Cherrybark oak stump sprout survival and development five years following plantation thinning in the lower Mississippi alluvial valley,USA 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Cherrybark oak (Quercus pagoda Raf.) stump sprouts were studied for 5 years in a 30-year-old plantation thinned to 70–75% stocking (light thinning) and
45–50% stocking (heavy thinning). Sprouting success, survival, number of sprouts per stump, and sprout height differed little
between thinning treatments throughout the 5-year study period. Pre-harvest tree d.b.h. also had no influence on sprout survival
and development. A 2-year drought reduced survival and may have influenced sprout development. Sprout clump survival dropped
from 90% 1 year following thinning to 46% 3 years after thinning. Although sprout height averaged 337 cm 5 years after thinning,
annual sprout growth decreased from 166 cm the first year after thinning to 33 cm in each of the last 2 growing seasons. Results
indicated that bottomland hardwood regeneration evaluation models may underestimate the potential of oak stump sprouts to
contribute to pre-harvest regeneration assessments. Further study in the role of stump sprouts to regenerate bottomland oak
species is needed.

Abstract Effects of stump harvesting on the properties of surface soil and on the density, structure and growth of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) stands were estimated in a field trial in western Finland. The experiment was established in 1977 and measured in 2010. Stems and logging residues were harvested after clear-cutting, and stumps were lifted and removed from half of the experimental area. Sixteen plots were planted with pine seedlings and 16 with spruce. The main effects of stump harvesting were improved survival of planted trees and an increase in natural regeneration. No clearly negative effects were noted in the stand development. Stump harvesting had no or minimal effects on the properties of the organic layer and those of the 0- to 10-cm mineral-soil layer. Soil properties did not differ between tree species. Pine production was higher on plots with stump removal compared to plots without soil treatment. 相似文献

Subtropical forests in the Ryukyu Islands have been degraded by silvicultural practices, and thus their structural attributes
are being shifted to other states dominated by a few tree species. This study clarified the mechanisms of the change, and
examined the effect of clear logging on the resilience of a subtropical forest. Sprouting regeneration and typhoon disturbance
were introduced into an individual-based model, SEIB-DGVM, for describing stand development and succession. The regeneration
dynamics from young secondary to old-growth stands were reproduced fairly well with the model. Sprouting recruitment produced
high stem density at the beginning of stand development, which caused a self-thinning trajectory following the −3/2 power
law. In the late development stage after 70 years, tree species diversity fluctuated because of the regenerative response
of sprouting species and the facilitatory effect of typhoon disturbance on the coexistence of subordinate species. The death
of canopy trees because of typhoon disturbances reduced the dominance of Castanopsis sieboldii, and depressed its dominance in the understory. Consequently, the understory species could establish by virtue of fallen
canopy trees, and tree species diversity increased at the stand level. Clear logging experiments in the model revealed that
species diversity deteriorated, especially in the stand dominated by sprouting species. Resilience of subtropical forests
was determined by initial species composition before clear logging. Our simulation results suggest that repeated logging drives
subtropical forests with high species diversity to a stand monopolized by C. sieboldii. 相似文献

Abstract This paper reports the early effects of stump height on the growth and natural pruning of potential crop trees after precommercial thinning of a young stand of naturally regenerated beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) in Denmark. The experiment comprises five treatments based on combinations of three grades of precommercial thinning and three stump heights. Treatments include the unthinned control, thinning only of whips and wolf trees (using low stumps), and thinning for potential crop trees using low, medium or high stumps. All treatments were replicated three times. Stump heights averaged 10, 90 or 230 cm, respectively. Pretreatment stem number (live trees) varied from 17,500 to 41,000 ha?1. In the potential crop tree treatment, post-treatment stem number ranged from 4750 to 9500 ha?1. Following two growth seasons, the quantity of stump regrowth increased with increasing stump height, the rate of stump regrowth increased with increasing stump height, the diameter growth of potential crop trees increased with decreasing stump height, the increase in stand height did not depend on stump height or post-treatment stem number, and the natural pruning of potential crop trees increased with increasing stump height. It remains to be seen whether these trends hold in the long run, and whether additional economic return from the increase in wood quality with increasing stump height compensates for the reduction in diameter growth. 相似文献

