Noil hemp fiber‐reinforced polypropylene composites were fabricated using intermixer and injection molding machines. X‐ray microtomography and Weibull statistical methods were employed to characterize the aspect ratio distributions of noil hemp fibers in the polypropylene matrices. The influence of fiber content (0–40 wt%) and compatibilizer addition (5 wt%) on IFSS (interfacial shear strengths) was evaluated by means of the modified Bowyer and Bader model. The evaluated IFSSs decreased from 9.7 to 7.2 MPa as the fiber content increased from 10 to 40 wt%. Also, the outcomes indicated increases to IFSSs for the maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAPP)‐coupled composites than uncoupled ones. They were used to predict theoretical tensile strength of the composites. A good agreement has been found between the theoretical and the experimental tensile strengths of composites indicating that the developed model has excellent capability to predict the tensile strength of noil hemp fiber reinforced polypropylene composites. Ultimately, the influences of interfacial shear strength; fiber strength and fiber aspect ratio were investigated using the developed model to predict composite tensile strengths. POLYM. In this study, tri-layered composites were prepared by reinforcing poly-lactic acid (PLA) nano-hydroxyapatite (n-HA) (1 and 5 wt%) and 20 mol% continuous phosphate glass fibers (PGF). Initially, the effect of addition of 1 and 5% n-HA on the structural, thermal, mechanical, and thermo-mechanical properties of 100% PLA was investigated. With 5 wt% n-HA addition the tensile modulus (TM), flexural modulus (FM), tensile strength (TS), and flexural strength (FS) of 100% PLA was improve by 14.9, 47.4, 6, and 32.9%, respectively. Whereas, the un-notched impact strength of the nanocomposites suffer 2% deterioration. However, T g decreased by 0.3°C and T c increased by 10°C as 5 wt% n-HA was added to 100% PLA. Afterwards, the 5% n-HA/PLA composite were reinforced with 20 mol% continuous PGF and the TM, FM, TS, and FS of the tri-layered composites were 162.6, 412.5, 28.4, and 157.4% higher as compared to 100%PLA. Furthermore, the storage modulus of the 1% n-HA-filled composites was 500 MPa lower than 100%PLA, while 5 wt% n-HA-filled composites showed similar storage modulus as 100% PLA. 5 wt% n-HA-filled composite showed the highest peak of loss modulus which may be attribute to the chain segment of PLA matrix after the incorporation of HA. Thus, n-HA and PGF reinforcement resulted in improved mechanical properties of the composites and have great potential as biodegradable bone fixation device with enhanced load-bearing ability.  相似文献

Indirect resin composites used in indirect restorations have been used as alternative methods to avoid the negative effects of a direct application. The composition and structure of these are similar to a direct composite. Several authors have discussed the elution monomer from resin composites because it is a crucial factor in optimizing the physical properties and biocompatibility of resin composites. The aim of this study was to compare the elution of monomers from different resin composites using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Indirect composites including Signum, Gradia, and Solidex, and direct composite Filtek Ultimate were used. The samples (2 x 5 mm) were prepared and polymerized for 20 seconds with a light-emitting diode unit. A secondary curing was then applied to the indirect resin composites. After fabrication, each sample was immediately immersed in a 75 wt% ethanol/water solution and analyzed by HPLC. The obtained data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD (p < 0.05). Residual monomers were eluted from indirect and direct resin composites and the amount of eluted monomers increased over time. The highest mean concentrations of residual Bis-GMA, UDMA, TEGDMA, and HEMA were detected with the Filtek Ultimate (2,342 µM), Solidex (7,908 µM), Signum (2.8 µM), and Filtek Ultimate (9.7 µM), respectively. The highest amount of eluted monomer concentrations detected was viewed as critical for toxic reactions in human cells.  相似文献

