Under laboratory conditions, 2 modes of transmission of Eustrongylides ignotus (Nematoda: Dioctophymatoidea) to fish were identified. Eastern mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki) became infected after ingestion of either eggs of E. ignotus containing first-stage larvae or aquatic oligochaetes (Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri) containing third-stage larvae of E. ignotus. After removal from the uterus of gravid E. ignotus females and incubation for 17-28 days, depending on temperature, it was found that parasite eggs contained first-stage larvae that were infective to fish and oligochaetes. Larvae developed to the third stage in oligochaetes and were infective to fish 35-77 days postinfection (PI) and when fed to fish, developed to the fourth stage between 127 and 184 days PI. Eggs containing first-stage larvae fed directly to fish developed to the fourth stage between 84 and 105 days PI. The amount of time for development from the undifferentiated egg to the fourth-stage larva was 78-156 days shorter when fish ingested eggs containing first-stage larvae than when fish ingested oligochaetes containing third-stage larvae. Three species of large piscivorous fish, including black crappie (Pomoxis nigromaculatus), largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), and warmouth (Lepomis gulosus), were fed mosquitofish containing fourth-stage larvae. At necropsy, live E. ignotus larvae were recovered from all 3 species. Several fish had multiple infections after ingesting > 1 larva, indicating that bioaccumulation of the parasite in the food chain may occur.  相似文献

A total of 186 sculpins (Myoxocephalus scorpius) were caught at Vega, Nordland, Norway, and examined for sealworm larvae (Pseudoterranova decipiens). Over 80% of the fish were infected. Very high infections were found with a maximum of nearly 300 larvae in one sculpin. Infections of this magnitude have so far not been reported from sculpins or any other fish species of this size. The importance of the sculpin in the life cycle and in the transmission of P. decipiens to seals or other fish species is briefly discussed.  相似文献

The circulation pattern and transmission dynamics of larval and adult Cystidicoloides tenuissima in all its intermediate and definitive hosts were investigated and quantified at three sites in a small upland stream over a period of 1 year. Both brown trout, Salmo trutta , and salmon parr, S. salar , were suitable definitive hosts, but because of the greater importance of the mayfly intermediate host in the diet of trout, between 73 and 98% of the parasite infrapopulation in fish circulated through this species. Trout was the only required host, and was alone responsible for the perpetuation of the parasite suprapopulation in the river. Around 99% of the parasite's eggs produced originated from trout but, of these, 90% or more failed to be ingested by an insect. Larval parasites were found in 18 species of insects, but could develop to the infective third stage in only one species, the mayfly Leptophlebia marginata. Two common but unsuitable species harboured up to 80% of the larval parasites, and less than 10% actually circulated through L. marginata. Differences in circulation pattern between sites could be related more to differences in fish feeding preferences than to differences in fish or insect density, but monthly differences in transmission rate reflected both fish diet and insect abundance. The overall mean transmission rate of eggs to larvae in L. marginata varied between 0.25 and 0.87%, but transmission rates of these larvae to fish were far higher, from 10.8 to 39.8%. The relative importance of ecological factors, host community structure and parasite specificity in determining circulation routes and transmission efficiencies are discussed.  相似文献

Some morphological features of inhibited fourth stage (L4) and fourth moult larvae (4M) of the bovine lungworm Dictyocaulus viviparus are described. Inhibition was induced by maintaining the third stage larvae (L3) for 6 weeks at 4 degrees C. Inhibited fourth stage (L4) and fourth moult larvae (4M) were collected by perfusion of the lungs of experimentally infected calves after necropsy at 15 and 68 days post infection (d.p.i.), respectively. Inhibited 4M, isolated at 68 d.p.i., were about ten times larger than inhibited L4 isolated at 15 d.p.i.  相似文献

