Metal–organic framework (MOF) incorporated mixed–matrix membranes (MMMs) attract great interest for gas separation applications because they overcome limitations faced by typical polymer membranes, including permeability–selectivity trade-off, aging effect, and plasticization phenomenon. However, optimal MOF–polymer interface compatibility is the key challenge in fabricating defect-free high-performance gas-separation MMMs. Here, a surface modification strategy of the UiO-66-NH2 MOF using a covalently bound PIM-PI-oligomer is developed to engineer interface compatibility with the polymer that has an identical chemical structure (PIM-PI-1) in the MMMs. A series of MMMs are prepared with different loadings of homogeneously distributed PIM-PI-functionalized MOFs (PPM). Significant improvements in CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4 selectivity and permeability are achieved with these MMMs, ranging from 5 to 10 wt% of the PPM loadings. The MMM with 10 wt% loading (PPM-10@MMM) shows a CO2 permeability of 3827.3 Barrer and a CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4 selectivity of 24 and 13.4, respectively. This surpasses the 2008 Robeson upper bound for CO2/N2 and is very close to the 2008 upper bound for CO2/CH4. The experimental results are further compared using Maxwell's equation for MMMs. The resulting MMMs show a plasticization resistance against CO2 up to 25 atm pressure and anti-aging performance for 180 h.  相似文献

The increasing need for more efficient separation processes has motivated the development of polymer membranes that can provide fast and selective transport. In this work, cadmium-based metal–organic framework (MOF) nanoparticles and a polyurethane–urea (PUU) elastomer were synthesized. New mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) were then fabricated from the nanoparticles and the PUU. SEM images verified that embedding the nanoparticles changes the morphology of the PUU and the nanoparticles disperse well in the PUU due to satisfactory compatibility of the polymer and nanoparticles. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the dispersion of the nanoparticles in the soft segment of the PUU. With increased temperature, gas permeabilities of the MMMs improved but their sieving ability deteriorated. An MMM incorporating 2.5 wt % of the MOF showed a CO2 permeability of ~140 barrer and a CO2/N2 selectivity of ~30, which are 89 and 38% higher than those of the pristine membrane. Gas permeation tests showed that the higher CO2/N2 selectivity of the MMMs was due to improved solubility selectivity and the higher CO2 permeability was a result of improved CO2 diffusivity and solubility coefficients. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, gas separation properties of Matrimid/MIL-53 mixed matrix membranes with different MOF weight percentages (0–20 wt.%) were investigated. TEM, XRD and DLS analysis were implemented to investigate MIL-53, structure and particles size distribution. SEM, FTIR, DSC and TGA analyses were conducted to characterize the fabricated membranes. The SEM images of these membranes showed good adhesion between polymer and particles, although for 20% MIL-53 loading, particles agglomeration was observed in some areas. Moreover, surface images of the membranes showed adequate dispersion of the particles in the polymer matrix, especially at lower MOF loadings. The permeability of pure CO2 and CH4 gases for all membranes were measured and the ideal CO2/CH4 selectivity was calculated. CH4 permeability of membranes increased slightly as the percentage of loading increased. At 20 wt.% MOF loading, void formation led to a significant increase in CH4 permeability (300% over pure Matrimid). CO2 permeability showed the same trend; there was a 94% increase in permeability compared to pure Matrimid for 15 wt.% MMMs. CO2/CH4 selectivity also increased as MOF loading increased. The highest selectivity was shown for 15 wt.% MOF loading. This membrane had 84% growth in selectivity over pure Matrimid. Although at 20 wt.% MIL-53 loading, membrane separation performance was destroyed.  相似文献

Mixed‐matrix membranes (MMMs) have shown great advantages but still face some challenges, such as the trade‐off between permeability and selectivity, stability, and the lack of efficient ways to enhance them simultaneously. Here, the fabrication of MMMs with metal‐organic frameworks derived porous carbons (MOF‐PCs) as fillers which exhibit selective‐facilitating CO2 transport passage originating from interactions between fillers and CO2 is showed. With the aid of the developed multicalcination method, MOF‐PCs with variable N‐contents were prepared and incorporated into PPO‐PEG matrix for the first time to prepare MMMs, which show excellent separation performance for CO2/CH4 mixture with a tunable separation performance by combining different N‐contents and surface areas of MOF‐PCs. Moreover, the developed MMMs have hydrothermal and chemical stability. This work not only presents a series of MMMs with both good separation properties and stability, it also provides useful information for guiding the fabrication of high performance MMMs for practical application. © 2018 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 64: 3400–3409, 2018  相似文献

