Pincus (1975) derived the null distribution of the likelihood-ratio test statistic for testing that the mean vector of a multivariate normal distribution is zero against the alternative that the mean vector lies in a circular cone. Under the null hypothesis, the likelihood-ratio test statistic has a chi-bar-squared distribution. We extend the results of Pincus by deriving the distribution of the likelihood-ratio test statistic under the alternative hypothesis. In a special case, the distribution is a “noncentral chi-bar-squared” distribution. To our knowledge, this is the first order-restricted testing problem for which the relationship between the null and alternative distributions of the test statistic is similar to the relationship in the linear-model setting. That is, the distribution of the likelihood-ratio test has a central form of a distribution under the null hypothesis and a noncentral form of the same distribution under the alternative.  相似文献

Several procedures have been proposed for testing equality of ordered means. The best-known of these is the likelihood-ratio test introduced by Bartholomew, which possesses generally superior power characteristics to those of its competitors. Difficulties in implementing this test have led to the development of alternative approaches, such as tests based on single and multiple contrasts. Some recent approaches have utilized approximations to the polyhedral cone defining the restricted parameter space, including those of Akkerboom (circular cone) and Mudholkar & McDermott (orthant). This article proposes a class of tests based on an improved orthant approximation to the polyhedral cone. These tests may be viewed as generalizations of the orthogonal contrast test proposed by Mukerjee, Robertson & Wright. Studies of the power functions of several competing tests indicate that the generalized orthogonal contrast tests are effective alternatives to the likelihood-ratio test, especially when the latter is difficult to implement.  相似文献

Tests of homogeneity of normal means with the alternative restricted by an ordering on the means are considered. The simply ordered case, μ1 ≤ μ2 ≤ ··· ≤ μk, and the simple tree ordering, μ1 ≤ μj, for; j= 2, 3,…, k, are emphasized. A modification of the likelihood-ratio test is proposed which is asymptotically equivalent to it but is more robust to violations of the hypothesized orderings. The new test has power at the points satisfying the hypothesized ordering which is similar to that of the likelihood-ratio test provided the degrees of freedom are not too small. The modified test is shown to be unbiased and consistent.  相似文献

It is shown that the locally best invariant test for the existence of outliers for scale parameters of the gamma distribution is given by Bartholomew's test for exponentiality which is the ratio of the sum of squares of the data to the square of the sample mean. The optimality robustness, including null and nonnull robustness of the test is shown. A small simulation study to compare the power among the other eight competitive tests for testing exponentiality is performed. It is seen that the locally best invariant test is not always best but is reasonably good. It is slightly better than Cochran's test and suffers less from the limiting masking effect.  相似文献

In this paper, we are concerned with testing homogeneity against trend. Parsons (1979) considered the exact distribution of the test statistic based on the Wilcoxon type scores. We extend his result to the case of the general scores. Then we give a table of significance probabilities for the Fisher-Yates normal scores. We also study the asymptotic distribution of the test statis-tic based on the general scores under the null hypothesis, and the asymptotic relative efficiency against Bartholomew's likelihood ratio test assuming normality  相似文献

In this article, we use a characterization of the set of sample counts that do not match with the null hypothesis of the test of goodness of fit. Two direct applications arise: first, to instantaneously generate data sets whose corresponding asymptotic P-values belong to a certain pre-defined range; and second, to compute exact P-values for this test in an efficient way. We present both issues before illustrating them by analyzing a couple of data sets. Method's efficiency is also assessed by means of simulations. We focus on Pearson's X 2 statistic but the case of likelihood-ratio statistic is also discussed.  相似文献

An asymptotically maximin most powerful rank test among somewhere asymptotically most powerful linear rank tests with scores generating function cf> is derived for each of the simple order alternative, the simple loop alternative and the simple tree alternative in the k-sample problem. The comparisons of the tests obtained with the rank analogues of the Bartholomew's xv tests are made in terms of local asymptotic relative efficiency. It is found that our tests are better than the rank analogues of the xk tests. Furthermore, the asymptotic equivalence of the ranking by the pooled sample to the ranking in pairs are discuss¬ed and the tests which are asymptotically equivalent to ours are given.  相似文献

