Summary The retina of the gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) contains rods and cones in a ratio of about 23. The spectral mechanisms in this retina were examined in behavioral and electrophysiological experiments. Tests of color vision revealed that this animal has a spectral neutral point at about 500 nm and, thus, dichromatic color vision. Recordings made from single optic nerve fibers and results obtained from an analysis of the flicker photometric electroretinogram (ERG) indicated that vision in the gray squirrel is based on three spectral mechanisms. One of these, presumably rod-based, has peak sensitivity at about 502 nm. The other two mechanisms reflect the presence of two classes of cone having average peak sensitivity of about 444 nm and 543 nm.  相似文献

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from 71 Columbian ground squirrels (Spermophilus columbianus) collected in 12 locations in western Canada were assayed for restriction-site variation with 10 endonucleases. Five of these endonucleases revealed variant patterns, and the composite genotypes were used to develop a linear transformation series among the mtDNA genotypes. Two of the four clones had a wide distribution, while the remaining two clones were geographically restricted. The mtDNA of Columbian ground squirrels was also compared to two other species of Sciuridae: Richardson's ground squirrels (S. richardsonii) and Arctic ground squirrels (S. parryii). Calculation of divergences from fragment length and restriction-site data indicated that Arctic ground squirrels and Richardson's ground squirrels were more closely related to each other than either was to Columbian ground squirrels. The transformation series among clones within the Columbian ground squirrels was rooted using Richardson's and Arctic ground squirrels as out-groups. From these data, we conclude that the colonization by female founders of Columbian ground squirrel populations occurred after deglaciation along the eastern ranges of the Rocky Mountains, while colonies on the western ranges may have been present before extensive deglaciation occurred, having existed in refugia in northwestern Alberta.  相似文献

A recent examination of color vision in the ringtail lemur produced evidence that these prosimians could make color discriminations consistent with a diagnosis of trichromatic color vision. However, it was unclear if this behavior reflected the presence of three classes of cone or whether lemurs might be able to utilize signals from rods in conjunction with those from only two classes of cone. To resolve that issue, spectral sensitivity functions were obtained from ringtail lemurs (Lemur catta) and brown lemurs (Eulemur fulvus) using a noninvasive electrophysiological procedure, electroretinographic flicker photometry. Results from experiments involving chromatic adaptation indicate that these lemurs routinely have only a single class of cone photopigment in the middle to long wavelengths (peak sensitivity of about 545 nm); they also have a short-wavelengthsensitive cone pigment with peak of about 437 nm. The earlier behavioral results are suggested to have resulted from the ability of lemurs to jointly utilize signals from rods and cones. The cone pigment complements of these lemurs differ distinctly from those seen among the anthropoids. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Summary Spectral sensitivity curves were measured for bluegills using a heart-rate conditioning technique. A mean spectral sensitivity curve (n=3) determined using a white background exhibited two main peaks, indicating the possible presence of two cone photoreceptors mechanisms. Chromatic adaptation was used to separate the contribution of the cone mechanisms to sensitivity. Peak sensitivities were located at 540 and 640 nm against red and blue-green backgrounds, respectively.Light adaptation curves were measured for each cone mechanism indicating that these cone mechanisms have their greatest contrast sensitivity at higher background intensities. Spatial summation properties were also measured for each cone mechanism revealing a critical diameter (summation area) of 5° for both mechanisms.Microspectrophotometric (MSP) measurements were made on individuals from the same group of bluegills used in the above experiments. The results showed the presence of two cone types: single green-sensitive cones with an average max of 536 nm (SD±1.8nm,n=11) and twin redsensitive cones with an average max of 620 nm (SD ±1.9 nm,n=11).The correlation between the visual pigment absorption spectra and action spectra of the two cone mechanisms indicate a sound physiological basis for sensitivity. The functional properties of the two cone mechanisms, will be discussed in relation to the ecological and behavioral aspects of bluegills.Abbreviation TVI threshold vs intensity  相似文献

Microsatellite loci were developed from hoary marmots (Marmota caligata) to aid in the investigation of the social structure and mating system of this species. Seven of the microsatellite loci developed were found to be moderately polymorphic with between two and seven alleles per locus. In addition to the microsatellites developed in hoary marmots we also tested markers developed for other scuirids, namely European alpine marmots (M. marmota), Columbian ground squirrels (Spermophilus columbianus) and European ground squirrels (S. citellus). Of these markers, 13 were polymorphic when amplified in hoary marmots with between two and nine alleles per locus.  相似文献