Cotesia flavipes (Hymenoptera:Braconidae) is a gregarious endoparasitoid of several pyralid stemborer larvae of economic significance including the sugarcane borer, Diatraea saccharalis. In this study, the ability of this parasitoid to develop in a sphingid host, Manduca sexta, was tested. First, second, third, fourth, and even pharate fifth instar host tobacco hornworm larvae were readily parasitized by the female C. flavipes parasitoids but no wasp larvae hatched from the eggs in this refractory host. Instead, the parasitoid eggs were invariably encapsulated by the host's hemocytes and, ultimately, no parasitoids emerged from tobacco hornworm hosts. The first stages of encapsulation were evident at 2 h post-parasitization of the host M. sexta larvae, when the beginning stages of capsule formation were seen. The developmental fate of the host larvae with encapsulated parasitoids was variable. Most succumbed as abnormally small fifth instars or as post-wandering prepupal animals, while a few developed normally to the pupal stage. Dissection of all the larvae or pupae with encapsulated wasp eggs showed evidence of hemocytic encapsulation and melanization of the C. flavipes eggs. This report describes the association between C. flavipes and M. sexta, which appears to be an excellent model system for studying the physiological processes accompanying wasp egg encapsulation that result in death of the host as well as the parasitoid. Since the parasitoid egg never hatches, the system offers an excellent opportunity to identify and study the effects of parasitoid-injected polydnavirus and venom on host physiology.  相似文献

The effects of multiple infections on the host-parasite relationship between bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus) and parasitic glochidial larvae of the freshwater mussel Utterbackia imbecillis were examined. Na?ve, young-of-the-year bluegills were infected with glochidia and placed in individual observation chambers. Each day, water was drained from each chamber and the numbers of dead glochidia, live glochidia, partially metamorphosed glochidia, and fully metamorphosed juvenile mussels were counted. The same fishes were infected a total of 4 times. After 2 infections, the fish began to exhibit evidence of acquired resistance to glochidia. During the third and fourth infections, this resistance was clearly evidenced by the marked increase in the percentage of dead and live glochidia shed during the first 5 days of the infection and by the significant decrease in the success of metamorphosis. The total number of glochidia that successfully attached to the fish decreased significantly during the fourth infection relative to the first. The number of larvae attached to the host fish was positively correlated with the size of the fish during the first infection but was negatively correlated during all subsequent infections. Variance to mean ratios indicated that larvae were aggregated among host fishes during the infections. This study has important implications in propagation and conservation efforts of this endangered group of organisms.  相似文献

Synopsis The seasonal transmission ofRaphidascaris acus was studied in two small lakes on Manitoulin Island, Ontario. Dragonfly nymphs and caddisfly larvae, acting as paratenic hosts, contained second-stage larvae. Several fishes, including percids and cyprinids, were intermediate hosts with second, third, and fourth-stage larvae in the liver. Yellow perch,Perca flavescens, was the most important of these. Intensities were up to 928 and increased with length and age of the perch; prevalence was 100%. Abundance ofR. acus tended to be higher in females but was not related to condition of the perch. Second-stage larvae were acquired from invertebrates in summer and developed to the fourth stage by November. They became surrounded by fibrous capsules during the next summer but remained alive for at least another year. The longevity of larvae in the intermediate host may ensure survival of the parasite through periods of low host abundance after winterkill. Northern pike,Esox lucius, was the definitive host. Abundance ofR. acus tended to be greater in larger pike but was not related to sex or condition of the fish. The parasite was acquired in late fall. Prevalence was 100% and mean intensities were over 200 in winter and spring, declining to 64–100% and less than 15, respectively, in summer. Mature worms were present from early spring through summer. Seasonality of infection in the definitive host is not attributable to seasonal availability of larvae in perch. Instead it may be controlled by timing of predation on perch and rate of development and longevity of the parasite. Transmission to pike apparently continues in summer. Low intensity may result from low recruitment rate and rapid turnover of the parasite population.  相似文献

