The most exciting and rapidly developing tools in modern society are not mechanical implements for doing physical work but software (particularly for personal computers) and communications (particularly as related to the Internet). Much of this ferment flows from the rapidly growing memory capacity and speed of computers-enhancements that permit them to run ever-larger programs. For many users, the most meaningful development in technical software has been the power of inexpensive PCs to run programs that formerly ran only on mainframes or workstations. Engineers have also benefited from the huge market for PCs and the resulting need to write software that is usable by non-techies. This requirement has promoted such software innovations as graphical user interfaces (GUIs), the ready exchange of data between applications running simultaneously and the ability to swap data with other users across the Internet. Both trends-the growing power and size of technical software for PCs and its greater ease of use-were much in evidence in 1997, and will continue into the foreseeable future  相似文献

随着Internet和软件复用技术的发展,用户根据自己的计算需求,从网上构件库中搜索构件,并由构件动态生成程序成为可能.针对这种按需计算的需求,本文提出一种在网络环境下进行程序挖掘的方法:采用智能代理分析理解用户的计算需求,从网上构件库中识别、搜索可用构件,并组装链接,形成满足用户要求的可执行程序.文中论述了程序挖掘的基本概念、基于代理的程序挖掘原型系统,并讨论了进一步的研究方向.  相似文献

This article has provided a brief overview of how the marriage of speech and language technologies with the Web is changing the way people communicate and access information. Advances are happening at a rapid pace through improved algorithms, wider penetration of the Web, availability of data, and faster computing. As the Web continues to evolve, research initiatives need to continue to address difficult challenges in areas of information mining of multimedia data, multimodal search of Web and media contents, speaker recognition for reducing Internet fraud, interactive question/answering for Web-based self-service, Web mining for knowledge discovery, two-way language translation, and Web page personalization and ranking. Progress in these areas will help to generate exciting new business opportunities for mobile Internet, secure voice print, ubiquitous multilingual communication, IPTV, globalization of customer care, and information search of massive amounts of data.  相似文献

The dawning of this millennium coincides with the start of a new epoch-that of Internet-distributed computing-and, as is typical with epochal changes, the entrenched are being uprooted. A new breed of device-the Internet appliance-is dethroning the PC, which has held sway over the computing industry for the last two decades. Microsoft Inc., the Redmond, Wash., software megalith whose Windows operating system has towered over the system software arena for the last decade, must now do battle on two fronts: at the heart of the network-the server-and at the edges, with the new Internet devices. As the number and size of Web publishers mushroom, so does the demand for servers and storage. Sales of server hardware and operating systems are growing rapidly, and Microsoft 2000, formerly known as Windows NT 5.0, must duke it out with established Unix systems and new Linux boxes. With growing reliance on the Internet for all kinds of information, computing is acquiring an unsuspected mobility. Unlike a laptop computer, which requires that the user be stationary (preferably seated) to be of use, Internet appliances free the user to work on the go, in ways not previously possible. Even as information technology reaches the next stage in its evolution, the PC has become something of a dinosaur, a metamorphosis that cannot be stopped even by Microsoft. In fact, while the outcome of its confrontation with the US Department of Justice may be to reshape the company in some way, it is the Internet that is truly restructuring Microsoft  相似文献

The lasting evolution of computing environment, software engineering and interaction methods leads to cloud computing. Cloud computing changes the configuration mode of resources on the Internet and all kinds of resources are virtualized and provided as services. Mass participation and online interaction with social annotations become usual in human daily life. People who own similar interests on the Internet may cluster naturally into scalable and boundless communities and collective intelligence will emerge. Human is taken as an intelligent computing factor, and uncertainty becomes a basic property in cloud computing. Virtualization, soft computing and granular computing will become essential features of cloud computing. Compared with the engineering technological problems of IaaS (Infrastructure as a service), PaaS (Platform as a Service) and SaaS (Software as a Service), collective intelligence and uncertain knowledge representation will be more important frontiers in cloud computing for researchers within the community of intelligence science.  相似文献

The Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta is in a unique position of having a campus located in the heart of the Lorraine region of France in the city of Metz. Since the number of faculty at GTL is limited, some courses must be offered in non-traditional formats. Due to the problems involved in shipping video tapes across the Atlantic, the Internet was considered as an alternative delivery vehicle. Initially driven by a very real and pressing need to deliver courses in a timely and effective manner across the Atlantic, Internet course delivery is now finding its way into many other programs at Georgia Tech. In this paper, we describe some of our experiences with Internet course development and delivery, and present a set of tools that we have developed for placing courses on the web easily. We will also present some of the problems and limitations with on-line course production and delivery, and speculate on the future of distance education.  相似文献

The latest math packages for engineering education offer: programming through icons; collaboration over the Internet; electronic textbooks; and free courseware on the Web. Mathematical software tools can be divided into two groups: programs that chiefly perform symbolic manipulations (also called computer algebra programs for their ability to find exact solutions to analytical expressions) and programs used primarily for large numerical calculations. But the line between these tools is blurring, for some leading vendors now produce packages that include both numerical and symbolic capabilities. Distributed computing systems and applications are not only changing the face of computing, they're also continually changing the way we live, work, and interact as a society. In recent years, the demand for educational courses in advanced computing and networking has expanded rapidly. This has led to a huge demand for Internet-based distributed computing technologies (such as Web and grid services) and applications that virtualize geographically distributed resources to enable the creation of virtual enterprises, marketplaces, and service-oriented computing industries. Although evolutionary algorithm is a powerful optimization tool, its computation cost involved in terms of time and hardware resources increases as the size or complexity of the problem increases. One promising approach to overcome this limitation is to exploit the inherent parallelism of evolutionary algorithms by creating an infrastructure necessary to support distributed evolutionary computing using existing Internet and hardware resources. This paper presents a Java-based distributed evolutionary computing software (Paladin-DEC), which enhances the concurrent processing and performance of evolutionary algorithms by allowing inter-communications of subpopulations among various computers over the Internet. Such a distributed system enables individuals to migrate among multiple subpopulations according to some patterns to induce diversity of elite individuals periodically, in a way that simulates the species evolve in natural environment. The Paladin-DEC software is capable of keeping data integrity throughout the computation, and is incorporated with the features of robustness, security, fault tolerance, and work balancing. The effectiveness and advantages of the Paladin-DEC are illustrated upon two case studies of drug scheduling in cancer chemotherapy and searching probe sets of yeast genome.  相似文献

Situated at the intersection of technology and medicine, the Internet of Things (IoT) holds the promise of addressing some of healthcare's most pressing challenges, from medical error, to chronic drug shortages, to overburdened hospital systems, to dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. However, despite considerable recent technological advances, the pace of successful implementation of promising IoT healthcare initiatives has been slow. To inspire more productive collaboration, we present here a simple—but surprisingly underrated—problem-oriented approach to developing healthcare technologies. To further assist in this effort, we reviewed the various commercial, regulatory, social/cultural, and technological factors in the development of the IoT. We propose that fog computing—a technological paradigm wherein the burden of computing is shifted from a centralized cloud server closer to the data source—offers the greatest promise for building a robust and scalable healthcare IoT ecosystem. To this end, we explore the key enabling technologies that underpin the fog architecture, from the sensing layer all the way up to the cloud. It is our hope that ongoing advances in sensing, communications, cryptography, storage, machine learning, and artificial intelligence will be leveraged in meaningful ways to generate unprecedented medical intelligence and thus drive improvements in the health of many people.  相似文献

This paper takes us on a short journey from traditional desktop computing to the three emerging dimensions of: Nomadicity (the system support needed to provide a rich set of computing and communication capabilities and services to nomads as they move from place to place in a way that is transparent, integrated, convenient and adaptive); embeddedness (small intelligent devices embedded in the physical world and connected to the Internet); and ubiquity (Internet service availability wherever the nomad travels on a global basis). These three dimensions give us a powerful system that supports global access for mobile users interacting with smart spaces. When we add intelligence distributed across this global infrastructure, we form a new “space”, which is the basis of a vision I articulated for the Internet in 1969 and which has yet to be achieved. In that vision, I foresee that the Internet will essentially be an invisible global infrastructure serving as a global nervous system for the peoples and processes of this planet.  相似文献
