In order to understand the first steps of the Cu(1 0 0) oxidation we performed first principles calculations for on-surface and sub-surface oxygen on this surface. According to our calculations, the adsorption energies for all on-surface site oxygen atoms increase, whereas the energies of the sub-surface atoms decrease with the increasing oxygen coverage. At coverage 1 ML and higher on the reconstructed surface, structures including both on- and sub-surface atoms are energetically more favourable than structures consisting only of on-surface adsorbates. On the ideal (1 0 0) surface this change can be perceived at coverage 0.75 ML.  相似文献

Atomic oxygen embedment into a Cu(1 0 0) surface is studied by density functional theory calculation and the nudged elastic band method. As the oxygen coverage increases on the unreconstructed surface from 0.25 monolayer (ML) to 0.75 ML, the energy barrier for oxygen embedment decreases and an energetically favorable sub-surface site is found at 0.75 ML coverage. At a fixed oxygen coverage of 0.5 ML, the oxygen embedment energetics vary with the surface morphology and the embedment is found to be more probable for reconstructed structures compared to the bare surface. On the missing-row reconstructed surface, we find that the energy barrier for atomic oxygen embedment is smaller through the missing-row compared to other paths, suggesting a mechanism for the formation of sub-surface oxygen structures that are consistent with a recent experiment. The energy barrier for sub-surface oxygen diffusion is predicted to be less than that for on-surface diffusion.  相似文献

The surface structures of atomic hydrogen adsorbed on Cu(1 1 1) surface have been studied theoretically by using density-functional-theory calculations. The results show that 0.67 ML hydrogen adsorbed on threefold hollow sites forming (3 × 1) superstructure and 0.5 ML hydrogen adsorbed on threefold hollow sites forming (2 × 2)-2H superstructure with central H at trigonal sites induce most significant substrate reconstructions and that fits best the observed (3 × 3) and (2 × 2) LEED patterns, respectively. The potential energies for the hydrogen in these two models are also lower than those in other competing models. Accordingly, these two models are the most preferable structures for 0.5-0.67 ML and 0.3-0.5 ML hydrogen adsorbed on the Cu(1 1 1) surface. In addition, the calculations also suggest that the lateral H-H interaction is not of simple repulsion and how the adsorbed hydrogen is arrayed is important in modifying the adsorption energy.  相似文献

Room temperature deposition of Sn on Cu(1 0 0) gives rise to a rich variety of surface reconstructions in the submonolayer coverage range. In this work, we report a detailed investigation on the phases appearing and their temperature stability range by using low-energy electron diffraction and surface X-ray diffraction. Previously reported reconstructions in the submonolayer range are p(2 × 2) (for 0.2 ML), p(2 × 6) (for 0.33 ML), ()R45° (for 0.5 ML), and c(4 × 4) (for 0.65 ML). We find a new phase with a structure for a coverage of 0.45 ML. Furthermore, we analyze the temperature stability of all phases. We find that two phases exhibit a temperature induced reversible phase transition: the ()R45° phase becomes ()R45° phase above 360 K, and the new phase becomes p(2 × 2) also above 360 K. The origin of these two-phase transitions is discussed.  相似文献

The adsorption of glycine on Au(1 1 1) pre-deposited with different amounts of Cu was investigated with both conventional X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and synchrotron-based photoemission. In the Cu submonolayer range, glycine physically adsorbs on the Cu/Au(1 1 1) surfaces in its zwitterionic form and completely desorbs at 350 K. The C 1s, O 1s and N 1s core level binding energies monotonically increase with Cu coverage. This indicates that, in the Cu submonolayer range, the admetal is alloyed with Au rather than forming overlayers on the Au(1 1 1) substrate, consistent with our recent experimental and theoretical results [X. Zhao, P. Liu, J. Hrbek, J.A. Rodriguez, M. Pérez, Surf. Sci. 592 (2005) 25]. Upon increasing the amount of deposited Cu over 1 ML, part of the glycine overlayer transforms from the zwitterionic form to the anionic form (NH2CH2COO) and adsorbs chemically on the Cu/Au(1 1 1) surface with the N 1s binding energy shifted by −2.3 eV. When the amount of deposited Cu is at 3.0 or 6.0 ML, the intensity of the N 1s chemisorption peak increases with aging time at 300 K. It indicates that glycine adsorption induces Cu segregation from the subsurface region onto the top layer of the substrate. Judging from the initial N 1s peak intensities, it is concluded that 64% and 36% of the top layer are still occupied by Au atoms before glycine adsorption even when the amounts of deposited Cu are 3.0 and 6.0 ML, respectively. On the Au(1 1 1) surface pre-dosed with 6.0 ML of Cu, part of the chemisorbed glycine will desorb and part will decompose upon heating to 450-500 K. In addition, about 20% of the glycine exists in the neutral form when the glycine overlayer was dosed on Cu/Au(1 1 1) held at 100 K.  相似文献