As a result of parasitism by Glyptapanteles liparidis in the first, second, third and fourth instar larvae of Acronicta rumicis, the mortality of each larval stage was found to be 46.67, 90, 71 and 16.67%, respectively. The mortality was highest when G. liparidis parasitized the second and third instar larvae. The difference in mortality between the parasitized group and the control group was 72.14% in the second instar larvae. With regards to the food consumption of the parasitized larvae, the first and second instar larvae consumed 6495.58 ± 646.52 mm2 (leaf surface) and 7951.12 ± 4167.36 mm2, respectively, while the third and fourth larvae consumed 13 826.77 ± 3396.66 mm2 and 18 599.85 mm2, respectively, showing that food consumption increased with instar stages of the host larvae. The clutch size of G. liparidis increased in relation to the instar stages of the host: it was 25.25 ± 7.89, 48.65 ± 53.75, 91.09 ± 44.52 and 114 individuals when they were fed with the first, second, third and the fourth instar larvae of the host, respectively.  相似文献

The hemolymph juvenile hormone (JH) titer of third through fifth stadia Trichoplusia ni parasitized by the polyembryonic parasitoid, Copidosoma floridanum, was measured by radioimmunoassay and compared to the titers of unparasitized larvae. The JH titer of parasitized larvae fluctuated from 28 pg/μl to undetectable levels. Maximum levels of hormone were present at ecdysis to the fourth and fifth stadium, and at the prepupal stage. Qualitatively, similar fluctuations were observed in unparasitized larvae. However, the titers in unparasitized larvae were much lower than those of parasitized larvae in the third and early fourth stadia, and the titer fell to undetectable levels in the fifth stadium 24 h earlier (48 h) than in parasitized larvae (72 h). Preventing the JH titer from falling during the fourth and fifth stadia by topical application of (RS)-methoprene or JH II had a juvenilizing effect on parasitized T. ni, and inhibited C. floridanum embryo morphogenesis. The effect of exogenous methoprene and JH on C. floridanum development depended on timing of application and dosage. Application of 100 pmol per day of methoprene beginning at 2 h of the host fourth stadium, prior to the large drop in the endogenous JH titer, inhibited morphogenesis in the majority of C. floridanum embryos. Application of methoprene at later times of host development did not inhibit morphogenesis although other developmental alterations were observed. The potential significance of host JH and ecdysteroid titers on polyembryonic development are discussed.  相似文献

The growth and emigration of Hystherothylacium aduncum in laboratory-reared herring larvae Clupea harengus was studied. Experimental infections of 36-day-old herring larvae resulted in 126 hosts infected with 306 H. aduncum larvae. Regression analyses showed a significant worm emigration from the rectum to the head of the fish, accompanied by an increase in worm body length. The emigration was independent of worm intensity, which suggests an ontogenetic process. Some worms departed from this pattern by moving posteriorly or by penetrating into the muscle, and in 5 cases, the larvae were observed to leave living fish. This individual variation has not been observed in previous studies and might be explained by host signals related to condition or development stage. Indirect evidence suggested parasite-induced mortality in the tanks due to the emigrations because only 4 of the 126 infected fish survived 8 days postinfection; the emigration of H. aduncum affected vital organs, such as the heart and brain, and the larvae penetrating or leaving the host's tissues can cause extensive damage to the delicate herring larvae.  相似文献

