The latent thermal energy storage system of the shell-and-tube type during charging and discharging has been analysed in this paper. An experimental and numerical investigation of transient forced convective heat transfer between the heat transfer fluid (HTF) with moderate Prandtl numbers and the tube wall, heat conduction through the wall and solid–liquid phase change of the phase change material (PCM), based on the enthalpy formulation, has been presented. A fully implicit two-dimensional control volume Fortran computer code, with algorithm for non-isothermal phase transition, has been developed for the solution of the corresponding mathematical model. The comparison between numerical predictions and experimental data shows good agreement for both paraffin non-isothermal melting and isothermal solidification. In order to provide guidelines for system performance and design optimisation, unsteady temperature distributions of the HTF, tube wall and the PCM have been obtained by a series of numerical calculations for various HTF working conditions and various geometric parameters, and the thermal behaviour of the latent thermal energy storage unit during charging and discharging has been simulated.

The time mismatch between energy availability and energy demand with solar domestic hot water (SDHW) systems is often solved using energy storage. Energy storage systems typically employ water for thermal energy storage, however, water storage takes up considerable space and weight due to the large volumes required under certain conditions. A latent heat energy storage system (LHESS) may provide a valuable solution to the space and weight issue, while also correcting the energy mismatch by storing energy in phase change materials (PCMs) when it is available, dispensing energy when it is in demand, and acting as a heat exchanger when there is supply and demand simultaneously. PCMs are advantageous as energy storage materials due to their high energy density which reduces the space requirements for energy storage. However, heat transfer problems arise due to the inherently low thermal conductivity of PCMs. Simultaneous charging and discharging has not been addressed in literature making questionable the ability of a LHESS to operate as a heat exchanger during the mode of operation. The main objective of this research is to study the heat transfer processes and phase change behavior of a PCM during simultaneous charging and discharging of a LHESS.In Part 2 of this paper, experiments are performed using a vertical cylindrical LHESS which is charged and discharged simultaneously to replicate latent heat energy storage paired with a SDHW system with simultaneous energy supply and demand. Dodecanoic acid is used as the PCM. Experimental results for simultaneous operations are presented, under various scenarios and flow rates for both the hot and cold heat transfer fluids. The ability of the system to directly transfer heat between the hot and cold heat transfer fluids is studied, and the results found during consecutive, or separate, charging and discharging, presented in Part 1 of this paper, are compared to the results found during simultaneous charging and discharging. It was found that natural convection in the melted PCM clearly provides an advantage towards direct heat exchange between the hot and cold heat transfer fluid; while the low thermal conductivity of solid PCM provides a barrier to this direct energy exchange.

The charging and discharging rates of a phase change material (PCM) in a horizontal latent heat storage unit (LHSU) is largely influenced by the lower thermal conductivity of the PCM. In the present research, four different configurations of longitudinal fins are proposed to augment the heat transfer in horizontal shell and tube type LHSUs. Numerical investigations are reported to establish the thermal performance augmentation with rectangular, triangular, and Y‐shaped (bifurcated) fins. From the results, it has been inferred that all fin configurations provide a faster charging and discharging rate. In the present set of geometric dimensions of LHSU considered, a reduction in charging time of 68.71% is evaluated for case III (three rectangular fins with one fin positioned in the area of the heat transfer fluid [HTF] surface) and case V (two bifurcated fins with one fin positioned in the area of the HTF surface). Moreover, overall cycle (charging + discharging) time is reduced by 58.3% for case III. Employment of fins results in a faster rate of absorption and extraction of energy from the PCM.

Thermal energy storage is very important to eradicate the discrepancy between energy supply and energy demand and to improve the energy efficiency of solar energy systems. Latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) is more useful than sensible energy storage due to the high storage capacity per unit volume/mass at nearly constant temperatures. This review presents the previous works on thermal energy storage used for air conditioning systems and the application of phase change materials (PCMs) in different parts of the air conditioning networks, air distribution network, chilled water network, microencapsulated slurries, thermal power and heat rejection of the absorption cooling. Recently, researchers studied the heat transfer enhancement of the thermal energy storage with PCMs because most phase change materials have low thermal conductivity, which causes a long time for charging and discharging process. It is expected that the design of latent heat thermal energy storage will reduce the cost and the volume of air conditioning systems and networks.