Pd-induced surface structures on Si(1 1 3) have been studied by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In the initial process of the Pd adsorption below 0.10 ML, Pd silicide (Pd2Si) clusters are observed to form randomly on the surface. By increasing the Pd coverage to 0.10 ML, the clusters cover the entire surface, and an amorphous layer is formed. After annealing the Si(1 1 3)-Pd surface at 600 °C, various types of islands and chain protrusions appears. The agglomeration, coalescence and crystallization of these islands are observed by using high temperature (HT-) STM. It is also found by XPS that the islands correspond to Pd2Si structure. On the basis of these results, evolution of Pd-induced structures at high temperatures is in detail discussed.  相似文献

The initial stages of iron silicide growth on the Si(1 0 0)2 × 1 surface during solid-phase synthesis were investigated by photoelectron spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation. The experiments were made on iron films of 1-50 monolayer (ML) thickness in the temperature range from room temperature to 750 °С. Our results support the existence of three stages in the Fe deposition on Si(1 0 0) at room temperature, which include formation of the Fe-Si solid solution, Fe3Si silicide and an iron film. The critical Fe dose necessary for the solid solution to be transformed to the silicide is found to be 5 ML. The solid-phase reaction was found to depend on the deposited metal dose. At 5 ML, the reaction begins at 60 °С, and the solid-phase synthesis leads to the formation of only metastable silicides (FeSi with the CsCl-type structure, γ-FeSi2 and α-FeSi2). A specific feature of this process is Si segregation on the silicide films. At a thickness of 15 ML and more, we observed only stable phases, namely, Fe3Si, ε-FeSi and β-FeSi2.  相似文献

The crystalline structure of Co layers deposited on the Cu(0 0 1) surface was investigated with the use of the directional elastic peak electron spectroscopy (DEPES). For clean Cu(0 0 1) the experimental DEPES profiles obtained for different energies of the primary electron beam exhibit intensity maxima corresponding to the close packed rows of atoms. The Auger peak kinetics recorded during continuous Co deposition suggest the layer-by-layer growth mode. The DEPES profiles recorded for 10 monolayers (ML) of Co on Cu(0 0 1) reflect a short-range order in the adsorbate. Intensity maxima observed in the DEPES profiles for Co along [1 0 0], [0 1 0], and [1 1 0] azimuths of Cu(0 0 1) are characteristic of the face centered cubic (fcc) Co(0 0 1) layers. Low-intensity reflections and considerable background intensities were found in the low energy electron diffraction (LEED) patterns recorded from 10 ML of Co, which indicates a weak long-range order in the adsorbate. The adsorption of about 20 ML of Co results in considerable background contribution to DEPES. No reflections but a large background were observed with the use of LEED for this layer. The heating of the Co/Cu(0 0 1) system at T = 770 K leads to an increase of the short- and long-range order in the overlayer, observed in the DEPES profiles and LEED patterns, respectively. The theoretical DEPES profiles were obtained with the use of a multiple scattering approximation. A very good agreement between experimental and theoretical scans was found for the clean and covered copper substrate. The latter proves the epitaxial growth of Co layers on Cu(0 0 1).  相似文献

Reactions and reaction dynamics of gas-phase H(or D) atoms with D(or H) atoms adsorbed onto a Cu(1 1 1) surface have been investigated by the quasi-classical molecular dynamics method. To simulate the H(D) → D(H) + Cu(1 1 1) system at a 94 K surface temperature, D(or H) adsorbates were disseminated arbitrarily on the surface of Cu(1 1 1) to form 0.50, 0.28 and 0.18 ML of coverages. The interaction of hydrogen atoms and the surface system is worked out by an LEPS function. LEPS parameters have been determined by using the total energy values which were calculated by a density functional theory (DFT) method and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) for the exchange-correlation energy for various configurations of one and two hydrogen atoms on the Cu(1 1 1) surface. The Cu(1 1 1) surface, imitated by an embedded-atom method which is a many-body potential parameterized by Voter-Chen, is formed as a multilayer slab. The slab atoms are permitted to move. Various processes, trapping onto the surface, inelastic reflection of the incident projectile and penetration of the adsorbate or projectile atom into the slab, are examined. The dependence of these mechanisms on isotopic replacement has also been analyzed. Considerable contributions of the hot-atom pathways for the product formations are consequently observed. The rate of subsurface penetrations is obtained to be larger than the sticking rate onto the surface.  相似文献

