Connectivity is a key factor in metacommunity ecology, because it influences dispersal and colonization rates. However, it has received less attention in aquatic than in terrestrial ecology research. We investigated whether connectivity is a good predictor of species richness in functional fish communities (freshwater, FS; estuarine, ES and estuarine-freshwater, EFS) from 31 coastal lakes in southern Brazil. We used a model selection approach, including lake area and distance from the ocean as additional predictors of species richness and two connectivity metrics: primary connectivity (C P) and estuarine connectivity (C E), which measure connectivity to neighboring lakes and system-wide connectivity, respectively. Both metrics estimate functional connectivity and were calculated on habitat-based cost distances. Connectivity was more important for predicting richness of functional communities than for total richness, particularly C E, which was distinctively related to each functional fish community richness (directly related to ES and EFS, and inversely related to FS; C P was related only to ES). Remarkably, connectivity was more important than area for predicting ES and EFS richness. These results add support to dispersal limitation as an important mechanism influencing fish communities. We suggest that incorporating environmental filters (habitat type) to quantify connectivity is useful for accessing the patterns of species richness.  相似文献

Neotropical floodplain lakes provide an excellent opportunity to examine the regulation and stability of fish assemblages. At low water, when lakes are separated, fish are concentrated in the lakes and are presumably subject to strong interspecific interactions that can shape assemblage structure. At high water, when the lakes and river channels become broadly interconnected, ample potential exists for alteration of assemblage structure because eggs, larvae, and older fish may undergo spatial reshuffling among waterbodies. Twenty lakes of the Orinoco River floodplain in Venezuela were surveyed in the early and late dry seasons of two consecutive years. Marked differences in assemblage structure among lakes were established in the early dry season. Changes in assemblage structure during the dry season were large and detectable even at the ordinal level; they reflected a strong reduction of visually oriented fish relative to fish with adaptations to low light. Changes were similar in the two years and were apparently due to species-specific differences in mortality, which was high over the dry season. The annual flood is a strong natural fluctuation that greatly modifies assemblage properties during the wet season. Nevertheless, the potential for alteration of assemblage structure by reshuffling was not realized: assemblage properties early and late in the dry season were similar in the two years, indicating a regular and predictable annual cycle of change in assemblage structure. This regularity can be explained by mechanisms of regulation which appear to be linked to piscivory and the optical environment. In contrast with the prevailing views on neotropical fish assemblages, there seems to be a strong deterministic component to assemblage structure and dynamics in Orinoco floodplain lakes.  相似文献

1. Submerged plant richness is a key element in determining the ecological quality of freshwater systems; it has often been reduced or completely lost. 2. The submerged and floating‐leaved macrophyte communities of 60 shallow lakes in Poland and the U.K. have been surveyed and species richness related to environmental factors by general linearised models. 3. Nitrogen, and more specifically winter nitrate, concentrations were most important in explaining species richness with which they were inversely correlated. Phosphorus was subsidiary. Such an inverse relationship is consistent with findings in terrestrial communities. Polish lakes, with less intensively farmed catchments, had greater richness than the U.K. lakes. 4. The richest U.K. communities were associated with winter nitrate‐N concentrations of up to about 1–2 mg L?1 and may correspond with ‘good’ ecological quality under the terms of the European Water Framework Directive. Current concentrations in European lowlands are often much higher.  相似文献

Completion of the Panama Canal in 1914 breached the continental divide and set into motion a natural experiment of unprecedented magnitude by bringing previously isolated freshwater fish communities into contact. The construction of a freshwater corridor connecting evolutionarily isolated communities in Pacific and Caribbean watersheds dramatically increased the rate of dispersal, without directly affecting species interactions. Here, we report that a large fraction of species have been able to establish themselves on the other side of the continental divide, whereas no species have become extinct, leading to a local increase in species richness. Our results suggest that communities are not saturated and that competitive exclusion does not occur over the time-scale previously envisioned. Moreover, the results of this unintentional experiment demonstrate that community composition and species richness were regulated by the regional process of dispersal, rather than by local processes such as competition and predation.  相似文献