A major impediment to the sustainable management of tropical dry forests in Bolivia is the scarcity of natural regeneration of commercial timber tree species. Where regeneration is present, true seedlings of many species are outnumbered by vegetative sprouts from roots, broken stems, and the stumps of felled trees. This study evaluates the importance of resprouts promoted by logging operations for the regeneration of commercially important canopy tree species. The objectives of the study were: (1) to characterize stump and root sprouting behaviors of canopy tree species harvested for timber; (2) to quantify the effect of logging on relative abundances and growth rates of stump sprouts, root sprouts, and true seedlings; (3) to relate the species-specific probabilities of stump sprouting to stump diameter and stump height; and (4) to explore how sprouting varies with the ecological requirements of canopy tree species. The study was carried out 1–5 years after logging of a privately owned land in a Bolivian tropical dry forest. Twenty-seven of the 31 species monitored resprouted at least occasionally, among which Centrolobium microchaete (Leguminosae-Fabaceae) and Zeyheria tuberculosa (Bignoniaceae) were the most frequent stump sprouters, and Acosmium cardenasii (Leguminosae-Fabaceae) and C. microchaete were the most frequent root sprouters. In all species the number of sprouts declined with increasing stump diameter and stump height. The probability of stump resprouting differed among species but did not vary consistently with stump diameter, except in Z. tuberculosa in which it declined. Approximately 45% of juveniles <2 m tall of canopy tree species originated from root or stem sprouts. Light-demanding species tended to regenerate more from seeds and root sprouts than from stumps. Seedling densities were higher in microsites opened by logging, while root and stem sprouts were equally common across microsites. Given their abundance and the fact that root and stem sprouts at least initially grew faster than true seedlings, we conclude that vegetative regeneration in this tropical dry forest is an important mode of post-logging regeneration especially for species that regenerate poorly from seed. Resprout management should be considered as a potentially effective strategy for the procurement of regeneration following logging, especially for species that do not readily recruit from seed. 相似文献

Coppicing was widespread across Europe for many centuries, but during the last 150?years, it has been largely abandoned. Most of the former coppices have been converted to high forest, especially in Central and northwestern Europe. Recently, there has been renewed interest in restoring coppices in some regions, primarily for biomass production and nature conservation. However, there is limited information on the sprouting ability of European tree species, which is the key prerequisite for successful coppice restoration. To address this gap, we evaluated the post-harvest stump sprouting of the three main species of Central European coppices—sessile oak (Quercus petraea (Mattuschka) Liebl.), European hornbeam (Carpinus betulus L.) and small-leaved lime (Tilia cordata Mill.)—in relation to the stump diameter and density of residual trees. Lime and hornbeam resprouted from stumps of all diameters, but sprouting ability declined with increasing stump diameter in sessile oak. Lime produced greater numbers of sprouts with greater diameters and heights than either oak or hornbeam. The number of sprouts per stump increased with stump diameter in all three species as did the height of lime and hornbeam sprouts, whereas there was no such effect on the height of oak sprouts. The sprouting of hornbeam and oak increased and decreased, respectively, with an increasing density of residual trees. In conclusion, our study shows that all of the studied species are able to resprout even at an old age and after a long period of neglect; however, there were important differences among the species. The results also indicate that the age of the parent trees at the time of cutting may significantly affect the tree species composition of a newly restored coppice. 相似文献

Sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus L.) is a tree species with highly valuable wood. Similar to European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.), the stemwood of sycamore can be devalued due to the discolouration i.e. brown heart (hearwood discolouration, hereafter).
This paper aims to establish the influence of tree traits and site characteristics on the formation of heartwood discolouration
and the possibility of predicting the occurrence of heartwood discolouration. For this purpose, 351 sycamore trees from 38
sites in Slovenia, most of them on carbonate bedrock and in the mountain vegetation belt, were analysed. Stem analysis was
carried out on all the trees and the age, diameter at breast height (dbh), height of crown base, forking and crown size, were
established. On the stump and upper fronts of the first and second logs, the maximum heartwood discolouration diameter was
measured. Using logistic regression, the positive influence of age, relative crown length and average diameter increment on
the formation of heartwood discolouration was ascertained. Conversely, the probability of heartwood discolouration was diminished
by diameter increment in the last 20 years. In the less productive sites, the probability of formation of heartwood discolouration
was relatively high in small diameter trees, but it increased slowly with diameter. Tree forking also contributed to a large
extent of the heartwood discolouration. After the diameter at breast height achieves 45 cm, the formation of heartwood discolouration
on the first log is highly probable. As in beech, the heartwood discolouration increases along the stem axis up to a height
of 6–8 m, and decreases in the higher parts of the tree. 相似文献

