Distributed combustion has been a promising combustion technique, for enabling a more uniform thermal field, resulting in ultra-low pollutant emissions, reduced combustion noise, and enhanced combustion efficiency. This work examines combustion of hydrogen-rich coal gases derived from Turkish coal under distributed combustion conditions. Focus here is on obtaining a broadened flame and reducing pollutant emissions. Numerical modelling was carried out using a commercial code in order to predict the thermal field and pollutant emissions of the hydrogen-rich coal gases under distributed combustion conditions. A gas mixture (90% N2 and 10% CO2) was utilized to simulate controlled entrainment of hot reactive product gases into the fresh mixture prior to ignition in order to seek distributed combustion. The results showed that distributed combustion provided far more uniform thermal field that resulted in greatly reduced NOx emissions. The results also showed that the temperature difference between the maximum and exit temperature was reduced to approximately 200 K under distributed conditions. In addition, the NOx pollutant emissions predicted for each gas were reduced to near zero levels under high intensity distributed combustion conditions supporting the available experimental data. It has been concluded that enhanced thermal field uniformity and significantly reduced NOx emissions were achieved for hydrogen-rich coal gases under distributed conditions.  相似文献

Hydrocarbon exhaust emissions are mainly recognized as a consequent of carbon-based fuel combustion in compression ignition (CI) engines. Alternative fuels can be coupled with hydrocarbon fuels to control the pollutant emissions and improve the engine performance. In this study, different parameters that influence the engine performance and emissions are illustrated with more details. This numerical work was carried out on a dual-fuel CI engine to study its performance and emission characteristics at different hydrogen energy ratios. The simulation model was run with diesel as injected fuel and hydrogen, along with air, as inducted fuel. Three-dimensional CFD software for numerical simulations was implemented to simulate the direct-injection CI engine. A reduced-reaction mechanism for n-heptane was considered in this work instead of diesel. The Hiroyasu-Nagel model was presented to examine the rate of soot formation inside the cylinder. This work investigates the effect of hydrogen variation on output efficiency, ignition delay, and emissions. More hydrogen present inside the engine cylinder led to lower soot emissions, higher thermal efficiency, and higher NOx emissions. Ignition timing delayed as the hydrogen rate increased, due to a delay in OH radical formation. Strategies such as an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) method and diesel injection timing were considered as well, due to their potential effects on the engine outputs. The relationship among the engine outputs and the operation conditions were also considered.  相似文献

Automobiles are one of the major sources of air pollution in the environment. In addition CO2 emission, a product of complete combustion also has become a serious issue due to global warming effect. Hence the search for cleaner alternative fuels has become mandatory. Hydrogen is expected to be one of the most important fuels in the near future for solving the problems of air pollution and greenhouse gas problems (carbon dioxide), thereby protecting the environment. Hence in the present work, an experimental investigation has been carried out using hydrogen in the dual fuel mode in a Diesel engine system. In the study, a Diesel engine was converted into a dual fuel engine and hydrogen fuel was injected into the intake port while Diesel was injected directly inside the combustion chamber during the compression stroke. Diesel injected inside the combustion chamber will undergo combustion first which in-turn would ignite the hydrogen that will also assist the Diesel combustion. Using electronic control unit (ECU), the injection timings and injection durations were varied for hydrogen injection while for Diesel the injection timing was 23° crank angle (CA) before injection top dead centre (BITDC). Based on the performance, combustion and emission characteristics, the optimized injection timing was found to be 5° CA before gas exchange top dead centre (BGTDC) with injection duration of 30° CA for hydrogen Diesel dual fuel operation. The optimum hydrogen flow rate was found to be 7.5 lpm. Results indicate that the brake thermal efficiency in hydrogen Diesel dual fuel operation increases by 15% compared to Diesel fuel at 75% load. The NOX emissions were higher by 1–2% in dual fuel operation at full load compared to Diesel. Smoke emissions are lower in the entire load spectra due to the absence of carbon in hydrogen fuel. The carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions were lesser in hydrogen Diesel dual fuel operation compared to Diesel. The use of hydrogen in the dual fuel mode in a Diesel engine improves the performance and reduces the exhaust emissions from the engine except for HC and NOX emissions.  相似文献