Using scanning tunneling microscopy, phase formation and temperature-driven phase transitions in Tl/Ge(1 0 0) system have been studied. Evolution of Tl overlayer structure has been considered for three temperature ranges, including around room temperature (RT), high-temperature (HT) (350-450 K) and low-temperature (LT) (20-100 K) ranges. Upon RT growth, a 2 × 1-Tl phase develops in submonolayer range and is completed at around 1 ML of Tl. Cooling of the RT-deposited Tl overlayer results in formation of a set of various LT structures. These are 1D chains, 5 × 4-Tl and “stroked” phases observed in submonolayer range and a long-period c(12 × 14)-Tl phase developed at around 1 ML. All transitions between these RT and LT structures are reversible. At doses beyond 1 ML, RT deposition of Tl onto Ge(1 0 0) leads to the growth of second-layer Tl stripes, forming arrays with a 1 × 4 periodicity. Meanwhile, structure of the first layer also changes and it displays a set of various reconstructions, c(2 × 8), c(10 × 6) and c(10 × 7). All these structures remain unchanged upon cooling to LT. Growth at HT as well as heating of RT-deposited Tl overlayer irreversibly produces 3 × 2-Tl phase whose rows become decorated by second-layer Tl stripes at prolonged Tl deposition.  相似文献

We have studied the dislocation structures that occur in films of Ag, Au, and Ag0.5Au0.5 alloy on a Ru(0 0 0 1) substrate. Monolayer (ML) films form herringbone phases while films two or more layers thick contain triangular patterns of dislocations. We use scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) to determine how the film composition affects the structure and periodicity of these ordered structures. One layer of Ag forms two different herringbone phases depending on the exact Ag coverage and temperature. Low-energy electron microscopy (LEEM) establishes that a reversible, first-order phase transition occurs between these two phases at a certain temperature. We critically compare our 1 ML Ag structures to conflicting results from an X-ray scattering study [H. Zajonz et al., Phys. Rev. B 67 (2003) 155417]. Unlike Ag, the herringbone phases of Au and AgAu alloy are independent of the exact film coverage. For two layer films in all three systems, none of the dislocations in the triangular networks thread into the second film layer. In all three systems, the in-plane atomic spacing of the second film layer is nearly the same as in the bulk. Film composition does, however, affect the details of the two layer structures. Ag and Au films form interconnected networks of dislocations, which we refer to as “trigons.” In 2 ML AgAu alloy, the dislocations form a different triangular network that shares features of both trigon and moiré structures. Yet another well-ordered structure, with square symmetry, forms at the boundaries of translational trigon domains in 2 ML Ag films but not in Au films.  相似文献

Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has been used to study the various possible structures of adsorbed Bi on the Cu(1 0 0) surface, after equilibration at a temperature of 520 K. All of the structures previously identified by X-ray diffraction (lattice gas, c(2 × 2), c(9√2 × √2)R45°, and p(10 × 10), in order of increasing Bi-coverage) were found to be present on a single sample produced by diffusing Bi onto the Cu(1 0 0) surface from a 3-d source. By investigating the possible coexistence of various pairs of phases, it was demonstrated that the c(2 × 2) phase transforms to the c(9√2 × √2)R45° phase by a first order transition, whereas the transition from c(9√2 × √2)R45° to p(10 × 10) is continuous. In addition, the structure of surface steps was studied as a function of Bi-coverage. The results showed that the presence of Bi changes the nature of the step-step interactions at the Cu(1 0 0) surface from repulsive to attractive. The attractive step-step interactions transform any small deviations from the nominal (1 0 0) orientation of the Cu substrate into (3 1 0) microfacets. When compared with the known equilibrium crystal shape (ECS) of Bi-saturated Cu, the observed microfaceting may imply that the ECS of Cu-Bi alloys is temperature dependent.  相似文献

Na adsorption at room temperature causes the Na/Si(1 1 1)3 × 1 surface with Na coverage of 1/3 monolayer (ML) to transit into the Na/Si(1 1 1)6 × 1 surface at 1/2 ML and sequentially into the Na/Si(1 1 1)3 × 1 surface at 2/3 ML. The phase transition was studied by Si 2p core-level photoemission spectroscopy. The detailed line shape analysis of the Si 2p core-level spectrum of the Na/Si(1 1 1)3 × 1 surface (2/3 ML) is presented and compared to the Na/Si(1 1 1)3 × 1 surface (1/3 ML) which is composed of Si honeycomb chain-channel structures. This suggests that as additional Na atoms form atomic chains resulting in the Na/Si(1 1 1)3 × 1 surface (2/3 ML), the inner atoms of the Si honeycomb chain-channel structure is buckled due to the additional Na atoms.  相似文献

