Nanofluid is a new class of heat transfer fluids engineered by dispersing metallic or non-metallic nanoparticles with a typical size of less than 100 nm in the conventional heat transfer fluids. Their use remarkably augments the heat transfer potential of the base liquids. This article presents the heat transfer coefficient and friction factor of the TiO2-water nanofluids flowing in a horizontal double tube counter-flow heat exchanger under turbulent flow conditions, experimentally. TiO2 nanoparticles with diameters of 21 nm dispersed in water with volume concentrations of 0.2–2 vol.% are used as the test fluid. The results show that the heat transfer coefficient of nanofluid is higher than that of the base liquid and increased with increasing the Reynolds number and particle concentrations. The heat transfer coefficient of nanofluids was approximately 26% greater than that of pure vol.%, and the results also show that the heat transfer coefficient of the nanofluids at a volume concentration of 2.0 vol.% was approximately 14% lower than that of base fluids for given conditions. For the pressure drop, the results show that the pressure drop of nanofluids was slightly higher than the base fluid and increases with increasing the volume concentrations. Finally, the new correlations were proposed for predicting the Nusselt number and friction factor of the nanofluids, especially.  相似文献

The hybrid nanofluid has been thriving among researchers due to its potential to improve heat transfer performance. Therefore, various studies on heat transfer properties need to be carried out to provide a better understanding on hybrid nanofluid performance. In this paper, the experimental work is focused on the thermal conductivity and dynamic viscosity of TiO2-SiO2 nanofluids in a mixture of water and ethylene glycol (EG) with volume ratio of 60:40. The stable suspension of TiO2-SiO2 prepared at volume concentrations of 0.5 to 3.0%. The measurements of thermal conductivity and dynamic viscosity were performed at a temperature range of 30 to 80 °C by using KD2 Pro Thermal Properties Analyser and Brookfield LVDV III Ultra Rheometer, respectively. The thermal conductivity of TiO2-SiO2 nanofluids was improved by increasing the volume concentration and temperature with 22.8% maximum enhancement. Besides, the viscosity of TiO2-SiO2 nanofluids showed evidence of being influenced by nanofluid concentration and temperature. Additionally, the TiO2-SiO2 nanofluids behaved as a Newtonian fluid for volume concentration up to 3.0%. The properties enhancement ratio suggested that TiO2-SiO2 nanofluids will aid in heat transfer for concentrations of more than 1.5% and within the range of the temperature studied. A new correlation for thermal conductivity and dynamic viscosity of TiO2-SiO2 nanofluids were developed and found to be precise.  相似文献

Nanofluids are a new class of engineered heat transfer fluids which exhibit superior thermophysical properties and have potential applications in numerous important fields. In this study, nanofluids have been prepared by dispersing SiO2 nanoparticles in different base fluids such as 20:80% and 30:70% by volume of BioGlycol (BG)/water (W) mixtures. Thermal conductivity and viscosity experiments have been conducted in temperatures between 30 °C and 80 °C and in volume concentrations between 0.5% and 2.0%. Results show that thermal conductivity of nanofluids increases with increase of volume concentrations and temperatures. Similarly, viscosity of nanofluid increases with increase of volume concentrations but decreases with increase of temperatures. The maximum thermal conductivity enhancement among all the nanofluids was observed for 20:80% BG/W nanofluid about 7.2% in the volume concentration of 2.0% at a temperature of 70 °C. Correspondingly among all the nanofluids maximum viscosity enhancement was observed for 30:70% BG/W nanofluid about 1.38-times in the volume concentration of 2.0% at a temperature of 70 °C. The classical models and semi-empirical correlations failed to predict the thermal conductivity and viscosity of nanofluids with effect of volume concentration and temperatures. Therefore, nonlinear correlations have been proposed with 3% maximum deviation for the estimation of thermal conductivity and viscosity of nanofluids.  相似文献