Multiple injections and natural gas addition were investigated as ways to modify combustion behaviour, and therefore pollutant emissions and specific fuel consumptions, inside a direct injection Diesel engine equipped with a common rail injection system. During the experimental tests, engine efficiency, in terms of fuel consumption, and pollutant emissions, in terms of nitric oxides, opacity, carbon monoxide and total hydrocarbons, have been measured. The tested multiple injection strategy consisted of the simultaneous use of early and pilot injections. This strategy has been compared with the more traditional techniques based on the use of either pilot or early injections. During the tests, the effects of several injection parameters were analysed, like duration and timing of early, pilot and main injections. Results show that, mainly for medium values of engine torque and speed, the injection of a small fuel quantity during the early stage of the compression stroke, coupled with the pilot injection, may be effective in reducing specific fuel consumption if compared to the only pilot or only early injection strategies. Furthermore, this result is obtained whit a simultaneous reduction in nitric oxides and particulate. However, unburned hydrocarbons levels remain constant or usually increase. Early injection is in effect a way to obtain a very lean premixed charge, both globally and locally, inside the combustion chamber. Therefore, it has been shown that nitric oxides and soot, deriving respectively from an inhomogeneous distribution of temperatures and a locally rich mixture, both decrease performing the early and pilot before the main injection.Concerning the natural gas addition, it has been premixed with the engine intake air before the turbocharger and used in small percentages, in order to improve the engine combustion and to reduce pollutant emissions, in particular the soot produced during the mixing-controlled combustion phase. Experiments underlined that, using the natural gas as an additive fuel, while performing the Diesel fuel main injection, leads to keep practically unchanged engine efficiency with respect to the traditional Diesel fuel operation mode. Concerning the emission levels at the exhaust, the use of small quantities of gas (10–30% respect to the total fuel energy) improves the oxides – soot trade-off; however, at the same time, total hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide emissions are characterized by higher values.  相似文献

The use of fossil fuel is expected to increase significantly by midcentury because of the large rise in the world energy demand despite the effective integration of renewable energies in the energy production sector. This increase, alongside with the development of stricter emission regulations, forced the manufacturers of combustion systems, especially gas turbines, to develop novel combustion techniques for the control of NOx and CO2 emissions, the latter being a greenhouse gas responsible for more than 60% to the global warming problem. The present review addresses different burner designs and combustion techniques for clean power production in gas turbines. Combustion and emission characteristics, flame instabilities, and solution techniques are presented, such as lean premixed air‐fuel (LPM) and premixed oxy‐fuel combustion techniques, and the combustor performance is compared for both cases. The fuel flexibility approach is also reviewed, as one of the combustion techniques for controlling emissions and reducing flame instabilities, focusing on the hydrogen‐enrichment and the integrated fuel‐flexible premixed oxy‐combustion approaches. State‐of‐the‐art burner designs for gas turbine combustion applications are reviewed in this study, including stagnation point reverse flow (SPRF) burner, dry low NOx (DLN) and dry low‐emission (DLE) burners, EnVironmental burners (including EV, AEV, and SEV burners), perforated plate (PP) burner, and micromixer (MM) burner. Special emphasis is made on the MM combustor technology, as one of the most recent advances in gas turbines for stable premixed flame operation with wide turndown and effective control of NOx emissions. Since the generation of pure oxygen is prerequisite to oxy‐combustion, oxygen‐separation membranes became of immense importance either for air separation for clean oxy‐combustion applications or for conversion/splitting of the effluent CO2 into useful chemical and energy products. The different carbon‐capture technologies, along with the most recent carbon‐utilization approaches towards CO2 emissions control, are also reviewed.  相似文献

Storing excess wind and solar energy in the form of hydrogen injected into the natural gas grid is one of the main ingredients of the energy transition. This hydrogen injection has an impact on emissions and the performance of user equipment. The present work reports on an experimental study of the combustion of methane-hydrogen mixture with fuel rich transverse staggered injection. The 15 kW domestic boiler used was equipped with 16 burners (2 × 8). The aim of this work is to better understand the simultaneous effects of fuel rich staged combustion (Ø = 2.0 ÷ 4.0), hydrogen blending of methane (0 ÷ 45%) on pollutant emissions and efficiency while maintaining a compromise between high power, fuel economy and low emissions. The results show that NOx, CO2 emissions decrease, CO and CxHy emission values increase and thermal efficiency values decrease with increasing hydrogen percentage and fuel rich staggering combustion.  相似文献

