibition zones may be observed. Hydrosoluble organic compounds (phenol-like compounds) could probably be responsible for the inhibitions detected.  相似文献

A Petri dish bioassay previously used to examine food preferences in planorbid snails was used to study intraspecific and interspecific chemoattraction inBiomphalaria glabrata (albino strain, M-line) andHelisoma trivolvis (Colorado strain) snails.B. glabrata snails showed significant intraspecific chemoattraction in the absence of visual cues and snail thigmotaxis.H. trivolvis snails also showed significant intraspecific chemoattraction. Interspecific chemoattraction between these species occurred in the bioassay, suggesting that the chemoattractants were not species specific. Artificial spring water conditioned by aqueous excretory-secretory products (snail-conditioned water) ofB. glabrata elicited significant intraspecific chemoattraction. However, lipophilic excretory-secretory products ofB. glabrata elicited significant chemorepulsion. Repellant factors in the lipophilic fraction were not characterized.  相似文献

A two-choice, wind-tunnel olfactometer was designed and contructed to determine whether second-instar eastern spruce budworm larvae,Christoneura fumiferana (Clem.), could detect and discriminate among host-plant volatiles. Volatiles of current year's growth ofPicea glauca were preferred over those ofP. rubens, P. mariana, or air.Abies balsamea was preferred overP. mariana or air.P. rubens andP. mariana were both preferred over air. Two-year-old growth ofP. glauca, A. balsamea, P. rubens, andP. mariana were all preferred over air. Current year's growth of these host evergreen species was usually preferred over former year's growth of the same species in each case.  相似文献

The aqueous eluate from fruits ofAmmi majus (Bishop's weed, Umbelliferae) remarkably inhibited germination of adjacent seeds ofAnastatica hierochuntica, lettuce, or tomato but had no effect on intact fruits ofAmmi. Similar inhibition was found in dark or in light, except that seeds ofA. hierochuntica were significantly more inhibited in the dark than in the light. Xanthotoxin was isolated, identified, and found to account for about a sixth of the inhibitory activity of the eluate. After fruits ofAmmi were submerged in a large volume of water for 4 days, the fruits still exuded enough inhibitors to prevent germination ofA. hierochuntica, lettuce, or tomato. Data support also the proposal that the phytotoxins are compartmentalized between the inner and the outer fruit envelopes. The inner layer excludes inhibitors from the embryo and autotoxicity is thus avoided, whereas the outer one ensures a gradual liberation of the phytotoxic compounds. This, as well as the high reactivity of the eluate, the high densities ofAmmi fruits in nature, and their relatively limited annual germination, suggest chemical inhibition of neighboring plant species other thanAmmi. Hence, in addition to their chemical protection against predators of either lower or higher organisms, furanocoumarins in fruits ofAmmi majus may contribute to its success as a weed.  相似文献

The cardenolide content of the gut, wings, and fat body ofOncopeltus fasciatus was examined. The female fat body contained 4–5% of the total cardenolide content of the insect. The cardenolide content of male fat body, and gut and wings of both sexes was below the detection limit of the cardenolide assay. Thin-layer chromatography was used to determine the cardenolide array of various tissues and secretions ofO. fasciatus reared on seeds of a single species of milkweed (A. Speciosa) and adult extracts and dorsolateral space fluid ofO. fasciatus reared on seeds of two species of milkweed with different cardenolide arrays (A. speciosa andA. syriaca). Our results indicate that cardenolides are not sequestered in the insect simply on the basis of polarity and that metabolism and differential excretion of cardenolides are involved in the sequestration of cardenolides inO. fasciatus. The similarities in the cardenolide profiles ofO. fasciatus reared on different food sources, and tissues ofO. fasciatus reared on a single food source indicates that there is regulation of the cardenolide array inO. The chemical composition of the secretions of the metapleural glands of workers and soldiers of twoAtta species,Atta sexdens rubropilosa andA. cephalotes, and workers ofAcromyrmex octospinosus, has been studied. As indicated by infrared spectrometry and confirmed by the ninhydrin test, the secretions contain chiefly proteins. Of the volatile acidic portion, which is present as ionized salts, phenylacetic acid is the major component in workers and soldiers ofA. s. rubropilosa andA. cephalotes. BothAtta species also contain 3-hydroxydecanoic acid and its homolog as minor components together with indoleacetic acid. While there are qualitative similarities in the acidic composition in the secretions ofA. s. rubropilosa andA. cephalotes, they differ quantitatively. The secretion ofAcromyrmex octospinosus contains 3-hydroxydecanoic and indoleacetic acids, but lacks phenylacetic acid. The bactericidal and fungicidal actions of the three major substances have been confirmed.  相似文献

