Human head dynamic response to side impact by finite element modeling   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
The dynamic response of the human head to side impact was studied by 2-dimensional finite element modeling. Three models were formulated in this study. Model I is an axisymmetric model. It simulated closed shell impact of the human head, and consisted of a single-layered spherical shell filled wiht an inviscid fluid. The other two models (Model II and III) are plane strain models of a coronal section of the human head. Model II approximated a 50th percentile male head by an outer layer to simulate cranial bone and an inviscid interior core to simulate the intracranial contents. The configuration of Model III is the same as Model II but more detailed anatomical features of the head interior were added, such as, cerebral spinal fluid (CSF); falx cerebri, dura, and tentorium. Linear elastic material properties were assigned to all three models. All three models were loaded by a triangular pulse with a peak pressure of 40 kPa, effectively producing a peak force of 1954 N (440 lb). The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of the membranes and that of the mechanical properties of the skull, brain, and membrane on the dynamic response of the brain during side impact, and to compare the pressure distributions from the plane strain model with the axisymmetric model. A parametric study was conducted on Model II to characterize fully its response to impact under various conditions.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

An axisymmetric deformation of a viscoelastic sphere bounded by a prestressed elastic thin shell in response to external pressure is studied by a finite element method. The research is motivated by the need for understanding the passive behavior of human leukocytes (white blood cells) and interpreting extensive experimental data in terms of the mechanical properties. The cell at rest is modeled as a sphere consisting of a cortical prestressed shell with incompressible Maxwell fluid interior. A large-strain deformation theory is developed based on the proposed model. General non-linear, large strain constitutive relations for the cortical shell are derived by neglecting the bending stiffness. A representation of the constitutive equations in the form of an integral of strain history for the incompressible Maxwell interior is used in the formulation of numerical scheme. A finite element program is developed, in which a sliding boundary condition is imposed on all contact surfaces. The mathematical model developed is applied to evaluate experimental data of pipette tests and observations of blood flow.  相似文献

The structural models created to understand the cytoskeletal mechanics of cells in suspension are described here. Suspended cells can be deformed by well-defined surface stresses in an Optical Stretcher [Guck, J., Ananthakrishnan, R., Mahmood, H., Moon, T.J., Cunningham, C.C., K?s, J., 2001. The optical stretcher: a novel laser tool to micromanipulate cells. Biophys. J. 81(2), 767-784], a two-beam optical trap designed for the contact-free deformation of cells. Suspended cells have a well-defined cytoskeleton, displaying a radially symmetric actin cortical network underlying the cell membrane with no actin stress fibers, and microtubules and intermediate filaments in the interior. Based on experimental data using suspended fibroblasts, we create two structural models: a thick shell actin cortex model that describes cell deformation for a localized stress distribution on these cells and a three-layered model that considers the entire cytoskeleton when a broad stress distribution is applied. Applying the models to data, we obtain a (actin) cortical shear moduli G of approximately 220 Pa for normal fibroblasts and approximately 185 Pa for malignantly transformed fibroblasts. Additionally, modeling the cortex as a transiently crosslinked isotropic actin network, we show that actin and its crosslinkers must be co-localized into a tight shell to achieve these cortical strengths. The similar moduli values and cortical actin and crosslinker densities but different deformabilities of the normal and cancerous cells suggest that a cell's structural strength is not solely determined by cytoskeletal composition but equally importantly by (actin) cytoskeletal architecture via differing cortical thicknesses. We also find that although the interior structural elements (microtubules, nucleus) contribute to the deformed cell's exact shape via their loose coupling to the cortex, it is the outer actin cortical shell (and its thickness) that mainly determines the cell's structural response.  相似文献

