pH‐ and temperature‐responsive interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) hydrogels based on soy protein and poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide‐co‐sodium acrylate) were successfully prepared. The structure and properties of the hydrogels were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analyzer. The equilibrium and dynamic swelling/deswelling behaviors and the drug release properties of the hydrogels responding to pH and/or temperature were also studied in detail. The hydrogels have the porous honeycomb structures, good miscibility and thermal stability, and good pH‐ and temperature‐responsivity. The volume phase transition temperature of the hydrogels is ca. 40°C. Changing the soy protein or crosslinker content could be used to control the swelling behavior and water retention, and the hydrogels have the fastest deswelling rate in pH 1.2 buffer solutions at 45°C. Bovine serum albumin release from the hydrogels has the good pH and temperature dependence. The results show that the proposed IPN hydrogels may have potential applications in the field of biomedical materials such as in drug delivery systems. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Three series of novel semi‐interpenetrating polymer networks, based on crosslinked poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide), PNIPA, and different amounts of the linear poly(N‐vinylpyrrolidone), PVP, were synthesized to improve the mechanical properties and thermal response of PNIPA gels. The effect of the incorporation of the linear PVP into the temperature responsive networks on the temperature‐induced transition, swelling/deswelling behavior, and mechanical properties was studied. Polymer networks with four different crosslinking densities were prepared with varying molar ratios (25/1 to 100/1) of the monomer (N‐isopropylacrylamide) to the crosslinker (N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide). The hydrogels were characterized by determination of the equilibrium degree of swelling, the dynamic shear modulus and the effective crosslinking density, as well as tensile strength and elongation at break. Furthermore, the deswelling kinetics of the hydrogels was studied by measuring their water retention capacity. The inclusion of the linear hydrophilic PVP in the PNIPA networks increased the equilibrium degree of swelling. The tensile strength of the semi‐interpenetrating networks (SIPNs) reinforced with linear PVP was higher than that of the PNIPA networks. The elongation at break of these SIPNs varied between 22% and 55%, which are 22 – 41% larger than those for pure PNIPA networks. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献

BACKGROUND: A considerable amount of research has been focused on smart hydrogels that can respond to external environmental stimuli, especially temperature and pH. In this study, fast responsive thermo‐ and pH‐sensitive poly[(N,N‐diethylacrylamide)‐co‐(acrylic acid)] hydrogels were prepared by free radical copolymerization in aqueous solution using poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) as a pore‐forming agent. RESULTS: Swelling studies showed that the hydrogels produced had both temperature and pH sensitivity. The deswelling kinetics at high temperature demonstrated that the shrinking rates were influenced by the addition of the pore‐forming agent and the amount of acrylic acid in the initial total monomers. The deswelling curves in low‐buffer solutions had two stages. Pulsatile swelling studies indicated that the PEG‐modified hydrogels were superior to the normal ones. These different swelling properties were further confirmed by the results of scanning electron microscopy. CONCLUSION: Such fast responsive thermo‐ and pH‐sensitive hydrogels are expected to be useful in biomedical fields for stimuli‐responsive drug delivery systems. A series of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA) hydrogels was prepared by free‐radical crosslinking copolymerization of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPA) and N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide (BAAm) in aqueous solutions of poly(ethylene glycol) of molecular weight 300 g/mol (PEG). The amount of PEG in the polymerization solvent, the crosslinker (BAAm) content, and the gel preparation temperature (Tprep) were varied in the gelation experiments. The hydrogels were characterized by the equilibrium swelling and elasticity tests as well as by the measurements of the deswelling–reswelling kinetics of the hydrogels in response to a temperature change between 25 and 48°C. The rate of deswelling of the swollen gel increases while the rate of reswelling of the collapsed gel decreases as the amount of PEG in the polymerization solvent is increased or as the crosslinker content is decreased. The Tprep effect on the swelling kinetics of the hydrogels was only observed if the PEG content of the polymerization solvent is less than 20%, which is explained with the screening of H‐bonding interactions in concentrated PEG solution. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two series of semiinterpenetrating networks (SIPN) based on linear hydrophilic poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and thermo‐responsive poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA), physically crosslinked with inorganic clay, are presented. The hydrogels with different crosslinking densities were prepared by varying the content of clay from 1 to 6 wt % and contained linear interpenetrant, PVA in the range of 0.5–1.5 wt %. The effect of clay content on swelling/deswelling behavior and phase transition in PNIPA gels, as well as the feasibility of reinforcing the gels with high molecular weight PVA, were analyzed. The thermal response of hydrogels, followed by DSC, confirmed that the insertion of hydrophilic PVA did not have a significant effect on the onset of the volume phase transition temperature, while the response was faster. The equilibrium degree of swelling of SIPNs and PNIPA hydrogels was in the range of 9–79 and decreased with increasing content of clay. The internal morphology and surface wettability of the hydrogels were investigated by scanning electron microscope analysis and contact angle measurements, respectively. The network structural parameters of the PNIPA and SIPN nanocomposites hydrogels, such as the average molecular weight between crosslinks, Mc, and effective crosslinking density, Ne, were determined by dynamic mechanical analysis. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. pH‐ and temperature‐responsive semi‐interpenetrating nanocomposite hydrogels (NC hydrogels) were prepared with surface‐functionalized graphene oxide (GO) as the crosslinker, N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) as the monomer, and chitosan (CS) as an additive. The effects of 3‐(trimethoxysilyl)propylmethacrylate‐modified GO sheets and CS content on various physical properties were investigated. Results show that PNIPAM/CS/GO hydrogels undergo a large volumetric change in response to temperature. Swelling ratios of PNIPAM/CS/GO hydrogels are much larger than those of the conventional organically crosslinked PNIPAM hydrogels. The deswelling test indicates that the deswelling rate was greatly enhanced by incorporating CS into the hydrogel network and using the surface‐functionalized GO as the crosslinker. The pH‐sensitivity of PNIPAM/CS/GO hydrogels is evident below their volume phase transition temperature. Moreover, the PNIPAM/CS/GO hydrogels have a much better mechanical property compared with traditional hydrogels even in a high water content of 90%. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Extraction or concentration with temperature‐sensitive hydrogels is a novel separation technology. In this study, N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPA) was synthesized by acrylonitrile and isopropanol. Poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA) and copolymer of NIPA and 2‐acrylamide‐2‐methylpropane sulfonate [P(NIPA‐co‐AMPS)] hydrogels were prepared by radiation polymerization. Dependence of their swelling behavior on temperature was studied. Effects of radiation dose on polymerization, feed composition on thermoresponse, electrolyte on relative swelling ratio, and swelling and deswelling kinetics were investigated. The experimental results showed that P(NIPA‐co‐AMPS) hydrogels with low content of AMPS/NIPA (1–5 %), prepared at a radiation dose‐rate of 1 kGy/h and total dose of 30–40 kGy, could enhance the swelling ratio of PNIPA hydrogels significantly and raise the phase‐transition temperatures. P(NIPA‐co‐AMPS) hydrogels produced under optimum conditions were used to concentrate aqueous bovine serum albumin (BSA, M = 69 000 g mol?1) solution. When aqueous BSA concentration was below 5 %, the separation efficiency was more than 80 % with low cost and low energy consumption. Copyright © 2005 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Macroporous poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA) hydrogels were synthesized by free‐radical crosslinking polymerization in aqueous solution from N‐isopropylacrylamide monomer and N,N‐methylenebis (acrylamide) crosslinker using poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) with three different number‐average molecular weights of 300, 600 and 1000 g mol?1 as the pore‐forming agent. The influence of the molecular weight and amount of PEG pore‐forming agent on the swelling ratio and network parameters such as polymer–solvent interaction parameter (χ) and crosslinking density (νE) of the hydrogels is reported and discussed. Scanning electron micrographs reveal that the macroporous network structure of the hydrogels can be adjusted by applying different molecular weights and compositions of PEG during polymerization. At a temperature below the volume phase transition temperature, the macroporous hydrogels absorbed larger amounts of water compared to that of conventional PNIPA hydrogels, and showed higher equilibrated swelling ratios in aqueous medium. Particularly, the unique macroporous structure provides numerous water channels for water diffusion in or out of the matrix and, therefore, an improved response rate to external temperature changes during the swelling and deswelling process. These macroporous PNIPA hydrogels may be useful for potential applications in controlled release of macromolecular active agents. Copyright © 2006 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

