An edge coloring of a graph G=(V,E) is a function c:E→ℕ that assigns a color c(e) to each edge eE such that c(e)≠c(e′) whenever e and e′ have a common endpoint. Denoting S v (G,c) the set of colors assigned to the edges incident to a vertex vV, and D v (G,c) the minimum number of integers which must be added to S v (G,c) to form an interval, the deficiency D(G,c) of an edge coloring c is defined as the sum ∑ vV D v (G,c), and the span of c is the number of colors used in c. The problem of finding, for a given graph, an edge coloring with a minimum deficiency is NP-hard. We give new lower bounds on the minimum deficiency of an edge coloring and on the span of edge colorings with minimum deficiency. We also propose a tabu search algorithm to solve the minimum deficiency problem and report experiments on various graph instances, some of them having a known optimal deficiency.  相似文献

This paper studies the group testing problem in graphs as follows. Given a graph G=(V,E), determine the minimum number t(G) such that t(G) tests are sufficient to identify an unknown edge e with each test specifies a subset XV and answers whether the unknown edge e is in G[X] or not. Damaschke proved that ⌈log 2 e(G)⌉≤t(G)≤⌈log 2 e(G)⌉+1 for any graph G, where e(G) is the number of edges of G. While there are infinitely many complete graphs that attain the upper bound, it was conjectured by Chang and Hwang that the lower bound is attained by all bipartite graphs. Later, they proved that the conjecture is true for complete bipartite graphs. Chang and Juan verified the conjecture for bipartite graphs G with e(G)≤24 or for k≥5. This paper proves the conjecture for bipartite graphs G with e(G)≤25 or for k≥6. Dedicated to Professor Frank K. Hwang on the occasion of his 65th birthday. It is well known that if G is a multigraph then χ′(G)≥χ*(G):=max {Δ(G),Γ(G)}, where χ′(G) is the chromatic index of G, χ*(G) is the fractional chromatic index of G, Δ(G) is the maximum degree of G, and Γ(G)=max {2|E(G[U])|/(|U|−1):UV(G),|U|≥3, |U| is odd}. The conjecture that χ′(G)≤max {Δ(G)+1,⌈Γ(G)⌉} was made independently by Goldberg (Discret. Anal. 23:3–7, 1973), Anderson (Math. Scand. 40:161–175, 1977), and Seymour (Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. 38:423–460, 1979). Using a probabilistic argument Kahn showed that for any c>0 there exists D>0 such that χ′(G)≤χ*(G)+c χ*(G) when χ*(G)>D. Nishizeki and Kashiwagi proved this conjecture for multigraphs G with χ′(G)>(11Δ(G)+8)/10; and Scheide recently improved this bound to χ′(G)>(15Δ(G)+12)/14. We prove this conjecture for multigraphs G with $\chi'(G)>\lfloor\Delta(G)+\sqrt{\Delta(G)/2}\rfloor$\chi'(G)>\lfloor\Delta(G)+\sqrt{\Delta(G)/2}\rfloor , improving the above mentioned results. As a consequence, for multigraphs G with $\chi'(G)>\Delta(G)+\sqrt {\Delta(G)/2}$\chi'(G)>\Delta(G)+\sqrt {\Delta(G)/2} the answer to a 1964 problem of Vizing is in the affirmative.  相似文献

An edge-colored graph G is rainbow connected if any two vertices are connected by a path whose edges have distinct colors. The rainbow connection of a connected graph G, denoted rc(G), is the smallest number of colors that are needed in order to make G rainbow connected. In the first result of this paper we prove that computing rc(G) is NP-Hard solving an open problem from Caro et al. (Electron. J. Comb. 15, 2008, Paper R57). In fact, we prove that it is already NP-Complete to decide if rc(G)=2, and also that it is NP-Complete to decide whether a given edge-colored (with an unbounded number of colors) graph is rainbow connected. On the positive side, we prove that for every ε>0, a connected graph with minimum degree at least ε n has bounded rainbow connection, where the bound depends only on ε, and a corresponding coloring can be constructed in polynomial time. Additional non-trivial upper bounds, as well as open problems and conjectures are also presented.  相似文献

A cyclic edge-cut of a graph G is an edge set, the removal of which separates two cycles. If G has a cyclic edge-cut, then it is called cyclically separable. For a cyclically separable graph G, the cyclic edge-connectivity λ c (G) is the cardinality of a minimum cyclic edge-cut of G. We call a graph super cyclically edge-connected, if the removal of any minimum cyclic edge-cut results in a component which is a shortest cycle. In this paper, we show that a connected vertex-transitive or edge-transitive graph is super cyclically edge-connected if either G is cubic with girth g(G)≥7, or G has minimum degree δ(G)≥4 and girth g(G)≥6.  相似文献