This paper examines likelihood-ratio tests concerning the relationships among a fixed number of univariate normal means given a sample of normal observations whose population membership is uncertain. The asymptotic null distributions of likelihood-ratio test statistics are derived for a class of tests including hypotheses which place linear inequality constraints on the normal means. The use of such tests in the interval mapping of quantitative trait loci is addressed.  相似文献

We derive two C(α) statistics and the likelihood-ratio statistic for testing the equality of several correlation coefficients, from k ≥ 2 independent random samples from bivariate normal populations. The asymptotic relationship of the C(α) tests, the likelihood-ratio test, and a statistic based on the normality assumption of Fisher's Z-transform of the sample correlation coefficient is established. A comparative performance study, in terms of size and power, is then conducted by Monte Carlo simulations. The likelihood-ratio statistic is often too liberal, and the statistic based on Fisher's Z-transform is conservative. The performance of the two C(α) statistics is identical. They maintain significance level well and have almost the same power as the other statistics when empirically calculated critical values of the same size are used. The C(α) statistic based on a noniterative estimate of the common correlation coefficient (based on Fisher's Z-transform) is recommended.  相似文献

This study examines extensions of McNemar's Test with multinomial responses, and proposes a linear weighting scheme, based on the distance of the response change, that is applied to one of these extensions (Bowker's test). This weighted version of Bowker's test is then appropriate for ordinal response variables. A Monte Carlo simulation was conducted to examine the Type I error rate of the weighted Bowker's test for a cross-classification table based on a five-category ordinal response scale. The weighted Bowker's test was also applied to a data set involving change in student attitudes towards mathematics. The results of the weighted Bowker's test were compared with the results of Bowker's test applied to the same set of data.  相似文献

After recalling the framework of minimum-contrast estimation, its consistency and its asymptotic normality, we highlight the fact that these results do not require any stationarity or ergodicity assumptions. The asymptotic distribution of the underlying contrast difference test is a weighted sum of independent chi-square variables having one degree of freedom each. We illustrate these results in three contexts: (1) a nonhomogeneous Markov chain with likelihood contrast; (2) a Markov field with coding, pseudolikelihood or likelihood contrasts; (3) a not necessarily Gaussian time series with Whittle's contrast. In contexts (2) and (3), we compare experimentally the power of the likelihood-ratio test with those of other contrast-difference tests.  相似文献

A distribution-free test for comparing several treatments with a control is proposed for one-way classified data. It is advantageous to use the test in life-testing experiments where testing time is expensive. The proposed test has a shorter expected duration than a previously proposed test by Slivka(1970). The optimal allocation of the experimental units to the treatments for two situations are given. In a simulation study the power of the test is compared with the power of Slivka's test. For interval estimation of a proportion, coverage probabilities tend to be too large for “exact” confidence intervals based on inverting the binomial test and too small for the interval based on inverting the Wald large-sample normal test (i.e., sample proportion ± z-score × estimated standard error). Wilson's suggestion of inverting the related score test with null rather than estimated standard error yields coverage probabilities close to nominal confidence levels, even for very small sample sizes. The 95% score interval has similar behavior as the adjusted Wald interval obtained after adding two “successes” and two “failures” to the sample. In elementary courses, with the score and adjusted Wald methods it is unnecessary to provide students with awkward sample size guidelines.  相似文献

Student's t test as well as Wilcoxon's rank-sum test may be inefficient in situations where treatments bring about changes in both location and scale. In order to rectify this situation, O'Brien (1988, Journal of the American Statistical Association 83, 52-61) has proposed two new statistics, the generalized t and generalized rank-sum procedures, which may be much more powerful than their traditional counterparts in such situations. Recently, however, Blair and Morel (1991, Statistics in Medicine in press) have shown that referencing these new statistics to standard F tables as recommended by O'Brien results in inflations of Type I errors. This paper provides tables of critical values which do not produce such inflations. Use of these new critical values results in Type I error rates near nominal levels for the generalized t statistic and slightly conservative rates for the generalized rank-sum test. In addition to the critical values, some new power results are given for the generalized tests.  相似文献