Genetic variation of 1017 specimens of codworm, Pseudoterranova decipiens, collected from fish and seals at 23 sampling locations in the North Atlantic and Norwegian and Barents Seas, was analysed on the basis of 16 enzyme loci. Three reproductively isolated species, provisionally designated P. decipiens A, B and C, were detected, showing distinct alleles at the following loci: Mdh-1, 6Pgdh, Np, Pgm, Est-2 (between species A and B); Mdh-3, 6Pgdh, Np, Sod-1, Adk, Pgm, Est-2, Mpi (between A and C); Mdh-1, Mdh-3, Sod-1, Adk, Pgm, Est-2, Mpi (between B and C). One F1 hybrid was observed between P. decipiens A and B, but this apparently does not lead to any gene exchange between the two species, which do not show any evidence of introgression. No hybrids or introgressed individuals were observed between P. decipiens C and either A or B. Genetic distances among conspecific populations were low (average Nei's D 0.001-0.005), even though they were collected thousands of kilometres apart, indicating high levels of gene flow within each of the three species. The values of Nei's index D were 0.44 between P. decipiens A and B, 0.57 between B and C, and 0.79 between A and C. Estimated evolutionary divergence times, using Nei's formula, range from 2 to 4 million years. Differences between P. decipiens A, B and C were also found with respect to genetic variability, morphology, geographical distribution and hosts. Mean heterozygosity values of 0.08, 0.05 and 0.02 were obtained for P. decipiens A, B and C, respectively. Preliminary morphological examination of adult males, previously identified by multilocus electrophoresis, revealed differences in the relative size and pattern of caudal papillae. P. decipiens B is widespread in the study area, whereas P. decipiens A was found only in the North-East Atlantic and Norwegian Sea. In this area P. decipiens A is most common in the grey seal, Halichoerus grypus, while the common seal, Phoca vitulina, is the main host for P. decipiens B. In Canadian Atlantic waters, where P. decipiens A is apparently absent, P. decipiens B infects both grey and common seals; a few specimens were also found in the hooded seal, Cystophora cristata. The only definitive host so far identified for P. decipiens C is the bearded seal, Erignathus barbatus; P. decipiens C appears to be widespread, occurring in both the North-West Atlantic and Barents Sea.  相似文献

The fauna of soybean leafhoppers and the biology of dominant species were investigated in Karaj during 1992-1994. For identification of species the male genitalia and other taxonomic characters were used. In order to find the duration and number of nymph stages, leaf cages were used on the plants. A thermograph was used to study the effect of temperature on nymphal stages in greenhouse. To study biology of E. decipiens in field four cages prepared and the trials has done inside them, and weekly all its life cycle observed. The following six species from four genera were identified: Empoasca decipiens Paoli, Macrosteles quadripunctulatus (KIrschbaum), M. laevis (Rib). Psammotettix alienus (Dahlbom), P. Striatus (Linne), Neoaliturus tenellus (Baker). Our investigations showed that Empoasca decipiens was the dominant species with the highest abundance. This specie is one of the important pests in many parts of Iran where oilseed crops are planted. The results showed that the soybean leafhopper over winters as adult under the debris of host plants and weeds. The first generation completes their life cycle on weeds before planting soybean. The second, third, and fourth generation lived on soybean. The time taken for the first, second, third, fourth and fifth nymphal stages were 6-7, 5-6, 2-4, 4-6 and 6-8 days, respectively. Adult longevity was 17-19 days, so that duration of first generation on weeds was 54-66 days. Our experiments showed that, at 18 degrees C condition, the first stages have been the maximum nymph period and at 23 degrees C condition, have been the lowest period.  相似文献

双条杉天牛Semanotus bifasciatus(Motschulsky)是危害柏树类树木的主要蛀干害虫之一,主要以幼虫蛀干危害树木。1~4龄幼虫主要危害韧皮部,4龄后幼虫则开始进入到木质部危害,并且用虫粪堵塞蛀道与外界的联络通道,造成小型天敌进入困难。本文通过利用中华甲虫蒲螨Pyemotes zhonghuajia(YuandZhang)防治双条杉天牛1~2和3~4龄幼虫研究试验,比较了天敌中华甲虫蒲螨不同释放量对双条杉天牛的防治效果。结果表明,当中华甲虫蒲螨释放量为1管/木段时,对1~2龄幼虫防治较好,达83.0%;当中华甲虫蒲螨释放量为2管/木段时,对3~4龄幼虫防治也有较好的防治效果,防治效果高达87.7%;但从防治经济高效的角度出发,最合理高效的投放量为1管蒲螨/木段,防治1~2龄幼虫可行性最高。通过中华甲虫蒲螨对双条杉天牛幼虫的寄生结果比较得知,其对寄生体长为1~2cm的双条杉天牛幼虫有明显的趋向性。  相似文献