A numerical and experimental investigation of phase change process dominated by heat conduction in a thermal storage unit is presented in this paper. The thermal energy storage involves a shell and tube arrangement where paraffin wax as phase change material (PCM) is filled in the shell. Water as heat transfer fluid (HTF) is passed inside the tube for both charging and discharging cycles. According to the conservation of energy, a simple numerical method called alternative iteration between thermal resistance and temperature has been developed for the analysis of heat transfer between the PCM and HTF during charging and discharging cycles. Experimental arrangement has been designed and built to examine the physical validity of the numerical results. Comparison between the numerical predictions and the experimental data shows a good agreement. A detailed parametric study is also carried out for various flow parameters and system dimensions such as different mass flow rates, inlet temperatures of HTF, tube thicknesses and radii. Numerical study reveals that the contribution of the inlet temperature of HTF has much influence than mass flow rate in terms of storage operating time and HTF outlet temperature. Tube radius is a more important parameter than thickness for better heat transfer between HTF and PCM.

The objective of the present work is to investigate experimentally the thermal behavior of a packed bed of combined sensible and latent heat thermal energy storage (TES) unit. A TES unit is designed, constructed and integrated with constant temperature bath/solar collector to study the performance of the storage unit. The TES unit contains paraffin as phase change material (PCM) filled in spherical capsules, which are packed in an insulated cylindrical storage tank. The water used as heat transfer fluid (HTF) to transfer heat from the constant temperature bath/solar collector to the TES tank also acts as sensible heat storage (SHS) material. Charging experiments are carried out at constant and varying (solar energy) inlet fluid temperatures to examine the effects of inlet fluid temperature and flow rate of HTF on the performance of the storage unit. Discharging experiments are carried out by both continuous and batchwise processes to recover the stored heat. The significance of time wise variation of HTF and PCM temperatures during charging and discharging processes is discussed in detail and the performance parameters such as instantaneous heat stored and cumulative heat stored are also studied. The performance of the present system is compared with that of the conventional SHS system. It is found from the discharging experiments that the combined storage system employing batchwise discharging of hot water from the TES tank is best suited for applications where the requirement is intermittent.

This paper addresses a numerical and experimental investigation of a thermal energy storage unit involving phase change process dominated by heat conduction. The thermal energy storage unit involves a triplex concentric tube with phase change material (PCM) filling in the middle channel, with hot heat transfer fluid (HHTF) flowing outer channel during charging process and cold heat transfer fluid (CHTF) flowing inner channel during discharging process. A simple numerical method according to conversation of energy, called temperature & thermal resistance iteration method has been developed for the analysis of PCM solidification and melting in the triplex concentric tube. To test the physical validity of the numerical results, an experimental apparatus has been designed and built by which the effect of the inlet temperature and the flow rate of heat transfer fluid (HTF, including HHTF and CHTF) on the thermal energy storage has been studied. Comparison between the numerical predictions and the experimental data shows good agreement. Graphical results including fluid temperature and interface of solid and liquid phase of PCM versus time and axial position, time-wise variation of energy stored/released by the system were presented and discussed.

The objective of this paper is to study the thermal performance of latent cool thermal energy storage system using packed bed containing spherical capsules filled with phase change material during charging and discharging process. According to the energy balance of the phase change material (PCM) and heat transfer fluid (HTF), a mathematical model of packed bed is conducted. n-tetradecane is taken as PCM and aqueous ethylene glycol solution of 40% volumetric concentration is considered as HTF. The temperatures of the PCM and HTF, solid and melt fraction and cool stored and released rate with time are simulated. The effects of the inlet temperature and flow rate of HTF, porosity of packed bed and diameter of capsules on the melting time, solidification time, cool stored and released rate during charging and discharging process are also discussed.