Fiber-reinforced composites based on natural fibers are promising alternatives for materials made of metal or synthetic polymers. However, the inherent inhomogeneity of natural fibers limits the quality of the respective composites. Man-made cellulose fibers (MMCFs) prepared from cellulose solutions via wet or dry-jet wet spinning processes can overcome these limitations. Herein, MMCFs are used to prepare single fiber epoxy composites and UD composites with 20, 30, 40, and 60 wt% fiber loads. The mechanical properties increase gradually with fiber loading. Young's modulus is improved three times while tensile strength doubles at a loading of 60 wt%. Raman spectroscopy is employed to follow conformational changes of the cellulose chains within the fibers upon mechanical deformation of the composites. The shift of the characteristic Raman band under strain indicates the deformation mechanisms in the fiber. Provided stress transfer occurs through the interface, it is a direct measure of the fiber-matrix interaction, which is investigated herein. The shift rate of the 1095 cm−1 band decreases in single fiber composites compared to the neat fibers and continues to decrease as the fiber loading increased.  相似文献

In this study, the influence of coupling agent concentration (0 and 3 wt%), wood fiber content (50, 60, 70, and 80 wt%), and size (40–60, 80–100, and 160–180 mesh) on the mechanical properties of wood/high-density-polyethylene (HDPE) composites (WPCs) was investigated. WPC samples were prepared with poplar wood-flour, HDPE, and polyethylene maleic anhydride copolymer (MAPE) as coupling agent. It was found that the tensile properties and the flexural properties of the composites were improved by the addition of 3 wt% MAPE, and the improved interfacial adhesion was well confirmed by SEM micrographs. It was also observed that the best mechanical properties of wood/HDPE composites can be reached with larger particle size in the range studied, while too-small particle size was adverse for the mechanical properties of wood/HDPE composites. Moreover, the tensile modulus, tensile strength, and flexural strength of WPCs decreased with the increase in fiber content from 50 to 80 wt%; the flexural modulus of WPCs increased with the increase in fiber content from 50 to 70 wt% and then decreased as the fiber content reached 80 wt%. The variances in property performance are helpful for the end-user to choose an appropriate coupling agent (MAPE) concentration, wood fiber content, and particle size based on performance needs and cost considerations.  相似文献

We successfully added bamboo and glass fibers into bisphenol A‐aniline based benzoxazine (BA‐a) resin by hot‐pressing method. In order to improve the interfacial adhesion between bamboo fibers and the matrix, bamboo fibers were pretreated in 6 wt% NaOH solutions for 12 h. The results showed alkali‐treatment had a positive effect on mechanical properties of the composites at both room and elevated temperatures (60°C, 110°C, 160°C, and 210°C). Due to the incorporation of glass fibers, the bamboo/glass reinforced‐polybenzoxazine hybrid composites exhibited highest strength and modulus among all samples and had high residual mechanical properties at elevated temperatures (residual mechanical properties refers to the ratio of strength and modulus of the composites at elevated temperatures to that measured at room temperature). The fractured surface morphologies of the composites were observed by scanning electron microscope. The results showed with the increase of temperature, the debonding and fiber pull‐out became apparent, and the matrix softening could be clearly observed at 210°C. In addition, thermal and thermomechanical properties of neat benzoxazine and the composites were also investigated through thermogravimetric analysis and dynamic mechanical analyzer, respectively. In execution of obtaining outstanding functional materials that possess the features of advanced mechanical behaviour, high thermal resistance and enhanced gamma radiation shielding properties, this present article aimed to boost qualitatively and quantitatively the desired performances of dicyanate ester of bisphenol-A/bisphenol-A based benzoxazine resin using hybrid fibers consisting of kevlar fibers and basalt fibers. To achieve this, the desired amounts of the hybrid fibers were initially surface treated using the silane coupling agent technique and then incorporated within the blend matrix with a total weight selected to be 40 wt%. According to the mechanical results, a noteworthy increase in the flexural and impact strength properties of the reinforced hybrid composites was chiefly observed as compared to the unfilled samples’ properties. Based on the thermal stability studies, the reinforced hybrid composites also showed excellent thermal resistances. The hybrid composites’ shielding properties, which were evaluated using a Cobalt-60 (60Co) as an irradiation source, revealed outstanding gamma-radiation shielding enhancements. The scanning electron microscope confirmed that the improvements in the investigated properties were essentially ascribed to the good dispersion and interfacial adhesion of the two high-performance hybrid fibers within the blend matrix with respect to their advanced properties. Therefore, the enhanced mechanical, thermal and nuclear shielding properties promote the use of the as-developed hybrid composites in domestic and industrial applications.  相似文献

