The vertical distribution of dioxins in a sediment core was investigated to elucidate historical trends of dioxins discharged into Sendai Bay, Japan. The dioxin concentration was 410 pg/g dry weight (dw) in sediments deposited in the mid-1930s and 3870 pg/g dw in those deposited in the mid-1980s. Dioxin fluxes increased from the mid-1930s and then reached a maximum in the mid-1980s. 1,3,6,8-TeCDD+1,3,7,9-TeCDD, OCDD, and Co-PCB concentrations were 110, 140, and 26 pg/g dw, respectively, in mid-1930s sediments, and reached maximums of 1800, 1100, and 200 pg/g dw, respectively, in mid-1980s sediments. Shipments to Miyagi Prefecture of CNP and PCP products, the major sources of 1,3,6,8-TeCDD+1,3,7,9-TeCDD and OCDD, were highest in 1975 (4700t) and 1970 (3100t), respectively; and in Japan, the amount of PCBs, the major source of Co-PCB congeners, used was highest (11,100t) in 1970. Thus, the period for which the maximum concentrations of 1,3,6,8+1,3,7,9-TeCDD, OCDD, and Co-PCBs were measured in the sediment core (mid-1980s) did not correspond to the time of maximum use of CNP, PCP, or PCB products, but lagged behind by more than 10 years. We attributed this time lag to the time required for the movement of dioxins from Miyagi Prefecture to Sendai Bay.  相似文献

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in two (210)Pb dated sediment cores from the coastal East China Sea, strongly influenced by the discharge from the Yangtze River, were determined to help to reconstruct the economic development over the past century in East China. The variations in PAH concentrations and fluxes in the sediment cores were primarily due to energy structure change, severe floods and dam construction activities. The impact on PAHs by the river discharge overwhelmed the atmospheric depositions. The profiles of PAH fluxes and concentrations as well as compositions in the cores revealed the transformation from an agricultural economy to an industrial one especially after the 1990s' in the region. PAHs in the study area were dominated by pyrolytic sources.  相似文献

Two annually laminated cores collected from Lake DV09 on Devon Island in May 1999 were dated using 210Pb and 137Cs, and analyzed for a variety of halogenated organic contaminants (HOCs), including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides, short-chain polychlorinated n-alkanes (sPCAs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). Dry weight HOC concentrations in Lake DV09 sediments were generally similar to other remote Arctic lakes. Maximum HOC fluxes often agreed well with production maxima, although many compound groups exhibited maxima at or near the sediment surface, much later than peak production. The lower than expected HOC concentrations in older sediment slices may be due to anaerobic degradation and possibly to dilution resulting from a temporary increase in sedimentation rate observed between the mid-1960s and 1970s. Indeed, temporal trends were more readily apparent for those compound classes when anaerobic metabolites were also analyzed, such as for DDT and toxaphene. However, it is postulated here for the first time that the maximum or increasing HOC surface fluxes observed for many of the major compound classes in DV09 sediments may be influenced by climate variation and the resulting increase in algal primary productivity which could drive an increasing rate of HOC scavenging from the water column. Both the fraction (F(TC)) and enantiomer fraction (EF) of trans-chlordane (TC) decreased significantly between 1957 and 1997, suggesting that recent inputs to the lake are from weathered chlordane sources. PCDD/Fs showed a change in sources from pentachlorophenol (PeCP) in the 1950s and 1960s to combustion sources into the 1990s. Improvements in combustion technology may be responsible for the reducing the proportion of TCDF relative to OCDD in the most recent slice.  相似文献

This paper examines how fluxes in the aquatic environment reflect the reduced use of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) in Stockholm, Sweden, between 1975 and 1995. The sediment deposition of Cd and Pb in the waters around Stockholm was investigated using laminated sediment cores, which facilitated reconstructions of historical annual metal deposition to the sediments. The resulting reconstructions were compared to independent estimations of the emissions to the aquatic environment during the phase-out period. The loads of Cd and Pb from sewage treatment plants, storm water and in atmospheric deposition were studied using literature data. The data set indicates a reduced load of Cd and Pb on the aquatic surroundings of Stockholm. The reduction is, however, not as pronounced in the sediment deposition as in the calculated emissions. This indicates that emissions may be delayed on their way to the sediments or that there are other sources, e.g. resuspension of older sediments. It is therefore argued that sediment investigations are an essential component in environmental monitoring, in order to get a complete picture of the metal fluxes to and in the environment in urban areas.  相似文献