Solar thermal applications require some means of thermal energy storage. Amongst several storage concepts, latent heat storage is quite suitable because of its high storage density and almost constant temperature during charging and discharging. The temperature range between 200 and 300°C is considered to be important for solar total energy systems. In this temperature range, sodium nitrate and its mixed salts with other nitrates including eutectic and off-eutectic salts are candidates.

The present paper deals with heat transfer in a latent heat storage unit utilizing these salts. A method of rough estimation of the thermal conductivity of the storage materials is described, and the temperature history of the storage material experimentally obtained is compared with numerical solutions and found to be in reasonably good agreement.

It is seen that the temperature of the heat transfer surface quickly drops soon after the appearance of a solid phase due to low thermal conductivity of these salts. Ways to avoid this temperature drop are discussed.

This work aims to evaluate the energy and the exergy performance of an integrated phase change material (PCM) solar collector with latent heat storage in transient conditions. A theoretical model based on the first and the second laws of thermodynamics is developed to predict the thermal behaviour of the system. The effect of natural convection on heat during the melting process is taken into account using an effective thermal conductivity. Influence of PCM thicknesses on the melt fraction, on the energy stored and on the exergy destroyed are studied during charging and discharging processes. Results indicate that the complete melting time is shorter than the solidification time. The latent heat storage system increases the heating requirements at night and reduces the exergy efficiency.

Thermal energy storage improves the load stability and efficiency of solar thermal power plants by reducing fluctuations and intermittency inherent to solar radiation. This paper presents a numerical study on the transient response of packed bed latent heat thermal energy storage system in removing fluctuations in the heat transfer fluid (HTF) temperature during the charging and discharging period. The packed bed consisting of spherical shaped encapsulated phase change materials (PCMs) is integrated in an organic Rankine cycle-based solar thermal power plant for electricity generation. A comprehensive numerical model is developed using flow equations for HTF and two-temperature non-equilibrium energy equation for heat transfer, coupled with enthalpy method to account for phase change in PCM. Systematic parametric studies are performed to understand the effect of mass flow rate, inlet charging system, storage system dimension and encapsulation of the shell diameter on the dynamic behaviour of the storage system. The overall effectiveness and transient temperature difference in HTF temperature in a cycle are computed for different geometrical and operational parameters to evaluate the system performance. It is found that the ability of the latent heat thermal energy storage system to store and release energy is significantly improved by increasing mass flow rate and inlet charging temperature. The transient variation in the HTF temperature can be effectively reduced by decreasing porosity.

Thermal conductivity enhancement in a latent heat storage system
Latent heat storage systems especially those employing organic materials have been reported to exhibit a rather slow thermal response. This is mainly due to the relatively low thermal conductivity of organic latent heat materials. In this study, experiments were carried out to investigate a method of enhancing the thermal conductivity of paraffin wax by embedding aluminum powder in it. The size of the aluminum powder particles was 80 μm. The tested mass fractions in the PCM-aluminum composite material were 0.1, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5 of aluminum. The used mass fraction in the experimental work was 0.5.The experiments were conducted by using a compact PCM solar collector. In this collector, the absorber-container unit performed the function of absorbing the solar energy and storing the phase change material (PCM). The solar energy was stored in the PCM and was discharged to cold water flowing in pipes located inside the PCM. Charging and discharging processes were carried out. The propagation of the melting and freezing fronts was studied during the charging and the discharging processes. The time wise temperatures of the PCM were recorded during the processes of charging and discharging. The solar intensity was recorded for the charging process. It was found that the charging time was reduced by approximately 60% by adding aluminum powder in the wax. In the discharging process, experiments were conducted for different water flow rates of 9-20.4 kg/h. It was found that the useful heat gained increased when adding aluminum powder in the wax as compared to the case of pure paraffin wax. The heat transfer characteristics were studied.