A novel direct coagulation casting via controlled release of high valence counter ions (DCC-HVCI) method was applied to prepare the alumina fiber-reinforced silica matrix composites with improved mechanical properties. In this method, the silica suspension could be rapidly coagulated via controlled release of calcium ions from calcium iodate and pH shift by hydrolysis of glycerol diacetate (GDA) at an elevated temperature. The influence of tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAOH) dispersant amount, volume fraction and calcium iodate concentration on the rheological properties of suspensions was investigated. Additionally, the effect of alumina fiber contents on the mechanical properties of alumina fiber-reinforced silica matrix composites was studied systematically. It was found that the stable suspension of 50 vol% solid loading could be prepared by adding 2.5 wt% TMAOH at room temperature. The addition of 0–15 wt% alumina fibers had no obvious effect on the viscosity of the silica suspension. The controlled coagulation of the suspension could be achieved by adding 6.5 g L−1 calcium iodate and 1.0 wt% GDA after treating at 70 °C for 30 min. Compressive strength of green bodies with homogeneous microstructure was in the range of 2.1–3.1 MPa. Due to the fiber pull-out and fracture behaviors, the mechanical properties of alumina fiber-reinforced composites improved remarkably. The flexural strength of the composite with 10 wt% alumina fibers sintered at 1350 °C was about 7 times of that without fibers. The results indicate that this approach could provide a promising route to prepare complex-shaped fiber-reinforced ceramic matrix composites with uniform microstructure and high mechanical properties.  相似文献

Short glass fibers were added to poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC)/wood flour composites as reinforcement agents. Unnotched and notched impact strength of PVC/wood flour/glass fiber hybrid composites could be increased significantly without losing flexural properties by adding type L glass fibers and over 40% of PVC. There was no such improvement when using type S glass fiber. The impact strength of hybrid composites increased along with the increment of the type L glass fiber content at a 50% PVC content. At high PVC contents, impact fracture surfaces were characterized by wood particle, glass fiber breakage and pullout, whereas interfacial debonding was the dominant fracture mode at higher filler concentrations. The significant improvement in impact strength of hybrid composites was attributed to the formation of the three‐dimensional network glass fiber architecture between type L glass fibers and wood flour.  相似文献

Polymer matrix composites are used in automobile, structure and aerospace industries due to their light weight and high strength. The present research has an aim to reinforce locally developed silica nanoparticles and glass fibers in unsaturated polyester to produce polymer-based hybrid composites. Composites were synthesized by hand lay-up method with 1, 2, 3 and 4 wt% of silica sand nanoparticles and glass fiber. Mechanical tests like tensile, impact and micro-hardness were performed on the obtained polymer hybrid composites. The results of mechanical properties of the hybrid polymer matrix composites revealed an increasing trend. The SEM analysis was performed on the developed and fractured tensile testing samples. The SEM analysis showed the presence of silica nanoparticles in the samples and pulling action of fibers were seen under fractured tensile tests. The pulling actions of fibers from polymer matrix delayed the fractured mechanism and enhanced the mechanical properties. Silica nanoparticles filled the cavities generated during tensile test and extensive enhancement was revealed in tensile as well as impact energy. Toughness of the hybrid composite was also enhanced as a result. The thermal properties of the hybrid polymer composites were analyzed using thermogravimetric analysis. Thermal stability of the composite has been marginally increased with increasing wt% of reinforcement.  相似文献