Bartholomew's statistics for testing homogeneity of normal means with ordered alternatives have null distributions which are mixtures of chi-squared or beta distributions according as the variances are known or not. If the sample sizes are not equal, the mixing coefficients can be difficult to compute. For a simple order and a simple tree ordering, approximations to the significance levels of these tests have been developed which are based on patterns in the weight sets. However, for a moderate or large number of means, these approximations can be tedious to implement. Employing the same approach that was used in the development of these approximations, two-moment chisquared and beta approximations are derived for these significance levels. Approximations are also developed for the testing situation in which the order restriction is the null hypothesis. Numerical studies show that in each of the cases the two-moment approximation is quite satisfactory for most practical purposes.  相似文献

This paper considers a likelihood ratio test for testing hypotheses defined by non-oblique closed convex cones, satisfying the so called iteration projection property, in a set of k normal means. We obtain the critical values of the test using the Chi-Bar-Squared distribution. The obtuse cones are introduced as a particular class of cones which are non-oblique with every one of their faces. We study the problem of testing: H0 : μ ∈ P against H1 : μ ? P, based on a random sample of N observations from a p-dimensional normal distribution Np(μ, Σ) with Σ > 0 and P a closed convex positively homogeneous set. We develop the likelihood-ratio test (LRT) for this problem. We show that the union-intersection principle leads to a test equivalent to the LRT. It also gives a large class of tests which are shown to be admissible by Stein's theorem (1956). Finally, we give the α-level cutoff points for the LRT.  相似文献

The inverse Gaussian family of non negative, skewed random variables is analytically simple, and its inference theory is well known to be analogous to the normal theory in numerous ways. Hence, it is widely used for modeling non negative positively skewed data. In this note, we consider the problem of testing homogeneity of order restricted means of several inverse Gaussian populations with a common unknown scale parameter using an approach based on the classical methods, such as Fisher's, for combining independent tests. Unlike the likelihood approach which can only be readily applied to a limited number of restrictions and the settings of equal sample sizes, this approach is applicable to problems involving a broad variety of order restrictions and arbitrary sample size settings, and most importantly, no new null distributions are needed. An empirical power study shows that, in case of the simple order, the test based on Fisher's combination method compares reasonably with the corresponding likelihood ratio procedure.  相似文献

The crossover trial design (AB/BA design) is often used to compare the effects of two treatments in medical science because it performs within‐subject comparisons, which increase the precision of a treatment effect (i.e., a between‐treatment difference). However, the AB/BA design cannot be applied in the presence of carryover effects and/or treatments‐by‐period interaction. In such cases, Balaam's design is a more suitable choice. Unlike the AB/BA design, Balaam's design inflates the variance of an estimate of the treatment effect, thereby reducing the statistical power of tests. This is a serious drawback of the design. Although the variance of parameter estimators in Balaam's design has been extensively studied, the estimators of the treatment effect to improve the inference have received little attention. If the estimate of the treatment effect is obtained by solving the mixed model equations, the AA and BB sequences are excluded from the estimation process. In this study, we develop a new estimator of the treatment effect and a new test statistic using the estimator. The aim is to improve the statistical inference in Balaam's design. Simulation studies indicate that the type I error of the proposed test is well controlled, and that the test is more powerful and has more suitable characteristics than other existing tests when interactions are substantial. Approximations to exact conditional inference for location familles are considered. Methods which improve the standard normal and chi-squared approximations to the conditional distributions of pivots arising in standard large-sample theory are discussed, including the use of parameter transformations for parametrization-dependent pivots, and the use of scaling factors for the likelihood-ratio statistic.