Sixteen percent of California ground squirrels (Spermophilus beecheyi) were found to be shedding an average of 53,875 Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts/g of feces. Male squirrels had a higher prevalence and higher intensity of shedding than did female squirrels. The majority of C. parvum isolates matched a bovine-murine genotype, with a few isolates resembling a porcine genotype. Higher intensities of shedding by males may enhance dissemination and genotypic mixing of this protozoa given males' proclivity to disperse to nonnatal colonies.  相似文献

The visual receptors in the retina of the passeriform bird Leiothrix lutea were examined microspectro-photometrically. The rods had a maximum absorbance close to 500 nm. Four spectrally different classes of single cone were identified with typical combinations of photopigments and oil droplets: a long-wave sensitive cone with a photopigment P568 and a droplet with a cut-off wavelength at 564 nm, a middle-wave sensitive cone with a P499 and a droplet with a cut-off at 506 nm, a short-wave sensitive cone with a P454 and a droplet with maximum absorbance below 410nm and an ultraviolet sensitive cone with a P355 and a transparent droplet. Double cones possessed a P568 in both the principal and accessory members. A pale droplet with variable absorbance (maximal at about 420 nm) was associated with the principal member whereas the ellipsoid region of the accessory member contained only low concentrations of carotenoid. The effective spectral sensitivities of the different cone classes were calculated from the characteristic combinations of oil droplets and photopigments and corrected for the absorbance of the ocular media. Comparison of these results with the behavioural spectral sensitivity function of Leiothrix lutea suggests that the increment threshold photopic spectral sensitivity of this avian species is mediated by the 4 single cone classes modified by neural opponent mechanisms.Abbreviations LWS long wave sensitive - MWS middle wave sensitive - SWS short wave sensitive (cones)  相似文献

Spectral sensitivity functions of a passeriform bird, the Red-billed Leiothrix Leiothrix lutea (Timalidae) were determined in a behavioural test under different background illuminations.
1.  With photopic illumination the spectral sensitivity of Leiothrix lutea covered the measured range from 320 nm to 680 nm. Four peaks of spectral sensitivity were found: a UV (370 nm), a blue (460 nm), a green (530 nm) and a red (620 nm) sensitivity peak. The spectral sensitivity was highest in the UV and decreased (over the blue and the green peak) towards the red sensitivity peak. The 4 peaks of spectral sensitivity point to 4 underlying cone mechanisms under photopic illumination and thus to a probably tetrachromatic colour vision of Leiothrix lutea.
2.  With mesopic illumination the bird's spectral sensitivity covered the measured range from 320 nm to 680 nm. Neural interactions between cone and rod sensitivities are likely to determine this function. The increased overall sensitivity and a dominant sensitivity peak at 500 nm point to a typical rhodopsin as the likely rod photopigment.
3.  Different aspects of the biological significance of the high UV sensitivity are discussed.

Pineal melatonin levels were compared in laboratory-raised or wild-captured 13-lined ground squirrels (Spermophilus tridecemlineatus) that were either exposed to 10 h of darkness at night or to light which had an irradiance of 400 μW/cm2. In laboratory-born squirrels the period of darkness was associated with a gradual rise in pineal melatonin levels with peak values being reached at 0200 h, 6 h after darkness onset. Thereafter, melatonin levels decreased and were back to low daytime levels by 0800 h, 2 h after light onset. The exposure of laboratory-raised animals to an irradiance of 400 μW/cm2 during the night totally prevented the nocturnal rise in pineal melatonin levels in these animals. In wild-captured ground squirrels the period of darkness at night was associated with a rapid rise in pineal melatonin such that by 2200 h, 2 h after lights out, peak melatonin values were already attained; additionally, melatonin levels remained high throughout the period of darkness but returned to daytime values by 0800 h. Exposure of wild-captured squirrels to a light irradiance of 400 μW/cm2 during the normal dark period was completely incapable of suppressing pineal melatonin levels. The difference in the sensitivity of the pineal gland of laboratory-raised and wild-captured ground squirrels may relate to their previous lighting history.  相似文献

Electroretinogram (ERG) flicker photometry was used to study the spectral mechanisms in the retinas of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and fallow deer (Dama dama). In addition to having a rod pigment with maximum sensitivity (max) of about 497 nm, both species appear to have two classes of photopic receptors. They share in common a short-wavelength-sensitive cone mechanism having max in the region of 450–460 nm. Each also has a cone having peak sensitivity in the middle wavelengths, but these differ slightly for the two species. In white-tailed deer the max of this cone is about 537 nm; for the fallow deer the average max value for this mechanism was 542 nm. Deer resemble other ungulates and many other types of mammal in having two classes of cone pigment and, thus, the requisite retinal basis for dichromatic color vision.Abbreviations ERG electroretinogram - LWS long wavelength sensitive - MWS middle wavelength sensitive - SWS short wavelength sensitive  相似文献