We provide a comprehensive overview of the status of fish assemblages in eight Italian subalpine lakes using multiple data sources: historical records, standardised sampling and fishery catch statistics. Thirty-four fish species were recorded, twenty of which are native, seven introduced historically and another seven introduced recently. The number of fish species in individual lakes has increased by between 25 and 65% from 1855 to the present, with the increase being higher in the larger lakes. Non-native species contributed between 4.0 and 71.5% to standardised catches by numbers and between 4.8 and 65.1% by biomass. Roach Rutilus rutilus and pumpkinseed Lepomis gibbosus dominated electrofishing and benthic catches by number, while open-water catches were dominated by the coregonids European whitefish Coregonus lavaretus and gangfish Coregonus macrophthalmus. In terms of biomass, electrofishing catches were dominated by crucian carp Carassius carassius, largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides and wels catfish Silurus glanis, benthic catches were dominated by roach, European whitefish and crucian carp, and open-water catches by coregonids. Commercial fisheries are important ecosystem services provided by subalpine lakes, with their harvests now dominated by non-native species. To deliver effective biodiversity conservation and ecosystem services provision, the prioritisation of targets and interventions of management of non-native species is needed.  相似文献

1. Local assemblage structure, from a deterministic perspective, is presumably dictated by the regional species pool as well as regulated by local factors. We examined the relationships of the regional species pool and local hydrological characteristics to local species richness of North American freshwater fishes using data sets collected during the National Water Quality Assessment program conducted by the United States Geological Survey. 2. We predicted that local species richness is ultimately constrained by the composition of the regional species pool and further associated with local hydrological factors. Moreover, we predicted that variation in local species richness within major families can be explained by different combinations of hydrological characteristics that represent lineage‐specific responses to the environment. 3. Daily discharge and regional and local species richness data were assembled from 41 stream localities across the United States. Multiple stepwise regressions were conducted to predict local species richness, based on regional species richness, mean discharge and hydrological characteristics quantified by nine variables characterising flow variability. Species richness at each site was calculated for the entire assemblage as well as within the four most species‐rich families in the data set (Catostomidae, Centrarchidae, Cyprinidae and Percidae). 4. Local species richness was best predicted by a combination of regional species richness and discharge magnitude when all species were considered. Regional species richness was a significant explanatory variable of local species richness for three of four families (Catostomidae, Centrarchidae, Cyprinidae), but not for Percidae. Local richness in Centrarchidae and Cyprinidae was positively correlated with temporal flow variability as well as high and low flow duration, respectively, while richness in Catostomidae and Percidae tended to be associated with discharge volume. In addition, local species richness for three of the four major families was positively correlated with species richness of the other families in the assemblage, potentially suggesting the influence of local habitat quality and heterogeneity. 5. Results suggest the importance of the combined influences of the regional species pool and local hydrological characteristics on local richness in freshwater fishes, with variation in richness within each family predicted by different characteristics of flow regimes.  相似文献

Data from 46 Florida lakes were used to examine relationships between bird abundance (numbers and biomass) and species richness, and lake trophic status, lake morphology and aquatic macrophyte abundance. Average annual bird numbers ranged from 7 to 800 birds km–2 and bird biomass ranged from 1 to 465 kg km–2. Total species richness ranged from 1 to 30 species per lake. Annual average bird numbers and biomass were positively correlated to lake trophic status as assessed by total phosphorus (r = 0.61), total nitrogen (r = 0.60) and chlorophyll a (r = 0.56) concentrations. Species richness was positively correlated to lake area (r = 0.86) and trophic status (r = 0.64 for total phosphorus concentrations). The percentage of the total annual phosphorus load contributed to 14 Florida lakes by bird populations was low averaging 2.4%. Bird populations using Florida lakes, therefore, do not significantly impact the trophic status of the lakes under natural situations, but lake trophic status is a major factor influencing bird abundance and species richness on lakes. Bird abundance and species richness were not significantly correlated to other lake morphology or aquatic macrophyte parameters after the effects of lake area and trophic status were accounted for using stepwise multiple regression. The lack of significant relations between annual average bird abundance and species richness and macrophyte abundance seems to be related to changes in bird species composition. Bird abundance and species richness remain relatively stable as macrophyte abundance increases, but birds that use open-water habitats (e.g., double-crested cormorant, Phalacrocorax auritus) are replaced by species that use macrophyte communities (e.g., ring-necked duck, Aythya collaris).  相似文献

