Cracks often initiate from the mechanical joints which are widely used in structural components. It has been reported that cracks in mechanical joints are under mixed‐mode condition and there is a critical angle at which mode I stress intensity factor becomes maximum. The crack propagates in an arbitrary direction and the prediction of fatigue crack growth path is needed to provide against crack propagation and examine safety. In this study, mixed‐mode fatigue crack growth tests are performed for horizontal and critical inclined cracks in mechanical joints. Fatigue crack growth paths are predicted using a weight function approach and maximum tangential stress criterion.  相似文献

This paper presents a study of the fatigue failure of an anti-return valve, designed to work in the high pressure system (500 MPa) of a high pressure processing machine. To do this, the crack propagation has been simulated by means of the linear-elastic fracture mechanics approach under mixed-mode loading conditions. From an initial crack, which size is related with the microstructure and superficial finish, the crack growth has been simulated using the stress intensity factors KI and KII of the cracked valve axisymmetric geometry. The crack propagation path has been obtained step by step, applying the criterion of the maximum circumferential stress at the crack tip. The experimental and simulated crack propagation paths have been compared and, as a consequence of the reliable results obtained, the fatigue life of the valve has been calculated using the Paris law of the material with an effective stress intensity factor Keff. The good agreement with experimental fatigue life allows to perform new improved designs using the methodology presented.  相似文献

Analysis of the crack growth propagation process under mixed-mode loading   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In the present paper, a computational model for crack growth analysis under Mode I/II conditions is formulated. The focus is on two issues – crack path simulation and fatigue life estimation. The finite element method is used together with the maximum principal stress criterion and the crack growth rate equation based on the equivalent stress intensity factor. To determine the mixed-mode stress intensity factors, quarter-point (Q-P) singular finite elements are employed. For verification purposes, a plate with crack emanating from the edge of a hole is examined. The crack path of the plate made of 2024 T3 Al Alloy is investigated experimentally and simulated by using the finite element method with the maximum tangential stress criterion. Then, the validation of the procedure is illustrated by applying the numerical evaluation of the curvilinear crack propagation in the polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) beam and the Arcan specimen made of Al Alloy for which experimental results are available in the literature. In order to estimate fatigue life up to failure of the plate with crack emanating from the edge of a hole, the polynomial expression is evaluated for the equivalent stress intensity factor using values of stress intensity factors obtained from the finite element analysis. Additionally, the fatigue life up to failure of the Arcan specimen is analyzed for different loading angles and compared with experimental data. Excellent correlations between the computed and experimental results are obtained.  相似文献

Corrosive environment causes corrosion pits at material surface and reduces the fatigue strength significantly. Fatigue crack usually initiates at and propagates from these locations. In this paper, a general methodology for fatigue life prediction for corroded specimens is proposed. The proposed methodology combines an asymptotic stress intensity factor solution and a power law corrosion pit growth function for fatigue life prediction of corroded specimens. First, a previously developed asymptotic interpolation method is proposed to calculate the stress intensity factor (SIF) for the crack at notch roots. Next, a growing semi-circular notch is assumed to exist on the specimen’s surface under corrosive environments. The notch growth rate is different under different corrosion conditions and is assumed to be a power function. Fatigue life can be predicted using the crack growth analysis assuming a crack propagating from the notch root. Plasticity correction is included into the proposed methodology for medium-to-low cycle fatigue analysis. The proposed methodology is validated using experimental fatigue life testing data of aluminum alloys and steels. Very good agreement is observed between experimental observations and model predictions.  相似文献

A fatigue prediction approach is proposed using fracture mechanics for laser beam welded Al-alloy joints under stationary variable amplitude loading. The proposed approach was based on the constant crack open stress intensity factor in each loading block for stationary variable amplitude loading. The influence of welding residual stress on fatigue life under stationary variable amplitude was taken into account by the change of crack open stress intensity factor in each loading block. The residual stress relaxation coefficient β = 0.5 was proposed to consider the residual stress relaxation for the laser beam welded Al-alloy joints during the fatigue crack growth process. Fatigue life prediction results showed that a very good agreement between experimental and estimated results was obtained.  相似文献