Distribution of mercury in six lake sediment cores across the UK   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Six sediment cores, from Lochnagar, Loch Chon and Loch Grannoch in Scotland, Burnmoor Tarn in the English Lake District, Llyn Llagi in the Snowdonia region of Wales and Banbury Reservoir in London, were taken in order to study the distribution of Hg temporally and historically in lake sediments across the UK. These cores were dated using the spheroidal carbonaceous particle technique. The cores show that all sites across the UK have been contaminated by Hg. There is a rapid increase in Hg concentration during the last approximately 200 years at all rural sites. In the 95 year record from Banbury Reservoir in London the sediments show high Hg concentrations (380-840 ngg(-1)) throughout. Inter-site differences in Hg concentrations and profiles may be explained by impacts of afforestation, composition of the sediments and the provenance of the Hg including catchment in-wash influences. For example, catchment contributions result in a sharp peak (1606 ngg(-1)) in the Hg concentration profile in the core taken from Loch Chon in the Trossachs region of Scotland. Mercury fluxes were calculated for the sediment cores and show that over the last few decades these UK sites, except Lochnagar, would fall into the upper range for European rural areas.  相似文献

The extensive use of fertilizers on farmlands during the past several decades in China has led to a rapid deterioration of environmental water quality in recent years. An agricultural watershed with high-yield grain production and characterized by multipond systems in the Yangtze-Huaihe region of China was selected to establish the historic records of heavy metal pollution by (137)Cs-dated sediment cores. The experimental results indicated that the contents of most of the heavy metals investigated, such as Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn, continuously increased in the multipond sediments throughout the past three decades. An inflection point appeared in the 1980s, prior to which all heavy metal contents showed little or no increase with time. Thereafter, the heavy metal contents increased dramatically due to the extensive application of phosphate fertilizers. The mean Cd content in 1980 was 0.13 microg/g which increased rapidly to 0.33 microg/g in 2004, but prior to 1980, the level was only 0.08 microg/g. Similar trends were also found for other heavy metals. The enrichment factor (EF) values indicated that Cd was not only the most anthropogenic metal in the multipond sediments but also aggravated anthropogenic impacts on the watershed environment during the past two decades. The high proportion of chemical reactive forms of Cd (10%-30%) implied a moderately high ecological risk. Our results clearly reveal that the extensive use of fertilizers has resulted in significant heavy metal pollution in this watershed, which threatens the water quality of the watershed and downstream water bodies.  相似文献

The copper-zinc smelter at Flin Flon, Manitoba, was historically the largest single Hg point-source in Canada, as well as a major source of Zn. Although emissions were reported by industry to have declined significantly since the late 1980s, these reductions have never been independently verified. Here, the histories of Hg and Zn deposition over the past century or more were determined at five lake sediment and three peat study sites in the surrounding region. At sites spanning the range from heavy to minor pollution, lake sediment Hg and Zn concentration and flux profiles increased significantly in the early 1930s after the smelter opened. Two of the three peat archives were wholly or partially compromised by either physical disturbances or biogeochemical transitions which reduced their effectiveness as atmospheric metal deposition recorders. But the remaining peat records, including a detailed recent 20 yr record at a moderately polluted site, appeared to show that substantive reductions in metal levels had occurred after the late 1980s, coincident with the reported emission reductions. However, the lake sediment results, taken at face value, contradicted the peat results in that no major declines in metal concentrations or fluxes occurred over recent decades. Mercury and Zn fluxes have in fact increased substantially since 1988 in most lakes. We suggest that this discrepancy may be explained by catchment soil saturation by historically deposited metals which are now mobilizing and leaching into lakes, as has been reported from other smelter polluted systems in Canada, whereas the upper sections of the peat cores reflected recent declines in atmospheric deposition. However, further research including instrumented wet and dry deposition measurements and catchment/lake mass balance studies is recommended to test this hypothesis, and to provide definitive data on current atmospheric metal deposition rates in the area.  相似文献