Factors affecting the population density and daily pattern of activity of the European ground squirrelSpermophilus citellus (Linnaeus, 1766) were studied in two habitats of the Kiskunság National Park, Hungary. One habitat was dominated by sandy and the other by salty grassland. Population densities were estimated by counting ground squirrel burrow entrances in sample areas with different microhabitat characteristics. Three categories (elevated, level and depressed) were used to describe the spatial distribution of burrows according to microtopography. Daily activity was evaluated by counting the ground squirrels visible on the surface and registering their alarm calls. The highest proportion of ground squirrel holes was found on elevations in the two habitats. Ground squirrels showed a similar daily activity pattern in different areas and in the same season in consecutive years. The daily activity consisted in a morning peak, a midday pause and a less regular afternoon activity period. Human activity had no direct effect on the daily activity pattern. Emission of alarm calls peaked in June, when litters emerge from the maternal burrows.  相似文献

Extracellular microelectrode recordings were made from ganglion cells of the intact, in situ eyes of adult common domestic cats. Three different photopic systems, with peak spectral sensitivities at 450, 500, and 556 nm, were observed. All ganglion cells received input from a cone system with a peak spectral sensitivity of 556 nm. The blue-sensitive cone system was observed in about one-half of the ganglion cells studied. In each case the 450-nm cone system contributed to only one functional type of response, either ON or OFF, in the same cell. The other two photopic systems most often contributed to both the ON and OFF responses of an individual ganglion cell. In four cases the 450-nm cone system mediated responses that were opponent to those of the other two photopic systems. The third photopic mechanism has a peak spectral sensitivity at 500 nm and contributed to most receptive field surrounds and many receptive field centers. It is distinguished from the rod system by the occurrence of a break in both dark-adaptation curves and increment-sensitivity curves. No apparent differences in receptive field cone contributions between brisk-sustained and brisk-transient cells were seen.  相似文献

Rod and cone visual pigments of 11 marine carnivores were evaluated. Rod, middle/long-wavelength sensitive (M/L) cone, and short-wavelength sensitive (S) cone opsin (if present) sequences were obtained from retinal mRNA. Spectral sensitivity was inferred through evaluation of known spectral tuning residues. The rod pigments of all but one of the pinnipeds were similar to those of the sea otter, polar bear, and most other terrestrial carnivores with spectral peak sensitivities (λmax) of 499 or 501 nm. Similarly, the M/L cone pigments of the pinnipeds, polar bear, and otter had inferred λmax of 545 to 560 nm. Only the rod opsin sequence of the elephant seal had sensitivity characteristic of adaptation for vision in the marine environment, with an inferred λmax of 487 nm. No evidence of S cones was found for any of the pinnipeds. The polar bear and otter had S cones with inferred λmax of ∼440 nm. Flicker-photometric ERG was additionally used to examine the in situ sensitivities of three species of pinniped. Despite the use of conditions previously shown to evoke cone responses in other mammals, no cone responses could be elicited from any of these pinnipeds. Rod photoreceptor responses for all three species were as predicted by the genetic data.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available for this article at and is accessible for authorized users.  相似文献

Only two of the four cone opsin gene families found in vertebrates are represented in contemporary eutherian and marsupial species. Recent genetic studies of two species of South American marsupial detected the presence of representatives from two of the classes of cone opsin genes and the structures of these genes predicted cone pigments with respective peaks in the ultraviolet and long-wavelength portions of the spectrum. The Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana), a profoundly nocturnal animal, is the only marsupial species found in North America. The prospects for cone-based vision in this species were examined through recordings of the electroretinogram (ERG), a commonly examined retinal response to photic stimulation. Recorded under flickering-light conditions that elicit signals from cone photoreceptors, the spectral sensitivity of the opossum eye is well accounted for by contributions from the presence of a single cone pigment having peak absorption at 561–562 nm. A series of additional experiments that employed various chromatic adaptation paradigms were conducted in a search for possible contributions from a second (short-wavelength sensitive) cone pigment. We found no evidence that such a mechanism contributes to the ERG in this marsupial.  相似文献