Experimental studies of nitrogen adsorbed on a Cu(1 1 1) surface show that the surface layer undergoes a reconstruction to form a pseudo-(1 0 0) structure. We use ab initio techniques to demonstrate the theoretical stability of this reconstructed surface phase over a range of conditions. We systematically investigate the chemisorption of N on the Cu(1 1 1) surface, from 0.06 to 1 ML coverage. A peculiar atomic relaxation of N atoms for 0.75 ML is identified, which results in the formation of a (metastable) “N-trimer cluster” on the surface. We have also investigated surface nitride formation, as suggested from experiments. A surface nitride-like structure similar to the reported pseudo-(1 0 0) reconstruction is found to be highly energetically favored. Using concepts from “ab initio atomistic thermodynamics”, we predict that this surface nitride exists for a narrow range of nitrogen chemical potential before the formation of bulk Cu3N.  相似文献

CO adsorption on a sulfur covered cobalt surface at 185 K has been studied using XPS, TDS, LEED, and WF measurements. As in the case of CO adsorption on the clean Co(0 0 0 1) surface, CO adsorbs and desorbs molecularly and no dissociation was observed. The saturation coverage of CO decreases linearly from 0.54 ML to 0.27 ML when the S pre-coverage increases to 0.25 ML. The WF increased during CO adsorption, but did not reach the value obtained for CO adsorption on the clean surface. The smaller work function change is explained by the reduced adsorption of CO on the sulfur-precovered surface. A reduction in the activation energy of desorption for CO from 113 kJ/mol to 88 kJ/mol was observed indicating weaker bonding of the CO molecules to the surface. The behavior of the CO/S/Co(0 0 0 1) system was explained by a combination of steric and electronic effects.  相似文献

We have studied Si(0 0 1)-Ga surface structures formed at Ga coverages of slightly above 0.50 monolayer (ML) at 250 °C by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). 4 × 2-, 5 × 2-, and 6 × 2-Ga structures were observed in a local area on the surface. The 4 × 2-Ga structure consists of three protrusions, as observed in filled- and empty-state STM images. The characters of these structures are clearly different from those of other Si(0 0 1)-Ga structures. We also performed an ab initio calculation of the energetics for several possible models for the 4 × 2-Ga structure, and clarified that the three-orthogonal-Ga-dimer model is the most stable. Also, the results of comparing the simulated STM images and observation images at various bias voltages indicate that this structural model is the most favorable.  相似文献

We have studied initial growth of Sn atoms on Ge(0 0 1) surfaces at room temperature and 80 K by scanning tunneling microscopy. For Sn deposition onto the Ge(0 0 1) substrate at room temperature, the Sn atoms form two kinds of one-dimensional structures composed of ad-dimers with different alignment, in the 〈3 1 0〉 and the 〈1 1 0〉 directions, and epitaxial structures. For Sn deposition onto the substrate at 80 K, the population of the dimer chains aligning in the 〈3 1 0〉 direction increases. The diffusion barrier of the Sn adatom on the substrate kinetically determines the population of the dimer chain. We propose that the diffusion barrier height depends on surface strain induced by the adatom. The two kinds of dimer chains appearing on the Ge(0 0 1) and Si(0 0 1) surfaces with adatoms of the group-IV elements are systematically interpreted in terms of the surface strain.  相似文献

Sulphur-headgroup organic molecules have been chemisorbed on Cu(1 0 0) as self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) in highly-ordered two-fold symmetry structures, and the electronic states induced at the interface have been measured by photoemission: a close similarity of the main interface states for methane-thiolate and mercaptobenzoxazole on Cu(1 0 0) in the same p(2 × 2)-phase is observed. The bonding states for methane-thiolate/Cu(1 0 0) in the p(2 × 2) and c(2 × 2) structures have been compared to ab-initio calculation of the total density of states (DOS) for the S/Cu(1 0 0) system in the same phases. The major role of the S-Cu bonding to determine the density of state evolution at the interface is brought to light. The observed differences in the two phases depend mainly on the charge distribution associated to the different molecular packing, with a minor role of the radical group.  相似文献

We have investigated the temperature dependence of angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy for the lateral quantum well states (QWS) on the striped Cu(1 1 0)(2 × 1)O surface. For the striped surface with oxygen coverage of 0.25 ML, we have successfully observed two discrete levels along a perpendicular direction to the stripes in the surface Brillouin zone, which is generated by quantization of the Shockley surface state. We have found that the relative photoelectron intensity of the two discrete levels depends on the temperature. The photoelectron intensity tends to concentrate on the ground level of the QWS with decreasing temperature. Our investigation indicates that the electron population of each quantum well level depends on the temperature.  相似文献
