Species zonation patterns across tidal gradients in mangrove forests are formed by successful seedling establishment and maintained by replacement of adults by conspecific seedlings. These two processes rarely have been examined experimentally in neotropical mangal. We studied survivorship and growth of seedlings of two species of mangrove, Rhizophora mangle L. and Avicennia germinans (L.) Steam, across a tidal gradient in Belize, Central America. Propagules of each species were planted in common gardens at tidal elevations corresponding to lowest low water (LLW), mean water (MW), and highest high water (HHW). Sixty-nine percent of Rhizophora seedlings planted at MW and 56% of those planted at LLW survived 1 year. Forty-seven percent of MW Avicennia seedlings also survived 1 year. No individuals of either species survived at HHW, and neither did any LLW Avicennia seedlings. Among the surviving Rhizophora seedlings, LLW seedlings grew more rapidly in terms of height, diameter, leaf production, and biomass than did MW seedlings. Insect herbivory was twice as high on MW seedlings as on LLW Rhizophora seedlings. We also examined the response of established Rhizophora seedlings to experimental removal of the adult Rhizophora canopy. Seedlings in canopy removal areas had higher survivorship, grew twice as fast, produced more leaves, and had less than half the herbivory of seedlings growing beneath an intact canopy. These results provide insights into underlying causes and maintenance of zonation in Caribbean mangrove forests.  相似文献

Whereas the increasing knowledge on tropical coastal wetlands highlights the ecological and economical importance of such ecosystems, anthropogenic activities within the coastal zone have caused substantial, irreversible losses of mangrove areas in the Lesser Antilles during the last decades. Such a paradox gives strength to compensatory policy efforts toward mangrove restoration. We review the available knowledge on the ecology of mangrove growth and recovery in the Lesser Antilles as a contribution to possible restoration projects in such islands. Distribution of species follows a general pattern of seaward/landward zonation according to their respective tolerance to flooding and to pore‐water salinity. An experimental study of seedling growth following simulated oil spill has documented the tolerance of Rhizophora mangle and Avicennia germinans seedlings to oil concentration in soils and the effects of natural biotic and abiotic factors on seedlings growth and survival. Monitoring mangrove recovery following hurricane Hugo has given information on growth patterns, from seedling to sapling stages, according to species and site conditions. Forest recovery was mostly due to pre‐established seedlings. For the large Rhizophora propagules, buoyancy appears to be a quite inefficient way of dispersal far inland from the sea shore or riversides. Causes of recovery failure are discussed. From these results we attempt to answer the questions when, where, how to plant mangroves, and what species to use.  相似文献

Mangrove forests along many tropical coastlines are frequently andseverely damaged by hurricanes. The ability of mangrove forests to regeneratefollowing hurricanes has been noted, but changes that occur in vegetationfollowing disturbance by hurricane winds and storm tides have not been studied. We measured changes in plant community structure and environmental variables intwo fringe mangrove forests in south Florida, USA that experienced high windvelocities and storm tides associated with Hurricane Andrew (August1992). Loss of the forest canopy stimulated regeneration via seedlinggrowth and recruitment, as well as resprouting of some trees that survived thehurricane. Initial regeneration differed among species in both forests:Rhizophora mangle L. regenerated primarily via growth ofseedlings present at the time of the hurricane (i.e., release of advancerecruits), but many trees of Avicennia germinans(L.) Stearn and Laguncularia racemosa Gaertn.f.resprouted profusely from dormant epicormic buds. In one forest, which wasformerly dominated by Laguncularia, high densities ofRhizophora seedlings survived the hurricane and grew toform dense stands of saplings and small trees ofRhizophora. In the other forest, there were lowerdensitiesof surviving Rhizophora seedlings (possibly due tohigher storm tide), and extensive bare areas that were colonized byAvicennia, Laguncularia, andherbaceous species. This forest, predominantly Rhizophoraat the time of the hurricane, now contains stands of saplings and small treesofall three species, interspersed with patches dominated by herbaceous plants. These findings indicate that moderately damaged fringe forests may regenerateprimarily via release of Rhizophora advance recruits, leading to single-species stands. In severely damaged forests, seedlingrecruitment may be more important and lead to mixed-species stands.Regeneration of mangrove forests following hurricanes can involve differentpathways produced by complex interactions between resprouting capability, seedling survival, post-hurricane seedling recruitment, and colonizationby herbaceous vegetation. These differences in relative importance ofregeneration pathways, which may result in post-hurricane forestsdifferent from their pre-hurricane structure, suggest that models forregeneration of mangrove forests will be more complex than directregeneration models proposed for other tropical forests whereregeneration after hurricanes is dominated by resprouting.  相似文献