We conducted field surveys in 807 quadrats to evaluate the elevational belts, boundary and richness patterns of ferns and lycophytes in the temperate region of central Japan. We analysed fern species assemblages at 100 m elevational steps by cluster analysis and tested the number of upper and lower boundaries for elevational intervals against a null model of random distribution of elevational limits. We compared the pattern of fern species richness along the elevational gradients in central Japan with patterns in several locations to evaluate the fern flora in central Japan in relation to the rest of the world. We recorded 261 ferns species in total, which is one-third of the Japanese ferns. We found clear elevational boundaries of fern assemblages at 900 and 1,800 m and three fern elevational zones, which corresponded well to the elevational limits of forest types in central Japan. The pattern of fern species richness in central Japan was an asymmetric hump-shaped pattern that peaked close to the sea level, with the peak of local richness at lower elevations than that of regional richness. We found that the peak of fern species richness along the elevational gradient in Japan was located at lower elevations than that of fern elevational patterns in several locations around the world.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. The shallow ponds of the nature reserve 'De Maten' form a metacommunity, in which individual ponds are highly interconnected via a system of overflows and rivulets. This study reports on the relations between cladoceran species richness and (a) connectivity patterns and (b) local environmental variables.
2. No relation was found between local species richness and three connectivity variables or dispersal pathways.
3. Spatial configuration was related to richness, but was confounded by environmental variables for 2 of 3 years. In those 2 years, there was a significant linear relation between Secchi disc depth and species richness, suggesting an important impact of the clearwater/turbid state alternative equilibria in shallow lakes in determining cladoceran richness. Only in the year in which environmental variables were unimportant did connectivity between the ponds influence species richness.
4. These results suggest that local environmental variables related to the clearwater/turbid state alternative equilibria in shallow lakes are important in determining cladoceran species richness. Connectivity and dispersal of individuals between the different ponds only act secondarily by increasing the general species richness within a pond through dispersal from ponds with different environmental conditions.  相似文献

The relationship between benthic macroinvertebrates and environmental variables from 42 Italian lakes were analysed with the aim of developing a biotic index.In the investigated lakes, 570 species were found of which 373 belonged to the family of Chironomidae and 85 to the class of oligochaeta. Rare species, those present in less than 10 samples, were excluded from the analysis, leaving 57 species for data analysis.Multivariate analysis: canonical correlation analysis (CANON) and multivariate analysis of variance and covariance (MANCOVA) were carried out on a large database of 1060 sampling points, for which both environmental data (16 chemical and morphometric variables) and 57 species counts from soft bottom samples were available. In addition, a second dataset of 94 sites from small lakes sampled in 2005 in Northern Italy (Lombardy), was analysed for comparison.The data analysis (CANON) from the large database gave the following results:
  • (1)the first canonical variate was related to conductivity, pH and alkalinity and accounted for 17% of the total variation;
  • (2)the second canonical variate was related to total phosphorus, N-NH4 and dissolved oxygen, and accounted for 15% of the total variation;
  • (3)lake maximum depth, volume and water temperature were related to the third canonical variate, which accounted for 14% of the source of variation.
The analysis of the database from small lakes revealed that in the plane of the first two canonical variates dissolved oxygen was inversely correlated with the depth of sampling and that the second canonical variate showed an inverse relationship between transparency and nutrients.MANCOVA found evidence for differences between lake types and sampling years, confirmed the CANON results and allowed the quantification of the contribution of different target variables on species composition.A trophic status index was calculated ranking percentage oxygen saturation (O2 %sat), transparency (transp) and total phosphorus (TP). The means of O2 %sat, transp and TP weighted by the species abundances were calculated to have optimum values for each species; a benthic quality index was then obtained by multiplying the weighted means of O2 %sat, transp and TP by species abundances and dividing the product by the total number of specimens present at each station. A significant correlation was observed between trophic status and the benthic quality index. A good agreement was also observed between the indexes calculated using the large database and the second dataset on small lakes.  相似文献