This paper considers the NP-hard graph problem of determining a maximum cardinality subset of vertices inducing a k-regular subgraph. For any graph G, this maximum will be denoted by α k (G). From a well known Motzkin-Straus result, a relationship is deduced between α k (G) and the independence number α(G). Next, it is proved that the upper bounds υ k (G) introduced in Cardoso et al. (J. Comb. Optim., 14, 455–463, 2007) can easily be computed from υ 0(G), for any positive integer k. This relationship also allows one to present an alternative proof of the Hoffman bound extension introduced in the above paper. The paper continues with the introduction of a new upper bound on α k (G) improving υ k (G). Due to the difficulty of computing this improved bound, two methods are provided for approximating it. Finally, some computational experiments which were performed to compare all bounds studied are reported.  相似文献

On backbone coloring of graphs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Let G be a graph and H a subgraph of G. A backbone-k-coloring of (G,H) is a mapping f: V(G)→{1,2,…,k} such that |f(u)−f(v)|≥2 if uvE(H) and |f(u)−f(v)|≥1 if uvE(G)\E(H). The backbone chromatic number of (G,H) is the smallest integer k such that (G,H) has a backbone-k-coloring. In this paper, we characterize the backbone chromatic number of Halin graphs G=TC with respect to given spanning trees T. Also we study the backbone coloring for other special graphs such as complete graphs, wheels, graphs with small maximum average degree, graphs with maximum degree 3, etc.  相似文献

Let G=(V,E) be a connected multigraph, whose edges are associated with labels specified by an integer-valued function ℒ:E→ℕ. In addition, each label ∈ℕ has a non-negative cost c(). The minimum label spanning tree problem (MinLST) asks to find a spanning tree in G that minimizes the overall cost of the labels used by its edges. Equivalently, we aim at finding a minimum cost subset of labels I⊆ℕ such that the edge set {eE:ℒ(e)∈I} forms a connected subgraph spanning all vertices. Similarly, in the minimum label s t path problem (MinLP) the goal is to identify an st path minimizing the combined cost of its labels. The main contributions of this paper are improved approximation algorithms and hardness results for MinLST and MinLP.  相似文献

Imagine a large building with many corridors. A robot cleans these corridors in a greedy fashion, the next corridor cleaned is always the dirtiest to which it is incident. We determine bounds on the minimum s(G) and maximum S(G) number of time steps (over all edge weightings) before every edge of a graph G has been cleaned. We show that Eulerian graphs have a self-stabilizing property that holds for any initial edge weighting: after the initial cleaning of all edges, all subsequent cleanings require s(G) time steps. Finally, we show the only self-stabilizing trees are a subset of the superstars.  相似文献

A set S of vertices of a graph G=(V,E) without isolated vertex is a total dominating set if every vertex of V(G) is adjacent to some vertex in S. The total domination number γ t (G) is the minimum cardinality of a total dominating set of G. The total domination subdivision number sdgt(G)\mathrm {sd}_{\gamma_{t}}(G) is the minimum number of edges that must be subdivided (each edge in G can be subdivided at most once) in order to increase the total domination number. In this paper we prove that sdgt(G) £ gt(G)+1\mathrm {sd}_{\gamma_{t}}(G)\leq\gamma_{t}(G)+1 for some classes of graphs.  相似文献

For a permutation f of the vertex set V(G) of a connected graph G, let δ f (x,y)=|d(x,y)−d(f(x),f(y))|. Define the displacement δ f (G) of G with respect to f to be the sum of δ f (x,y) over all unordered pairs {x,y} of distinct vertices of G. Let π(G) denote the smallest positive value of δ f (G) among the n! permutations f of V(G). In this note, we determine all trees T with π(T)=2 or 4. Dedicated to Professor Frank K. Adjacent vertex distinguishing total colorings of outerplanar graphs   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
An adjacent vertex distinguishing total coloring of a graph G is a proper total coloring of G such that any pair of adjacent vertices are incident to distinct sets of colors. The minimum number of colors required for an adjacent vertex distinguishing total coloring of G is denoted by χ a (G). In this paper, we characterize completely the adjacent vertex distinguishing total chromatic number of outerplanar graphs.  相似文献

Given a graph G=(V,E) with node weight w:VR + and a subset SV, find a minimum total weight tree interconnecting all nodes in S. This is the node-weighted Steiner tree problem which will be studied in this paper. In general, this problem is NP-hard and cannot be approximated by a polynomial time algorithm with performance ratio aln n for any 0<a<1 unless NPDTIME(n O(log n)), where n is the number of nodes in s. In this paper, we are the first to show that even though for unit disk graphs, the problem is still NP-hard and it has a polynomial time constant approximation. We present a 2.5ρ-approximation where ρ is the best known performance ratio for polynomial time approximation of classical Steiner minimum tree problem in graphs. As a corollary, we obtain that there is a polynomial time (9.875+ε)-approximation algorithm for minimum weight connected dominating set in unit disk graphs, and also there is a polynomial time (4.875+ε)-approximation algorithm for minimum weight connected vertex cover in unit disk graphs.  相似文献

