Two series of poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐b‐poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) triblock copolymers were prepared by the ring opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone in the presence of poly(ethylene glycol) and dibutylmagnesium in 1,4‐dioxane solution at 70°C. The triblock structure and molecular weight of the copolymers were analyzed and confirmed by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, FTIR, and gel permeation chromatography. The crystallization and thermal properties of the copolymers were investigated by wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results illustrated that the crystallization and melting behaviors of the copolymers were depended on the copolymer composition and the relative length of each block in copolymers. Crystallization exothermal peaks (Tc) and melting endothermic peaks (Tm) of PEG block were significantly influenced by the relative length of PCL blocks, due to the hindrance of the lateral PCL blocks. With increasing of the length of PCL blocks, the diffraction and the melting peak of PEG block disappeared gradually in the WAXD patterns and DSC curves, respectively. In contrast, the crystallization of PCL blocks was not suppressed by the middle PEG block. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献

Amphiphilic thermally sensitive poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide)‐block‐poly(tetramethylene carbonate) block copolymers were synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization of tetramethylene carbonate with hydroxyl‐terminated poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNiPAAm) as macro‐initiator in the presence of stannous octoate as catalyst. The synthesis involved PNiPAAm bearing a single terminal hydroxyl group prepared by telomerization using 2‐hydroxyethanethiol as a chain‐transfer agent. The copolymers were characterized using 1H NMR and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography. Their solutions show reversible changes in optical properties: transparent below the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) and opaque above the LCST. The LCST depends on the polymer composition and the media. Owing to their amphiphilic characteristics, the block copolymers form micelles in the aqueous phase with critical micelle concentrations (CMCs) in the range 1.11–22.9 mg L?1. Increasing the hydrophobic segment length or decreasing the hydrophilic segment length in the amphiphilic diblock copolymers produces lower CMCs. A core‐shell structure of the micelles is evident from 1H NMR analyses of the micelles in D2O. Transmission electron microscopic analyses of micelle morphology show a spherical structure of both blank and drug‐loaded micelles. The blank and drug‐loaded micelles have an average size of less than 130 nm. Observations show high drug‐entrapment efficiency and drug‐loading content for the drug‐loaded micelles. A strategy is introduced for the synthesis of polyethylene‐block‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) block copolymers by a combination of coordination polymerization and ring‐opening polymerization. First, end‐hydroxylated polyethylene (PE‐OH) was prepared with a one‐step process through ethylene/3‐buten‐1‐ol copolymerization catalyzed by a vanadium(III) complex bearing a bidentate [N,O] ligand ([PhN?C(CH3)CHC(Ph)O]VCl2(THF)2). The PE‐OH was then used as macroinitiator for ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone, leading to the desired nonpolar/polar diblock copolymers. The block structure was confirmed by spectral analysis using 1H NMR, gel permeation chromatography and differential scanning calorimetry. The unusual topologies of the model copolymers will establish a fundamental understanding for structure–property correlations, e.g. compatibilization, of polymer blends and surface and interface modification of other polymers. © 2014 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

The aim of the study was to investigate the mechanical properties and biodegradability of poly(trimethylenecarbonate‐ε‐caprolactone)‐block‐poly(p‐dioxanone) [P(TMC‐ε‐CL)‐block‐PDO] in comparison with poly(p‐dioxanone) and poly(glycolide‐ε‐caprolactone) (Monocryl®) monofilaments in vivo and in vitro. P(TMC‐ε‐CL)‐block‐PDO copolymer and poly(p‐dioxanone) were prepared by using ring‐opening polymerization reaction. The monofilament fibers were obtained using conventional melt spun methods. The physicochemical and mechanical properties, such as viscosity, molecular weight, crystallinity, and knot security, were studied. Tensile strength, breaking strength retention, and surface morphology of P(TMC‐ε‐CL)‐block‐PDO, poly(p‐dioxanone), and Monocryl monofilament fibers were studied by immersion in phosphate‐buffered distilled water (pH 7.2) at 37°C and in vivo. The implantation studies of absorbable suture strands were performed in gluteal muscle of rats. The polymers, P(TMC‐ε‐CL)‐block‐PDO, poly(p‐dioxanone), and Monocryl, were semicrystalline and showed 27, 32, and 34% crystallinity, respectively. Those mechanical properties of P(TMC‐ε‐CL)‐block‐PDO were comparatively lower than other polymers. The biodegradability of poly(dioxanone) homopolymer is much slower compared with that of two copolymers. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 102: 737–743, 2006  相似文献

