We consider the adsorption of a random heteropolymer onto an interface within the model of Garel et al. [#!gareletal89!#] by taking into account random self-interactions and ternary repulsive interactions between the monomers. Within the replica trick and by using a self-consistent preaveraging procedure we map the adsorption problem onto the problem of binding state of a quantum mechanical Hamiltonian. The analysis of the latter is treated within the variational method based on the 2nd Legendre transform. Our study reveals a complex behaviour of the localization of the heteropolymer. In particular, we predict a reentrant localization transition for moderate values of the asymmetry of the distribution function of the monomer sequences along the heteropolymer. A soft bead (radius R b) is pressed with a force F against a hydrophobic glass plate through a water drop (“wet” JKR set-up). We observe with a fast camera the growth of the contact zone bridging the rubber bead to the glass. Depending on the approach velocity V, two regimes are observed : i) at large V a liquid film is squeezed at the interface and dewets by nucleation and growth of a dry contact; ii) at low velocities, the bead remains nearly spherical. As it comes into contact, the rubber bead spreads on the glass with a characteristic time (in the range of one millisecond) τ ≈ ηR b 2/F, where η is the liquid viscosity. The laws of spreading are interpreted by a balance of global mechanical and viscous forces. We study by theoretical analysis and by direct numerical simulation the dynamics of a wide class of asynchronous stochastic systems composed of many autocatalytic degrees of freedom. We describe the generic emergence of truncated power laws in the size distribution of their individual elements. The exponents α of these power laws are time independent and depend only on the way the elements with very small values are treated. These truncated power laws determine the collective time evolution of the system. In particular the global stochastic fluctuations of the system differ from the normal Gaussian noise according to the time and size scales at which these fluctuations are considered. We describe the ranges in which these fluctuations are parameterized respectively by: the Lévy regime α < 2, the power law decay with large exponent ( α > 2), and the exponential decay. Finally we relate these results to the large exponent power laws found in the actual behavior of the stock markets and to the exponential cut-off detected in certain recent measurement. We consider the optimal paths in a d-dimensional lattice, where the bonds have isotropically correlated random weights. These paths can be interpreted as the ground state configuration of a simplified polymer model in a random potential. We study how the universal scaling exponents, the roughness and the energy fluctuation exponent, depend on the strength of the disorder correlations. Our numerical results using Dijkstra's algorithm to determine the optimal path in directed as well as undirected lattices indicate that the correlations become relevant if they decay with distance slower than 1/r in d = 2 and 3. We show that the exponent relation 2ν - ω = 1 holds at least in d = 2 even in case of correlations. Both in two and three dimensions, overhangs turn out to be irrelevant even in the presence of strong disorder correlations. The classical treatment of quasi-spherical vesicle undulations has, in the present work, been reviewed and extended to systems, which are affected by a gravitational field caused by a density difference across the membrane. The effects have been studied by the use of perturbation theory leading to corrections to the mean shape and the fluctuation correlation matrix. These corrections have been included in an analytical expression for the flicker spectrum to probe how the experimentally accessible spectrum changes with gravity. The results are represented in terms of the gravitational parameter, g 0 = ΔρgR 4/κ. The contributions from gravity are in most experimental situations small and thus negligible, but for values of g0 above a certain limit, the perturbational corrections must be included. Expressions for the relative error on the flicker spectrum have been worked out, so that it is possible to define the regime where gravity is negligible. An upper limit of g0 has also been identified, where the error in all modes of the flicker spectrum is significant due to distortion of the mean shape. We propose a payoff function extending Minority Games (MG) that captures the competition between agents to make money. In contrast with previous MG, the best strategies are not always targeting the minority but are shifting opportunistically between the minority and the majority. The emergent properties of the price dynamics and of the wealth of agents are strikingly different from those found in MG. As the memory of agents is increased, we find a phase transition between a self-sustained speculative phase in which a “stubborn majority” of agents effectively collaborate to arbitrage a market-maker for their mutual benefit and a phase where the market-maker always arbitrages the agents. A subset of agents exhibit a sustained non-equilibrium risk-return profile. We introduce a solid-on-solid growth process which evolves by random deposition of dimers, surface diffusion, and evaporation of monomers from the edges of plateaus. It is shown that the model exhibits a robust transition from a smooth to a rough phase. The roughening transition is driven by an absorbing phase transition at the bottom layer of the interface, which displays the same type of critical behavior as the pair contact process with diffusion 2A↦3A, 2A↦. According to recent findings [#!bouchaud!