We have experimentally investigated the behaviour and heat transfer enhancement of a particular nanofluid, Al2O3 nanoparticle–water mixture, flowing inside a closed system that is destined for cooling of microprocessors or other electronic components. Experimental data, obtained for turbulent flow regime, have clearly shown that the inclusion of nanoparticles into distilled water has produced a considerable enhancement of the cooling block convective heat transfer coefficient. For a particular nanofluid with 6.8% particle volume concentration, heat transfer coefficient has been found to increase as much as 40% compared to that of the base fluid. It has also been found that an increase of particle concentration has produced a clear decrease of the heated component temperature. Experimental data have clearly shown that nanofluid with 36 nm particle diameter provides higher heat transfer coefficients than the ones of nanofluid with 47 nm particle size.  相似文献

In this paper, a numerical investigation on heat transfer performance and flow fields of different nanofluids flows through elliptic annulus in a laminar and turbulent flow regimes. The three-dimensional continuity, Navier–Stokes and energy equations are solved by using finite volume method (FVM) and the SIMPLE algorithm scheme is applied to examine the effects of laminar and turbulent flow on heat transfer characteristics. This study evaluates the effects of four different types of nanoparticles, Al2O3, CuO, SiO2 and ZnO, with different volume fractions (0.5–4%) and diameters (25–80 nm) under constant heat flux boundary condition using water as a base fluid were used. The Reynolds number of laminar flow was in the range of 200  Re  1500, while for turbulent flow it was in the range of 4000  Re  10,000. The results have shown that SiO2–water nanofluid has the highest Nusselt number, followed by ZnO–water, CuO–water, Al2O3–water, and lastly pure water. The Nusselt number for all cases increases with the volume fraction but it decreases with the rise in the diameter of nanoparticles. In all configurations, the Nusselt number increases with Reynolds number. It is found that the glycerine–SiO2 shows the best heat transfer enhancement compared with other tested base fluids.  相似文献

In the present investigation nanofluids containing CuO and Al2O3 oxide nanoparticles in water as base fluid in different concentrations produced and the laminar flow convective heat transfer through circular tube with constant wall temperature boundary condition were examined. The experimental results emphasize that the single phase correlation with nanofluids properties (Homogeneous Model) is not able to predict heat transfer coefficient enhancement of nanofluids. The comparison between experimental results obtained for CuO / water and Al2O3 / water nanofluids indicates that heat transfer coefficient ratios for nanofluid to homogeneous model in low concentration are close to each other but by increasing the volume fraction, higher heat transfer enhancement for Al2O3 / water can be observed.  相似文献

Nanofluids are advanced fluids with novel properties useful for diverse applications in heat transfer. This article reports the experimental determination of thermal conductivity and viscosity for silica (SiO2) nanofluids in ethylene glycol (EG) and glycerol (G) as base fluids. A two-step method was applied to disperse the nanoparticles in the base fluids for the particle volume concentration of 0.5–2.0%. The dispersion stability of the nanofluids was evaluated by zeta potential analysis. All the measurements were performed in the temperature interval from 30 °C to 80 °C. It was found that the thermal conductivity increases with temperature. The SiO2-EG showed higher conductivity enhancement than SiO2-G nanofluids. Rheological analyses confirm Newtonian behavior for silica nanofluids within shear rate range of 20–100 s 1. Viscosity decreases with an increase in operating temperature. The SiO2-EG demonstrated very weak temperature dependence compared to the SiO2-G nanofluids. Based on these measured properties, the criterion for heat transfer performance was determined. Furthermore, equations have been proposed with accuracy within ± 10% deviations to predict the thermal conductivity and dynamic viscosity of EG and G-based SiO2 nanofluids.  相似文献