Understanding the underlying role of microstructural design in polymers allows for the manipulation and control of properties for a wide range of specific applications. As such, this work focuses on the study of microstructure–property relationships in l‐ lactide/?‐caprolactone (LL/CL) copolymers. One‐step and two‐step bulk ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) procedures were employed to synthesize LL/CL copolymers of various compositions and chain microstructures. In the one‐step procedure, LL and CL were simultaneously copolymerized to yield P(LL‐stat‐CL) statistical copolymers. In the two‐step procedure, poly(l‐ lactide) (PLL) and poly(?‐caprolactone) (PCL) prepolymers were synthesized in the first step before CL and LL respectively were added in the second step to yield P[LL‐b‐(CL‐stat‐LL)‐b‐LL] and P[CL‐b‐(LL‐stat‐CL)‐b‐CL] block copolymers as the final products. The findings reveal that, in addition to the copolymerization procedure employed, the length and type of the prepolymer play important roles in determining the chain microstructure and thereby the overall properties of the final copolymer. Moreover, control over the degree of crystallinity and the type of crystalline domains, which is controlled during the polymer chemistry process, heavily influences the physical and mechanical properties of the final polymer. In summary, this work describes an interesting approach to the microstructural design of biodegradable copolymers of LL and CL for potential use in biomedical applications. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

A series of thermoresponsive triblock copolymers, methoxy poly(ethylene oxide)‐b‐poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐b‐poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (mPEO‐b‐PCL‐b‐PNIPAM), with different PCL and PNIPAM block lengths, were synthesized by a combination of ring opening polymerization and reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer polymerization techniques. The triblock copolymers undergo self‐assembly in aqueous solutions forming stable nanovesicles of various sizes with a lipid membrane structure similar to body cells as revealed by transmission electron microscopy. The nanovesicle is thermoresponsive, that is, its size is tunable using the temperature as a switch: shrinks at a temperature above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) and expands at a temperature below the LCST. The corresponding LCST of the triblock copolymers is adjustable by varying the PNIAM segment length as well as the PCL segment length and covers a range from 33.9 to 41.0°C in water. The diameter of nanovesicles for mPEO3kb‐PCL5kb‐PNIPAM13.2k is about 177.7 nm below the LCST and 138.9 nm above the LCST, as determined by dynamic light scattering. It was demonstrated using indomethacin, a popular anti‐inflammation medicine, that the triblock copolymers can effectively act as a drug release carrier under the right human physiological conditions, that is, store the drug at a lower temperature and release it at a higher temperature, possibly targeting at the lesion sites of human body. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The spherulitic growth rates of a series poly (?‐caprolactone) homopolymers and poly(?‐caprolactone)‐b‐ poly(ethylene glycol) (PCL‐b‐PEG) block copolymers with different molecular weights but narrow polydispersity were studied. The results show that for both PCL homopolymers and PCL‐b‐PEG block copolymers, the spherulitic growth rate first increases with molecular weight and reaches a maximum, then decreases as molecular weight increases. Crystallization temperature has greater influence on the spherulitic growth rate of polymers with higher molecular weight. Hoffman–Lauritzen theory was used to analyze spherulitic growth kinetics and the free energy of the folding surface (σe) was derived. It is found that the values of σe decrease with molecular weight at low molecular weight level and become constant for high molecular weight polymers. The chemically linked PEG block does not change the values of σe significantly. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 2007  相似文献

The air‐side surface composition of a series of poly(ε‐caprolactone)–perfluoropolyether–poly(ε‐caprolactone) triblock copolymers with different compositions and block lengths have been studied by angle‐dependent X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The weight percentage of the perfluoropolyether (PFPE) and polycaprolactone (PCL) blocks, and ethylene oxide linker (RH) has been calculated in different ways: from C1s, O1s and F1s photoemission peaks and by line fitting of the C1s and O1s envelopes. The atomic sensitivity factors and the parameters used to fit the peak envelopes have been experimentally determined using some reference materials. A critical discussion of the different methods used in the surface characterization and the degradation of PFPE segments, induced by irradiation beam, have been also reported. A large excess of PFPE with respect to the bulk composition was observed in all samples, and the angular dependence of the XPS signal demonstrated that the content of the fluorinated block segment increased by decreasing the sampling depth. The PFPE surface concentration was also decreased by increasing the PCL/PFPE