#,#!stanley!#], empirical covariance matrices deduced from financial return series contain such a high amount of noise that, apart from a few large eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenvectors, their structure can essentially be regarded as random. In [#!bouchaud!#], e.g., it is reported that about 94% of the spectrum of these matrices can be fitted by that of a random matrix drawn from an appropriately chosen ensemble. In view of the fundamental role of covariance matrices in the theory of portfolio optimization as well as in industry-wide risk management practices, we analyze the possible implications of this effect. Simulation experiments with matrices having a structure such as described in [#!bouchaud!#,#!stanley!#] lead us to the conclusion that in the context of the classical portfolio problem (minimizing the portfolio variance under linear constraints) noise has relatively little effect. To leading order the solutions are determined by the stable, large eigenvalues, and the displacement of the solution (measured in variance) due to noise is rather small: depending on the size of the portfolio and on the length of the time series, it is of the order of 5 to 15%. The picture is completely different, however, if we attempt to minimize the variance under non-linear constraints, like those that arise e.g. in the problem of margin accounts or in international capital adequacy regulation. In these problems the presence of noise leads to a serious instability and a high degree of degeneracy of the solutions. Received 31 December 2001  相似文献

We studied biomembrane adhesion using the micropipet aspiration technique. Adhesion was caused by contact site A, a laterally mobile and highly specific cell adhesion molecule from Dictyostelium discoideum, reconstituted in lipid vesicles of DOPC (L-α-dioleoylphosphatidylcholine) with an addition of 5 mol % DOPE-PEG2000 (1,2-diacyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylethanolamine-N-[poly(ethyleneglycol) 2000]). The “fuzzy” membrane mimics the cellular plasma membrane including the glycocalyx. We found adhesion and subsequent receptor migration into the contact zone. Using membrane tension jumps to probe the equation of state of the two-dimensional “gas” of bound receptor pairs within the contact zone, we found strong, attractive lateral interactions. We study the general problem of the friction felt by a spherical solid particle which moves parallel to the membrane of a spherical vesicle. Experiments are carried out with SOPC vesicles at room temperature, with different particle and vesicle sizes. Experimental data show considerable finite-size effects whenever the particle is not very small compared to the vesicle. These effects are found consistent with the hydrodynamical theory of the vesicle-particle problem. This agreement allows for a “robust” determination of membrane viscosity, independently of particle and vesicle sizes. Received 4 January 1999 and Received in final form 11 May 1999  相似文献

The mean field approach of glassy dynamics successfully describes systems which are out-of-equilibrium in their low temperature phase. In some cases an aging behaviour is found, with no stationary regime ever reached. In the presence of dissipative forces however, the dynamics is indeed stationary, but still out-of-equilibrium, as inferred by a significant violation of the fluctuation dissipation theorem. The mean field dynamics of a particle in a random but short-range correlated environment, offers the opportunity of observing both the aging and driven stationary regimes. Using a geometrical approach previously introduced by the author, we study here the relation between these two situations, in the pure relaxational limit, i.e. the zero temperature case. In the stationary regime, the velocity (v)-force (F) characteristics is a power law vF 4, while the characteristic times scale like powers of v, in agreement with an early proposal by Horner. The cross-over between the aging, linear-response regime and the non-linear stationary regime is smooth, and we propose a parametrization of the correlation functions valid in both cases, by means of an “effective time”. We conclude that aging and non-linear response are dual manifestations of a single out-of-equilibrium state, which might be a generic situation. We consider the shape of crystals which are soft in the sense that their elastic modulus μ is small compared to their surface tension γ, more precisely μa < γ where a is the lattice spacing. We show that their surface steps penetrate inside the crystal as edge dislocations. As a consequence, these steps are broad with a small energy which we calculate. We also calculate the elastic interaction between steps a distance d apart, which is a 1/d 2 repulsion. We finally calculate the roughening temperatures of successive facets in order to compare with the remarkable shapes of lyotropic crystals recently observed by Pieranski et al. [#!Pieranski!#,#!EPJ!#]. Good agreement is found. Received 25 June 2001  相似文献

