A brown glass bottle containing yellow liquid was submitted for examination for the presence of common controlled substances. While no controlled substances were detected, the liquid was identified as impure cyclohexyl nitrite, a compound of the same chemical class as amyl and butyl nitrite, which are known for their abuse potential. A bottle labeled cyclohexyl nitrite, but not confirmed by analysis, is the only known previous case submitted to this lab. The case history, examination, and analytical results are presented.  相似文献

Single-strength orange juice prepared from three nationally available brands of frozen orange juice concentrate was analyzed for ascorbic acid after exposure to light and air for varying periods up to eighteen days. For two of the brands, brown, foil-covered bottles offered no greater protection against ascorbic acid loss than clear glass bottles. Storage time appeared to be a greater contributor to ascorbic acid loss than type of container in two brands. One brand showed both the effect of storage time and type of container, since the juice stored in the brown bottle lost significantly less ascorbic acid after the same period than juice stored in the clear bottle.  相似文献

Mother's milk is the best food for the baby. The need to use foods other than mother's milk has always represented a challenging problem to be solved. The author warns that the high mortality during the first year of life during the early years of the XXth century (20%) peaked at an amazing 80% in children artificially fed at orphanages. In the considered years, the usage of baby's bottle spread among babies that could not be fed by mothers or wet-nurses. The idea of rubber teat 1845 and of automatic devices for the production of glass bottle - 1903 - contributed to the diffusion of the baby's bottle. First baby's bottles were variously shaped. However, the finding of severe gastroenteritis caused by a long rubber tube attached to the rubber teat (the so-called death-bottle), together with the necessity of a careful cleaning and the diffusion of Soxhket's system (sterilization of many bottles in the same container) will lead to the choice of large mouthed cylindrical bottles, very similar to the plastic bottles used nowadays.  相似文献

We describe the prenatal ultrasonographic features that led to the diagnosis of a lingual lymphangioma. The risk of upper airway obstruction, which is associated with this rare abnormality, prompted us to plan careful perinatal management. We believe that, in cases of suspected lymphangioma of the tongue or other oropharyngeal tumors, elective delivery should be carried out in a tertiary referral center in which emergency ventilation and tracheostomy are possible.  相似文献

The aim of this project was to determine the severity of nursing caries, and to examine contributing behavioral factors, in a group of Vietnamese families in British Columbia, Canada. The data collected became the basis for a community-based oral health promotion program. Information on feeding, dental health practices, and dental caries were collected for 60 mother/child pairs. For children > or = 18 mos, prevalence of nursing caries was 64 percent. Sixty-five percent of all children had a naptime bottle, and 85 percent > or = 18 mos had a "comfort" bottle that was carried around, and drunk from during the day. Milk was the most common beverage. A "comfort" bottle was significantly related to the presence of nursing caries, P = 0.02; a naptime bottle had a less significant association, P = 0.07. Dental knowledge questions revealed that all mothers knew that a child who had a "comfort" bottle could get tooth decay, but 63 percent thought that cavities were not a problem in baby teeth.  相似文献

The morbidity associated with total glossectomy for treatment of base of tongue carcinomas provides the impetus to investigate techniques to salvage the uninvolved normal anterior tongue. This report describes a method of reinnervation of the anterior tongue using a hypoglossal-lingual transfer. In Cynomolgus monkeys, unilateral transfers with and without a subsequent muscle fillet resulted in reinnervation from the base to the tip of the tongue. It is proposed that hypoglossal-lingual nerve transfers be considered to allow sparing and return of function to the anterior tongue in conjunction with a resection of the tongue base. Additional experiments confirmed that the base of the tongue, like other midline muscles, has bilateral and separate innervation. The presence of a physiological lingual-hypoglossal reflex in the normal animal was documented.  相似文献

A Darcy bottle is a water bottle that is filled with porous material and liquid, and that contains a drain assembly on the bottom of the bottle to allow liquid to drain. A collection of Darcy bottles with different cross-sectional area, different types and amounts of porous material, and different types and amounts of liquid are used in a series of classroom activities to illustrate Darcy’s law and basic concepts of hydraulic conductivity. Each activity can be completed in a few minutes, and can be conducted during a regular class period to supplement the lecture. Assessment results show that the Darcy bottle activities enhance student learning, particularly for less intuitive concepts.  相似文献

A total of 7,190 blood culture sets were obtained from adult patients with a suspected bloodstream infection. A 20-ml sample of blood was distributed equally between the aerobic FAN bottle which was monitored in the BacT/Alert system and a Plus Aerobic/F bottle which was monitored in the BACTEC 9240 system. A total of 988 positive cultures were obtained from 483 patients; however, only 453 positive cultures from 173 patients met the criteria for volume ( > or = ml per bottle) and clinical significance on the basis of concurrent case review required for data analysis. There were 25 and 68 false positives from the FAN and Plus Aerobic/F bottles, respectively. There were no statistically significant differences between systems in the number of positive cultures or septic episodes by species; however, the total number of Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates combined was significantly greater in the FAN bottle (P = 0.04). Detection times did not differ significantly between systems for positive cultures; however, episodes of Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia were detected significantly more rapidly from the FAN bottle (P = 0.005). There was no significant difference between systems in the detection of bloodstream infections in patients receiving antibiotics at the time of blood culture.  相似文献