A new kind of pH and temperature responsive poly(acrylamide‐co‐itaconic acid) hydrogel was prepared by free radical polymerization using ammonium persulfate as initiator and different comonomer ratios. The hydrogels were characterized in terms of chemical composition, swelling‐deswelling behavior, morphology, crystallographic behavior, and drug release properties. All the hydrogels showed high swelling ability in aqueous solutions, the maximum being at pH 7. Swelling decreased on either side of pH 7 (i.e., both in acidic and alkaline region) and increased with increase in temperature. The hydrogel with 10 mol% itaconic acid (IA) absorbed maximum water among the copolymer gels. The cellular structures of the hydrogels were clearly revealed by microscopic analysis and SEM pictures. Swelling of the gels in water followed non‐Fickian type of diffusion principle. The hydrogel was proved to be a controlled release vehicle, for example in drug delivery by using its smart properties. The hydrogel with 10 mol% IA also absorbed maximum amount of drug (ascorbic acid) under study. Incorporation of drug in hydrogel matrix was established from XRD peak analysis. POLYM. ENG. Two series of nanoclay reinforced, thermoresponsive hydrogels were prepared, one based on poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA) and the other on semi‐interpenetrating networks containing PNIPA and poly(N‐vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP), designated as SIPNs. The gels were crosslinked with 1, 3, and 5 wt % inorganic clay (hectorite) and SIPN gels additionally contained 1 wt % of PVP. The hydrogels were tested in the “as‐prepared state,” i.e., at 10 wt % PNIPA concentration in water and at equilibrium (maximum) swelling. Increasing the concentration of nanoclays increases crosslink density, modulus, tensile strength, elongation (except in equilibrium swollen gels), hysteresis and with decreases in the degree of swelling, broadening of the phase transition region, and a decrease in elastic recovery at high deformations. The presence of linear PVP in the networks increases porosity and the pore size, increases swelling, deswelling rates, and hysteresis, but decreases slightly lower critical solution temperature (LCST), tensile strength, elongation, and elastic recovery. The strongest hydrogels were ones with 10 wt % PNIPA and 5 wt % of nanoclays, displaying tensile strengths of 85 kPa and elongation of 955%. All properties of hydrogels at the equilibrium swollen state are lower than in the as‐prepared state, due to the lower concentration of chains per unit volume, but the trends are preserved. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel pH‐ and temperature‐dual responsive hydrogel was synthesized by inverse microemulsion polymerization, using itonic acid (IA) as pH‐responsive monomer, N‐isopropylacrylamide (NPAM) as thermo‐responsive monomer and acrylamide (AM) as the nonionic hydrophilic monomer. Factors affecting water and salt absorption, as well as swellability of the dual responsive hydrogels, such as IA/NPAM mass ratio and crosslinker amount, were investigated. pH‐ and temperature‐sensitivity and dynamic viscoelasticity behaviors of the dual responsive hydrogels were also studied. The dual responsive responsive hydrogels showed suitable water and salt absorbency, remarkable pH‐, and temperature‐sensitivity, adjustable swellability and enhanced viscoelastic behaviors under high stress. Water absorbency and pH‐sensitivity increased while salt absorbency and temperature‐ sensitivity decreased with increasing IA/NIPAM mass ratio. Both water absorbency and salt absorbency increased first with crosslinker amount increased to 0.2 wt %, and then decreased with increasing crosslinker amount. Temperature‐induced shrinkage range of the dual responsive hydrogels was higher and broader than that of the conventional poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) hydrogel. TEM indicated that the as‐synthesized hydrogel particles were regular and spherical‐like in shape and had the mean particle size of 49nm in the range of 30–78 nm. FTIR indicated the structure of the dual responsive hydrogels. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2015 , 132, 42139.  相似文献

Thermosensitive hydrogels were prepared by free radical polymerization in aqueous solution from N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPA) monomer and N,N‐methylenebis(acrylamide) (MBAAm) crosslinker. The swelling equilibrium of the hydrogels in deionized water was investigated as a function of temperature and MBAAm content. The results indicated that the swelling behavior and temperature sensitivity of the hydrogels were affected by the amount of MBAAm content. The average molecular mass between crosslinks and polymer–solvent interaction parameter (χ) of the hydrogels were determined from equilibrium swelling values. The swelling variations were explained according to swelling theory based on the hydrogel chemical structure. The swelling equilibrium of the hydrogels was also investigated as a function of temperature in aqueous solutions of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and the cationic surfactant dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB). In deionized water, the hydrogels showed a discontinuous volume phase transition at 32°C. In SDS and DTAB solutions, the equilibrium swelling ratio and the volume phase transition temperature (lower critical solution temperature) of the hydrogels increased, which is ascribed to the conversion of nonionic PNIPA hydrogel into polyelectrolyte hydrogels because of binding of surfactant molecules through the hydrophobic interaction. Additionally, the amount of free SDS and DTAB ions was measured at different temperatures by a conductometric method; it was found that the electric conductivity of the PNIPA–surfactant systems depended strongly on both the type and concentration of surfactant solutions. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Summary  A novel porous PNIPA/Clay nanocomposite hydrogel (NC hydrogel) was prepared by in situ free-radical polymerization using inorganic clay as a crosslinker and calcium carbonate (CaCO3) particle as a pore-forming agent and subsequent extraction of CaCO3 with acid. The structure and morphology of the hydrogels were characterized by means of FTIR, TEM and SEM. The temperature responsive behaviors, the deswelling behaviors and the mechanical properties of the NC hydrogels were investigated in detail. The results showed that the swelling ratios below VPTT and the deswelling rates of the NC hydrogels were significantly improved as compared with the hydrogels without introduction of CaCO3. Moreover, the NC hydrogels thus prepared also exhibited good mechanical properties.  相似文献

Poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA)/silica composite hydrogels were prepared and the effects of the silica incorporation on the swelling and breaking characteristics of the hydrogels were investigated. To improve the dispersive property of silica in the PNIPA matrix via the formation of covalent bonds between the polymer and silica, vinyl groups were introduced in the silica by reacting it with a coupling agent, 3‐methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane. When unmodified silica was used as filler in the PNIPA‐composite hydrogel, the swelling ratio of the composite hydrogel below the critical gel transition temperature (CGTT) increased with increasing silica content. However, when the modified silica was used as the filler, the swelling ratio below CGTT decreased with increasing silica content because of the enhanced distribution and additional crosslinking. Above CGTT, the swelling ratios of the PNIPA/silica hydrogels were similar regardless of the silica modification. The gel breaking stress of the hydrogels increased with increasing silica content, and this enhancement was larger for the modified silica hydrogel. Scanning electron microscopy images showed that the modified silica particles were distributed more evenly in the PNIPA matrix than the unmodified ones were and that the size of cell‐like structure of the hydrogel decreased with increasing modified silica content. The dispersion of attapulgite (APT) as nanorod‐like single crystals is crucial to fully develop its functionality of one‐dimensional nanometer material as a filler of composite materials. In this study, APT was dispersed by the assistance of ethanol during the high‐pressure homogenization process to form individual nanorod‐like crystals. The dispersed APT was used to prepare new sodium alginate‐g‐poly(sodium acrylate‐co‐styrene)/attapulgite (NaAlg‐g‐P(NaA‐co‐St)/APT) superabsorbent nanocomposites. The effect of ethanol/water ratio on the dispersion of crystal bundles of APT was investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy, and the results indicate that APT crystal bundles were effectively disaggregated in ν(CH3CH2OH) : ν(H2O) ? 5 : 5 solution after homogenized at 50 MPa. The better dispersion of APT in NaAlg‐g‐P(NaA‐co‐St) matrix has clearly improved the gel strength (from 1300 Pa to 1410 Pa, ω = 100 rad/s), swelling capacity (442–521 g/g), swelling rate (3.3303–4.5736 g/g/s), and reswelling ability of the superabsorbent nanocomposite. Moreover, the nanocomposites showed fast swelling–deswelling responsive behavior in different saline solutions. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci., 2013  相似文献

In this study, pH‐ and temperature‐responsive hydrogels based on linear sodium alginate (SA) and crosslinked poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) were prepared by semi‐interpenetrating network (semi‐IPN) technique. The dually responsive hydrogels were characterized by FTIR, DSC, and SEM, and their temperature‐ and pH‐responsive behaviors were investigated by measuring equilibrium swelling ratios and pulsatile swelling experiments. The results showed that these hydrogels underwent volume phase transition at around 33°C irrespective of the pH value of the medium, but their pH sensitivity was evident only below their volume phase transition temperature. Under basic conditions, the swelling ratios of SA/PNIPAAm semi‐IPN hydrogels were greater than that of pure PNIPAAm hydrogel and increased with increasing SA content incorporated into the hydrogels, but the case was inverse under acidic conditions. The pulsatile swelling experiments indicated that the higher the SA content in SA/PNIPAAm semi‐IPN hydrogels, the faster the response rate to both pH and temperature change. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article describes the synthesis and swelling behavior of a superabsorbing hydrogel based on sodium alginate (NaAlg) and polyacrylonitrile (PAN). The physical mixture of NaAlg and PAN was hydrolyzed with a solution of NaOH to yield an alginate–poly(sodium acrylate‐co‐acrylamide) [Alg–poly(NaAA‐co‐AAm)] superabsorbent hydrogel. A proposed mechanism for hydrogel formation was suggested, and the structure of the product was established with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The effects of reaction variables were systematically optimized to achieve a hydrogel with a swelling capacity as high as possible. Under the optimized conditions concluded, the maximum capacity of swelling in distilled water was 610 g/g. The absorbency of the synthesized hydrogels was also measured in various salt solutions. The swelling ratios decreased with an increase in the ionic strength of the salt solutions. In addition, the swelling capacity was determined in solutions with pHs ranging from 1 to 13. The Alg–poly(NaAA‐co‐AAm) hydrogel exhibited pH responsiveness, so a swelling–deswelling pulsatile behavior was recorded at pHs 2 and 8. This on–off switching behavior made the hydrogel as a good candidate for the controlled delivery of bioactive agents. Finally, the swelling kinetics of the hydrogels with various particle sizes were preliminarily investigated as well. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 101: 2927–2937, 2006  相似文献

Macroporous temperature‐sensitive poly {N‐[3‐(dimethylaminopropyl)] methacrylamide} hydrogels were synthesized by free‐radical crosslinking polymerization of the monomer N‐[3‐(dimethylaminopropyl)] methacrylamide and the crosslinker N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide in aqueous solutions at 22°C. Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) with a molecular weight of 1000 g/mol was used as the pore‐forming agent during the polymerization reaction. The concentration of PEG in the polymerization solutions was varied between 0 and 18 wt %, whereas the crosslinker (N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide) concentration was fixed at 2 wt % (with respect to the monomer). The effects of the PEG concentration on the thermo‐induced phase‐transition behavior and the chemical structure, interior morphology, and swelling/deswelling kinetics were investigated. Normal‐type hydrogels were also prepared under the same conditions without PEG. An interesting feature of the swelling behavior of both the normal‐type and macroporous hydrogels was the reentrant phase transition, in which the hydrogels collapsed once and reswelled as the temperature was continuously increased. Scanning electron micrographs revealed that the interior network structure of the hydrogels prepared in PEG solutions became more porous with an increase in the PEG concentration in the polymerization solution. This more porous matrix provided numerous water channels for water diffusion in or out of the matrix and, therefore, an improved responsive rate to external temperature changes during the deswelling and swelling processes. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Thermo‐responsive poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (poly(NIPAAm)) and pH‐responsive poly(N,N′‐diethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (poly(DEAEMA)) polymers were grafted to carboxymethylchitosan (CMC) via radical polymerization to form highly water swellable hydrogels with dual responsive properties. Ratios of CMC, NIPAAm to DEAEMA used in the reactions were finely adjusted such that the thermo and pH responsiveness of the hydrogels was retained. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) indicated the formation of an internal porous structure for the swollen CMC hydrogels upon incorporation of poly(NIPAAm) and poly(DEAEMA). Effect of temperature and pH changes on water swelling properties of the hydrogels was investigated. It was found that the water swelling of the hydrogels was enhanced when the solution pH was under basic conditions (pH 11) or the temperature was below its lower critical solution temperature (LCST). These responsive properties can be used to regulate releasing rate of an entrapped drug from the hydrogels, a model drug, indomethacin was used to demonstrate the release. These smart and nontoxic CMC‐based hydrogels show great potential for use in controlled drug release applications with controllable on‐off switch properties. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. A series of temperature and pH sensitive hydrogels were synthesized using N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) as main monomer, sodium alginate (SA) as semi-IPN material, ethyl acrylate (EA) and acrylic acid (AA) as comonomer, and N-maleyl chitosan (N-MACH) as cross-linker. The temperature and pH sensitive behavior, swelling/deswelling kinetics of the hydrogels were investigated. And the mechanism of the phase transition was summed up. Sodium alginate/Poly(N-isopropylacryamide) semi-interpenetrating polymer network (SA/PNIPAAm semi-IPN) hydrogels exhibited a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) at about 32 °C with no significant deviation from the conventional PNIPAAm hydrogels. Poly(N-isopropylacryamide-co-ethyl acrylate) (P(NIPAAm-co-EA)) hydrogels exhibited LCST at 29–31°C, increasing the amount of EA in the hydrogel gradually decreased the LCST. Poly(N-isopropylacryamide-co-acrylic acid) [P(NIPAAm-co-AA)] hydrogels exhibited LCST at 34–39°C, with decreasing NIPAAm/AA from 96/4 to 92/8 and 90/10, the LCST increased from 34°C to 37°C and 39°C. In the swelling/deswelling kinetics, all the dried hydrogels exhibited fast swelling/deswelling behavior, which might be attributed to macroporous structures of the hydrogels.  相似文献