1 Introduction Molluscan species exhibit a range of morphologies associated with their particular function and habitat. The razor clam (Ensis siliqua) is a bivalve mollusc, usually found in fine sands, that burrows up to depths of 20 fathoms (~36 m)[1]. The species is found in several coastal regions of the British Isles, the Norwegian Sea, the Baltic south, the Iberian Peninsula, the Mediterranean and along the Atlantic coast of Morrocco[2]. Shell exchanges between hermit crabs may occur after a period of shell rapping, when the initiating or attacking crab brings its shell rapidly and repeatedly into contact with the shell of the non-initiator or defender, in a series of bouts. There are two opposing models of hermit crab shell exchange and the function of shell rapping. The negotiation model views shell exchange as a mutualistic activity, in which the initiator supplies information about the quality of its shell via the fundamental frequency of the rapping sound. The aggression model views shell rapping as either detrimental to the defending crab, or as providing it with information about the initiator''s ability or motivation to continue, or both. The negotiation model makes no predictions about the temporal pattern of rapping, but under the aggression model it would be expected that crabs that rapped more vigorously would be more likely to effect an exchange. Repeating the signal could be expected under either model. Crabs that achieve an exchange rap more vigorously, rapping is more persistent when a clear gain in shell quality may be achieved, and the vigour is greater when the relative resource-holding potential (or ''fighting ability'') is high. These findings support the aggression model rather than the negotiation model. Contrary to the predictions of game theory, crabs that do not effect an exchange appear to signal that they are about to give up. The data suggest that rapping is performed repeatedly because the accumulation of all of the performances acts as a signal of stamina.  相似文献

Studies of various biological tissues have shown that residual strains are important for tissue function. Since a force balance exists in whole wall thickness specimens cut radially, it is evident that layer separation is an important procedure in the understanding of the meaning of residual stresses and strains. The present study investigated the zero-stress state and residual strain distribution in a three-layer model of the pig oesophagus. The middle part of the oesophagus was obtained from six slaughterhouse pigs. Four 3-mm-wide rings were serially cut from each oesophagus. Two of them were used for separating the wall into mucosa-submucosa, inner and outer muscle layers. The remaining two rings were kept as intact rings. The inner and outer circumferences and wall thickness of different layers in intact and separated rings were measured from the digital images in the no-load state and zero-stress state. The opening angle was measured and the residual strain at the inner and outer surface of different layers and the intact wall were computed. Compared with intact sectors (62.8+/-9.8 degrees ), the opening angles were smaller in the inner muscle sectors (37.2+/-11.4 degrees , P<0.01), whereas the opening angles of mucosa-submucosa (63.9+/-6.8 degrees ) and outer muscle sectors (63.9+/-6.8 degrees ) did not differ (P>0.1). Referenced to the zero-stress state of the intact sectors, the inner and outer residual strains of the intact rings was -0.128+/-0.043 and outer residual strain was 0.308+/-0.032. Referenced to the "true" zero-stress state of separated three-layered sectors, the inner residual strain of intact rings were -0.223+/-0.021 (P<0.01) and 0.071+/-0.022 (P<0.01). Referenced to the "true" zero-stress state, the residual strain distribution of different layers in intact rings was shown that the inner surface residual strain was negative at mucosa-submucosa and inner muscle layers and was positive at outer muscle layer, whereas the outer surface residual strain was negative at the mucosa-submucosa layer and positive at the inner and outer muscle layers. For the separated different layered rings, the inner residual strain was negative and outer residual strain was positive; however, the absolute values did not differ (P>0.1). In conclusion, it is possible to microsurgically separate the oesophagus into three layers, i.e., mucosa-submucosa, inner muscle and outer muscle layers, the residual strain differ between the layers, and the residual strain distribution was more uniform after the layers were separated.  相似文献

The constitutive behavior of bovine scleral and corneal tissues is measured in tension and compression, at quasi-static and moderate strain rates. Experiments are conducted at strain rates up to about 50 strain per second by a pneumatic testing system developed to overcome noise and measurement difficulties associated with the time dependent test of low impedance materials. Results for the tissues at room and the natural bovine body temperatures are similar and indicate that ocular tissue exhibits nonlinear stiffening for increasing strain rates, a phenomena termed rate hardening. For example, at a tensile strain rate of 29/s, corneal tissue is found to develop 10 times the stress that it does quasi-statically at the same strain. Thus, conventional constitutive models will grossly underpredict stresses occurring in the corneo-scleral shell due to moderate dynamic events. This has implication to the accuracy of ocular injury models, the study of the stress field in the corneo-scleral shell for glaucoma research and tonometry measurements. The measured data at various strain rates is represented using the general framework of a constitutive model that has been used to represent biological tissue mechanical data. Here it is extended to represent the measured data of the ocular tissues over the range of tested strain rates. Its form allows for straightforward incorporation in various numerical codes. The experimental and analytical methods developed here are felt to be applicable to the test of human ocular tissue.  相似文献