In the present work a three-dimensional analysis is used to study the heat transfer characteristics of a double-tube helical heat exchangers using nanofluids under laminar flow conditions. CuO and TiO2 nanoparticles with diameters of 24 nm dispersed in water with volume concentrations of 0.5–3 vol.% are used as the working fluid. The mass flow rate of the nanofluid from the inner tube was kept and the mass flow rate of the water from the annulus was set at either half, full, or double the value. The variations of the nanofluids and water temperatures, heat transfer rates and heat transfer coefficients along inner and outer tubes are shown in the paper. Effects of nanoparticles concentration level and of the Dean number on the heat transfer rates and heat transfer coefficients are presented. The results show that for 2% CuO nanoparticles in water and same mass flow rate in inner tube and annulus, the heat transfer rate of the nanofluid was approximately 14% greater than of pure water and the heat transfer rate of water from annulus than through the inner tube flowing nanofluids was approximately 19% greater than for the case which through the inner and outer tubes flow water. The results also show that the convective heat transfer coefficients of the nanofluids and water increased with increasing of the mass flow rate and with the Dean number. The results have been validated by comparison of simulations with the data computed by empirical equations.  相似文献

Stable aqueous TiO2 nanofluids with different particle (agglomerate) sizes and concentrations are formulated and measured for their static thermal conductivity and rheological behaviour. The nanofluids are then measured for their heat transfer and flow behaviour upon flowing upward through a vertical pipe in both the laminar and turbulent flow regimes. Addition of nanoparticles into the base liquid enhances the thermal conduction and the enhancement increases with increasing particle concentration and decreasing particle (agglomerate) size. Rheological measurements show that the shear viscosity of nanofluids decreases first with increasing shear rate (the shear thinning behaviour), and then approaches a constant at a shear rate greater than ∼100 s−1. The constant viscosity increases with increasing particle (agglomerate) size and particle concentration. Given the flow Reynolds number and particle size, the convective heat transfer coefficient increases with nanoparticle concentration in both the laminar and turbulent flow regimes and the effect of particle concentration seems to be more considerable in the turbulent flow regime. Given the particle concentration and flow Reynolds number, the convective heat transfer coefficient does not seem to be sensitive to the average particle size under the conditions of this work. The results also show that the pressure drop of the nanofluid flows is very close to that of the base liquid flows for a given Reynolds number.  相似文献

This article reports an experimental study on the forced convective heat transfer and flow characteristics of a nanofluid consisting of water and 0.2 vol.% TiO2 nanoparticles. The heat transfer coefficient and friction factor of the TiO2–water nanofluid flowing in a horizontal double-tube counter flow heat exchanger under turbulent flow conditions are investigated. The Degussa P25 TiO2 nanoparticles of about 21 nm diameter are used in the present study. The results show that the convective heat transfer coefficient of nanofluid is slightly higher than that of the base liquid by about 6–11%. The heat transfer coefficient of the nanofluid increases with an increase in the mass flow rate of the hot water and nanofluid, and increases with a decrease in the nanofluid temperature, and the temperature of the heating fluid has no significant effect on the heat transfer coefficient of the nanofluid. It is also seen that the Gnielinski equation failed to predict the heat transfer coefficient of the nanofluid. Finally, the use of the nanofluid has a little penalty in pressure drop.  相似文献

The turbulent convective heat transfer and friction factor behavior of Al2O3 nanofluid in a circular tube with different aspect ratios of longitudinal strip inserts are studied experimentally. Experiments are conducted with water and nanofluid in the range of 3000 < Re < 22,000, particle volume concentration 0 < φ < 0.5% and longitudinal strip aspect ratios of 0 < AR < 18. The agreement between the values of Nusselt number obtained with water is satisfactory when compared with the data of Heish and Huang. Results indicate that heat transfer coefficients increase with nanofluid volume concentration and decrease with aspect ratio.  相似文献