In order to slow down the continuing environmental deterioration, regulations for pollutant emissions limitations are increasingly rigorous. The development of new alternative fuels for internal combustion engines is a very interesting solution not only to overcome the pollution problem but also because of the petroleum shortage. In this context, the present work investigates the improvement of a DI diesel engine operating at constant speed (1500 rpm) and under dual fuel mode with eucalyptus biodiesel and natural gas (NG) enriched by various H2 quantities (15, 25 and 30 by v%). The eucalyptus biodiesel quantity injected into the engine cylinder is kept constant, to supply around 10% of the engine nominal power, for all examined engine loads. The engine load is further increased using only the gaseous fuel (NG+H2), which is introduced with the intake air. The effect of H2/NG blending ratio on the combustion parameters, performance and pollutant emissions of the engine is investigated and compared with those of pure NG case. An important benefit in terms of brake specific fuel consumption, reaching a decrease of 4–10% with the 25% H2 blend compared to the pure NG case, is achieved. Concerning the pollutant emissions, NG enrichment with H2 is an efficient solution to enhance the combustion process and hence reduce carbon monoxide, unburned hydrocarbon and soot emissions at high loads where they are important for pure NG. However for the nitrogen oxide emissions, NG blending with H2 is attractive only at low and medium loads where their levels are lower than pure NG.  相似文献

Nitrogen oxide formation is one source of pollution emission in fossil fuel combustion. Numerous technologies, such as flameless combustion, have been introduced to prevent such formation. This paper presents a panorama of flameless combustion and its principles. The influence of this technology on air preheats and gas diluents is discussed, as well as the effect of the firing mode on thermal NOX. The benefits of flameless combustion, including its energy conservation capability and capability to reduce pollutant emissions such as NOX emission to overcome environmental dilemmas in combustion, are discussed in this paper. Biomass fuel has been widely concerned because its net CO2 emission is close to zero. Biomass boilers are known to have lower pollutant emissions than fossil fuel boilers, but in some applications, they also release high-level CO and NO. We developed a medium-sized hydrogen and oxygen (HHO) generator, with high energy conversion rate and adjustable output gas. The HHO gas was then introduced into a biomass hot air generator for mixed combustion. The experimental results showed that based on the electricity consumption of gas production and biomass fuel price, the total cost during preheating reduced. In addition, the average concentrations of CO, NO and smoke decreased by 93.0%, 22.5% and 80%, respectively. Integration of biomass fuel and HHO gas can effectively reduce pollutant emissions and save fuel, especially in areas rich in renewable energy.  相似文献

Distributed combustion provides significant performance improvement of gas turbine combustors. Key features of distributed combustion includes uniform thermal field in the entire combustion chamber, thus avoiding hot-spot regions that promote NOx emissions (from thermal NOx) and significantly improved pattern factor. Rapid mixing between the injected fuel and hot oxidizer has been carefully explored for spontaneous ignition of the mixture to achieve distributed combustion reactions. Distributed reactions can be achieved in premixed, partially premixed or non-premixed modes of combustor operation with sufficient entrainment of hot and active species present in the flame and their rapid turbulent mixing with the reactants. Distributed combustion with swirl is investigated here for our quest to explore the beneficial aspects of such flows on clean combustion in simulated gas turbine combustion conditions. The goal is to develop high intensity combustor with ultra low emissions of NO and CO, and much improved pattern factor. Experimental results are reported from a cylindrical geometry combustor with different modes of fuel injection and gas exit stream location in the combustor. In all the configurations, air was injected tangentially to impart swirl to the flow inside the combustor. Ultra-low NOx emissions were found for both the premixed and non-premixed combustion modes for the geometries investigated here. Swirling flow configuration, wherein the product gas exits axially resulted in characteristics closest to premixed combustion mode. Change in fuel injection location resulted in changing the combustion characteristics from traditional diffusion mode to distributed combustion regime. Results showed very low levels of NO (∼3 PPM) and CO (∼70 PPM) emissions even at rather high equivalence ratio of 0.7 at a high heat release intensity of 36 MW/m3-atm with non-premixed mode of combustion. Results are also reported on lean stability limit and OH* chemiluminescence under both premixed and non-premixed conditions for determining the extent of distribution combustion conditions.  相似文献