Let G=(V,E) be a graph without an isolated vertex. A set DV(G) is a k -distance paired dominating set of G if D is a k-distance dominating set of G and the induced subgraph 〈D〉 has a perfect matching. The minimum cardinality of a k-distance paired dominating set for graph G is the k -distance paired domination number, denoted by γ p k (G). In this paper, we determine the exact k-distance paired domination number of generalized Petersen graphs P(n,1) and P(n,2) for all k≥1.  相似文献

Let G=(V,E) be a graph. A set SV is a restrained dominating set if every vertex in VS is adjacent to a vertex in S and to a vertex in VS. The restrained domination number of G, denoted γ r (G), is the smallest cardinality of a restrained dominating set of G. A graph G is said to be cubic if every vertex has degree three. In this paper, we study restrained domination in cubic graphs. We show that if G is a cubic graph of order n, then gr(G) 3 \fracn4\gamma_{r}(G)\geq \frac{n}{4} , and characterize the extremal graphs achieving this lower bound. Furthermore, we show that if G is a cubic graph of order n, then gr(G) £ \frac5n11.\gamma _{r}(G)\leq \frac{5n}{11}. Lastly, we show that if G is a claw-free cubic graph, then γ r (G)=γ(G).  相似文献

For a positive integer k, a total {k}-dominating function of a graph G is a function f from the vertex set V(G) to the set {0,1,2,…,k} such that for any vertex vV(G), the condition ∑ uN(v) f(u)≥k is fulfilled, where N(v) is the open neighborhood of v. A set {f 1,f 2,…,f d } of total {k}-dominating functions on G with the property that ?i=1dfi(v) £ k\sum_{i=1}^{d}f_{i}(v)\le k for each vV(G), is called a total {k}-dominating family (of functions) on G. The maximum number of functions in a total {k}-dominating family on G is the total {k}-domatic number of G, denoted by dt{k}(G)d_{t}^{\{k\}}(G). Note that dt{1}(G)d_{t}^{\{1\}}(G) is the classic total domatic number d t (G). In this paper we initiate the study of the total {k}-domatic number in graphs and we present some bounds for dt{k}(G)d_{t}^{\{k\}}(G). Many of the known bounds of d t (G) are immediate consequences of our results.  相似文献

In a graph G, a vertex dominates itself and its neighbors. A subset SeqV(G) is an m-tuple dominating set if S dominates every vertex of G at least m times, and an m-dominating set if S dominates every vertex of GS at least m times. The minimum cardinality of a dominating set is γ, of an m-dominating set is γ m , and of an m-tuple dominating set is mtupledom. For a property π of subsets of V(G), with associated parameter f_π, the k-restricted π-number r k (G,f_π) is the smallest integer r such that given any subset K of (at most) k vertices of G, there exists a π set containing K of (at most) cardinality r. We show that for 1< k < n where n is the order of G: (a) if G has minimum degree m, then r k (G m ) < (mn+k)/(m+1); (b) if G has minimum degree 3, then r k (G,γ) < (3n+5k)/8; and (c) if G is connected with minimum degree at least 2, then r k (G,ddom) < 3n/4 + 2k/7. These bounds are sharp. Research supported in part by the South African National Research Foundation and the University of KwaZulu-Natal.  相似文献

Suppose S is a subset of a metric space X with metric d. For each subset D⊆{d(x,y):x,yS,xy}, the distance graph G(S,D) is the graph with vertex set S and edge set E(S,D)={xy:x,yS,d(x,y)∈D}. The current paper studies distance graphs on the n-space R 1 n with 1-norm. In particular, most attention is paid to the subset Z 1 n of all lattice points of R 1 n . The results obtained include the degrees of vertices, components, and chromatic numbers of these graphs. Dedicated to Professor Frank K. Hwang on the occasion of his 65th birthday. Algorithm for the Cost Edge-Coloring of Trees   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Let C be a set of colors, and let be a cost function which assigns a real number (c) to each color C in C. An edge-coloring of a graph G is to color all the edges of G so that any two adjacent edges are colored with different colors. In this paper we give an efficient algorithm to find an optimal edge-coloring of a given tree T, that is, an edge-coloring f of T such that the sum of costs (f(e)) of colors f(e) assigned to all edges e is minimum among all edge-colorings of T. The algorithm takes time O(n2) if n is the number of vertices and is the maximum degree of T.  相似文献
