A method is described for obtaining the propagation coefficients and field patterns of a large number of modes for microstrip with a minimum of computational effort. The method uses a discrete space-domain formulation to calculate a large number of higher-order modes in a way which leads to their fast location and which ensures that node modes are missed. This includes those pairs of modes with complex conjugate propagation constants of the type reported for finline, as well as the normal evanescent modes. In addition, the characteristic impedance of microstrip is efficiently calculated. The results presented are obtained using the generally accepted power-current definition and are in agreement with other published results  相似文献

An improvement to a recently reported theory for the analysis of the pattern and impedance loci of microstrip antennas is developed. It yields a theory which is simple and inexpensive to apply. The fields in the interior of the antennas are characterized in terms of a discrete set of modes. The poles corresponding to these modes are complex and depend on the losses in the antenna. The representation of the fields in terms of these modes is rigorous only for a bona fide cavity with no copper loss. The proper shift in the complex poles due to the addition of copper and radiative losses is approximated by lumping the latter two together with the dielectric loss to form an effective loss tangent. By so doing, it is found that the resulting expressions for impedance of the microstrip antenna are in good agreement with measured results for all modes and feed locations. The theory is applied to the evaluation of impedance variation with feed location, to multiport analysis, and to the design of circularly polarized microstrip antennas.  相似文献

This paper discusses the excitation and physical validity of both surface-wave and space-wave leaky modes on microstrip lines. This is done by analyzing the discrete modal spectrum excited by a realistic source on or near an infinite microstrip line. A semi-analytical three-dimensional (3-D) Green's function is used for this purpose, which provides the current excited on the conducting strip due to the source. The 3-D Green's function is in the form of a spectral integration (inverse Fourier transform) in the longitudinal wavenumber plane. The poles of the integrand directly determine the excitation amplitudes of the modes on the structure that are launched by the source. The integrand also has different types of branch points, and the location of the poles on the various Riemann sheets is used to determine the physical significance of the leaky modes. Although the theory presented here is illustrated for a microstrip line, the conclusions apply in general to open printed-circuit structures  相似文献

A novel circularly polarized (CP) microstrip antenna with a single coaxial feed is introduced. The antenna consists of two layers, each radiating fields which at the zenith are perpendicular to each other with 90° phase difference. The CP bandwidth is substantially higher than that of the previously reported CP microstrip antennas with two nearly degenerate modes. In principle, a perfect CP radiation is feasible without the input impedance mismatch. The CP design procedure is independent of the feed location  相似文献

There has been a resurgence of interest in the propagation characteristics of open integrated microstrip transmission lines. This is due in part to the discovery of diverse propagation regimes for higher-order modes on open lines. In contrast to the dominant EH0 mode, three distinct propagation regimes exist for higher-order modes on microstrip transmission lines. In this paper, a rigorous spectral-domain integral equation formulation is used to analyze propagation in all three regimes. This formulation provides a clear physical picture of the different propagation regimes based on the mathematical location of poles and branch points in the complex spectral-variable plane. As an illustration, the formulation is applied to the case of an isolated uniform microstrip transmission line. The integral equation is discretized via the method of moments, and entire-domain basis functions incorporating suitable edge behavior are utilized to provide convergence with relatively few terms. The results obtained are compared to the results of other workers, and good agreement is observed  相似文献

A simple theory based on the cavity model is developed to analyze microstrip antennas excited by a slot in the ground plane. By using an equivalent magnetic current source at the feed, the electric field under the patch is obtained in terms of a set of cavity modes. In particular, the loci of the slot feed location for achieving the circular polarization and the input impedance are computed and found to be in excellent agreement with the experimentally measured results. Simple but surprisingly accurate formulas for slot-fed circularly polarized microstrip antennas are derived and compared with those for probe-fed counterparts  相似文献

The continuous radiation spectrum of an open microstrip transmission line and its nonspectral leaky modes are conceptualized through a transform-domain integral-operator formulation and relevant spectral analysis. The radiation spectrum is identified with branch cuts in the axial wavenumber plane, which constrain the migration of branch-point singularities in the transverse wavenumber plane. Leaky-wave modes occur only when the branch cuts in the axial wavenumber plane are violated. The relationship among spectral radiation modes, nonspectral leaky-wave modes, and branch cuts in the axial wavenumber plane is discussed. The influence of branch cuts in the axial wavenumber plane upon the location of branch points in the transverse wavenumber plane is detailed, and a rationale is offered for the choice branch cuts in the latter plane. The formulation is applicable to a wide class of open conducting or dielectric waveguides  相似文献