Sprout contribution to natural regeneration of Rhododendron arboreum following the tree felling for fuel wood and other purposes was studied in two disturbed sites (Paipraw and Falockchar) of
Rhododendron forest in Arunachal Pradesh, northeast India. Cut stumps were categorized into seven girth and height classes to evaluate
the effect of stump girth and height on production of sprouts. Effect of stump girth on survival of sprouts was also investigated.
Results show that highest number of cut stumps is recorded in medium girth classes (50–80, 80–110, and 110–140 cm) in both
Paipraw and Falockchar stands. However, density of cut stumps is higher in Paipraw (1 210 stumps·ha−1) than Falockchar (1 154 stumps·ha−1). Nevertheless, a little higher percentage of sprouting is recorded in Falockchar (18%) than that of Paipraw (15%). Similarly,
maximum number of cut stumps is observed in the medium height classes (50–80, 80–110 and 110–140 cm) in both the sites. Cut
stumps with lower girths show greater ability of sprouting than that of larger girth classes. Significant correlations are
observed between stump girth and sprout number and between stump height and number of sprouts. Survival of sprouts also depends
on stump girth. Survival of sprout shows significant variations between different sampling times in both the sites. Though
overall sprout regeneration of R. arboreum is very poor, sprouts arising from lower girth classes survive well than those of higher girth classes. The findings of this
investigation signify that stump sprouting is not playing much role in the natural regeneration of R. arboreum though it has the ability to sprout. Sprout survival is not adequate to restore a stand where indiscriminate tree felling
is continued and the species may be considered as a poor coppicer. Therefore, regeneration through seeds and seedlings should
be preferred over regeneration through sprouting. 相似文献

The effect of tree harvesting on soil mineral nitrogen and microbiological activity were investigated in an agrisilvicultural system consisting of wheat cultivated along the sides of a poplar plantation in Sweden from 1993 to 1995. Sampling for mineral nitrogen was carried out in three layers down to 90 cm at two distances, near (0.5–1.5 m) and far (4.0–5.0 m) from rows of standing, ST, and harvested trees, HT. Sampling for basic respiration and substrate-induced respiration was carried out in the 0–10 cm layer in 1993 and in the 0–10 cm and 10–20 cm layers in 1994 at the same distances from trees. There was a higher concentration of ammonium and lower concentration of nitrate closer to trees, indicating an efficient uptake of nitrate by trees and enhanced N mineralization close to trees. Shortly after tree harvesting, there were higher concentrations of nitrate and ammonium in the 0–30 cm soil layer near the harvested trees than near standing trees, suggesting a derease in nitrogen uptake by tree roots. The soil microbiological activity was lower in the harvested than the standing plots of trees, which is considered as an indication of the important role of root exudates in maintaining a larger microbial biomass close to trees. 相似文献

The most common canopy trees in the savannas of northern Australia, Eucalyptus tetrodonta and E. miniata are also two of the most common species harvested to make didgeridoos, the traditional musical instrument of northern Australian Aboriginal peoples now experiencing high demand from international markets. Most of the trees of the area naturally have hollow cores, or pipes, due to termite activity, but little is known of the relationships of the cores to size of tree, tree growth or survival. In a wooded savanna of northern Australia, 267 individual trees with known growth and survival rates were cored to determine degree of termite-piping. Generalized linear modelling and multi-model inference showed that frequency of piping increased with diameter (dbh) tree for E. tetrodonta, but >85% of E. miniata trees were piped regardless of dbh. Growth (dbh increment) and survival (4-year) were size-dependent. Survival of both species decreased strongly with degree of piping (pipe ratio). For any given diameter, the growth rate of E. miniata trees was independent of pipe ratio, but for E. tetrodonta trees decreased strongly with pipe ratio. From modelled data, a 10-cm tree with pipe ratio of 0.60 was very vulnerable, growing at 0.0 cm year−1 with 46% survival rate, whereas a 40-cm tree, even with large pipe ratios (0.80), grew 0.05 cm year−1 with 98% survival rate. Traditional methods of tree harvesting remove only those smaller hollow trees that are already suffering low growth rates and are likely to die before reaching maturity, whereas current large-scale commercial methods also remove trees with higher growth and survival rates—those trees most likely to contribute to sustainable tree populations. Incorporating traditional selection and harvest methods into current commercial operations would help ensure longevity of this source of livelihood for indigenous peoples of the region. 相似文献

Abstract On the Laurel Hill, anecdotal accounts reported coppice regeneration of oaks to be limited. Possible causes of poor sprouting success were large stump size, deer browsing, season of cutting and poor tree vigor. Our study site had been partially cut three years before this study to salvage some northern red oak (Quercus rubra L.) which had died. We attempted to increase Q. rubra vigor, as measured by increasing basal area growth, with soil amendments of 6,600 kg/h dolo-mitic lime, 110 kg/h K2O equivalents and 220 kg/h P2O5 equivalents while accounting for other growth variables. The objective was to improve overall Q. rubra sprouting success by increasing vigor prior to harvest. The soil amendments increased soil available calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), potassium (K) and phosphorus (P) and reduced available aluminum (Al). Foliar concentrations of Ca, Mg and K were increased. Basal area increment of treated Q. rubra trees increased by 10 percent and terminal elongation increased by nearly 100 percent. Two years after treatment, the trees were cut during the dormant season and all stumps were protected from deer browsing. After two years, 80 percent of the stumps had sprouted. No effect of lime and fertilizer on the sprouts was found. 相似文献