Tree species assemblages described by landscape-scale forest inventory data both agreed and differed from those described by intensive, site specific studies in Puerto Rico’s highly disturbed northern karst belt. Species assemblages found on hill tops (typified by Tabebuia heterophylla or Bursera simaruba with Coccoloba diversifolia, Licaria parvifolia, and Drypetes alba), abandoned coffee shade (Guarea guidonia, Dendropanax arboreus, Inga vera, and Persea americana), early successional forest (Tetrazygia elaeagnoides with Bucida bursera), and reverting pasture (Spathodea campanulata and Casearia guianensis) fit well with previously described forest types. However, systematic sampling captured more marginal forest and showed greater importance of introduced species that comprise/dominate the forest in these areas, particularly S.␣campanulata. Therefore some assemblages were found to be more mixed and less defined than those observed in small scale intensive studies. Because forest inventory sampling includes less defined forest types and areas that are on the margins of environmental gradients, forest inventory data were less able to show the relationships between detailed forest types and environmental gradients observed in other studies. However, at the landscape level, forest inventory data complements and expands on the findings from intensive studies resulting in a clearer, unbiased view of the region’s forests.  相似文献

In the marine realm, the tropics host an extraordinary diversity of taxa but the drivers underlying the global distribution of marine organisms are still under scrutiny and we still lack an accurate global predictive model. Using a spatial database for 6336 tropical reef fishes, we attempted to predict species richness according to geometric, biogeographical and environmental explanatory variables. In particular, we aimed to evaluate and disentangle the predictive performances of temperature, habitat area, connectivity, mid‐domain effect and biogeographical region on reef fish species richness. We used boosted regression trees, a flexible machine‐learning technique, to build our predictive model and structural equation modeling to test for potential ‘mediation effects’ among predictors. Our model proved to be accurate, explaining 80% of the total deviance in fish richness using a cross‐validated procedure. Coral reef area and biogeographical region were the primary predictors of reef fish species richness, followed by coast length, connectivity, mid‐domain effect and sea surface temperature, with interactions between the region and other predictors. Important indirect effects of water temperature on reef fish richness, mediated by coral reef area, were also identified. The relationship between environmental predictors and species richness varied markedly among biogeographical regions. Our analysis revealed that a few easily accessible variables can accurately predict reef fish species richness. They also highlight concerns regarding ongoing environmental declines, with region‐specific responses to variation in environmental conditions predicting a variable response to anthropogenic impacts.  相似文献

Synopsis Young-of-the-year fish communities in naturally vegetated sites were compared with those inhabiting nearby sites where lakeshore development (i.e., construction of homes, boat docks, and beaches) reduced nearshore macrophyte species richness and abundance. The study was conducted in a 2266 hectare, glacially formed, eutrophic lake in northwestern Iowa during the summers of 1987 and 1988. Study sites were divided into 3 depth zones, and fishes were collected by seining (0–1 m), plexiglass traps (1–2 m), and a nonclosing Tucker trawl (2–3 m). Species richness and total fish abundance were consistently greater in natural than in developed sites in both nearshore (0–1 m) and intermediate (1–2 m) depth zones, but differed little between natural and developed sites in the offshore (2–3 m) depth zone. Nearly 50% of the species sampled, including yellow perch Perca flavescens and bluegill Lepomis macrochirus, inhabited limnetic areas as larvae before migrating inshore as juveniles. Eighteen of the 20 fish species collected as juveniles were in greater abundance in natural than in developed sites. Smallmouth bass Micropterus dolomieui was the only game species consistently found in equal or greater abundance in developed sites. Within all sites, juvenile fishes were generally most abundant where macrophyte abundance and species richness were greatest. Findings from this study demonstrate the importance of nearshore aquatic vegetation to fishes during their first summer of life. If nearshore vegetation beds of lakes continue to be regarded as a nuisance and indiscriminately removed, important fish nursery habitat will be lost. The short-term result will likely be reduced year-class strength of vegetation-dependent species. More importantly, the long-term effects will be changes in fish community richness and composition which will, in turn, alter the lake's fishery.  相似文献