Sequestration of dietary pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA) by larvae and adults of six European arctiid moth species (Spilosoma lubricipeda, Arctia caja, Phragmatobia fuliginosa, Callimorpha dominula, Diacrisia sannio, andTyria jacobaeae) was investigated for comparison with the well-studied Asian arctiidCreatonotos transiens. Larvae of all species metabolized free PA bases into the respectiveN-oxides. Only adults ofA. caja, P. fuliginosa, andS. lubricipeda, but not their larvae, converted dietary 7(S)-heliotrine to 7(R)-heliotrine, a direct precursor of a male pheromone in some arctiids, 7(R)-hydroxydanaidal. The larval integument figures as the main storage site for resorbed alkaloids; only minor amounts were found in other tissues. In addition, a significant amount of alkaloid is deposited in the cocoon ofArctia caja; only traces of alkaloids could be found in the meconium and the exuviae of this species. A substantial part of the alkaloids fed was degraded to unknown, nonalkaloidal products.  相似文献

The development of toxicity produced by vegetable litter of four forest species (Quercus robur L.,Pinus radiata D.Don.,Eucalyptus globulus Labill, andAcacia melanoxylon R.Br.) was studied during the decomposition process in each of the soils where the species were found. The toxicity of the extracts was measured by the effects produced on germination and growth ofLactuca saliva L. var. Great Lakes seeds. The phenolic composition of the leaves of the four species was also studied using high-performance liquid chromatographic analysis (HPLC). It was verified that toxicity was clearly reflected in the first stages of leaf decomposition inE. globulus andA. melanoxylon, due to phytotoxic compounds liberated by their litter. At the end of half a year of decomposition, inhibition due to the vegetable material was not observed, but the soils associated with these two species appeared to be responsible for the toxic effects. On the other hand, the phenolic profiles are quite different among the four species, and greater complexity in the two toxic species (E. globulus andA. melanoxylon) was observed.  相似文献

The active component of the sex pheromone ofMatsucoccus josephi is (2E,6E,8E)-5,7-dimethyl-2,6,8-decatrien-4-one; the chemical is also a powerful kairomone of adult males and females of the bugElatophilus hebraicus the principal predator ofM. josephi. The presence of theZ isomer (2E,6Z,8E)-5,7-dimethyl-2,6,8-decatrien-4-one does not interfere with the attractancy of the activeE component forM. josephi males or the bug. Our results show a clear dose-response between trap catch ofM. josephi males andE. hebraicus. Conversely, increasing amounts of theZ isomer in the mixture did not affect the attraction of the scale insect males or the bug. The catch ofM. josephi males did not differ significantly among traps of different color, and was significantly higher with traps attached to the tree trunk than those suspended between trees. Comparison of the catch ofM. josephi among the three forests and between pine species suggests that the level of infestation ofPinus halepepsis andPinus brutia ssp.brutia is similar, despite the fact that the latter pine is resistant to the scale insect. Both sexes ofE. hebraicus were trapped in much lower numbers at the more infested sites. This may be related to interference with the activity ofE. hebraicus due to deterioration and drying of parts of the tree crowns and heavy colonization by generalist predators in injured trees.  相似文献

Species ofPsithyrus (Hymenoptera; Apidae) are obligate bumble bee social parasites. In this study, females ofP. vestalis andP. ashtoni were presented with pentane extracts prepared from different body parts of queens of their respective host species,Bombus terrestris andB. terricola. Parasites of both species were capable of distinguishing host bees from other bumble bee species using chemical cues contained within extracts. Among extracts of several body parts presented to parasites, the abdomen produced the greatest behavioral response, with Dufour's gland and terminal tergal segments eliciting the greatest response among abdominal regions. Extracts of these two body parts obtained fromB. terrestris queens shared a number of compounds, identified by GC-MS. Among the identified compounds are a number that have been reported to be of importance in bee sociochemistry.  相似文献

The nitrification inhibitor dicyandiamide [DCD] did not inhibit growth and respiration of N-fixing bacteria (Rhizobium leguminosarum andAzotobacter chroococcum) in cell suspensions with concentrations of 400 ppm DCD. Growth ofRhizobium leguminosarum was inhibited by 17% with 100 ppm nitrapyrin (N-Serve), but respiration was not affected. Growth ofAzotobacter chroococcum was inhibited by 10 ppm (10%) and 100 ppm nitrapyrin (50%); in the latter case, respiration was also impaired (36%). Thiourea only caused a minor growth inhibition ofAzotobacter chroococcum with 100 ppm (8%) and had no effect onRhizobium leguminosarum.  相似文献