Homogeneous stable suspensions acquired by dispersing dry Al2O3 and TiO2 nanoparticles in controlled pH solution and distilled water, respectively, were prepared and investigated in this study. First of all, the mean nanoparticle diameters were studied by dynamic light scattering (DLS) technique, and the nanofluid stability was analyzed by zeta potential measurements. The nano-crystalline structures were characterized by scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope. The rheological behavior was determined for both nanofluids at nanoparticle volume concentrations up to 0.3%. The effect of temperature for the heating and cooling phases was analyzed from 25 °C to 80 °C. Furthermore, the influence of temperature, pressure drop, pumping power, zeta potential, size and densities were analyzed for fresh prepared samples as well as for samples used in a flat plate solar collector over a period of 30 days. The thermal conductivity enhancement of the two nanofluids demonstrated a nonlinear relationship with respect to temperature and volume fraction, with increases in the volume fraction and temperature. All resulted in an increase in the measured enhancement. Existence of a critical temperature was observed beyond which the particle suspension properties altered drastically, which in turn triggered a hysteresis phenomenon. The hysteresis phenomenon on viscosity measurement, which is believed to be the first observed for Al2O3/water and TiO2/water-based nanofluids, has raised serious concerns about the use of nanofluids for heat transfer enhancement. The pressure drop and pumping power of the nanofluid flows are found to be very close to those of the base liquid for low volume concentration. It may be concluded that nanofluids can be utilized as a working medium with a negligible effect of enhanced viscosity and/or density. Our findings provide a view on the thermo physical properties of nanofluids that is compared with that in the literature, and new findings (such as viscosity, hysteresis phenomenon and pumping power) have been presented, which are not available in literature as yet.  相似文献

TiO2 nanoparticle-coated nickel wires were produced by electrical heating in various nanofluid concentrations ranging from 0.01 to 1 wt.% with various processing heat fluxes from 0 to 1000 kW/m2. The experimental results demonstrated up to 82.7% enhancement on critical heat flux (CHF) in condition of coated nickel wire (processed in 1 wt.% with 1000 kW/m2) boiling in pure water. The contact angle measurement revealed that the hydrophilic porous coating formed by vigorous vaporization of TiO2 nanofluid in nucleate boiling regime enormously modified the wettability of heating surface consequently improving the CHF. Besides, it is evident that the coverage of nanoparticle deposition tended to become more complete as concentration and processing heat flux increased based on SEM and EDS analysis. The nanoparticles dispersed in base fluid exhibited little effect on CHF enhancement and could even hinder the percentage of CHF augmentation from boosting, which demonstrated that one could enhance CHF by using only small amount of nanoparticles just adequate to form surface coatings instead of preparing working fluid with great bulk. However, according to the boiling curves in all cases of coated nickel wires, it is supposed that the nucleate boiling heat transfer coefficient deteriorates as a result of thermal resistance resulted from the occurrence of nanoparticle deposition. In summary, the coated porous structure of nanoparticles leads to enhance CHF and to decrease boiling heat transfer coefficient.  相似文献

This paper is mainly concerned about the pool boiling heat transfer behavior of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) suspension in pure water and water containing 9.0% by weight of sodium lauryl sulphate anionic surfactant (SDS). Three different concentrations of 0.25%, 0.5% and 1.0% by volume of CNT dispersed with water and water containing 9.0% by weight of sodium lauryl sulphate anionic surfactant (SDS) were prepared and boiling experiments were conducted over a stainless steel flat plate heater of size 30 mm2 and 0.44 mm thickness. The test results exhibit that the addition of carbon nanotubes increases boiling heat transfer coefficients of the base fluids. At a given heat flux of 500 kW/m2, the enhancement of heat transfer coefficient was found to be 1.5, 2.6 and 3.0 times of water corresponding to 0.25%, 0.5% and 1.0% concentration of CNT by volume in water, respectively. In water–CNT–surfactant nanofluid, it was found that 0.5% of CNT concentration gives the highest enhancement of 1.7 compared with water. In both water and water–surfactant base fluids, it was observed that the enhancement factor for 0.25% of CNT first increases up to the heat flux of 66 kW/m2 and then decreases for higher heat fluxes. Further, the overall heat transfer coefficient enhancement in the water–CNT nanofluids is approximately two times higher than that in the water–CNT–surfactant nanofluids. With increasing heat flux, however, the enhancement was concealed due to vigorous bubble generation for both water–CNT and water–CNT–surfactant nanofluids. Foaming was also observed over the liquid-free surface in water–CNT–surfactant nanofluids during the investigation. No fouling over the test-section surface was observed after experimentation.  相似文献