In this paper, the non-premixed hydrogen-enriched methane-air combustion was investigated numerically with the use of a CFD code. In the first part of the study, the combustion experiments were performed in a back- pressure boiler using natural gas. The intake rate of fuel was kept constant as 45 Nm3/h while the coefficient for the air excess ratio was changed between 1.2 and 1.35. After the experiments, the numerical analyses were performed. The Fluent code was utilized as the simulation instrument. The eddy dissipation combustion model was selected to be used in the numerical analyses, since it is known that this combustion model can save computational time and fairly predict the combustion flame structure and emissions. Pure methane and natural gas were taken as fuels in the numerical analyses. The obtained results from the numerical analyses were validated with the experimental flue gas temperature and emission measurements. Then, the hydrogen-enrichment of pure methane fuel was investigated numerically in such a way that the boiler capacity (432 kW) was kept constant. The coefficient for the air excess ratio was 1.2 for all the considered combustion simulation cases. The hydrogen addition ratio was 25%, 50% and 75% by mass, respectively. The thermal NO emissions and temperature distributions in the combustion chamber were obtained according to the different hydrogen-enriched methane fuel combustion cases. In addition, the emissions contained in the flue gas together with the temperature values were calculated. The obtained results from the numerical studies indicate that the hydrogen-enrichment of methane reduces the carbon emissions, while it substantially augments the formation of the thermal NO emissions. The calculated thermal NO emission value in the flue gas is 147 ppm for the pure methane combustion case, and it is 566 ppm for the combustion case with 75% by mass of hydrogen addition ratio. Therefore, it is determined that hydrogen fuel is a pollutant from the thermal NO emission aspect for the considered enrichment ratios in the studied domestic boiler-burner system.  相似文献

In this investigation the role of hydrogen addition in a reverse flow configuration, consisting of both non-premixed and premixed combustion modes, have been examined for the CDC flames. In the non-premixed configuration the air injection port is positioned at combustor exit end while the fuel injection port is positioned on the side so that the fuel is injected in cross-flow with respect to air injection. The thermal intensity of the flames investigated is 85 MW/m3 atm to simulate high thermal intensity gas turbine combustion conditions. The results are presented on the global flame signatures, exhaust emissions, and radical emissions using experiments and flowfield using numerical simulations. Ultra low NOx emissions are found for both the premixed and non-premixed combustion modes. Addition of hydrogen to methane fuel resulted in only a slight increase of NO emission, significant decrease of CO emission and extended the lean operational limit of the combustor.  相似文献

This work presents the stability and performance characteristics of a Hybrid Solar Receiver Combustor operating in the Moderate or Intense Low oxygen Dilution (MILD) combustion regime. The device was operated at 12-kWth in two different modes of operation, i.e. combustion-only (MILD) and mixed (combustion and solar introduced into the device simultaneously), using natural gas (NG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), hydrogen (H2), NG/H2 and LPG/H2 blends. A 5-kWel xenon-arc lamp was used to simulate the concentrated solar radiation introduced into the device. The influence of the mode of operation and fuel composition on the combustion stability, thermal efficiency, energy balance, pollutant emissions, heat losses and distribution of heat flux within the receiver are presented for a range of values of the heat extraction. It was found that MILD combustion can be successfully stabilised within the HSRC over a broad range of operating conditions and fuel type, and in mixed operations, with low CO (for carbon-based fuels) and NOx emissions. The addition of H2 and/or concentrated solar radiation to the MILD process was found to increase its stability limits. Mixed and combustion-only operations showed similar performance, regardless of the fuel type, providing further evidence that the fuel flow rate can be used dynamically to compensate for variability in the solar resource. Also, the heat extracted from the heat exchanger and the specific fuel consumption were found to increase and decrease, respectively, by adding H2 to the system for both modes of operation, showing that hydrogen addition is beneficial. The numerical analysis revealed that the higher performance with H2 is attributable to a higher radiative heat transfer rate than for NG and LPG under MILD conditions.