ratio, but the surfaces of the samples were still dominated by PFPE segments for copolymers with a bulk PFPE composition lower than 10%. Moreover, copolymers with similar PCL/PFPE bulk ratios but with different PFPE block lengths, showed similar PFPE surface composition when the number‐average molecular weight (Mn) was 2000 and 3200 g mol?1, while that observed for copolymers containing PFPE block with Mn 900 g mol?1 was lower. Novel polyesters, poly[(ε‐caprolactone)‐co‐(N‐trityl‐L ‐serine‐β‐lactone)]s, were prepared by copolymerizing ε‐caprolactone (CL) with N‐trityl‐L ‐serine‐β‐lactone (TSL) using ZnEt2 as the catalyst. The number‐average molecular weights were determined which ranged from 2.7 × 104 to 4.9 × 104 Da with dispersity values ranging from 1.6 to 1.8. The structures of the copolymers were investigated by means of 1H NMR, 13C NMR and infrared spectroscopies, thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. The results indicated that CL and TSL monomer units were randomly distributed within the copolymer backbone structures and the ratios of TSL to CL in the copolymers were close to those in the feeds. After removal of the trityl group under mild condition, a new polyester with side amino groups provided by serine units was obtained. L929 cell culturing test indicated good biocompatibility of the polyester with or without protective groups. © 2012 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Star‐shaped copolymers poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐bolck‐poly(ε‐benzyloxycarbonyl‐l ‐lysine) (SPPCL‐b‐PZLLs) with porphyrin core were synthesized by a sequential ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of CL and Nε‐Benzyloxycarbonyl‐l ‐lysine N‐Carboxyanhydride. After the deprotection of benzyloxycarbonyl groups in polylysine blocks, the star‐shaped amphiphilic copolymers SPPCL‐b‐PLLs were obtained. These amphiphilic copolymers can self‐assemble into micelles or aggregates in aqueous solution. Investigation shows that the morphology of micelles/aggregates varied according to the change of pH values of media, indicating the pH‐responsive property of SPPCL‐b‐PLL copolymers. Furthermore, associated with conjugated porphyrin cores, the SPPCL‐b‐PLL copolymers micelles showed a certain degree of Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) effects on tumor cells, suggesting its potential application as carrier for hydrophobic drug with additional therapeutic ability of inherent porphyrin segments. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This paper describes the synthesis of a series of ABA‐type triblock copolymers of trimethylene carbonate and ?‐caprolactone with various molar ratios and analyses the thermal and mechanical properties of the resulting copolymers. The structures of the triblock copolymers were characterized by 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, FT‐IR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography. Results obtained from the various characterization methods proves the successful synthesis of block copolymers of trimethylene carbonate and ?‐caprolactone. The thermal properties of the block copolymers were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry. The Tm and ΔHm values of the copolymers decrease with increasing content of trimethylene carbonate units. Two Tgs were found in the copolymers. Furthermore, both of the Tg values increased with increasing content of trimethylene carbonate units. The mechanical properties of the resulting copolymers were studied by using a tensile tester. The results indicated that the mechanical properties of the block copolymers are related to the molar ratio of trimethylene carbonate and ?‐caprolactone in the copolymers, as well as the molecular weights of the resulting copolymers. The block copolymer with a molar composition of 50/50 possessed the highest tensile stress at maximum and modulus of elasticity. Block copolymers possessing different properties could be obtained by adjusting the copolymer compositions. Copyright © 2004 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Polystyrene terminated with benzyl alcohol units was employed as a macroinitiator for ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone and L ‐lactide to yield AB‐ and ABC‐type block copolymers. Even though there are many reports on the diblock copolymers of poly(styrene‐block‐lactide) and poly(styrene‐block‐lactone), this is the first report on the poly(styrene‐block‐lactone‐block‐lactide) triblock copolymer consisting of two semicrystalline and degradable segments. The triblock copolymers exhibited twin melting behavior in differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis with thermal transitions corresponding to each of the lactone and lactide blocks. The block derived from ε‐caprolactone also showed crystallization transitions upon cooling from the melt. In the DSC analysis, one of the triblock copolymers showed an exothermic transition well above the melting temperature upon cooling. Thermogravimetric analysis of these block copolymers showed a two‐step degradation curve for the diblock copolymer and a three‐step degradation for the triblock copolymer with each of the degradation steps associated with each segment of the block copolymers. The present study shows that it is possible to make pure triblock copolymers with two semicrystalline segments which also consist of degradable blocks. A series of poly(?