Coarse woody debris (CWD) plays an important role in long-term carbon storage in forest ecosystems. However, few studies have examined CWD in mangrove forests. A secondary mangrove forest on an estuary of the Trat River showed different structures along vegetation zones ranging from the river’s edge to inland parts of the forest (the SonneratiaAvicennia, Avicennia, Rhizophora, and Xylocarpus zones, respectively). The mass distribution of CWD stock in downed wood and standing dead trees along these vegetation zones was evaluated. Most of the CWD stock in the SonneratiaAvicennia and Avicennia zones was found in downed wood, while it mainly accumulated in standing dead trees in the Rhizophora and Xylocarpus zones. The total mass of CWD stock that accumulated in each zone ranged from 1.56–8.39 t ha?1, depending on the forest structure and inundation regimes. The annual woody debris flux in each zone was calculated by summing the necromass (excluding foliage) of dead trees and coarse litter from 2010 to 2013. The average woody debris flux was 5.4 t ha?1 year?1, and its zonal variation principally depended on the necromass production that resulted from forest succession, high tree-density, and lightning. Over all the zones, the above- and below-ground net primary production (ANPP and BNPP, respectively) was estimated at 18.0 and 3.6 t ha?1 year?1, respectively. The magnitude of BNPP and its contribution to the NPP was markedly increased when fine root production was taken into consideration. The contribution of the woody debris flux without root necromass to the ANPP ranged from 12 to 28%.  相似文献

This paper describes the frequency of occurrence and biodiversity of fungi from mangroves of the Godavari and Krishna deltas, on the east coast of India. Seventy three species were identified from Godavari and 67 from the Krishna mangroves. Fifty five species were common to both sites, 18 were found only at Godavari and 12 at Krishna mangroves. Verruculina enaliawas found to be very frequent at both sites with a higher frequency of occurrence at Godavari. Eutypa bathurstensis was very frequent at Godavari but only frequent at Krishna. Cirrenalia pygmea and Cryptosphaeria mangrovei were frequent at the Godavari mangrove, but were recorded occasionally at Krishna. Decaying samples of Rhizophora and Avicennia were studied in detail. Forty three species were common to both hosts, while 22 species were recorded only from Avicennia and 20 only from Rhizophora. Verruculina enalia was the only very frequent fungus recorded on both hosts with a lower percentage occurrence (14.8%) on R. apiculata as compared to Avicennia spp. (24.3%). Eutypa bathurstensis was the next most frequent fungus on Avicennia, while Rhizophila marina was next most frequent on Rhizophora. Dactylospora haliotrepha which was recorded frequently on Rhizophorawas infrequent on Avicennia.  相似文献

Propagules of Kandelia candel collected from the Zhangjiang estuary were planted in mangrove habitats along the intertidal gradient. The rooting rates of K. candel propagules varied spatially. The lowest rate occurred in Avicennia marina forest (69.7%). The rates were higher in K. candel forest (90.0%), at the fringe of the mangrove forest (89.3%) and on the bare tidal flat outside the mangrove forest (82.7%). After one year, the survival rates of seedlings planted under A. marina forest, K. candel forest, at the fringe of the mangrove forest, and on the bare tidal flat were 13.7%, 54.7%, 76.0%, and 34.7%, respectively. Among the surviving K. candel seedlings, those at the fringe of the mangrove forest and on the bare tidal flat had greater height, stem diameter, leaf number, leaf area, and biomass than those under A. marina and K. candel forests. These results demonstrated that establishment and growth of K. candel seedlings occurred successfully at the fringe of the mangrove forest, but were the worst under A. marina forest. The performance of K. candel seedlings was independent of physico-chemical characters of sediment. However, interspecies competition, propagule predation by insects and crabs, and the incident light had significant effects on seedling survival and growth.  相似文献