Laminar convective heat transfer and viscous pressure loss were investigated for alumina–water and zirconia–water nanofluids in a flow loop with a vertical heated tube. The heat transfer coefficients in the entrance region and in the fully developed region are found to increase by 17% and 27%, respectively, for alumina–water nanofluid at 6 vol % with respect to pure water. The zirconia–water nanofluid heat transfer coefficient increases by approximately 2% in the entrance region and 3% in the fully developed region at 1.32 vol %. The measured pressure loss for the nanofluids is in general much higher than for pure water. However, both the measured nanofluid heat transfer coefficient and pressure loss are in good agreement with the traditional model predictions for laminar flow, provided that the loading- and temperature-dependent thermophysical properties of the nanofluids are utilized in the evaluation of the dimensionless numbers. In other words, no abnormal heat transfer enhancement or pressure loss was observed within measurement errors.  相似文献

Heat transfer characteristics of γ-Al2O3/water and TiO2/water nanofluids were measured in a shell and tube heat exchanger under turbulent flow condition. The effects of Peclet number, volume concentration of suspended nanoparticles, and particle type on the heat characteristics were investigated. Based on the results, adding of naoparticles to the base fluid causes the significant enhancement of heat transfer characteristics. For both nanofluids, two different optimum nanoparticle concentrations exist. Comparison of the heat transfer behavior of two nanofluids indicates that at a certain Peclet number, heat transfer characteristics of TiO2/water nanofluid at its optimum nanoparticle concentration are greater than those of γ-Al2O3/water nanofluid while γ-Al2O3/water nanofluid possesses better heat transfer behavior at higher nanoparticle concentrations.  相似文献

A numerical investigation is performed to study the effects of different rib shapes and turbulent nanofluid flow on the thermal and flow fields through transversely roughened rectangular channels with Reynolds number ranging from 5000 to 20000 and uniform heat flux of 10 kW/m2. Considering single-phase approach, the two-dimensional continuity, Navier–Stokes, and energy equations were solved by using the finite volume method (FVM). The optimization was carried out by using various rib shapes (rectangular shape, triangular shape, wedge pointing upstream, and wedge pointing downstream) in two arrangements (in-line and staggered) and three different aspect ratios (w/e = 0.5, 2, and 4) to reach the optimal geometry with maximum performance evaluation criterion (PEC). The main aim of this study is to analyze the effects of nanoparticle types (Al2O3, CuO, SiO2, and ZnO), concentration (1–4%), and nanoparticle diameter (30–80 nm), on the heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics. Simulation results show that the ribbed channels' performance was greatly influenced by rib shapes and their geometrical parameters. The highest PEC was obtained for the in-line triangular ribs with w/e = 4 at Re = 5000. It is found that the water–SiO2 shows the highest heat transfer enhancement compared with other tested nanofluids. The Nusselt number through the ribbed channels was enhanced with the increase of the particle volume fraction and Reynolds number, and with the decrease of nanoparticle diameter.  相似文献