Petrol and ethanolic extracts of six asteraceous weeds were added to artificial diets to screen for growth inhibition and mortality of the variegated cutworm,Peridroma saucia (Hbn). Petrol and ethanolic extracts ofArtemisia tridentata andChamomilla suaveolens and ethanolic extracts ofChrysothamnus nauseosus andCentaurea diffusa severely inhibited larval growth at five times the natural concentrations. The twoC. suaveolens extracts and the ethanol extract ofA. tridentata were active at the natural concentration (100%) and were further examined at 20, 40, 60, and 80% of this level. Inhibition of larval growth was directly related to concentration for each of the three extracts tested. EC50s (effective concentration to inhibit growth by 50% relative to controls) for the three extracts were 36–42% of the naturally occurring level in the plants. Nutritional indices were calculated for secondinstarP. saucia feeding on the activeA. tridentata EtOH extract and the petrol extract fromC. suaveolens. Addition of the activeA. tridentata EtOH or theC. suaveolens petrol extract to the diet resulted in significant reduction in the relative growth rate of larvae, although theA. tridentata extract was much more inhibitory. Dietary utilization was significantly lower for larvae fed theA. tridentata EtOH extract.  相似文献

Iridoid glycosides were found to be sequestered by natural populations ofEuphydryas anicia after ingestion from the host plantsBesseya alpina, B. plantaginea, andCastilleja integra. Both major iridoids ofB. alpina, cataipol and aucubin, were found in butterfly populations where this was the only host plant. The catalpol-aucubin ratio was higher in the butterflies than in the host plant. AnE. anicia population which uses bothB. plantaginea andC. integra as host plants was found to sequester cataipol as well as another iridoid, macfadienoside. Macfadienoside was the major iridoid ofC. integra, while catalpol esters were the major iridoids ofB. plantaginea. Although it was a major sequestered iridoid, catalpol was a minor constituent in both host plants. The macfadienoside-catalpol ratio in the butterflies from this population was highly variable, and there appeared to be both sex and individual variation in host plant and/or iridoid glucoside utilization byE. anicia. Nimbin and salannin, major triterpenoids accompanying azadirachtin in extracts of neem (Azadirachta indica) seeds, were photooxidized by UV light in the presence of oxygen to more polar, unstable intermediates that rearranged on silica gel to two final products in which the furan ring had been oxidized to isomeric hydroxybutenolides. The isomeric hydroxybutenolides were also readily formed when a crude extract of triterpenoids from neem seeds was irradiated, and both isomers of salannin have been isolated from seeds. Photooxidation of nimbin and salannin proceeded much faster than that of azadirachtin. All photoproducts showed some biological activity againstSpodoptera littoralis, Locusta migratoria, andSchistocerca gregaria. Isonimbinolide was as potent as azadirachtin at inhibiting feeding in all three species, and it also inhibited the growth ofS. littoralis. Isosalanninolide showed potent antifeedant and growth inhibitory activity againstS. littoralis.  相似文献

The effect of tomatine on larval growth ofHeliothis zea andSpodoptera exigua was assessed by rearing larvae on diets with different concentrations of the chemical added. When reared from neonates, linear dose-response relationships were obtained for both species, withS. exigua being three times more sensitive to tomatine thanH. zea. Tomatine toxicity was completely alleviated inH. zea by the addition of equimolar cholesterol into the diet; however, inS. exigua some toxicity was maintained. Larvae ofS. exigua that were started on control diet were insensitive to tomatine after five days; larvae started on diet with an EC50 of tomatine and then switched to control diet after five days failed to recover from toxicosis. Larval growth ofH. zea, on the other hand, was affected both at the neonate and third-instar stage, but normal growth resumed when the larvae were transferred to control diet. Tomatine had little or no affect on food consumption, assimilation, or dietary utilization of the food by third-instar larvae ofS. exigua, except at a concentration 10 times the EC50. In contrast, the efficiency of food utilization ofH. zea larvae decreased with increasing tomatine concentrations. Assimilation of the food tended to increase, although not significantly, as tomatine levels increased. Food consumption ofH. zea larvae also increased when the tomatine concentration was greater than an EC50. The addition of equimolar cholesterol to diets with an EC50 of tomatine restored weight gain and nutritional indices values to control values. These results are related to the utility of using tomatine in host-plant resistance programs.  相似文献

Several unsaturated aldehydes are produced from polyunsaturated fatty acids via the lipoxygenase pathway when soybean (Glycine max) plants are wounded mechanically or by pathogens. The effects of four of these aldehydes were examined on the growth of isolated fungal cultures ofColletotrichum truncatum, Rhizoctonia solani, andSclerotium rolfsii. (E)-2-Hexenal, (E)-2-nonenal, and (Z)-3-nonenal inhibited the growth ofR. solani andS. rolfsii at 35 mol added per liter or greater when applied as volatiles, although higher levels were required for inhibition ofC. truncatum. (E)-4-Hydroxy-2-nonenal was the most inhibitory compound when applied directly in the growth medium, but it had the least effect as a volatile.Mention of firms or products does not imply endorsement by the U.S. Department of Agriculture over other firms or products not mentioned.  相似文献