We investigated the influence of nutrient availability, specifically nitrogen, phosphorus and silicon on growth and community structure of phytoplankton from the Port Adelaide River estuary, South Australia. Two bioassay experiments were conducted. The first, Nutrich1, involved addition of nutrients in vitro to samples of the natural phytoplankton community from a single location in the upper estuary. The second, Nutrich2, involved nutrient addition and incubation of water from five locations in the estuary following inoculation with a `standardised' phytoplankton assemblage derived from laboratory cultures. In Nutrich1, enrichment with silicon led to greatly enhanced phytoplankton biomass due to increased growth of diatoms. Addition of nitrogen or phosphorus had little effect on phytoplankton growth. In Nutrich2, addition of nitrogen resulted in enhanced growth of phytoplankton in water collected from near the mouth the estuary, but there were no differences in growth among nutrient treatments for the remaining locations. Comparison of phytoplankton growth rate among locations revealed a trend of decreasing growth in moving towards the mouth of the estuary. This trend was unaffected by enrichment with nitrate, phosphate or silicate. We suggest that spatial variation in growth potential within the Port Adelaide River estuary may relate to variation in the concentration of nitrogen as ammonium.  相似文献

Current theory predicts that in low-density, seed-limited plant populations, seed predation will be more important than competition in determining the number of individuals that reach maturity. However, when plant density is high, competition for microsites suitable for establishment and growth is expected to have a relatively greater effect. This dichotomous perspective does not account for situations in which the risk of seed predation differs inside versus outside recruitment microsites. We report the results of a field experiment and sampling studies that demonstrate such an interaction between microsite quality and the risk of propagule predation in mangrove forests on the Caribbean coast of Panama, where it appears to play a key role in shaping the demography and dynamics of the mangrove, Rhizophora mangle. Rhizophora's water-borne propagules establish wherever they strand, but long-term sampling revealed that only those that do so in or near lightning-created canopy gaps survive and grow to maturity. These microsites afford better growth conditions than the surrounding understory and, as importantly, provide a refuge from predation by the scolytid beetle, Coccotrypes rhizophorae. This refuge effect was confirmed with a field experiment in which Rhizophora seedlings were planted at different positions relative to gap edges, from 5 m inside to 20 m outside the gap. Mortality due to beetle attack increased linearly from an average of 10% inside a gap to 72% at 20 m into the forest. The interaction between canopy disturbance and propagule predation may be having a large impact on the composition of our study forests. Being shade-tolerant, Rhizophora seedlings that escape or survive beetle attack can persist in the understory for years. However, the high rate of beetle-induced mortality effectively eliminates the contribution of advance regeneration by Rhizophora saplings to gap succession. This may explain why the shade-intolerant mangrove, Laguncularia racemosa, is able to co-dominate the canopy in low intertidal forests at our study sites.  相似文献

  1. In wetlands, hydrochory is one of the main mechanisms of seed dispersal and there is often synchrony between propagule production and the flood season. Different sources of disturbance can prevent seed dispersal to suitable sites, and if environmental conditions are not adequate for germination and seedling establishment, recruitment will be limited, affecting succession.
  2. We worked in a disturbed tropical freshwater swamp where the native grass Leersia hexandra has dominated open areas, creating a grass matrix that surrounds patches of swamp forest. Leersia grows vigorously, forming cushions of dry matter that cover the soil, forming a potential obstacle to seed dispersal. We asked whether the vegetative growth of this grass prevents the entry and dispersal of seeds of the tropical swamp tree Pachira aquatica, thwarting seed germination and seedling establishment, and arresting succession. We set up transects in the grass matrix in two zones: close to the river (R) and bordering the tree patches or fragments (F). We quantified tree seed and seedling presence, survival and growth in situ and experimentally introduced seeds and seedlings in the field and monitored seed germination and the survival and growth of their seedlings, as well as that of transplanted seedlings.
  3. There was a negative relationship between the number of seeds and established seedlings, and the distance to river or fragment (= −0.86, p < 0.001 for zone R; and = −0.77, p < 0.001 for zone F) and with the grass cushion (= −0.68, p = 0.005 for zone R; and = −0.66, p = 0.007 for zone F); the grass creating a barrier to dispersal. When seeds were sown after clearing the grass cushion, germination success was high, so this stage is not limited. The transplanted seedlings had better survival and a greater final height than the seedlings of the sown seeds. Grass cover had a negative effect on both types of seedlings. Seedling survival rates were inversely related to grass cover, showing that seedlings overgrown by grass had low survival rates. Flooding is a stress factor for seedlings and produced mortality, in addition to the effects of the grass.
  4. Together, the field survey and the experiment show that succession is being arrested in two ways: (1) by limiting seed dispersal because the grass cushion slows the dispersal and penetration of seeds into the vegetation; and (2) by limiting seedling establishment because the grass competes for space and light. Our results show that even where the grass is native, slower growing, seed-dependent species may struggle to compete and establish. If grass cover is increasing, these swamps are very vulnerable to a decrease in area because it is very difficult for them to regenerate naturally.