The existence of complex modes in electrically shielded suspended coupled microstrip lines has been studied extensively, and the results are presented. A rigorous full-wave spectral-domain approach (SDA) with a newly proposed and tested set of basis functions can efficiently and accurately determine the propagation characteristics of the dominant, higher-order, and complex modes for planar or quasi-planar transmission lines. These basis functions are validated by comparing the convergence study of field solutions with those obtained by various sets of preconditioned bases and by the unconditioned subdomain ones. Excellent agreement is obtained for the propagation constants and the normalized complex longitudinal and transverse current distributions on conducting strips for the strongly coupled microstrip lines. For all the particular case studies discussed, it is shown that the complex modes may exist in all the shielded suspended coupled microstrip lines, even when the substrate dielectric constant is low. Theoretical results for the fundamental, higher-order, evanescent, and complex modes are presented for suspended coupled microstrip lines  相似文献

The possible existence of complex modes in lossless shielded microstrip lines was investigated using the singular integral equation method. The method is used for the analysis of three lossless shielded microstrip line structures with different substrate permittivities. We have formulated exact solutions of the normal modes in the microstrip patch antenna possessing circular geometry. The theory makes use of a new Green's function in conjunction with current potential analysis. The calculations demonstrate that the magnetic wall confinement boundary conditions as formulated in past theories hold approximately true if the surface wave loss is minimal compared to other losses: dielectric loss, conductor loss, and radiation loss. For practical path antennas the normal modes are not confined locally near the microstrip patch. Rather, they are composed of propagation surface waves which extend far beyond the region containing the patch antenna. We term these normal modes as leaky modes, since they resemble the leaky modes found in dielectric image guides. Measurements by us of the radiation mode frequencies and the intrinsic Q-values of the microstrip patch antennas compared very well with theory  相似文献

The well known bound modes of open microstrip do not constitute a complete spectrum, for, continuous radiation and localized (reactive) modes are excited at discontinuities in microstrip circuits and antennas. This part of the spectrum has not been investigated before so that, up to date, radiation problems in microstrip are being investigated by nonmodal methods, such as the moment method. We derive here for the first time the complete spectrum of open microstrip, including one or more bound modes and a continuum, and demonstrate its straightforward application to a practical problem such as the excitation by a cylindrical probe of finite radius. Application of Lorentz's reciprocity principle is now possible in complete analogy to the problem of excitation of a close waveguide by a probe. The properties of the Koch island fractal boundary microstrip patch antenna are presented. The behavior at the fundamental mode and the existence of high-order modes that exhibit localized current density distributions is discussed. The main features are the size reduction of the patch resonating at the fundamental frequency when compared to Euclidean-shaped patches, and the application of localized modes in designing microstrip patch antennas with directive patterns.  相似文献

The numerical solution of circular microstrip antenna is carried out using the method of moment. The effect of the probe position, The dielectric permittivity of the substrate, and the substrate thickness on the radiation pattern and the mode excitation efficiency are studied. It is found that the probe position and the patch size can be used to control the mode excitation efficiency, and heigher order modes can be generated using only one feed location. Also, the finite ground plane can be used to improve the symmetry of the radiation patterns. The technique is general and can be used to investigate other scattering and antenna problems involving axisymmetric geometries.  相似文献

A novel type of dual-mode microstrip bandpass filter using degenerate modes of a dual-mode microstrip square loop resonator with capacitively loaded open-loop arms is proposed. Such a dual-mode bandpass filter with a 0.75% bandwidth at the center frequency of 1.603 GHz is designed and fabricated to demonstrate the design of reduced-size microstrip filters. It is shown that the proposed filter has a size reduction of about 59% at the same center frequency, as compared with the dual-mode bandpass filters such as microstrip patch, cross-slotted patch, square loop and ring resonator filter.  相似文献