Most traditional "biodiversity" indices have an uncertain ecological interpretation, unfavourable sampling properties, and excessive data requirements. A new index of taxonomic distinctness (the average evolutionary distance between species in an assemblage) has many advantages over traditional measures, but its ecological interpretation remains unclear. We used published behavioural species data in conjunction with bird atlas data to quantify simple functional metrics (the fraction of species engaged in non-competitive interactions, and the average between-species disparity in habitat preferences) for breeding-bird assemblages in Europe and North America. We then analysed correlations of functional metrics with taxonomic distinctness and species richness, respectively. All functional metrics had weak, positive correlations with species richness. In contrast, correlations between functional metrics and taxonomic distinctness ranged from slightly negative to strongly positive, depending on the relative habitat heterogeneity, and on the resource involved in the between-species interaction. Strong positive correlations between taxonomic distinctness and the fraction of interactive species occurred for resources with few producer species per consumer species, and we suggest that taxonomic distinctness is consistently correlated with conservation worth. With its favourable sampling properties and data requirements, this taxonomic distinctness measure is a promising tool for biodiversity research and for environmental monitoring and management.  相似文献

Results of a field survey of southern Wisconsin shallow lakes suggested that watershed (catchment basin) land use has a significant and adverse effect on zooplankton species richness. Zooplankton communities in lakes with no riparian buffer zone, in agriculture-dominated watersheds, contained about half as many species as lakes in least-impact watersheds. In that study, the age of the lake was not taken into account. It is possible that agricultural lakes, often artificial, were so recently-constructed that they had not yet accumulated the equilibrium number of species characteristic of older lakes. In other words, it is possible that the interpretation of the results of the previous study is fatally flawed, if the results were an artifact of lake age, rather than an effect of land use. The major aim of this current study was to determine the ages of agricultural lakes and of lakes in least-impact watersheds, to test for an effect of lake age on zooplankton species richness, using the same sites from the previous study. We used an anova approach to test the null hypothesis that two factors, watershed land use and lake age, had no systematic effect on zooplankton species richness. We determined the age of 35 shallow lakes, using aerial photos, satellite images, and interviews of resource managers and land owners. We identified five artificial agricultural sites and five artificial sites in least-impact prairie watersheds. The artificial sites in this study ranged from 3 to 37 years in age, while natural lakes dated from the melting of the last glacier, about 9500 years ago. Our results suggest, that because artificial lake made up only about a third of the sites, and for the range of lake age and watershed land use, lake age did not have a significant effect on zooplankton species richness, while land use had a highly significant adverse effect. These results pose a larger question for future research. Namely, how quickly do newly-constructed lakes attain the equilibrium number of species seen in the previous study, and what is the quantitative relationship between lake age and zooplankton richness?  相似文献

Species with narrow ranges and specialised traits are most at risk, and the extinction wave is further enhanced by coextinctions. We studied the conservation value and indicator potential of Stratiotes aloides, an aquatic macrophyte that has declined considerably in Europe. Our purpose was to determine whether S. aloides could be used as an indicator of a valuable habitat in terms of macroarthropod diversity and species richness. The potential occurrence of an internationally endangered Stratiotes-habitat specialist, the dragonfly Aeshna viridis, can increase the conservation value of plant colonies. S. aloides beds harboured diverse macroarthropod fauna often containing species of conservation concern, including A. viridis. Stratiotes is a potential indicator of a valuable habitat, and its indicator value is enhanced by the easy identification of the species. However, its use as an indicator of a defined macroarthropod community is limited because no particular community type is connected to it. We suggest that protecting Stratiotes simultaneously conserves valuable arthropod fauna, including A. viridis.  相似文献