Modified ultra-porous ZIF-8 particles were used to prepare novel ZIF-8/Pebax 1657 mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) on PES support for separation of CO2 from CH4 using spin coating method. TEM and SEM were used to characterize modified ZIF-8 particles. SEM was also used to investigate the morphology of synthesized MMMs. The MMMs with thinner selective layer showed higher CO2 permeability and lower CO2/CH4 selectivity in permeation tests compared to MMMs with thicker selective layer. The plasticization was recognized as the main reason for rise in CO2 permeability and drop in CO2/CH4 selectivity of thinner MMMs. The gas sorption results showed that the high permeability of CO2 in MMMs is mainly due to the high solubility of this gas in MMMs, leading to high CO2/CH4 solubility selectivity for MMMs. The fractional free volume and void volume fraction of MMMs increased as the thickness of membrane decreased. Applying higher mixed feed pressures and permeation tests temperatures resulted in increase in CO2 permeability and decrease in CO2/CH4 selectivity. At highest testing temperature (60 °C), the CO2 permeability of synthesized MMMs with thinner selective layer remarkably increased.  相似文献

Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) were prepared by solvent evaporation method using Pebax-1074 polymer as matrix and inorganic zeolite SAPO-23 as dopant. The morphology, surface functional groups, microstructure, thermal stability, and separation performance of MMMs were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, and gas permeation, respectively. The effects of dopant loading amount, permeation temperature, and permeation pressure on the structure and properties of MMMs were investigated. The results showed that the introduction of SAPO zeolite reduced the crystallinity of the MMMs and improved the CO2/N2 selectivity. Under the conditions of 30°C and 0.15 MPa, the MMMs prepared by incorporating with 5% SAPO zeolite in content exhibited the highest CO2/N2 selectivity of 72.0 together with the CO2 permeability of 98.2 Barrer.  相似文献

Membrane technology has emerged as a leading tool worldwide for effective CO2 separation because of its well-known advantages, including high surface area, compact design, ease of maintenance, environmentally friendly nature, and cost-effectiveness. Polymeric and inorganic membranes are generally utilized for the separation of gas mixtures. The mixed-matrix membrane (MMM) utilizes the advantages of both polymeric and inorganic membranes to surpass the trade-off limits. The high permeability and selectivity of MMMs by incorporating different types of fillers exhibit the best performance for CO2 separation from natural gas and other flue gases. The recent progress made in the field of MMMs having different types of fillers is emphasized. Specifically, CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2 separation from various types of MMMs are comprehensively reviewed that are closely relevant to natural gas purification and compositional flue gas treatment  相似文献

Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) based on metal–organic framework (MOF) have great promising application in separation of gas mixtures. However, achieving a good interfacial compatibility between polymer and MOF is not straightforward. In this work, focusing on one of the most challenging olefin/paraffin separations: propylene/propane (C3H6/C3H8), we demonstrate that modification of the MOF filler via dopamine polymerization using a double solvent approach strongly improves interfacial compatibility. The resulting membranes show an outstanding separation performance and long-term stability with propylene permeability nearly 90 Barrer and propylene/propane selectivity close to 75. We anticipate that similar MOF modification strategies may help solve the problem of interface defects in the manufacture of MMMs and be extended to other porous fillers.  相似文献

Poly(l ‐lactic acid) (PLLA) ‐ 20% (w/w) and Cu3(BTC)2 metal organic framework (MOF) based mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) were fabricated by a vertical corotating twin screw microcompounder followed by an injection molding process. Water vapor, CO2, O2, and selected aroma mass transfer properties of PLLA and PLLA MMMs were evaluated. The CO2/O2 perm‐selectivity of PLLA (αCO2/O2) MMMs increased from 7.6 to 10.3 with the incorporation of 20% Cu3(BTC)2 MOF. Gravimetric permeability studies of trans‐2‐hexenal performed at 23°C and 50% RH indicated that permeability coefficient of PLLA MMMs increased by around 60% as compared to regular PLLA film. However, no changes in mass transfer rates were observed for acetaldehyde. Furthermore, the thermal processing parameters as well as the presence of MOF did not show any significant effect on the molecular weight of the PLLA matrix nor on the crystalline structure of the Cu3(BTC)2 MOF, which was confirmed by both gel permeation chromatography and X‐ray diffraction studies. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Membrane composed of PC as base of polymer matrix with different ratio of multiwall carbon nano tubes (MWCNTs) as nanofillers and poly ethylene glycol (PEG) as second polymer was prepared by solution casting method. Both raw-MWCNTs (R-MWCNTs) and functionalized carboxyle-MWCNTs (C-MWCNTs) were used in membrane preparation. The MWCNTs loading ratio and pressure effects on the gas transport properties of membranes were examined in relation to pure He, N2, CH4, and CO2 gases. Results showed that the use of C-MWCNT instead of R-MWCNTs in mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) fabrication with base of PC provides better performance and also it increases (CO2/CH4) and (CO2/N2) selectivities to 27.38 and 25.42 from 25.45 and 19.24, respectively (at 5 wt% of MWCNTs). PEG as the second rubbery polymer was utilized to improve the separation performance and mechanical properties. In blend MMMs, highest (CO2/CH4) selectivity at 2 bar pressure increased to 35.64 for PC/PEG/C-MWCNT blend MMMs which was 27.28 for PC/MWCNTs MMMs at 10 wt%. Increase of feed pressure led to gas permeability and gas pair selectivity improvement in approximately all of membranes. Analysis of mechanical properties showed improvement in tensile modules with the increase of MWCNTs loading ratio and use of PEG in prepared MMMs.  相似文献