The ascaridoid nematode Pseudoterranova decipiens has a complex life-cycle. Adult worms reproduce in the stomach of grey seals, Halichoerus grypus , and other pinnipeds, and the larvae are found encysted in the musculature of Atlantic cod, a common host. An increase in infection levels in Canadian, Icelandic and Norwegian cod stocks over the last decade has been attributed to recent increases in seal population numbers. A simple model is proposed for the accumulation of larval parasites in the fish through its food. The model describes how regional differences in fish growth can also explain some differences in infection levels.  相似文献

The mortality of Aedes aegypti pre-imagos harboring metacercariae of Plagiorchis noblei Park, 1936, is governed by the stage of development of the host at the time of infection and the location of the parasite in the insect body. First and second instar larvae generally succumbed to infection, regardless of site. Infections of the head and thorax of third and fourth instar larvae were generally lethal or gave rise to imparied adults. However, older instars frequently survived abdominal infections. Pupae showed greater tolerance to cephalic, thoracic and abdominal infections and generally emerged as adults. Again, many such infected adults were impaired.  相似文献

We investigated the occurrence of antibodies against protein antigens of the nematode parasite Pseudoterranova decipiens in the plasma and bile of the Antarctic teleost Trematomus bernacchii. Three different P. decipiens protein solutions were prepared: excreted/secreted proteins from live larvae (ESP); surface-associated proteins obtained by mild extraction of larval bodies (SAP); and cuticular soluble proteins recovered by extraction in strong reducing conditions (CSP). Using different immunoassays, these 3 preparations were tested for their ability to bind fish antibody. As determined by ELISA, the specific antibody binding activity was higher in SAP than in CSP. As determined by dot-blot immunoassay, the specific antigen binding activity versus SAP was higher in bile than in plasma antibodies. A different number of antigenic components of SAP and ESP were identified by immunoblotting performed with plasma or bile antibodies. These results led to the conclusion that T. bernacchii parasitism by nematodes involves plasma and bile anti-parasite antibodies. Furthermore bile antibodies were found to be more reactive and more heterogeneous than plasma.  相似文献

Contracaecum sp. larvae (L3) from fish were identified using nucleotide sequences of the internal transcribed spacers ITS-1 and ITS-2 of the ribosomal DNA. The nematode larvae originated from fish in a freshwater situation (crucian carp Carassius carassius, from Selment Wielki Lake in Mazury, northeastern Poland) and a brackish-water region (Caspian round goby Neogobius melanostomus from the Baltic Sea, Gdafisk Bay at the Polish coast). Two strains (Contracaecum rudolphii A and B) of Contracaecum rudolphii senso lato, a parasite common at the adult stage in fish-eating birds, were identified. In fish from the freshwater site, only the strain temporarily designated C. rudolphii B was identified; in the brackish-water region, both strains were found, suggesting that fish serve as paratenic host for both genotypes. Contracaecum rudolphii sensu lato has been recorded in several species of fish-eating birds in Poland, particularly in the great cormorant, Phalacrocorax carbo, in which the abundance is highest. The results, although based on a restricted number of larvae, suggest that the life cycles of both genotypes can be completed in the Polish region and that at least one of them, C. rudolphii B, can develop both in fresh and brackish water.  相似文献

Third larval stages (L3) removed from fish fillets, fourth larval stages (L4) raised in in vitro culture, and adults of Pseudoterranova decipiens, collected from grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) stomachs, were exposed to the broad spectrum anthelmintic, ivermectin. L3 and L4 parasites were exposed, in vitro, to 500, 100, 50, 20, 5 and 1 micrograms/ml concentrations of the drug, in culture media. Adult P. decipiens were exposed in vitro to a concentration of 500 micrograms/ml ivermectin, only. Controls consisted of parasites placed in culture media alone or culture media plus drug vehicle. These three developmental stages of P. decipiens were all found to be susceptible to the effects of ivermectin.  相似文献