This paper presents systematically collected field data on what transpires between free-living rattlesnakes (Crotalus viridis oreganus) and individuals of an important prey species, California ground squirrels (Spermophilus beecheyi). In the course of two field seasons we discovered that rattlesnakes and California ground squirrels can engage in at least six different episode classes: snake watching, snake following, inspecting/probing coiled snakes, interaction, rattlesnake approaching squirrel and envenomation. If a rattlesnake is moving directly toward a squirrel and is within 3 m of its burrow an interaction may develop, but more commonly it does not. Instead of engaging the snake, the squirrels seemed to try to remain stationary in the face of the snake's advance, as if to minimize affording the snake information about the nursery burrow location. The rattlesnakes in turn behaved as though they were using the location of the squirrels that resisted moving away from their advance as the hub of a radial search pattern. We argue that if the squirrel engages the snake before it discovers the burrow, the location of the nursery burrow may be revealed and the pups' vulnerability actually increased.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In most mammals, adults produce relatively low frequency vocalizations compared to those of juveniles. This rule is not maintained however at least in four species of ground squirrels, whose juveniles call at the adult's fundamental frequency. These findings have been obtained however with separate sets of juveniles and adults and no data is available concerning the ontogeny linked to these differences. Here we analyze the acoustic structure of alarm calls of the same Yellow Spermophilus fulvus and Speckled S. suslicus ground squirrel individuals, recorded as pups and as adults after hibernation. We found the fundamental frequencies of adults within the same frequency ranges as those of pups, in spite of the significant difference in body mass. In ground squirrels, severing the relationship between body size and call frequency removes some vocal cues to age. We discuss some functional hypotheses advanced to explain manipulations with fundamental frequencies in ground squirrels and other animals, and suggest the lack of data for discussing the mechanisms of such vocal tuning.  相似文献

Summary The spectral sensitivities of individually stimulated ommatidia in the compound eye of Daphnia magna were measured using a fast spectral scan voltage-clamp technique with extracellular recording. Chromatic adaptation was used to reveal the contributions of individual spectral classes of photoreceptors to the ommatidial sensitivity. Ommatidia in the dorsal and ventral regions of the compound eye were tested. Four spectral classes of photoreceptors were found in each ommatidium, among them a previously undetected class with peak sensitivity in the ultraviolet. The wavelengths of peak sensitivity were at 348, 434, 525, and 608 nm for the dorsal ommatidia. The three longer wavelength classes agreed well with those found previously by intracellular recording (Schehr 1984). Only small differences in wavelength and magnitude of peak sensitivity were found between the four classes in the dorsal versus ventral ommatidia.  相似文献

We studied daily rhythmicity of body temperature (T b) before and during hibernation in Anatolian ground squirrels (Spermophilus xanthoprymnus) under natural and laboratory conditions using surgically implanted temperature loggers. Under both conditions, robust daily T b rhythmicity with parameters comparable to those of other ground squirrel species was observed before but not during hibernation. Euthermic animals had robust daily T b rhythms with a mean of 37.0°C and a range of excursion of approximately 4°C. No T b rhythm was detected during torpor bouts, either because T b rhythmicity was absent or because the daily range of excursion was smaller than 0.2°C. The general patterns of hibernation that we observed in Anatolian ground squirrels were similar to those previously observed by other investigators in other species of ground squirrels.  相似文献

Summary This study reports photopic spectral sensitivity curves (351–709 nm) for four individual roach,Rutilus rutilus, determined by two choice appetitive training. All four curves show four sensitivity maxima at 361–398 nm, 421–448 nm, 501–544 nm and 634–666 nm which are related to the four known roach photopic visual pigments (Avery et al. 1982). The overall shape of the curves at long wavelengths indicates inhibitory interactions between the red and green cone mechanisms. That the high behavioural sensitivity in the UV is caused by a specific ultraviolet visual pigment and is not due to aberrant stimulation of the other cone types is shown by the redetermination of spectral sensitivity at short wavelengths (351–501 nm) following the selective bleaching of the three longer wavelength visual pigments. This depresses the blue sensitivity to a greater degree than the relatively unaffected UV sensitivity maximum. Spectral transmission data from two corneas and four lenses show that they transmit considerable amounts of light in the near UV.  相似文献

Spectral sensitivity was measured in air in the light adapted state in two harbor seals and a South American sea lion using a behavioral training technique. Increment thresholds were determined in a spectral range from 390 nm to 670 nm in a simultaneous two‐choice discrimination task. The spectral sensitivity curves show two maxima in sensitivity, one main peak with a maximum around 500 nm in the harbor seal and around 550 nm in the South American sea lion, and a second, smaller peak with a maximum in the range of 410 nm in both species. The broad shape and the position of the maximum of the spectral sensitivity curve of the harbor seals suggests that even under photopic conditions both rods and cones are contributing to the measurements since harbor seals possess only one cone type. The maximum sensitivity in the green part of the spectrum may indicate an adaptation to a specific underwater environment.  相似文献