This paper specializes the nonlinear laminated-muscle-shell theory developed in Part I to cylindrical geometry and computes stresses in arteries and the beating left ventricle. The theory accounts for large strain, material nonlinearity, thick-shell effects, torsion, muscle activation, and residual strain. First, comparison with elasticity solutions for pressurized arteries shows that the accuracy of the shell theory increases as transmural stress gradients and the shell thickness decrease. Residual strain reduces the stress gradients, lowering the error in the predicted peak stress in thick-walled arteries (R/t = 2.8) from about 30 to 10 percent. Second, the canine left ventricle is modeled as a thick-walled laminated cylinder with an internal pressure. Each layer is composed of transversely isotropic muscle with a fiber orientation based on anatomical data. Using a single pseudostrain-energy density function (with time-varying coefficients) for passive and active myocardium, the model predicts strain distributions that agree fairly well with published experimental measurements. The results also show that the peak fiber stress occurs subendocardially near the beginning of ejection and that residual strains significantly alter stress gradients within each lamina, but the magnitude of the peak fiber stress changes by less than 20 percent.  相似文献

Patient-specific estimates of the stress distribution in the left ventricles (LV) may have important applications for therapy planning, but computing the stress generally requires knowledge of the material behaviour. The passive stress-strain relation of myocardial tissue has been characterized by a number of models, but material parameters (MPs) remain difficult to estimate. The aim of this study is to implement a zero-pressure algorithm to reconstruct numerically the stress distribution in the LV without precise knowledge of MPs. We investigate the sensitivity of the stress distribution to variations in the different sets of constitutive parameters. We show that the sensitivity of the LV stresses to MPs can be marginal for an isotropic constitutive model. However, when using a transversely isotropic exponential strain energy function, the LV stresses become sensitive to MPs, especially to the linear elastic coefficient before the exponential function. This indicates that in-vivo identification efforts should focus mostly on this MP for the development of patient-specific finite-element analysis.  相似文献

It has been well established that articular cartilage is compositionally and mechanically inhomogenous through its depth. To what extent this structural inhomogeneity is a prerequisite for appropriate cartilage function and integrity is not well understood. The first hypothesis to be tested in this study was that the depth-dependent inhomogeneity of the cartilage acts to maximize the interstitial fluid load support at the articular surface, to provide efficient frictional and wear properties. The second hypothesis was that the inhomogeneity produces a more homogeneous state of elastic stress in the matrix than would be achieved with uniform properties. We have, for the first time, simultaneously determined depth-dependent tensile and compressive properties of human patellofemoral cartilage from unconfined compression stress relaxation tests. The results show that the tensile modulus increases significantly from 4.1 +/- 1.9 MPa in the deep zone to 8.3 +/- 3.7 MPa at the superficial zone, while the compressive modulus decreases from 0.73 +/- 0.26 MPa to 0.28 +/- 0.16 MPa. The experimental measurements were then implemented with the finite-element method to compute the response of an inhomogeneous and homogeneous cartilage layer to loading. The finite-element models demonstrate that structural inhomogeneity acts to increase the interstitial fluid load support at the articular surface. However, the state of stress, strain, or strain energy density in the solid matrix remained inhomogeneous through the depth of the articular layer, whether or not inhomogeneous material properties were employed. We suggest that increased fluid load support at the articular surface enhances the frictional and wear properties of articular cartilage, but that the tissue is not functionally adapted to produce homogeneous stress, strain, or strain energy density distributions. Interstitial fluid pressurization, but not a homogeneous elastic stress distribution, appears thus to be a prerequisite for the functional and morphological integrity of the cartilage.