This study aims to develop a low‐temperature catalytic burner using propane and toluene alternately as a fuel and to apply it to the drying of acrylic coatings on textiles. Pt catalysts deposited on ceramic fibres (Al2O3) were employed. For propane, the diffusive catalytic burner was used. The combustion efficiency of the diffusive catalytic burner deteriorated rapidly when it was installed in a downward position. Two concepts of forced diffusion combustion and premixed combustion were introduced to improve the downward placed diffusive catalytic burner. The combustion efficiency was enhanced with these modifications, but the forced diffusion was preferred since premixed combustion raised the temperature of the catalyst above 700°C leading to sintering of the catalyst. For the toluene catalytic burner the premixed combustion mode was adopted. Its optimum operation conditions were obtained by analyzing the temperatures within the catalyst layer and by adjustment of the toluene mixture. Field tests were performed on the drying acrylic coatings using the catalytic burners. The results showed that the use of catalytic burners had several benefits such as energy savings and less pollutant emissions. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The paper presents a survey of the interactive optimization cycle at Aachen University of Applied Sciences, used for the development of a new low emission Micromix combustor module for application in hydrogen fueled industrial gas turbines. During the development process, experimental and numerical methods are applied to optimize a given baseline combustor with 0.3 mm nozzles with respect to combustion efficiency, combustion stability, higher thermal power output per nozzle and reduced manufacturing complexity.Within the described research cycle combustion and flow simulations are used in the context of parametric studies for generating optimized burner geometries and the phenomenological interpretation of the experimental results. Experimental tests, carried out on an atmospheric combustion chamber test stand provide the basis for validation of simulation results and proof of the predicted combustion characteristics under scaled down gas turbine conditions. In the presented studies, an integration-optimized Micromix combustor with a nozzle diameter of 0.84 mm is tested at atmospheric pressure over a range of gas turbine operating conditions with hydrogen fuel. The combustor module offers an increase in the thermal power output per nozzle by approx. 390% at a significant reduced number of injectors when compared to the baseline design. This greatly benefits manufacturing complexity and the robustness of the combustion process against fuel contamination by particles.During atmospheric testing, the optimized combustor module shows satisfactory operating behavior, combustion efficiency and pollutant emission level. Within the evaluated operating range, which correlates to gas turbine part-, full- and overload conditions, the investigated combustor module exceeds 99% combustion efficiency. The Micromix combustor achieves NOx emissions less than 2.5 ppm corrected to 15 Vol% O2 at the design point.Based on numerical analyses and experimental low pressure testing, a full-scale gas turbine combustion chamber is derived. High pressure testing in the auxiliary power unit Honeywell/Garrett GTCP 36–300 shows stable operation during acceleration of the engine, during IDLE and during load variations between IDLE and Main Engine Start (MES) mode. Throughout the investigated operating range, the combustion chamber generates low NOx emissions under full-scale gas turbine conditions.  相似文献

Producer gas, which derived from a biomass gasification process, is considered as one of the alternative fuels, which is suitable for the heating process and power generation. Due to low heating density and impurities, combustion in an external combustion chamber constitutes an obvious option for the utilization of producer gas via the combustion process. This paper reviews the technical challenges and the development of the producer gas combustor. Various combustion techniques are reviewed. A stable flame combustion with low emissions (both CO and NOx) constitutes a main requirement of the producer gas combustion. Flame stabilization techniques such as swirl-vane coupled with bluff-body, swirl flow configuration, and staging combustion were successfully employed to enhance the stability and performance of the producer gas combustion. As shown in the results of the studies, the combustion process can operate in a wide range of equivalence ratios with the exhaust gas temperature >600 °C. This temperature is sufficiently hot for the power generation and heating applications. Overall, NOx and CO emissions were below 700 ppm and 1.3%, respectively. In the flameless combustion mode, ultra-low emission for both CO and NOx were recorded. However, higher emission can be found when operated at a higher thermal load combustor. Homogeneity of the thermal field and low polluting emissions make flameless combustion a promising lean and clean combustion technology. Integration of the benefits of flameless combustion and producer gas fuel is an outstanding contribution in reducing emissions and enhancing the efficiency of the combustion systems.  相似文献

In the present study, the air turbulator, which is a part of a nonpremixed burner, is investigated numerically in terms of its effects on the diffusion methane flame structure and NOX emissions. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code was used for the numerical analysis. At first, four experiments were conducted using natural gas fuel. In the experimental studies, the excess air ratio was taken constant as 1.2, while the fuel consumption rate was changed between 22 and 51 Nm3/h. After the experimental studies, the CFD studies were carried out. Pure methane was taken as fuel for the simulations. The nonpremixed combustion model with the steady laminar flamelet model (SFM) approach was used in the combustion analyses. Methane‐air extinction mechanism with 17 species and 58 reactions was used for the simulations. The results obtained from the CFD studies were confronted with the measurements of the flue gas emissions in the experimental studies. Then, a modified burner head was analysed numerically for the different air turbulator blade numbers and angles. The CFD results show that increasing the air turbulator blade number and angle causes the thermal NO emissions to be reduced in the flue gas by making the flame in the combustion chamber more uniform than the original case. This new flame structure provides better mixing of the fuel and combustion air. Thus, the diffusion flame structure in the combustion chamber takes the form of the partially premixed flame structure. The maximum reduction in the thermal NO emissions in the flue gas is achieved at 38% according to the original case.