Taking advantage of the great number of bent-core or “banana" compounds synthesized and studied in the laboratory, we describe their behaviour under the application of an external electric field. If the field were a static one, we would work within the frame of an equilibrium phase diagram in a (field E, temperature T) space where some phases would be simple dielectrics and others ferroelectric ones with a macroscopic polarization, either spontaneous or induced by the field. In this paper, we deal with the basic responses of “banana” liquid crystals under the application of a low frequency (1 to 100 Hz) AC field. Firstly square-wave voltages allow us to locate the phase boundary between dielectric (at lower field) and ferroelectric phases (higher field) at a given temperature and field threshold. Then we apply slowly varying AC voltages with shapes like triangle or “triple-plateau” to check out the stability of the induced ferroelectric phase versus field removal. Three behaviours are encountered, the unstable one (short lifetime of the high-field ferroelectric phase) where the macroscopic polarization is destroyed and then rebuilt in the opposite direction during each half period and usually called “antiferroelectric”; the stable one (long lifetime) with a polarization that rotates at constant modulus which is labeled as “ferroelectric” and a new one where the macroscopic polarization is proportional to the applied fied, we named this behaviour as “superparaelectric”. Let us stress that these observations apply to the ferroelectric phases of the (E, T) phase diagram not to the zero field (0,T) phases observed in the usual phase characterization experiments except for an eventual spontaneous ferroelectric phase. Correlations in the motion of reptating polymers in a melt are investigated by means of Monte Carlo simulations of the three-dimensional slithering-snake version of the bond-fluctuation model. Surprisingly, the slithering-snake dynamics becomes inconsistent with classical reptation predictions at high chain overlap (created either by chain length N or by the volume fraction φ of occupied lattice sites), where the relaxation times increase much faster than expected. This is due to the anomalous curvilinear diffusion in a finite time window whose upper bound (N) is set by the density of chain ends φ/N. Density fluctuations created by passing chain ends allow a reference polymer to break out of the local cage of immobile obstacles created by neighboring chains. The dynamics of dense solutions of “snakes” at t ≪ is identical to that of a benchmark system where all chains but one are frozen. We demonstrate that the subdiffusive dynamical regime is caused by the slow creeping of a chain out of its correlation hole. Our results are in good qualitative agreement with the activated-reptation scheme proposed recently by Semenov and Rubinstein (Eur. Phys. J. B, 1 (1998) 87). Additionally, we briefly comment on the relevance of local relaxation pathways within a slithering-snake scheme. Our preliminary results suggest that a judicious choice of the ratio of local to slithering-snake moves is crucial to equilibrate a melt of long chains efficiently. We studied the formation of actin scaffolds in giant vesicles of dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC). Polymerization of actin was induced at low ionic strength through ionophore-mediated influx of Mg2+ (2 mM). The spatial organization of the filamentous actin was visualized by confocal and epifluorescence microscopy as a function of the filaments length and membrane composition, by including various amounts of cholesterol or lipids with neutral and positively charged polyethyleneglycol headgroups (PEG lipopolymers). In vesicles of pure DMPC, the newly polymerized actin adsorbs to the membrane and forms a thin shell. In the presence of 2.5 mol% lipopolymers or of cholesterol at a molar fraction x = 0.37, formation of a thin adsorbed film is impeded. A fuzzy cortex is predominantly formed in vesicles of diameter d smaller than the filament persistence length ( d ⩽ 15μm) while for larger vesicles a homogeneous network formation is favoured in the bulk of the vesicle. The fuzzy-cortex formation is interpreted as a consequence of the reduction of the bending energy if the actin filaments accumulate close to the vesicle wall. The relationship between a microscopic parameter p, that is related to the probability of choosing a mechanism of deposition, and the stochastic equation for the interface's evolution is studied for two different models. It is found that in one model, that is similar to ballistic deposition, the corresponding stochastic equation can be represented by a Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation where both λ and ν depend on p in the following way: ν(p) = νp and λ(p) = λp 3/2. Furthermore, in the other studied model, which is similar to random deposition with relaxation, the stochastic equation can be represented by an Edwards-Wilkinson (EW) equation where ν depends on p according to ν(p) = νp 2. It is expected that these results will help to find a framework for the development of stochastic equations starting from microscopic details of growth models.