‐caprolactone)‐b‐poly(ethylene glycol) (PCL‐b‐PEG) block copolymers with different molecular weights were synthesized with a salicylaldimine‐aluminum complex in the presence of monomethoxy poly(ethylene glycol). The block copolymers were characterized by 1H NMR, GPC, WAXD, and DSC. The 1H NMR and GPC results verify the block structure and narrow molecular weight distribution of the block copolymers. WAXD and DSC results show that crystallization behavior of the block copolymers varies with the composition. When the PCL block is extremely short, only the PEG block is crystallizable. With further increase in the length of the PCL block, both blocks can crystallize. The PCL crystallizes prior to the PEG block and has a stronger suppression effect on crystallization of the PEG block, while the PEG block only exerts a relatively weak adverse effect on crystallization of the PCL block. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hybrid block copolymers find applications in drug delivery, tissue engineering, biomimetics and bioimaging, amongst others, mainly due to their propensity to form phase‐separated microdomains as well as to the aggregation of their polypeptide segments. They not only enhance control over structure at the nanometre scale but also yield materials that can interface with various biosystems for different utilities. α‐Methoxy‐poly(ethylene glycol)‐block‐poly[?‐(benzyloxycarbonyl)‐l ‐lysine] hybrid block copolymers of varying degrees of polymerization, MPEGn‐b‐PLL(Z)m, were synthesized by N‐carboxyanhydride ring‐opening polymerization and characterized using infrared and NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography. Their secondary structures and bulk conformations were investigated using circular dichroism spectroscopy and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, respectively, whereas thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), derivative TGA and differential scanning calorimetry were employed for thermal analyses. The resulting block copolymers exhibited microphase separation and suppressed degrees of crystallinity with increasing l ‐lysine content and adopted α‐helix and β‐sheet secondary structures in aqueous milieu. The copolymers were also more thermally stable than their constituent homopolymers. Interestingly, the effects of the retention of the N?‐benzyloxycarbonyl moiety on polymer properties proved considerable. The hybrid block copolymers herein afforded hierarchical structures of potential utility in the biomedical and pharmaceutical fields. © 2012 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐block‐poly(vinyl acetate) (PCL‐b‐PVAc) block copolymers were synthesized using two approaches: a ‘coupling’ approach using click chemistry reaction and a ‘macroinitiator’ route. Different copolymers, varying by their block lengths, were prepared with both methods. PCL is a semi‐crystalline polymer, and consequently PCL blocks of PCL‐b‐PVAc are able to crystallize. The purpose of this work was to analyse the influence of the method of copolymer synthesis on the crystallinity of the PCL blocks. The results indicate a significant decrease of the crystallinity of the PCL blocks in copolymers obtained using the coupling method, compared to PCL homopolymers, in contrast to copolymers obtained through the macroinitiator approach for which the crystallinity of PCL is much less affected. This influence of the synthesis method is explained by the presence, in the copolymers obtained using the click reaction, of a rigid triazol cycle binding the two blocks, limiting their mobility and decreasing the tendency of PCL to crystallize. © 2013 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Macroporous poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA) hydrogels were synthesized by free‐radical crosslinking polymerization in aqueous solution from N‐isopropylacrylamide monomer and N,N‐methylenebis (acrylamide) crosslinker using poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) with three different number‐average molecular weights of 300, 600 and 1000 g mol?1 as the pore‐forming agent. The influence of the molecular weight and amount of PEG pore‐forming agent on the swelling ratio and network parameters such as polymer–solvent interaction parameter (χ) and crosslinking density (νE) of the hydrogels is reported and discussed. Scanning electron micrographs reveal that the macroporous network structure of the hydrogels can be adjusted by applying different molecular weights and compositions of PEG during polymerization. At a temperature below the volume phase transition temperature, the macroporous hydrogels absorbed larger amounts of water compared to that of conventional PNIPA hydrogels, and showed higher equilibrated swelling ratios in aqueous medium. Particularly, the unique macroporous structure provides numerous water channels for water diffusion in or out of the matrix and, therefore, an improved response rate to external temperature changes during the swelling and deswelling process. These macroporous PNIPA hydrogels may be useful for potential applications in controlled release of macromolecular active agents. Copyright © 2006 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Poly(L ‐lactide‐co‐ε‐caprolactone)‐b‐poly(L ‐lactide) [P(LL‐co‐CL)‐b‐PLL] diblock copolyesters were synthesized in a two‐step process with 1‐dodecanol (DDC) and stannous octoate as the initiating system. In the first‐step reaction, a 50:50 mol % amorphous poly(L ‐lactide‐co‐ε‐caprolactone) [P(LL‐co‐CL)] copolyester was synthesized via the bulk copolymerization of L ‐lactide and ε‐caprolactone, which was followed by the polymerization of the PLL crystalline block at the end chain in the second‐step reaction. The yielded copolyesters were characterized with dilute‐solution viscometry, gel permeation chromatography, 1H‐ and 13C‐NMR, and differential scanning calorimetry methods. The molecular weights of the P(LL‐co‐CL) copolyesters from the first‐step reaction were controlled by the DDC concentrations, whereas in the second‐step reaction, the molecular weights of the P(LL‐co‐CL)‐b‐PLL diblock copolyesters depended on the starting P(LL‐co‐CL) copolyester molecular weights and L ‐lactide/prepolymer molar ratios. The starting P(LL‐co‐CL) copolyester molecular weights and PLL block lengths seemed to be the main factors affecting specific thermal properties, including the melting temperature (Tm), heat of melting (ΔHm), crystallizing temperature (Tc), and heat of crystallizing (ΔHc), of the final P(LL‐co‐CL)‐b‐PLL diblock copolyester products. Tm, ΔHm, Tc, and ΔHc increased when the PLL block lengths increased. However, these thermal properties of the diblock copolyesters also decreased when the P(LL‐co‐CL) block lengths increased. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2007  相似文献

Poly(A)‐block‐poly(B), poly(A)‐block‐poly(B)‐block‐poly(A) and B(A)2 block copolymers were prepared through coordinated anionic ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone (CL) and lactic acid (LA) using hydroxy‐terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as initiator. A wide range of well‐defined combinations of PDMS‐block‐PCL and PDMS‐block‐PLA diblock copolymers, PCL‐block‐PDMS‐block‐PCL and PLA‐block‐PDMS‐block‐PLA triblock copolymers and star‐PDMS(PCL)2 copolymers were thus obtained. The number‐average molar masses and the structure of the synthesized block copolymers were identified using various analytical techniques. The thermal properties of these copolymers were established using differential scanning calorimetry. Considering PDMS‐block‐PCL copolymers, the results demonstrate the complex effect of polymer architecture and PCL block length on the ability of the PDMS block to crystallize or not. In the case of diblock copolymers, crystallization of PCL blocks originated from stacking of adjacent chains inducing the extension of the PDMS block that can easily crystallize. In the case of star copolymers, the same tendency as in triblock copolymers is observed, showing a limited crystallization of PDMS when the length of the PCL block increases. In the case of PDMS‐block‐PLA copolymers, melting and crystallization transitions of the PLA block are never observed. Considering the diblock copolymers, PDMS sequences have the ability to crystallize. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

A series of novel star‐like copolymers H20‐poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide)‐random‐poly(poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate) (H20‐PNIPAm‐r‐PEGMA), which could respond to both temperature and ionic strength stimuli in aqueous solution were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization. Stimuli‐response of these copolymers in aqueous solution was characterized by dynamic laser scattering (DLS), 1H‐NMR and turbidity. In aqueous solution, these star‐like copolymers exhibited response to temperature and ionic strength with tunable low‐critical solution temperature (LCST) from 32 to 100°C. The LCST values of copolymers increased with increasing PEGMA contents, while decreased with increasing ionic strength. An interesting phenomenon, which should be a unique character of star‐like copolymer, was observed by the turbidity test of copolymer 1160. The addition of sodium chloride and increase of concentration can let copolymer 1160 behave normally, which was further confirmed by atomic force microscopy and DLS. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hexa‐armed star‐shaped poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐block‐poly(L ‐lactide) (6sPCL‐b‐PLLA) with dipentaerythritol core were synthesized by a two‐step ring‐opening polymerization. GPC and 1H NMR data demonstrate that the polymerization courses are under control. The molecular weight of 6sPCLs and 6sPCL‐b‐PLLAs increases with increasing molar ratio of monomer to initiator, and the molecular weight distribution is in the range of 1.03–1.10. The investigation of the melting and crystallization demonstrated that the values of crystallization temperature (Tc), melting temperature (Tm), and the degree of crystallinity (Xc) of PLLA blocks are increased with the chain length increase of PLLA in the 6sPCL‐b‐PLLA copolymers. On the contrary, the crystallization of PCL blocks dominates when the chain length of PLLA is too short. According to the results of polarized optical micrographs, both the spherulitic growth rate (G) and the spherulitic morphology are affected by the macromolecular architecture and the length of the block chains. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