Thermal energy storage units that utilize latent heat storage materials have received increased attention in the recent years because of their relatively large heat storage capacities and isothermal behavior during charging and discharging. In this study, an analytical approach is presented for the prediction of temperature during the solidification in a two-dimensional rectangular latent heat storage using a phase change material (PCM) with internal plate fins. The basic energy equation is formulated accounting for the presence of a heat thermal fluid (HTF) on the walls. A two-dimensional numerical model is developed based on the enthalpy method to predict the distribution temperature of the fin and solid–liquid interface in storage. Results from the analytical solution and numerical model show a good agreement. The developed analytical model estimates satisfactorily the solidification time of PCM in storage, which is useful in the design of PCM-based thermal energy storages and cooling systems.

Solar energy is receiving a lot of attention recently since it is a clean, renewable, and sustainable energy. Solar energy is used for space heating, power generation and other applications. A major limitation however is that it is available for only about 2000 h a year in many places. Therefore it is critical to find ways to store solar thermal energy for the off hours. Sensible heat of material has been used for storing thermal energy but due to material properties this type of thermal storage has limitations. Using encapsulated phase change materials is potentially a better way to store thermal energy with the associated reversible heat transfer. The present work deals with certain aspects of storing solar thermal energy in high temperature phase change materials with melting points above 400 °C. The objective is the storage of large amounts of solar energy (~600 MWh). Two kinds of encapsulated capsules are considered; zinc encapsulated in nickel and eutectic salt mixtures (57 mol% NaCl and 43 mol% MgCl2) in stainless steel encapsulation. Diffusion and phase change computations are reported here in the form of temperature profiles of the phase changing and encapsulated materials for spherical capsules. The time for heating and melting during charging (storage of thermal energy into capsulated phase change material) and the time for cooling and solidification during discharging (retrieval of thermal energy) are presented for both zinc–nickel and salt–stainless steel systems. As per expectations, the time for heat transfer is much shorter for liquid heat transfer media compared to those for gases. Moreover, the heat transfer times are shorter with smaller sizes of capsules.

Latent thermal energy storage system (LTES) is an integral part of concentrating solar power (CSP) plants for storing sun’s energy during its intermittent diurnal availability in the form of latent heat of a phase change material (PCM). The advantages of an LTES include its isothermal operation and high energy storage density, while the low thermal conductivity of the PCM used in LTES poses a significant disadvantage due to the reduction in the rate at which the PCM can be melted (charging) or solidified (discharging). The present study considers an approach to reducing the thermal resistance of LTES through embedding heat pipes to augment the energy transfer from the heat transfer fluid (HTF) to the PCM. Using a thermal resistance network model of a shell and tube LTES with embedded heat pipes, detailed parametric studies are carried out to assess the influence of the heat pipe and the LTES geometric and operational parameters on the performance of the system during charging and discharging. The physical model is coupled with a numerical optimization method to identify the design and operating parameters of the heat pipe embedded LTES system that maximizes energy transferred, energy transfer rate and effectiveness.

This paper is concerned with an experimental investigation into the dynamic behaviour of single spherical thermal (ice) storage elements. Three glass spheres having radii of 4.07, 3.5 and 3.135 cm were chosen for this study. A flowing water–glycol solution over a range of temperature varying between 4.5 and 12°C (during melting) and between ?9.5 and ?4.4°C (during freezing) was used as a heat transfer fluid (HTF) during the tests. The apparatus, method and results are described. Photographic means were used to characterize the water–ice interface position and its shape during discharging (melting) process. However, during charging (freezing) process a new method was devised for the same objectives. Several interesting results have been obtained from this study. Results obtained showed that the charging and discharging rates were constant with respect to the dimensionless time to at least 90% of the storage capacity of the single spherical ice storage element. These important and new results have allowed the formulation, described in the paper, of simple empirical equations describing the charging and discharging rates for a single spherical thermal (ice) storage element at any instant time period within the range of HTF temperature and spherical element size used. It is believed that these equations will be useful to colleagues interested in modelling the dynamic behaviour of thermal (ice) storage using spherical elements as phase change. Effects of the HTF temperature and capsule size on the rate of energy charged and discharged from a single spherical enclosure are presented and discussed.