Laser welding is increasingly used for the fabrication of lightweight and cost-effective integral stiffened panels in modern civil aircraft. As these structures age in service, the issue of the effect of corrosion on their damage tolerance requires attention. In this work, laboratory data on the influence of salt fog corrosion on the fatigue behavior of cladded 6156 T4 aluminum alloy laser welded specimens are presented. The experimental investigation was performed on 6156 T4 laser butt welded sheets. Prior to fatigue testing the welded joints were exposed to laboratory salt fog corrosion exposure for 720 h. The results showed that the clad layer offers sufficient corrosion protection both on base metal and the weld. Fatigue testing was followed by standard metallographic analysis in order to identify fatigue crack initiation sites. Crack initiation is located in all welded samples near the weld reinforcement which induces a significant stress concentration. Localized corrosion attack of the clad layer, in the form of pitting corrosion, creates an additional stress concentration which accelerates crack initiation leading to shorter fatigue life relative to the uncorroded samples. The potency of small corrosion pits to act as stress concentration sites has been assessed analytically. The above results indicate that despite the general corrosion protection offered by the clad layer, the localized attack described above leads to inferior fatigue performance, a fact that should be taken under consideration in the design and maintenance of these structures.  相似文献

It is a traditional that the fatigue crack growth behavior is sensitive to microstructure in threshold regime, while it is sensitive to R‐ratio in Paris regime. Fatigue test is carried out for welded joints of a Q345 steel where the compact tension specimens with 3.8 and 12.5 mm thickness are used, and comparisons of fatigue crack growth behavior between base metal and a few different locations in the welded joint are considered in Paris regime. Welding residual stresses are removed by heat treatment to focus the study on the microstructural effect. It is shown that fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) in the base metal is not sensitive to R‐ratio, but the FCGR increases in the overheated zone, the fusion zone and the weld metal zone with R‐ratio increasing. To the low R‐ratio, FCGR in the three zones is smaller than that in the base metal, but they approximate the same with base metal under the high R‐ratio. The mechanism of fatigue crack growth is analyzed through crack path in microstructures and SEM fractograph. The coarse‐grained ferrite in the base metal is of benefit to relaxation of the average stress at the crack tip, and the fatigue crack growth predicts branching and deflection within above different locations in the welded joint. These tortuous crack paths with crack branching and deflection will promote crack closure as well as crack‐tip stress shielding and then resulted in higher crack growth resistance.  相似文献

In this work, fatigue crack propagation in thin-walled aluminium alloy structure with two friction stir welded T joints has been simulated numerically. Crack propagation in stiffened part of the structure between two friction stir welded T joints is analysed by using the eXtended Finite Element Method (XFEM), including software ABAQUS, as well as MORFEO, for modelling and results display. Tensile fatigue loading is applied, with stress ratio R = 0, and maximum stress σmax = 10 MPa. Material properties (Al 2024-T351, as used in aeronautical industry) in different welded joints zones are adopted from available literature data. Following results are obtained by numerical analysis: stress–strain and displacement state in the structure, position of the crack tip and value of stress intensity factor for every crack propagation step, as well as the structural life estimation, i.e. number of load cycles, N, also for each crack propagation step. Using these results the number of cycles at which the crack starts to propagate in an unstable manner is predicted.  相似文献

This paper is devoted to the effect of corrosion on the gigacycle fatigue strength of a martensitic-bainitic hot rolled steel used for manufacturing offshore mooring chains for petroleum platforms. Smooth specimens were tested under fully reversed tension between 106 and 1010 cycles in three testing conditions and environments: (i) in air, (ii) in air after pre-corrosion and (iii) in air under real time artificial sea water flow. The fatigue strength at greater than 108 cycles is reduced by a factor more than five compared with non-corroded specimens. Fatigue cracks initiate at corrosion pits due to pre-corrosion, if any, or pits resulting from corrosion in real time during the cyclic loading. It is shown that under sea water flow, the fatigue life in the gigacycle regime is mainly governed by the corrosion process. Furthermore, the calculation of the mode I stress intensity factor at hemispherical surface defects (pits) combined with the Paris-Hertzberg-Mc Clintock crack growth rate model shows that fatigue crack initiation regime represents most of the fatigue life.  相似文献