Nitrate-reducing bacteria on rat tongues   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Nitrite-producing bacteria (NPB) were isolated from tongues of laboratory rats. The most commonly found nitrite-producing organism was Staphylococcus sciuri, followed by Staphylococcus intermedius, Pasteurella spp., and finally Streptococcus spp. Both morphometric quantification of bacteria on tongue sections and enumeration of culturable bacteria (CFU) showed an increase in the density of bacteria towards the posterior tongue. Up to 65% of bacteria were located in the deep clefts on the posterior tongue. The proportion of culturable NPB in the total culturable microbial population increased from 6% (10(5) CFU cm-2) on the anterior tongue to 65% (10(7) CFU cm-2) on the posterior tongue. Different species compositions of NPB were found on different tongue sections with S. intermedius populations decreasing and S. sciuri and Pasteurella populations increasing towards the posterior tongue. Nitrite production was sensitive to oxygen, and significant nitrite production was only detected on the posterior tongue where the majority of bacteria are situated in deep clefts in the tongue surface. This study suggests the importance of bacteria in nitrite production, from nitrate, on the tongue. Nitrite produced on the tongue may subsequently form nitric oxide in the acidic environment of the stomach. Because of the antimicrobial properties of nitric oxide, a key role for nitrate-reducing tongue bacteria in host animal defense against food-borne pathogens in proposed.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: Mutans streptococci (MS) are the primary pathogens involved in the development of early childhood caries. However, factors that may affect their acquisition in the mouths of young children are not well understood, and the period of initial colonization remains controversial. This study investigated the relationship of age, number of teeth, and bottle usage/content with regard to the isolation of MS in 6-24-month-old children. METHODS: A total of 122 children from low-income families attending a nutritional supplement program, and their mothers, participated in this study. Children were examined for dental caries and number of erupted teeth and were sampled for MS. Mothers were administered a questionnaire to obtain details of baby bottle use, including what food items were put in the bottle during the last week. RESULTS: MS was detected in more than one-third of the 6-24-month-olds. Unlike some studies that suggest a later period of infectivity, approximately 20% of children under 14 months of age, including 4 of 22 infants aged 6-9 months, were colonized with MS. When examined separately, age, number of teeth, and bottle usage/content were each found to be related to the presence of MS. Mutans streptococci colonization was more likely with increasing age and number of teeth, and children whose bottles contained sweetened beverages were more likely to be colonized than children whose bottles contained milk. Logistic regression models that controlled for both age and number of teeth indicated that children who consumed sweetened beverages in their baby bottle had a statistically significant, four-fold increase in the odds of colonization by MS relative to children who consumed milk. CONCLUSIONS: The finding that approximately 20% of the children under 14 months of age were infected with MS indicates that colonization in this sample of low-income preschool children may begin earlier than suggested by some investigations. Additionally, the risk of MS colonization appears lower among infants who consume milk rather than sweetened beverages in the bottle.  相似文献

We have previously shown that caudal tracheal displacement alters the airflow dynamics of the upper airway. In the present study, we specifically examined the effects of tongue and tracheal displacement on upper airway airflow dynamics. To determine how tongue and tracheal displacement modulate maximal inspiratory airflow (VImax), we analyzed the pressure-flow relationships obtained in the isolated upper airway of paralyzed cats. VImax and its determinants, the pharyngeal critical pressure (Pcrit) and the nasal resistance (Rn) upstream to the flow-limiting site, were measured as tongue displacement and tracheal displacement were systematically varied. Four results were obtained: 1) there was no independent effect of tongue displacement on VImax, Pcrit, or Rn; 2) there was an increase in VImax with 2 cm of tracheal displacement, which was associated with a decrease in Pcrit and an increase in Rn; 3) there was an interactive effect of tongue and tracheal displacement on VImax and Pcrit but not on Rn; and 4) there was a large increase in VImax with tongue displacement > 2.5 cm with the trachea nondisplaced, which was associated with a large decrease in Pcrit and a large increase in Rn. We conclude that tongue and tracheal displacement exert differing influences on airflow dynamics and present a mechanical model of the upper airway that explains these results.  相似文献

We treated tongue ulcers in a twenty-two-month-old male child with Gaucher disease and several neuronopathic symptoms, including frequent convulsions. Because the patient was always thrusting his tongue and biting with his upper and lower primary incisors during the myoclonus and convulsions, traumatic decubital ulcers on the dorsum and ventral surface of the tongue were formed. During the convulsions, bleeding and pus discharges were observed. For the protection of the tongue from the teeth, a tongue protector was fabricated from a soft silicone relining material used for dentures. The protector covered the mandibular primary central incisors, the alveolar ridge, and the ventral surface, apex and dorsum of the tongue. The ulcer symptoms completely disappeared after two months of using the protector.  相似文献