This work presents quality control results on the mercury concentrations in different environmental (river sediments, forest soils, river suspended matter and fish) and human samples from the lower Madeira River, Amazon sampled between 2001 and 2003, about 15-20 years after the nearly cessation of gold mining activities in the region, which reached its peak in the late 1980s. The study aimed to compare mercury concentrations in these environmental samples with those reported by other authors during the gold rush of the Madeira River Basin. Today, in the Madeira River the releases of mercury register a sudden reduction due the gold price fall in the international trade. However, about 100 t of Hg were released to the atmosphere and to aquatic systems in the region during the gold rush. The present survey shows that notwithstanding the reduction of Hg emissions to the Madeira River Basin from gold mining proper, concentrations in fish and humans are similar to those measured during the gold rush. Reduction in Hg concentrations is restricted to areas close to old point sources and only for abiotic compartments (air and sediments). Remobilization of Hg from bottom sediments plus re-emission from soils due to land use changes are probably responsible for keeping high Hg concentrations in biological samples.  相似文献

A major timber-preservative spillage, resulting from a fire at a timber yard, released substantial quantities of tributyltin and lindane (g hexachlorocyclohexane) into the River Bourne - a tributary of the River Thames. This paper describes the chemical and biological effects resulting from the incident. Water-column concentrations in the River Bourne South ranged from below detection limits to 5200 μg/l and 3700 μg/l for tributyltin and lindane respectively, with contamination extending 80 km into the Thames estuary. The high concentration of pollutants caused extensive fish mortality and virtually eradicated the invertebrate population in the immediate vicinity of the spill. Although sediment monitoring revealed initially high surficial sediment concentrations of tributyltin (3300 ng/g) and lindane (490 ng/g), loadings declined over a period of time, but it is perceived that contaminated sediments may pose a longer-term threat to benthic communities, particularly in the proximity of the spill site.  相似文献

PCBs and other persistent organochlorine (OC) pesticides were analyzed in sediment cores collected from six lakes in Yukon Territory and one in northern British Columbia, Canada, with the objective of establishing sources and historical trends of these contaminants. DDT was found to be the most prominent OC in the sediment profiles of most of the lakes. Maximum sigmaDDT levels (3.47-2680 ng g(-1) dw) were observed in sediment slices dated to the 1950s from lakes near populated areas. In contrast, in more remote lakes (Hanson, Kusawa and Lindeman), the maximum sigmaDDT concentrations were observed in the sediments dated to the 1970s. Highest sigmaPCB and sigmaDDT concentrations were measured in sediments from Watson Lake, near a suspected PCB waste disposal site and in a region where DDT was heavily applied in the 1950s and 1960s. Elevated sigmaPCB concentrations [16.1-93.6 ng g(-1) dry weight (dw)] were also observed in sediments from lakes situated near populated areas, relative to Kusawa and Lindeman (11.1 and 12.7 ng g(-1) dw, respectively). Recent sigmaPCB fluxes ranged from 621 ng m(-2) y(-1) in Kusawa Lake to 16400 ng m(-2) y(-1) in Little Atlin Lake. The extremely high sedimentation rate (2050 g m(-2) y(-1)) in glacial fed Lindeman Lake gave rise to elevated fluxes of sigmaPCB (2410 ng m(-2) y(-1)) and other OCs, despite much lower concentrations in the sediment. Levels of hexachlorocyclohexanes (sigmaHCH), chlordane-related compounds (sigmaCHL), and chlorobenzenes (sigmaCBz) were in the low ng g(-1) (dw) range in all lake sediments, similar to concentrations previously reported for Arctic lakes in Canada, indicating that their major source was long range atmospheric transport. Contamination of the lakes with PCBs and DDT near populated areas of the Yukon Territory appears to be a result of regional activities rather than long range transport and deposition. The results also point to glacial runoff as a significant source of OCs to small, high elevation lakes (Lindeman), but not to larger lakes within the Yukon River drainage basin that are also affected by glacial sources (Kusawa, Laberge).  相似文献