The relative importance of seed, habitat and microhabitat limitation has rarely been investigated for invasive non-native species, although this is critical for their effective management and for predicting future range expansion. Rosa rugosa is an abundant non-native shrub in coastal habitats of NW Europe; it is common along the Baltic coast but more scarce in exposed dunes of the North Sea. To investigate whether invasion of exposed dunes is limited by seed, habitat and microhabitat limitation, seedling emergence and establishment were examined in a factorial sowing, transplant and disturbance experiment. Twenty plots were randomly placed in each of five dune habitats (white dune, Empetrum dune, grey dune, outer dune heath, inner dune heath), and studied over 2 years. Seedling emergence in control subplots was zero in all habitats, whereas 96% and 98% of the undisturbed and disturbed seeded subplots produced seedlings. Disturbance had a positive effect on emergence and subsequent survival in white dune, outer and inner dune heath. Seedling survival and growth, and growth of transplanted seedlings, were markedly lower in grey dune. These findings indicate that establishment of R. rugosa is seed-limited in coastal dune habitats, and that the species is able to establish in both active and fixed dunes once seeds have arrived. Although differential seedling emergence and growth indicate that habitats differ in their degree of invasion susceptibility by R. rugosa, the positive influence of small-scale disturbance suggests microhabitat limitation in some dune habitats as well. Dune management should aim to reduce seed production and dispersal of R. rugosa in near-natural sites, and anthropogenic changes of habitat dynamics should be prevented.  相似文献

I investigated the effects of successional stage and micro‐elevation on seedling establishment of Calophyllum brasiliense (Clusiaceae), a common canopy tree of seasonally flooded lowland forest along the Manú River meander zone in southeastern Peru. To compare seedling establishment between microhabitat types, I planted C. brasiliense seeds in a fully crossed experimental design of three successional stages (early, mid, and mature) and two micro‐elevations (levees and backwaters). Seedling establishment success in this study was affected by both successional stage and micro‐elevation, but micro‐elevation was most important in mid‐successional habitats. In general, seedlings in early succession experienced better conditions than in mature forest; light levels were higher, herbivory lower, and seedling growth higher. In mid‐successional forest, micro‐elevation determined habitat quality; backwaters had higher light levels, lower herbivory, and higher seedling growth and survival than levees. Mid‐successional backwaters were similar in quality to early successional forest for seedling establishment, while levees in that same successional stage were the poorest microhabitats for establishment. Although mid‐successional backwaters are similar to early succession for seedling establishment, in the long run, seedlings that establish in mid‐succession have a lower chance of reaching reproductive size before their habitat ages to mature forest than members of their cohort that established in early succession. I hypothesize that successful recruitment for C. brasiliense in the Manú River meander system requires dispersal to early successional habitat.  相似文献

Mangroves will either face longer tidal inundation or retreat landwards in response to on-going accelerated sea level rise. However, little is known about the growth, regeneration or colonization of mangrove seedlings under the different tidal inundation regimes associated with accelerated sea level rise. In the present study, a field survey and a greenhouse mesocosm experiment were conducted to evaluate possible effects of accelerated sea level rise on colonization, establishment and seedling growth of a mangrove pioneer species, Avicennia marina. Avicennia populations at different elevations of the intertidal zone on Xiamen Island in Fujian Province, China showed distinctive patterns in both seedling density and plant age. The seedlings at lower elevations had less annual biomass accumulation and population productivity, but higher shoot to root ratios, suggesting that elevation has positive effects on seedling growth. The greenhouse mesocosm experiment with 1-year-old A. marina seedlings utilized five inundation periods (0, 2, 4, 6 and 12 h in a semidiurnal tidal cycle) and two inundation depths (root immersion and canopy immersion). Both inundation period and depth exerted significant and negative effects on biomass accumulation, photosynthetic rate, leaf electron transportation and water use efficiency. However, the negative effects of canopy immersion were more profound than root immersion. Canopy immersion exacerbated the effects of prolonged inundation, with no seedlings surviving under canopy immersion at the 12-hour treatment. These results suggest that at lower elevations with higher sea level, canopy immersion will have greater negative effects on seedling colonization, establishment and early growth of A. marina. This finding is instrumental in predicting the future dynamics of mangrove forests under increasing sea levels.  相似文献