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The spread of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection not due to drug needle sharing or transfusion is largely unknown in communities. A search for risk factors for HCV infection in an endemic area might elucidate inapparent modes of transmission. METHODS: We conducted screening for hepatitis virus markers and parenteral exposures to blood among 435 inhabitants in an isolated area known for its endemicity for non-A, non-B hepatitis and in a nonendemic area with 1542 inhabitants. RESULTS: The prevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen was the same in both areas. The prevalence of antibody to HCV verified by the recombinant immunoblot assay was 32.4% in the highly endemic area and 2.3% in the nonendemic area (P < 0.001). Risk factors for HCV infection in the highly endemic area were complex but included folk remedies such as acupuncture and "vacuuming" for congested blood in muscle by the use of a warm glass bottle. CONCLUSIONS: Folk remedies such as acupuncture and cutting of the skin using nonsterilized knives should be considered as possible routes of HCV transmission not associated with blood transfusion or sharing of drug paraphernalia.  相似文献

The movements of the tongue, hyoid, and jaw were recorded cineradiographically in preweaning pigs as they suckled bariumized milk from a veterinary teat or drank it from a bowl. The movements were quantified by measuring the X, Y coordinates of radioopaque markers embedded in the tongue and attached to both jaws and to the hyoid. EMG activity in masseter, anterior digastric, geniohyoid, genioglossus, hyoglossus, sternohyoid, stylohyoid, and omohyoid muscles was recorded synchronously with cineradiography at 100 frames/sec. In both suckling and drinking, the movements were characterized by minimal movements of the jaw and hyoid but extensive movements of the tongue. In suckling, the movements were largely confined to the midposterior part of the tongue. A seal was formed between the posterior tongue and soft palate while a depression formed in the mid-tongue; this was associated with fluid moving into the depression probably because of a reduced intraoral pressure. The depression was associated with increased EMG activity in the genioglossus muscle and overlapping activity in digastric, geniohyoid, hyoglossus, and sternohyoid muscles. In drinking cycles, significant movement occurred in all parts of the tongue; milk ingestion was associated with tongue movements that combined elements characteristic both of suckling (mid-tongue depression with a posterior seal) and of lapping (extensive anteroposterior movements within the tongue itself). In drinking, compared to suckling, there was a major reduction in EMG activity in masseter, digastric, geniohyoid, and sternohyoid muscles. After milk had accumulated in the valleculae, swallows usually occurred in every other cycle during suckling and in every third or fourth cycle during drinking. The emptying of the valleculae was an event that was embedded in the early jaw-opening phase of an otherwise normal suckling or drinking cycle. Emptying of the valleculae was associated with posteriorly directed movement of the back of the tongue and increased EMG activity in hyoglossus, styloglossus, and omohyoid muscles. No differences were noted in the kinematics associated with swallowing in the two activities, but, in the normalized and averaged EMG data, there were significant differences in the timing of genioglossus activity and in the relative balance of hyoglossal and stylohyoid activity.  相似文献

Most difficulties with intravenous fluid charting are due to the inability to identify which bottle/bag on the balance sheet corresponds to the bottle/bag on the order sheet. These can be eliminated by allocating every bottle/bag a number in sequence and charting intravenous fluids in START and FINISH columns against a time scale. Accumulation of the Running Total minimises arithmetical errors as only two numbers are added together on any one occasion. A definitive balance form and order sheet, printed on both sides of a single sheet of A4 paper illustrates the "B Number" method with a reasonably complicated example of fluid balance.  相似文献

Invagination of epithelial tissue occurs during gastrulation, neurulation, and organogenesis in many organisms. However, the underlying morphogenetic mechanisms of invagination are not understood. To elucidate these mechanisms, we have analyzed the initial invagination of the vegetal plate in the sea urchin embryo, a process termed primary invagination. At the onset of invagination, a ring of cells with highly constricted apices (bottle cells) encircles a group of two to eight round, central cells. To investigate the morphogenetic role of the bottle cells in the process of primary invagination, we have undertaken a series of laser ablation studies in which different proportions of various cell types were ablated and the effects were recorded using 4-D microscopy. Elimination of a 90 degrees-180 degrees arc of bottle cells markedly retards invagination, but only within the ablated region. Ablation of other cell types does not result in a statistically significant effect on primary invagination. These studies indicate that the number and arrangement of the bottle cells are critical factors for proper initiation of invagination. In addition, we have used the perturbing anti-hyalin antibody mAb183 to show that cell attachment to the hyaline layer is necessary for bottle cell formation and the initiation of primary invagination.  相似文献

In a clinical-experimental study the influence of variations in the palatal shape of upper removable appliances upon tongue position during swallowing was investigated. During a clinical examination of 35 dental students displaying a physiological swallowing pattern, the tongue position during swallowing was recorded by palatography on an individually adapted upper plate. During swallowing with a roughened plate with an individual palatal shape and an imitated palatal papilla, the tongue position was significantly more posterior than with a highly polished, unstructured plate. The number of students displaying a visceral swallowing pattern was significantly smaller with a roughened plate with palatal folds and papilla then with a polished, smooth appliance. A roughened, individually shaped appliance with palatal folds and palatal papilla should therefore be used after myofunctional therapy and in cases where disturbance of tongue function by the appliance is not desirable.  相似文献