Abstract The initial density of a stand influences both the prethinning growth and the quality of the harvested trees. This study investigated the effects of different square spacings (2.0, 2.5 and 3.0 m) with thinning from above and thinning from below on stand development and tree characteristics in a 33-year-old Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] plantation in southern Sweden. Before thinning the total standing volume was not significantly different between treatments. Diameter at breast height (dbh) and diameter of the thickest branch were positively correlated. Before thinning, dbh of the trees and their thickest branches were significantly higher in the stands with 3.0 m spacing. After thinning, the dbh and the diameter of the thickest branch did not significantly differ between the 3.0 m spacing with thinning from above and 2.0 and 2.5 m spacing with thinning from below. Spacing did not significantly influence the presence or size of spike knots. The results suggest that a combination of wide spacing with thinning from above may yield timber of similar quality to denser spacing with thinning from below. 相似文献

The effects of partial cutting on species composition, new and residual-tree cohorts, tree size distribution, and tree growth was evaluated on 73 plots in 18 stands throughout southeast Alaska. These partially cut stands were harvested 12–96 years ago, when 16–96% of the former stand basal area was removed.Partial cutting maintained stand structures similar to uncut old-growth stands, and the cutting had no significant effects on tree species composition. The establishment of new-tree cohorts was positively related to the proportion of basal-area cut. The current stand basal area, tree species composition, and stand growth were significantly related to trees left after harvest (p<0.001). Trees that were 20–80 cm dbh at the time of cutting had the greatest tree-diameter and basal-area growth and contributed the most to stand growth. Diameter growth of Sitka spruce and western hemlock was similar, and the proportion of stand basal-area growth between species was consistent for different cutting intensities.Concerns about changing tree species composition, lack of spruce regeneration, and greatly reduced stand growth and vigor with partial cuts were largely unsubstantiated. Silvicultural systems based on partial cutting can provide rapidly growing trees for timber production while maintaining complex stand structures with mixtures of spruce and hemlock trees similar to old-growth stands. 相似文献

The population status of many wild fruit trees that support rural people in Africa remains poorly understood despite its importance for their management. Here, we establish a baseline for size class distribution and gender ratios for marula (Sclerocarya birrea subsp. caffra), a widespread but sparsely distributed species of wooded farmland, that has both traditional importance to rural communities and an emerging commercial potential. A population of marula trees around two neighbouring villages in northern Namibia was surveyed in August 2001. The stem diameter at 1.3 m height (dbh) of all individuals ge1 cm dbh in 40 fields, totalling 286 ha in area, was measured and their gender was recorded as female, male or unknown. Over 400 trees were enumerated, the largest >100 cm dbh. Despite the low threshold (1 cm dbh) for inclusion, relatively few trees (around 40%) were ¡20 cm dbh, suggesting the population may not be self-sustaining. The area was nevertheless well-stocked, with ca 1 tree ha?1 ge20 cm dbh – an unusually high density for Sclerocarya. Tree gender becomes evident when individuals reach about 15 cm dbh. In one village, the sex ratio of larger trees (40–80 cm dbh) was significantly skewed in favour of females. This was attributed to selective elimination of individuals that have failed to fruit and was much less pronounced in the second village. The sparse distribution and gender imbalance of trees have implications in relation to management requirements for ensuring adequate pollen flow. 相似文献

Sustained management of natural forest depends on their ability to regenerate. The pace at which older trees are replaced by younger ones is important in this respect. This study was conducted to assess the demographic details of natural regeneration dynamics of south Indian moist deciduous forests. The status of natural regeneration has been assessed in eight localities of varying levels of disturbance in Thrissur Forest Division of Kerala State of southwest India. Enumeration of trees and their regeneration were analyzed at three levels of organization; whole-stand, stratum, and species. The trees of the forest were grouped into upper, middle and lower vertical strata. Species richness was highest in the middle stratum. Upper stratum species were commercially important. The mean basal area for the Forest Division was 12.83 m2/ha. and average number of trees per hectare (>=20 cm dbh) was 150. Regeneration of the upper stratum species was higher at about 10% gap in the canopy. The growing stock of established seedlings and saplings (height > 100 cm and dbh <=10cm) was very low compared to unestablished seedlings (height <=100 cm). Owing to very low survival probability in the sapling stage (dbh >=1 cm to <=10 cm), a low numbers of poles (dbh >=10 cm to <=20 cm) in the upper stratum was observed. Presence of fire, grazing, browsing and over expoitation by humans are the major constraints of natural regeneration recognized in these forests. 相似文献