This paper presents the effects of multi‐walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) as reinforcing agent on some properties of natural fiber/polypropylene composites. In the sample preparation, MWCNT contents and fiber types (bagasse stalk and poplar) were used as variable parameters. The composites with different MWCNT contents were fabricated by melt compounding in a twin‐screw extruder and then by injection molding. The mass ratio of the wood flour to polymer was 40/60 (w/w). The mechanical properties of composites in terms of tensile, flexural, and Izod impact strength were evaluated. The morphology of the specimens was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. Based on the findings of this study, it appears that mechanical properties reached the maximum when 2.5 wt% MWCNT were used. However, addition of 3.5 wt% MWCNT could not enhance the mechanical properties considerably. TEM micrographs showed that at high level of MWCNT loading (3.5 wt%) increased population of MWCNT leads to agglomeration and stress transfer gets blocked. The mechanical properties of composites filled with poplar fibers were generally greater than bagasse stalk composites. POLYM. The dynamic mechanical properties of randomly oriented intimately mixed hybrid composites based on pineapple leaf fibers (PALF) and glass fibers (GF) in unsaturated polyester (PER) matrix were investigated. The PALFs have high‐specific strength and improve the mechanical properties of the PER matrix. In this study, the volume ratio of the two fibers was varied by incorporating small amounts of GF such as PALF/GF, 90/10, 80/20, 70/30, and 50/50, keeping the total fiber loading constant at 40 wt%. The dynamic modulus of the compositeswas found to increase on GF addition. The intimately mixed (IM) hybrid composites with PALF/GF, 80/20 (0.2 Vf GF) showed highest E′ values and least damping. Interestingly, the impact strength of the composites was minimum at this volume ratio. The composites with 0.46 Vf GF or PALF/GF (50/50) showed maximum damping behavior and highest impact strength. The results were compared with hybrid composites of different layering patterns such as GPG (GF skin and PALF core) and PGP (PALF skin and GF core). IM and GPG hybrid composites are found more effective than PGP. The activation energy values for the relaxation processes in different composites were calculated. The overall results showed that hybridization with GF enhanced the performance properties. POLYM. COMPOS., 2010. © 2009 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

This study intends to produce plasma polymer thin films of γ-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (γ-GPS) on glass fibers in order to improve interfacial adhesion of glass fiber-reinforced epoxy composites. A low frequency (LF) plasma generator was used for the plasma polymerization of γ-GPS on the surface of glass fibers at different plasma powers and exposure times. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and SEM analyses of plasma polymerized glass fibers were conducted to obtain some information about surface properties of glass fibers. Interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) values and interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of composites reinforced with plasma polymerized glass fiber were evaluated. The ILSS and IFSS values of non-plasma polymerized glass fiber-reinforced epoxy composite were increased 110 and 53%, respectively, after plasma polymerization of γ-GPS at a plasma power of 60 W for 30 min. The improvement of interfacial adhesion was also confirmed by SEM observations of fractured surface of the composites.  相似文献

The incorporation of natural fibers with polymer matrix composites (PMCs) has increasing applications in many fields of engineering due to the growing concerns regarding the environmental impact and energy crisis. The objective of this work is to examine the effect of fiber orientation and fiber content on properties of sisal‐jute‐glass fiber‐reinforced polyester composites. In this experimental study, sisal‐jute‐glass fiber‐reinforced polyester composites are prepared with fiber orientations of 0° and 90° and fiber volume of sisal‐jute‐glass fibers are in the ratio of 40:0:60, 0:40:60, and 20:20:60 respectively, and the experiments were conducted. The results indicated that the hybrid composites had shown better performance and the fiber orientation and fiber content play major role in strength and water absorption properties. The morphological properties, internal structure, cracks, and fiber pull out of the fractured specimen during testing are also investigated by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. PET‐glass fiber composites were prepared by melt mixing of recycled PET with chopped glass fibers (15, 20, and 30 wt%) and their degree of dispersion was assessed by scanning electron microscopy. Rotational rheometry was employed to analyze the interfacial shear strength between the fibers and polymer matrix in the molten state. The composite containing 30 wt% of glass fibers revealed a moderate G′ secondary plateau; hence strong fiber‐matrix interactions were confirmed. Results of mechanical testing were in a good accordance with structural and rheological measurements. The higher rate of mixing under production‐scale conditions resulted in lower fiber‐matrix adhesion and in a similar level of fiber dispersion as compared to the same mixture compounded on pilot‐plant scale. Thermal characterization of the composites was performed by differential scanning calorimetry and total crystalline fraction was analyzed. POLYM. The present work was aimed to investigate the individual and hybrid reinforcement effect of multiscale fillers [glass fibers (GF)/multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)] in polypropylene (PP) matrix. The MWCNT content in the hybrid composites was varied from 0.5 to 5 wt%, and glass fiber fraction was fixed as 20 wt%. The morphology of nano and hybrid composite revealed reasonable dispersion of MWCNTs and glass fibers in the matrix. At a MWCNT content of 3 wt%, the optimum tensile properties for the hybrid composites were achieved and beyond which it declined due to agglomeration effects as revealed by transmission electron microscopy. A comparative study of the experimental and predicted values of moduli of nano, micro, and hybrid composites using various micromechanical models was conducted. The simultaneous incorporation of MWCNTs and glass fibers in PP restricted the mobility of polymer chains as indicated by the increase in storage modulus and rise in glass transition temperature obtained by dynamic mechanical analysis. The differential scanning calorimetry studies indicated that the inclusion of 2 wt% of MWCNTs increased the crystallinity of PP from 58.2 to 69.1% in hybrid composites. The Avrami and Mo models were used to explore nonisothermal crystallization kinetics, and Mo model was in close agreement with the experimental results. The sorption behavior of the composites revealed that the formation of immobilized regions developed by the simultaneous inclusion of micro and nano fillers delayed the transport of the solvent. J. Rice straw (RS) polypropylene (PP) composites were prepared in the different ratios of 10:90, 20:80, 30:70, 40:60 and 50:50 (RS wt% : PP wt%) by extrusion moulding and hot press compression technique and investigated the mechanical properties like tensile strength (TS), bending strength (BS), impact strength (IS) and elongations at break (Eb%) of the composites. RS was soaked in the different ratios of urea solution and it was observed that 1% urea-treated RS content composites exhibited better mechanical properties. Gamma-irradiated RSPP composites showed superior performance. Water uptake and degradation studies of composites were also monitored.  相似文献