Failure of articular cartilage has been investigated experimentally and theoretically, but there is only partial agreement between observed failure and predicted regions of peak stresses. Since trauma and repetitive stress are implicated in the etiopathogenesis of osteoarthritis, it is important to develop cartilage models which correctly predict sites of high stresses. Cartilage is anisotropic and inhomogeneous, though it has been difficult to incorporate these complexities into engineering analyses. The objectives of this study are to demonstrate that a transversely isotropic, biphasic model of cartilage can provide agreement between predicted regions of high stresses and observed regions of cartilage failure and that with transverse isotropy cartilage stresses are more sensitive to convexity and concavity of the surfaces than with isotropy. These objectives are achieved by solving problems of diarthrodial joint contact by the finite-element method. Results demonstrate that transversely isotropic models predict peak stresses at the cartilage surface and the cartilage-bone interface, in agreement with sites of fissures following impact loading; isotropic models predict peak stresses only at the cartilage-bone interface. Also, when convex cartilage layers contacted concave layers in this study, the highest tensile stresses occur in the convex layer for transversely isotropic models; no such differences are found with isotropic models. The significance of this study is that it establishes a threshold of modeling complexity for articular cartilage that provides good agreement with experimental observations under impact loading and that surface curvatures significantly affect stress and strain within cartilage when using a biphasic transversely isotropic model.  相似文献

In this paper, the light absorption in the active layer of polymer solar cells (OPV) by using plasmonic nanocrystals with a hexagonal lattice structure is investigated. To study the relationship between the performance of the OPV solar cell and its active layer, a three-dimensional model of its morphology is utilized. Therefore, the three-dimensional (3D) finite-difference time-domain method and Lumerical software were used to measure the field distribution and light absorption in the active layer in terms of wavelength. OPV solar cells with bilayer and bulk heterojunction structured cells were designed using hexagonal lattice crystals with plasmonic nanoparticles, as well as core–shell geometry to govern a design to optimize light trapping in the active layer. The parameters of shape, material, periodicity, size, and the thickness of the active layer as a function of wavelength in OPV solar cells have been investigated. A very thin active layer and an ultra-thin shell were used to achieve the highest increase in optical absorption. The strong alternating electromagnetic field around the core–shell plasmonic nanoparticles resulting from the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) suggested by the Ag plasmonic nanocrystals increased the intrinsic optical absorption in the active layer poly(3-hexylthiophene):phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PCBM). Based on the photovoltaic results, the short circuit current ranged from 19.7 to 26.7 mA/cm2.

The periostracum in Unionidae consists of two layers. The outer one is secreted within the periostracal groove, while the inner layer is secreted by the epithelium of the outer mantle fold. The periostracum reaches its maximum thickness at the shell edge, where it reflects onto the shell surface. Biomineralization begins within the inner periostracum as fibrous spheruliths, which grow towards the shell interior, coalesce and compete mutually, originating the aragonitic outer prismatic shell layer. Prisms are fibrous polycrystalline aggregates. Internal growth lines indicate that their growth front is limited by the mantle surface. Transition to nacre is gradual. The first nacreous tablets grow by epitaxy onto the distal ends of prism fibres. Later growth proceeds onto previously deposited tablets. Our model involves two alternative stages. During active shell secretion, the mantle edge extends to fill the extrapallial space and the periostracal conveyor belt switches on, with the consequential secretion of periostracum and shell. During periods of inactivity, only the outer periostracum is secreted; this forms folds at the exit of the periostracal groove, leaving high-rank growth lines. Layers of inner periostracum are added occasionally to the shell interior during prolonged periods of inactivity in which the mantle is retracted.  相似文献

Different rheological concepts and theoretical studies have been recently presented using models of myocardial mechanics. Complex analysis of the mechanical behavior of the left ventricular wall have been developed in order to estimate the local stresses and deformations that occur during the heart cycle as well as the ventricular stroke volume and pressure. Theoretical models have taken into account non-linear and viscoelastic passive properties of the myocardium tissue, when subjected to large deformations, through given strain energy functions or stress-strain relations. Different prolate spheroid geometries have been considered for such thick shell cardiac structure. During the active state of the contraction, the rheological behavior of the fibers has been described using different muscle models and relationships between fiber tension and strain, and activation degree. A forthcoming approach for bridging the gap between the knowledge of the muscle fiber microrheological properties and the study of the mechanical behavior of the entire ventricle, consists in including anisotropic and inhomogeneous effects through fiber direction field.  相似文献