Abstract: In this paper, strain‐based fatigue life prediction method has been used to estimate the fatigue crack initiation life of spot‐welded joints of Mild Steel JSC270D and Ultra‐High Strength Steel JSC980Y. To do so, the joints were simulated using three‐dimensional finite‐element (FE) models, and then nonlinear FE analysis was performed to obtain the local stress and strain ranges and finally, the Morrow equation was applied to estimate the crack initiation lives. The results have been compared with those obtained from experimental crack growth morphology. In addition, the difference between fatigue limits for smooth specimens and spot‐welded joints for mentioned materials has been briefly discussed. It has been shown that mean stress values in the Ultra‐High Strength Steel can significantly decrease the fatigue limit of spot‐welded joint because even at very low load level the stresses exceed the yield point at the root of nugget of spot‐welded joint, while the amount of mean stress in the Mild Steel for the same load level is much less than that of Ultra‐High Strength Steel. The comparison between numerical results of fatigue crack initiation lives and experimental data provided good agreement between numerical predictions and crack growth morphology observations. The results also shows that in some cases, depending on the joint type, the life spent in the nucleation phase can be an important part of the final failure lifetime.  相似文献

Corrosion fatigue behaviour and microstructural characterisation of G20Mn5QT cast steel are investigated in simulated seawater. Fractography is performed by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The macroscale fracture surface and microstructure of the failed specimen are acquired including the crack initiation, crack propagation, and pitting evolution. The maximum cyclic stress (S) versus number of cycles to failure (N) curves is derived by three‐parameter fatigue curve method. Fatigue life is predominantly controlled by the corrosion pitting‐induced crack initiation when tested in simulated seawater at lower stress levels. As the maximum cyclic stress is less than 185 MPa, the chloride ion erosion is the main influence factor, which affects the fatigue failure of the G20Mn5QT cast steel in simulated seawater.  相似文献

CRACK NUCLEATION AND PROPAGATION IN BLADE STEEL MATERIAL   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Stress corrosion cracking and corrosion fatigue of 12 Cr steel in sodium chloride solution has been investigated. Tests have been performed in air at room temperature and in aqueous solution with 22% NaCl at 80°C. The influence of corrosion pits on crack nucleation has been investigated. On fracture surfaces tested in environment (22% NaCl solution), crack initiation was observed in correspondence with corrosion pits; in this case fatigue life can be described using a fracture mechanics approach. The ΔK value for crack nucleation from a pit in rotating bending fatigue tests is very low in air (about 3 MPa√m). The results of slow strain rate tests on smooth specimens show that there is a threshold stress intensity, KISCC, of about 15 MPa√m and a plateau in stress corrosion crack growth rate of about 10-5mm/s.  相似文献

This paper presents a probabilistic fatigue crack growth life prediction methodology for spot‐welded joints under variable amplitude loading history. The loading is multi‐axial and is obtained from transient response analysis of a vehicle model using finite‐element analysis. A three‐dimensional (3D) finite element model of a simplified joint with four spot welds is developed, and the static stress analysis of this joint is performed. Then the fatigue crack inside the base material sheet is modelled as a surface crack. Probabilistic crack growth model is combined with the stress analysis result to develop a probabilistic fatigue crack growth life prediction methodology for spot welds. This new method is implemented with MSC/NASTRAN and MSC/FATIGUE and is useful for the reliability assessment of spot‐welded joints against fatigue crack growth.  相似文献

The existing design rules give quite general guidelines to the fatigue assessment of different types of welded joints. The goal of this investigation was to give designers some tools, which would allow more precise assessment of the effect of dimensional variations on the fatigue strength. Therefore the fatigue behaviour of 12 common types of welded joints has been studied parametrically. Two-dimensional (2D) finite element models of the joint were made and evaluated using plane strain linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) calculations. The as-welded condition was assumed with the result that no crack initiation period was considered and stress ranges were fully effective. A maximum tangential stress criterion with the Paris’ crack growth law was used to predict the growth rate and direction of root and toe cracks under mixed mode KI-KII conditions. The effects of weld size and joint dimension ratios on the fatigue strength were systematically studied. In addition to tensile loading, bending and combined tension/bending moment loading in both directions are examined for positive and negative mean stress.  相似文献