Runoff from agricultural watersheds can carry a number of agricultural pollutants and pathogens; often associated with the sediment fraction. Deposition of this sediment can impact water quality and the ecology of the river, and the re-suspension of such sediment can become sources of contamination for reaches downstream. In this paper a modelling framework to predict sediment and associated microbial erosion, transport and deposition is proposed for the South Nation River, Ontario, Canada. The modelling framework is based on empirical relationships (deposition and re-suspension fluxes), derived from laboratory experiments in a rotating circular flume using sediment collected from the river bed. The bed shear stress governing the deposition and re-suspension processes in the stream was predicted using a one dimensional mobile boundary flow model called MOBED. Counts of live bacteria associated with the suspended and bed sediments were used in conjunction with measured suspended sediment concentration at an upstream section to allow for the estimation of sediment associated microbial erosion, transport and deposition within the modelled river reach. Results suggest that the South Nation River is dominated by deposition periods with erosion only occurring at flows above approximately 250 m3 s−1 (above this threshold, all sediment (suspended and eroded) with associated bacteria are transported through the modelled reach). As microbes are often associated with sediments, and can survive for extended periods of time, the river bed is shown to be a possible source of pathogenic organisms for erosion and transport downstream during large storm events. It is clear that, shear levels, bacteria concentrations and suspended sediment are interrelated requiring that these parameters be studied together in order to understand aquatic microbial dynamics. It is important that any management strategies and operational assessments for the protection of human and aquatic health incorporate the sediment compartments (suspended and bed sediment) and the energy dynamics within the system in order to better predict the concentration of indicator organism.  相似文献

Sediments record the history of contamination to estuaries. Analysis of the concentrations of toxic organic compounds, contaminant and crustal metals, organic carbon content and isotopic composition in sediment cores from two estuarine systems in Buzzards Bay allowed reconstruction of human impacts over 350 years. Vertical distributions of the contaminants correlate with changes in the nature of watershed/estuarine activities. All contaminants were highly enriched (tens to hundreds times background) in modern New Bedford Harbor sediments. Enrichment began around the turn of the 20th century for all but PCBs, which were first synthesized in the 1930s. An increase in organic carbon content and a shift of carbon isotopes toward a more terrestrial signature illustrates increasing anthropogenic impact in New Bedford as population grew along with the industrial base. Institution of environmental protection measures in the late 20th century was reflected in decreased, although still substantially elevated, concentrations of contaminants. A lack of industrial development in Apponagansett Bay resulted in much lower concentrations of the same indicators, although specific contaminants related to the early whaling industry increased significantly above background as early as the late 18th century. The similarity of indicators in older portions of cores from NBH and unimpacted Apponagansett Bay demonstrates that cores can be used to establish reference conditions as successfully as using separate sites judged a priori to represent the reference state. The historical reconstruction approach provides the basis for establishing relationships between environmental stressors and factors that drive the stressors, as well as a framework for the assessment of ecological response(s) to environmental stressors over a range of time and/or exposure scales.  相似文献