It is generally accepted that the periodontal ligament (PDL) plays a crucial role in transferring occlusal forces from the teeth to the alveolar bone. Studies using finite element analysis (FEA) have helped to better understand this role and show that the stresses and strains in the alveolar bone are influenced by whether and how PDL is included in FE models. However, when the overall distribution of stresses and strains in crania and mandibles are of interest, PDL is often not included in FE models, although little is known about how this affects the results. Here we study the effect of representing PDL as a layer of solid material with isotropic homogeneous properties in an FE model of a human mandible using a novel application of geometric morphometrics. The results show that the modelling of the PDL affects the deformation and thus strain magnitudes not only of the alveolar bone around the biting tooth, but that the whole mandible deforms differently under load. As a result, the strain in the mandibular corpus is significantly increased when PDL is included, while the strain in the bone beneath the biting tooth is reduced. These results indicate the importance of the PDL in FE studies. Thus we recommend that the PDL should be included in FE models of the masticatory apparatus, with tests to assess the sensitivity of the results to changes in the Young's modulus of the PDL material.  相似文献

In response to starvation, Bacillus anthracis can form a specialized cell type called the spore, which is the infectious particle for the disease anthrax. The spore is largely metabolically inactive and can resist a wide range of stresses found in nature. In spite of its dormancy, the spore can sense the presence of nutrient and rapidly return to vegetative growth. These properties help the spore to persist for long periods of time in the environment, survive host defenses after entering the body, and cause disease when the correct location in the host is reached. The anatomy of the spore is unique among bacteria, being comprised of a series of specialized concentric shells, each of which provides specific critical functions. Surrounding the spore core (which houses the chromosome) is a peptidoglycan layer important for spore dormancy, a protein shell that resists a variety of toxic molecules, and finally an exterior protein and glycoprotein layer that, among other functions, mediates interactions with surfaces, including those encountered by the spore within the host. Detailed molecular analysis of these shells has shed considerable light on how each layer determines specific spore properties. Future work, especially on the outermost spore layer, is likely to advance therapeutics, methods for spore decontamination and other critical biodefense technologies.  相似文献

The actin cortex is a thin layer of actin, myosin and actin-binding proteins that underlies the membrane of most animal cells. It is highly dynamic and can undergo remodelling on timescales of tens of seconds, thanks to protein turnover and myosin-mediated contractions. The cortex enables cells to resist external mechanical stresses, controls cell shape and allows cells to exert forces on their neighbours. Thus, its mechanical properties are the key to its physiological function. Here, we give an overview of how cortex composition, structure and dynamics control cortex mechanics and cell shape. We use mitosis as an example to illustrate how global and local regulation of cortex mechanics gives rise to a complex series of cell shape changes.  相似文献

Random fiber networks constitute the solid skeleton of many biological materials such as the cytoskeleton of cells and extracellular matrix of soft tissues. These random networks show unique mechanical properties such as nonlinear shear strain-stiffening and strain softening when subjected to preextension and precompression, respectively. In this study, we perform numerical simulations to characterize the influence of axial prestress on the nonlinear mechanical response of random network structures as a function of their micromechanical and geometrical properties. We build our numerical network models using the microstructure of disordered hexagonal lattices and quantify their nonlinear shear response as a function of uniaxial prestress strain. We consider three different material models for individual fibers and fully characterize their influence on the mechanical response of prestressed networks. Moreover, we investigate both the influence of geometric disorder keeping the network connectivity constant and the influence of the randomness in the stiffness of individual fibers keeping their mean stiffness constant. The effects of network connectivity and bending rigidity of fibers are also determined. Several important conclusions are made, including that the tensile and compressive prestress strains, respectively, increase and decrease the initial network shear stiffness but have no effect on the maximal shear modulus. We discuss the findings in terms of microstructural properties such as the local strain energy distribution.  相似文献