The prepreg of continuous glass fiber reinforced poly(phenylene sulphide) (PPS) was prepared using the powder impregnation technique and cut into the pellets, in which the length of glass fibers was the same as the pellets. After injection molding, the mechanical properties were tested and the effects of the pellet length, fiber content, and thermal treatment on the mechanical properties at different temperatures were studied. It is found that the tensile strength and flexural strength of 6‐mm pellet sample are slightly higher than that of 3‐ and 12‐mm pellet samples. The tensile strength, flexural strength, and modulus decrease significantly with increasing the temperature. The notched Izod impact strength at 85ºC is higher than both at 25ºC and 205ºC. At 205ºC, the glass fiber reinforced PPS composites can still keep better mechanical properties. When the fiber content ranges from 0 to 50%, the mechanical properties increase with increasing the fiber contents at different temperatures, except the notched Izod impact strength do not further increase at 145 and 205ºC with raising the fiber content from 40 to 50%. Thermal treatment could improve the mechanical properties of the composites at higher serving temperature. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2010  相似文献

Triglyceride oils derived from plants have been used to synthesize several different monomers for use in structural applications. These monomers have been found to form polymers with a wide range of physical properties. They exhibit tensile moduli in the 1–2 GPa range and glass transition temperatures in the range 70–120 °C, depending on the particular monomer and the resin composition. Composite materials were manufactured utilizing these resins and produced a variety of durable and strong materials. At low glass fiber content (35 wt %), composites produced from acrylated epoxidized soybean oil by resin transfer molding displayed a tensile modulus of 5.2 GPa, a flexural modulus of 9 GPa, a tensile strength of 129 MPa, and flexural strength of 206 MPa. At higher fiber contents (50 wt %) composites produced from acrylated epoxidized soybean oil displayed tensile and compression moduli of 24.8 GPa each, and tensile and compressive strengths of 463.2 and 302.6 MPa, respectively. In addition to glass fibers, natural fibers such as flax and hemp were used. Hemp composites of 20% fiber content displayed a tensile strength of 35 MPa and a tensile modulus of 4.4 GPa. The flexural modulus was ∼2.6 GPa and the flexural strength was in the range 35.7–51.3 MPa, depending on the test conditions. The flax composite materials had tensile and flexural strengths in the ranges 20–30 and 45–65 MPa, respectively. The properties exhibited by both the natural- and synthetic fiber-reinforced composites can be combined through the production of “hybrid” composites. These materials combine the low cost of natural fibers with the high performance of synthetic fibers. Their properties lie between those displayed by the all-glass and all-natural composites. Characterization of the polymer properties also presents opportunities for improvement through genetic engineering technology. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