Meiobenthic studies were performed in an intertidal area in the Be River estuary (Nha Trang Bay, Vietnam). The study area is an area of riverine-type mangroves that have been heavily damaged by human impacts, including timber cutting and waste. Three biotopes are situated in the middle intertidal zone: a fringe of Rhizophora stylosa, a bush area composed of Avicennia aff. alba behind it, and muddy sand with fiddler crabs (Uca spp.), which is free of mangrove plants. Three replicate samples of meiobenthos were collected in each biotope and each sample was subdivided into two layers: 0–1 and 1–4 cm. The abundance of metazoan meiobenthos varied from 735 specimens/10 cm2 in the Uca spp. biotope to 244 specimens/10 cm2 beneath the Rhizophora trees. Six taxonomic groups of high rank were found among the meiofauna: Nematoda, Copepoda (Harpacticoida), Oligochaeta, Turbellaria, Kinorhyncha, and Foraminifera (Allogromiida). The spatial variability of meiobenthos and its key taxa was estimated and the spatial distribution patterns of free-living nematode species were described. About 90% of the total meiobenthos inhabited the upper 0–1 cm of the sediments. Nematodes constituted 90–95% of all meiobenthic organisms in the samples. A total of 48 species of free-living nematodes were found in the investigated mangrove intertidal area. In terms of species composition and set of dominants, the nematode community is comprised of three local assemblages: one of them inhabits the uppermost centimeter in the Uca and Avicennia biocenoses; the second assemblage occupies the upper sediment layer in the Rhizophora stand; a less abundant but specific assemblage of several nematode species occurs in the subsurface sediments at all three sites.  相似文献

We used experimental transplant studies to understand how dispersal and habitat-specific selection interact to influence plant populations occupying heterogeneous environments. The snow buttercup (Ranunculus adoneus) occupies a steep ecological and flowering time gradient caused by persistent snowmelt differences within its snow bed habitat. We transplanted seeds, seedlings, and adults to learn about the potential interactions between dispersal and selection. We found that adaptive differentiation is not occurring along the snowmelt gradient, despite striking differences in microhabitat conditions and reproductive phenology between early- and latemelting sites. Instead, our results imply that environmentally based differences in seed quality are contributing to directional gene flow from early-melting locations toward latemelting locations. Emergence and early survival of seedlings is greater in late-melting sites in some years, but the larger seeds produced by maternal plants in early-melting locations consistently have a fitness advantage in all parts of the snow bed. Larger seeds survive longer in the soil and have a second peak of seedling emergence in their third year, but these late-emerging seedlings are successful only if dispersed to less vegetated, late-melting destinations. The longer growing season in earlymelting sites enhances vegetative growth at all life-history stages and increases fecundity of seedling transplants but also limits the opportunity for establishment from seed. Our demographic analysis suggests that maternal environmental effects on propagule quality can lead to directional gene flow from benign to marginal sites in populations occupying heterogeneous habitats.  相似文献

Restoring Caribbean Dry Forests: Evaluation of Tree Propagation Techniques   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Survival and height growth of tree seedlings and rooted cuttings introduced into artificially shaded and unshaded plots in a degraded dry forest were measured at intervals for nine months. Ten tree species were selected to represent a range of ecological characteristics of the dry–forest plant community on St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands. Of three propagule types – seeds, seedlings, and rooted cuttings – introduced to field plots, seedlings survived best (52%) over the initial nine-month period. Cuttings of six species rooted successfully in a shadehouse, but only two of these species survived the nine–month field experiment. Seed germination was low, under 11% for eight of ten species tested, and four species did not germinate. Subsequent mortality of seedling recruits was moderately high. Plumeria alba was the only species for which seedling height growth was not significantly greater than cutting height growth. Shading treatment (25% of full sun) significantly increased seedling survivorship (p= 0.03) but suppressed growth slightly for some species. Shading enhanced survival of seedlings produced from broadcast seeds, but not seed germination. Mortality occurred during dry periods, apparently from drought stress. Results suggest (1) that seedling introductions are the preferred propagule type (over seeding or rooted cuttings) for ecological restoration of degraded tropical dry forests, and (2) that some level of shading is required to increase the survivorship of many dry-forest species or to avert complete mortality of some species. This study suggests that early secondary dry forest may be best restored by underplanting within the existing vegetation. Sufficient shading suitable for growth of native dry-forest trees may be attained using a nurse crop of fast-growing leguminous trees.  相似文献