Abstract— The use of linear elastic fracture mechanics to describe the kinetics of fatigue fracture of welded joints with high welding residual stresses (WRS) is experimentally evaluated in this paper. A correction analysis is used to show that the crack propagation rate of cracks in joints, as a function of the applied stress intensity factor, is linear on a log-log scale in the Paris regime when non-uniform fields of WRS are superimposed on the applied cyclic loading. It is shown that crack growth rates in joints with high WRS do not depend on the characteristics of the loading cycle. The parameters of the Paris exponential equation are determined by the initial WRS distribution, by the range of cyclic stresses and by the load ratio. A method for calculating the cyclic crack resistance of joints is proposed which explicitly allows for a non-uniform field of WRS that influences the fatigue crack growth rate.  相似文献

Investigations were carried out into the fatigue crack growth resistance of welded joints in structural titanium alloys contaminated with embrittling impurities. The crack closure effect was taken into account so that it is possible to determine the effective stress intensity factor. The results show that the fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) depends strongly on the magnitude and direction of residual stresses. The dependence of the FCGR in welded joints and structural titanium alloys on the range of the effective stress intensity factor is invariant to the magnitude and direction of the residual welding stresses.Translated from Problemy Prochnosti, No. 11, pp. 8–14, November, 1990.  相似文献

T‐welded joints are commonly employed in ship and ocean structures. The fatigue failure of structure components subjected to cyclic loading always occurs in T‐welded joints because of the metallurgical differences, tensile residual stress fields and stress concentrations. The former researches about T‐welded joints fatigue have in common that the boundary condition needs to be taken into account as an influencing parameter to predict the crack propagation during cyclic loading. In this paper, the crack growth behaviour in T‐welded joint processed with Q345D steel (Pingxiang Iron & Steel Co., Ltd, Hukou, Jiangxi Province in China) under the fatigue loading was analysed via analytical model and verified via experiment. The results show that the influence of boundary condition should be considered in T‐welded joint structure during crack propagation in weld toe area. The correction factor concerning the effect of boundary condition and modified Paris' equation was proposed according to the experimental results and verified by the following repeated experiments.  相似文献

This paper is focused on the effect of sea water corrosion on the gigacycle fatigue strength of a martensitic–bainitic hot rolled steel R5 used for manufacturing off-shore mooring chains for petroleum platforms in the North Sea. Crack initiation fatigue tests in the regime of 106 to 1010 cycles were carried out on smooth specimens under three different environment conditions: (i) without any corrosion (virgin state) in air, (ii) in air after pre-corrosion, and (iii) in-situ corrosion-fatigue under artificial sea water flow. A drastic effect of sea water corrosion was found: the median fatigue strength beyond 108 cycles is divided by 5 compared to virgin state specimens. The crack initiation sites were corrosion pits caused by pre-corrosion or created during corrosion-fatigue under sea water flow. Furthermore some sub-surface and internal crack initiations were observed on specimens without any corrosion (virgin state). Crack propagation curves were obtained in mode I in air and under sea water flow. Calculation of the stress intensity factor at the tip of cracks emanating from hemispherical surface pits combined with the Paris–Hertzberg–Mc Clintock crack growth rate model showed that fatigue crack initiation period represents most of the fatigue life in the VHCF regime. Additional original experiments have shown physical evidences that the fatigue strength in the gigacycle regime under sea water flow is mainly governed by the corrosion process with a strong coupling between cyclic loading and corrosion.  相似文献

In this paper, a variable radius for the plastic zone is introduced and a maximum principal stress criterion is proposed for the prediction of crack initiation and growth. It is assumed that the direction of crack initiation coincides with the direction of the maximum principal stress. The von Mises yield criterion is applied to define the plastic zone, instead of assuming a plastic zone with a constant distance r from the crack tip. An improvement is made to this fracture criterion, and the criterion is extended to study the crack growth characteristics of mixed mode cracks. Based on the concept of frictional stress intensity factor, kf, the rate of fatigue crack propagation, db/dN, is postulated to be a function of the effective stress intensity factor range, Δkeff. Subsequently, this concept is applied to predict crack growth due to fatigue loads. The proposed crack growth model is discussed by comparing the experimental results with those obtained using the maximum principal stress criterion.  相似文献
