物联网的价值——对话Auto-ID中国实验室主任 闵昊

"2002年,物联网的概念由AUTO-ID中国实验室引入中国,当时知道这个概念的人局限在为数不多的业内专家。在物联网广受大众追捧的今天,闵昊教授对物联网却持有理性而冷静的态度:同其他产业一样,物联网要在明晰的商业模式下,由市场驱动要在应用中体现出其价值进而获得发展。同时,闵昊教授还对物联网和RFID产业的发展给出了中肯客观的建议。     

An overview of the internet of underwater things

Approximately 71% of the Earth's surface is covered by ocean, a continuous body of water that is customarily divided into several principal oceans and smaller seas. Ocean temperatures determine climate and wind patterns that affect life on land. Freshwater in lakes and rivers covers less than 1%. Its contamination seriously damages ecosystems. The Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT) is defined as a world-wide network of smart interconnected underwater objects that enables to monitor vast unexplored water areas. The purpose of this paper is to analyze how to benefit from the IoUT to learn from, exploit and preserve the natural underwater resources. In this paper, the IoUT is introduced and its main differences with respect to the Internet of Things (IoT) are outlined. Furthermore, the proposed IoUT architecture is described. Important application scenarios that illustrate the interaction of IoUT components have been proposed. Critical challenges have been identified and addressed.     

The more things change

Developing any nontrivial middleware-based distributed system is hard, regardless of the middleware technology. Although technology's continuous march should make systems easier to develop, somehow the details always remain challenging. New technologies only seem to make simple things simpler; they don't help with the more complex things. Horizontal concerns, such as security, transactions, fault tolerance, load balancing, and enterprise management, never seem to get easier, regardless of what middleware development platform you choose. Dealing with versioning and change management in a deployed middleware application can be complicated and costly. A good example of versioning coming into play for distributed middleware systems is the interface between any two applications or components. Interface versioning issues apply whether the middleware explicitly employs an interface definition language (IDL), as in distributed-object systems like Corba and Microsoft COM, or whether "interfaces" really are represented as exchanged documents, as in many messaging systems.     

From the internet of things to embedded intelligence

The Internet of Things (IoT) represents the future technology trend of sensing, computing, and communication. Under the Wisdom Web of Things (W2T) vision, the next-generation Internet will promote harmonious interaction among humans, computers, and things. Current research on IoT is primarily conducted from the perspective of identifying, connecting, and managing objects. In this paper, however, we attempt to enhance the IoT with intelligence and awareness under the W2T vision. By exploring the various interactions between humans and the IoT, we extract the “embedded” intelligence about individual, environment, and society, which can augment existing IoT systems with user, ambient, and social awareness. The characteristics, major applications, research issues, the reference architecture, as well as our ongoing efforts to embedded intelligence are also presented and discussed.

随着通信技术、网络技术、信息技术、数据库技术以及计算机技术的快速发展,物联网的产生是必然的,同时智能电网的发展是现代电网发展的主要方向,引领以信息化、自动化、互动化为基本特征的新一代电力工业革命。物联网应用在智能电网中将显著提高电力系统信息化水平、安全性与稳定性,改善现有电力系统基础设施的利用效率,满足节能环保的效果。介绍了物联网和智能电网的相关概念以及发展现状．并提出了物联网在智能电网中的具体应用。     

交通物联网的发展现状及趋势研究

针对交通物联网（即物联网在交通运输行业中的应用）发展的现状和趋势进行了研究, 在分析了国外IntelliDrive、eSafety和Smartway等项目以及国内主要交通物联网系统的基础上, 从安全性、环保型、移动性三个方面讨论了国内外交通物联网发展的异同点, 并进一步探讨了交通物联网未来的发展和应用前景, 即在充分利用车路协同技术来提高交通安全水平的同时, 加快交通物联网与云计算的结合, 构建交通运输云, 在统一的交通物联网标准体系和适宜的交通物联网运营模式下, 建立起综合开放的交通运输信息系统。     

物联网安全架构与关键技术

从信息安全的机密性、完整性和可用性等三个基本属性出发,分析了物联网安全需求和面临的安全问题,提出了物联网安全的系统架构,并对一些安全关键技术进行了深入研究,希望为建立物联网可靠的信息安全体系提供参考依据。     

Time to stop researching the important things?

From 2010 government funding for UK research will be based partly on metrics. One of the key metrics will be citations, with research income and postgraduate student numbers also assessed. While citation metrics seem sensible, there is a serious issue of what topics one researches, the methods used and the way in which a move to the use of citations will induce a change in research behaviour – especially a move to the dull middle ground. This paper investigates the potential impact of such a move on niche areas of IS research – here research on small- and medium-sized enterprises. However, the arguments hold for any new, emerging, or non-mainstream research area. The impacts of citation metrics on publication outlets and research method choice are assessed.