Improving heat exchanger's performance by increasing the overall heat transfer as well as minimising pressure drop is one of the promising fields of research to focus on. Nanofluids with higher thermal conductivity and better thermophysical properties can be applied in heat exchanger to increase the heat transfer rate. In the present study SiO2, TiO2 and Al2O3 are applied in a plate heat exchanger and the effects on thermophysical properties and heat transfer characteristics are compared with the base fluid. Since it is desired to minimize the pressure drop, the influence of nanofluid application on pressure drop and entropy generation is investigated. It is concluded that the thermal conductivity, heat transfer coefficient and heat transfer rate of the fluid increase by adding the nanoparticles and TiO2 and Al2O3 result in higher thermophysical properties in comparison with SiO2. The highest overall heat transfer coefficient was achieved by Al2O3 nanofluid, which was 308.69 W/m2.K in 0.2% nanoparticle concentration. The related heat transfer rate was improved around 30% compared to SiO2 nanofluid. In terms of pressure drop, SiO2 shows the lowest pressure drop, and it was around 50% smaller than the pressure drop in case of using TiO2 and Al2O3.  相似文献

Convective heat transfer and friction factor characteristics of water/propylene glycol (70:30% by volume) based CuO nanofluids flowing in a plain tube are investigated experimentally under constant heat flux boundary condition. Glycols are normally used as an anti-freezing heat transfer fluids in cold climatic regions. Nanofluids are prepared by dispersing 50 nm diameter of CuO nanoparticles in the base fluid. Experiments are conducted using CuO nanofluids with 0.025%, 0.1% and 0.5% volume concentration in the Reynolds numbers ranging from 1000 < Re < 10000 and considerable heat transfer enhancement in CuO nanofluids is observed. The effect of twisted tape inserts with twist ratios in the range of 0 < H/D < 15 on nanofluids is studied and further heat transfer augmentation is noticed. The increment in the pressure drop in the CuO nanofluids over the base fluid is negligible but the experimental results have shown a significant increment in the convective heat transfer coefficient of CuO nanofluids. The convective heat transfer coefficient increased up to 27.95% in the 0.5% CuO nanofluid in plain tube and with a twisted tape insert of H/D = 5 it is further increased to 76.06% over the base fluid at a particular Reynolds number. The friction factor enhancement of 10.08% is noticed and increased to 26.57% with the same twisted tape, when compared with the base fluid friction factor at the same Reynolds number. Based on the experimental data obtained, generalized regression equations are developed to predict Nusselt number and friction factor.  相似文献

We study the pool boiling heat transfer on the microheater surface with and without nanoparticles by pulse heating. Nanofluids are the mixture of de-ionized water and Al2O3 particles with 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.5% and 1.0% weight concentrations. The microheater is a platinum surface by 50 × 20 μm. Three types of bubble dynamics were identified. The first type of bubble dynamics is for the boiling in pure water, referring to a sharp microheater temperature increase once a new pulse cycle begins, followed by a continuous temperature increase during the pulse duration stage. Large bubble is observed on the microheater surface and it does not disappear during the pulse off stage. The second type of bubble dynamics is for the nanofluids with 0.1% and 0.2% weight concentrations. The microheater surface temperature has a sharp increase at the start of a new pulse cycle, followed by a slight decrease during the pulse duration stage. Miniature bubble has oscillation movement along the microheater length direction, and it disappears during the pulse off stage. The third type of bubble dynamics occurs at the nanofluid weight concentration of 0.5% and 1.0%. The bubble behavior is similar to that in pure water, but the microheater temperatures are much lower than that in pure water. A structural disjoining pressure causes the smaller contact area between the dry vapor and the heater surface, decreasing the surface tension effect and resulting in the easy departure of miniature bubbles for the 0.1% and 0.2% nanofluid weight concentrations. For the 0.5% weight concentration of nanofluids, coalescence of nanoparticles to form larger particles is responsible for the large bubble formation on the heater surface. The microlayer evaporation heat transfer and the heat transfer mechanisms during the bubble departure process account for the higher heat transfer coefficients for the 0.1% and 0.2% nanofluid weight concentrations. The shortened dry area between the bubble and the heater surface, and the additional thin nanofluid liquid film evaporation heat transfer, account for the higher heat transfer coefficient for the 0.5% nanofluid weight concentration, compared with the pure water runs.  相似文献