Natural and anthropogenic inputs of hydrocarbons to the Strait of Georgia   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Sediment cores from the Fraser estuary, Vancouver Harbour and Strait of Georgia, suspended sediment samples from the Fraser River and sediment grabs from Vancouver Harbour have been analyzed for alkanes and parent and alkyl PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons). Principal components analysis (PCA) clearly distinguishes mixed sources by separating parent PAHs according to molecular size, and separating alkyl substituted PAHs from higher plant PAHs. We find the Fraser River to be the predominant source for natural and anthropogenic hydrocarbons to the Strait of Georgia. The natural hydrocarbon burden from the Fraser River is augmented principally by petroleum hydrocarbons and combustion PAHs from Vancouver. Contaminated sediments from Vancouver Harbour very likely have also been transported to a major ocean disposal site off the Fraser estuary. Petroleum alkanes, which dominate Fraser River suspended sediment samples, are lost by processes such as dissolution or microbial degradation during transport and sedimentation, while PAHs from the river are delivered essentially unchanged to sediments in the strait. Hydrocarbon composition undergoes little change with depth at a reference location in the Strait of Georgia, indicating that PAH inputs have changed very little since the early part of this century. In Vancouver Harbour the low rate of sediment accumulation coupled with surface mixing has led to the retention of contaminant PAHs within the surface mixed layer, while the rapid delivery of sediments from the Fraser River has buried contaminant PAHs from historical ocean disposal in the Strait of Georgia.  相似文献

Mary Lake, St. George Lake, and Philips Lake are located in the Greater Toronto Area, Ontario, Canada. These lakes are relatively small and have no direct inflow and outflow channels. Mercury (Hg) input to the lakes comes mainly from atmospheric deposition. Sediment cores from the points of the maximum lake depth and surface sediment samples from the points of maximum lake depth to the bank of each lake were collected in October 2005. Total and methyl mercury concentrations in the pore water and sediments of these samples were determined. In these small lakes with high organic content, there was no correlation between organic content and total mercury (THg) in the samples throughout the entire sediment cores while strong positive correlation between these two parameters was observed in all the surface sediments. Compared with typical methylmercury (MeHg) depth-profiles of sediment cores in other studies, where MeHg concentrations and methylation rates decreased sharply with increasing depth, MeHg distributions in the sediment cores in this study showed that MeHg might have been produced not only in the upper sediment but also in the deeper sediments, which resulted in a larger MeHg reservoir in the sediment. Organic matter, to some extent, affected MeHg distributions in the samples throughout the entire sediment cores. Concentrations of MeHg in all the surface sediments, however, were not controlled by organic matter, whereas they were largely a function of water column depths. Total mercury concentrations in pore water were relatively homogenous in both the sediment cores and surface sediment while MeHg in pore water generally deceased with increasing depth in the sediment cores and increasing distance from the centre of the lakes in surface sediments. Methylmercury contributed 1% to 76% of THg in the pore water samples. Concentrations and distributions of MeHg in overlying water and sediment-surface water in Mary Lake and St. George Lake suggested that both in situ production of MeHg in lake water and the release of MeHg from sediment contributed to high MeHg in deep anoxic water.  相似文献

改革开放后,中国区域发展经历了前所未有的转型,彻底重构了区域空间模式。在市场化、全球化与城市化三重因素影响下,传统生产基地和经济增长点不再是一枝独秀的区域中心,出现了以多中心为主的都市绵延区或多中心城市群。大珠江三角洲地区正是区域空间转型的典型案例。本文通过分析港珠关系的历史地理,揭示了港珠在区域发展中角色转变的三个时期,并从经济关系、跨境资本流动、跨境贸易.跨境人流四个方面进一步阐述港珠空间关系的发展。自1970年代后期,港珠关系经历了质变。短短20几年,珠三角不仅已经取代香港成为亚洲的世界制造业基地,也迅速发展成地区服务中心与生产资料和消费品市场。珠三角的崛起将港珠关系重新定位。本文的主要论点是,港珠关系的这种变化不能简单理解为政治或政策因素,而是深深植根于大珠三角区域经济发展之中。  相似文献