The mangrove around Sungei Pemburongunan, just west of Tanjong Batu and Istana Darul Aman in the Brunei-Muara District, is unique in that it contains the only pure stand of Avicennia marina in Brunei Darussalam. In mid-October, 1990 the mouth of Sungei Pemburongunan was closed due to a natural build-up of a sandbar across it. The mangrove quickly became flooded and adverse effects on the flora and fauna were observed during the following weeks. In mid-December a channel was dug across the sand bar to reduce the flooding and normalise the ecology. Some of the dying Avicennia and Lumnitzera have since recovered but others such as Acrostichum and Casuarina have not. Avicennia showed some interesting responses to prolonged inundation. Many of the Avicennia that had flowered during the flood produced seedlings which are now well rooted and 40–80 cm in height. The survival of large numbers of these seedlings is attributed to the floor-related decrease in the number of grapsid and sesarmid crabs which predate on them. The crab and mollusc populations have largely recovered. Unlike periodic short-term flooding which does not seem to have any apparent adverse affect on the ecosystem, prolonged inundation can result in the loss of the Avicennia and its associated flora and fauna. Thus, fragile mangrove ecosystems such as this need to be monitored and managed closely. This work demonstrates that contrary to conventional wisdom, human intervention and management can be beneficial to more fragile ecosystems, which could otherwise succumb to natural processes. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of the dynamic nature of the environment which should be considered in management and conservation programmes.  相似文献

We compared seedling growth of four Artemisia species dominated at different habitats to determine whether interspecific seedling growth variation of a same genus in tolerance to burial can be used to explain plant distribution in the sand dune field. Interdune lowland species, Artemisia gmelinii, stabilized dune species, A. frigida, semi-stabilized dune species, A. halodendron, and active dune species, A. wudanica were selected. Seedlings grown for 3 weeks were treated at five burial depths for three burial times in pot experiments. Species from the habitats with little burial had smaller survival rate, dry weight and stem elongation speed than those from the habitats with intensive burial when buried. Furthermore, when buried, the former tended to adjust biomass allocation between shoot and root and produce adventitious buds, while the latter tended to maintain a constant root:shoot ratio and produce adventitious roots. We conclude that (1) seedlings of species with a long evolutionary history of exposure to sand burial (from the active sand dune), show quicker stem growth when buried than do seedlings of species from the habitats with little or no sand burial; (2) seedlings of species which do not change root:shoot ratio might be more tolerant of sand burial than those do; (3) seedlings of species from the habitats with intensive sand burial is prone to produce adventitious roots and seedlings of species from the habitats with little or no sand burial tend to produce adventitious buds when buried.  相似文献

Experiments have promise in determining mechanisms by which communities resist invasion. Growth and survivorship of transplanted seedlings of introduced tree species (Leucaena leucocephala, Muntingia calabura, Adenanthera pavonia, and Clausena excavata) were used to assess abiotic (light regime) and biotic resistance (herbivory) to invasion of rainforest on Christmas Island (Indian Ocean). At four sites, seedlings were transplanted into the forest edge along roadside verges and into adjacent intact forest; half were caged to prevent access by the dominant seedling consumer, the red land crab (Gecarcoidea natalis). Red crab densities did not differ between roadside and forest plots. Red crabs initially reduced survivorship of Leucaena in both edge and interior plots but virtually all seedlings in the forest interior were dead after 41 weeks. Survivorship of Muntingia was also initially reduced by crabs in the forest edge, but again, all but one seedling died by the end of the experiment. Seedlings of Adenanthera and Clausena fared much better overall, surviving well in both locations. Red crabs had no overall effect on Adenanthera survival but significantly reduced survival of Clausena in forest plots. For both species, seedling performance was greater in the forest edge than in the forest interior. Red crabs had no effect on height increment for either species; however, for Clausena, red crabs reduced seedling mass in the forest interior. Both Adenanthera and Clausena were able to persist in the intact forest. Clausena is now actively invading intact rainforest, but Adenanthera appears dispersal-limited. Resistance factors in intact forest appear hierarchical: biotic resistance afforded by land crabs can impede establishment of some plant invaders but seedling responses to abiotic factors (e.g., the light regime) largely overwhelm its effect. Together, these two community attributes are likely to restrict the range of plant invaders to a small suite of species that can successfully establish in intact rainforest on the island. However, increased propagule pressure from a variety of shade-tolerant species and further declines in the abundance of the dominant seedling consumer may lead to increasing invasion success in this island rainforest. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献