Occurrence of phthalates and bisphenol A and F in the environment   总被引:51,自引:0,他引:51  
Certain xenoestrogens, namely bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol F (BPF), butylbenzyl phthalate (BBP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), and di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP), were measured in various compartments (surface water, sediments, sewage treatment plant effluents, sewage sludge, dump water, liquid manure) in order to contribute to a better understanding of exposure to these compounds in different environments. Hundred and sixteen surface-water samples and 35 sediments from rivers, lakes and channels, 39 sewage effluents, and 38 sewage sludges were collected in Germany. Furthermore, ten liquid manure, two waste-dump and two compost-runoff water samples were also analysed. BPA measurements showed low concentrations from 0.0005 to 0.41 microg L(-1) in surface water, in sewage effluents from 0.018 to 0.702 microg L(-1), in sediments from 0.01 to 0.19 mgkg(-1) and in sewage sludge from 0.004 to 1.363mgkg(-1) dw. Measured concentrations of BPF were clearly lower than BPA in all environmental media. DEHP dominated the phthalate concentrations, which ranged from 0.33 to 97.8 microg L(-1) (surface water), 1.74 to 182 microg L(-1) (sewage effluents), 27.9 to 154 mgkg(-1) dw (sewage sludge) and 0.21 to 8.44 mgkg(-1) (sediment). DBP was found only in minor concentrations and BBP, only in a few samples in low amounts. Very high concentrations of BPA and phthalates were confirmed in waste dump water and compost water samples as well as in the liquid manure samples.  相似文献

A scoping study was conducted to investigate the residues of nineteen pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), including 4 natural and 3 synthetic steroid estrogens, 7 endocrine-disrupting phenols, and 5 acid pharmaceuticals in three urban streams and the Major Pearl River at Guangzhou, a megapolis in the Pearl River Delta, South China. Estrone was detected in >60% water samples with a maximum concentration of 65 ng L(-1). Endocrine-disrupting phenols (nonylphenol, bisphenol A, triclosan, 2-phenylphenol, methyparaben, and propylparaben) were found to be widely present at rather high concentrations in the urban riverine water of Guangzhou. Salicylic acid, clofibric acid and ibuprofen were detected in most water samples with maximum concentrations of 2098, 248 and 1417 ng L(-1) respectively, whereas naproxen was less frequently detected and also at lower concentration. Both the detection frequencies and median concentrations of the PPCPs appeared higher during the low-flow season than during the high-flow season. The seasonal difference in PPCPs occurrence was probably attributed to the dilution effect caused by the rainfall. PPCPs in the urban riverine water of Guangzhou originated mainly from random discharge and/or leakage of municipal wastewater. PPCPs contamination in the Major Pearl River may be of a potential environmental issue, especially during the low-flow season.  相似文献

Sediment cores from a hydrothermal vent zone off Milos Island in the Aegean Sea were dated using the 210Pb method. The average unsupported 210Pb inventory in the cores was calculated to be 3256 Bq m(-2). The corresponding mean annual 210Pb flux of 105 Bq m(-2) year(-1) is comparable to estimates of the atmospheric flux given in the literature. 210Pb fluxes calculated from the unsupported 210Pb inventories in cores are also comparable with the 210Pb vertical fluxes determined from settling particles off the coast of Milos Island. The highest unsupported 210Pb concentrations (89 Bq kg(-1)) were measured in the sediments nearest to the hydrothermal vent area suggesting that the sedimentation rate is lowest at this site. Direct gamma measurements of 210Pb were used to date three sediment cores that are located at different distances from the vent zone: one is in the immediate vicinity of the vent; and others are outside the zone. Sedimentation rates for these cores, calculated using the CRS and CIC models, ranged from 0.088+/-0.008 cm year(-1) to 0.14+/-0.01 cm year(-1). Where both models were applicable, the results given by the two methods were in good agreement. 137Cs concentrations in all three cores generally declined with depth but showed no clear signal of either the period of maximum fallout from weapons testing or the Chernobyl accident. 210Po activities were also measured and the maximum 210Po concentration was in the sediment surface layer (166 Bq kg(-1)).  相似文献

为了探讨利用HAS土壤固化剂改性加固珠江河道疏浚淤泥的固化效果,进行了击实、无侧限抗压强度和抗渗等物理力学性能试验,通过对试验结果的分析,讨论了改性淤泥的压实性和抗压强度的变化规律。结果表明,HAS固化剂改性后,淤泥的压实和渗透性有很大的改善,同时淤泥的强度能得到较大的提高,建立了改性淤泥的强度与龄期、掺入比的关系式,可供实际工程参考。  相似文献