The main purpose of research in membrane gas separation is to develop membranes with high permeability and selectivity. Historically, the gas separation performance of polymeric membranes has been constrained to an upper performance limit. Hence, different methods have been investigated to prepare membranes that can exceed this limitation including the incorporation of inorganic materials into polymer matrices. Membranes formed by this method are called mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). The major challenge is to prepare a defect-free polymer/inorganic nanoparticles interfaces with enhanced separation performance and mechanical and thermal stability. For this purpose, various types of nanoparticles have been proposed and examined experimentally. This review is especially devoted to summarize the fundamental concepts that have to be considered to prepare various types of MMMs, including considerations for the design novel MMMs that will eventually surpass the Robeson's trade-off upper bound. In addition, it provides the pros and cons of various factors that affect the MMM preparation especially for CO2 separation processes.  相似文献

Mixed Matrix Membranes (MMMs) of UiO-66-NH2 nanoparticles dispersed in Cellulose Acetate (CA) were prepared with filler loading of 2–20 wt%. MMMs were tested for the upgradation of model biogas (60%–40%) mixture of CH4/CO2 at a feed pressure of 2 bar and 1.5 bar. Detailed characterization of MMMs was performed with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) to investigate the physical and thermal properties. MMMs formed are defects-free, voids-free, and without polymer rigidification, indicating a better filler polymer interface. MMMs showed improved CO2 permeability while retaining the CO2/CH4 selectivity. The 10 wt.% UiO-66-NH2/CA MMM showed optimum gas separation performance with CO2 permeability of 11 Barrer and CO2/CH4 selectivity of 10. The UiO-66-NH2/CA MMMs performed better when compared to the pure CA membrane. The experimental permeability and selectivity data were compared with the predicted data using Maxwell, Lewis–Nielsen, Higuchi, and Bruggeman's model.  相似文献

Facilitated mixed‐matrix membranes (MMMs) containing Cu‐metal organic frameworks (Cu‐MOFs) with high CO2 selectivity on an asymmetric polysulfone support were fabricated and examined the effect of gas separation performance using different matrices. An amorphous poly(2‐ethyl‐2‐oxazoline) (POZ) and semicrystalline poly(amide‐6‐b‐ethylene oxide) (PEBAX®MH 1657) block copolymer were chosen as the polymeric matrix and the effect of the matrix on CO2 separation for MMMs containing Cu‐MOFs was investigated. The interaction of CO2 in different matrix was investigated theoretically using the density functional theory method, and it was found that the amide segment in PEBAX would contribute more to the CO2 solubility than ether segment. The morphological changes were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, field emission scanning electron microscope and X‐ray diffractometer. The ideal selectivity of CO2/N2 was enhanced significantly with the addition of a Cu‐MOF, and the values are higher in the Cu‐MOF/PEBAX MMM compared with that in a POZ based asymmetric MMM. Improvement in the CO2/N2 selectivity of a Cu‐MOF/PEBAX MMM was achieved via facilitated transport by the CO2‐selective Cu‐MOFs due to both their high adsorption selectivity of CO2 over N2 and the decreased crystallinity of PEBAX due to the presence of the Cu‐MOFs, which would provide a synergic effect on the CO2 separation. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs), which combine the characteristics of inorganic nanofillers and organic matrices, have received wide attention because of their good permeability and selective performance for separating CO2 from industrial waste gases. In this work, the amino-GO-loaded bentonite (amino GO-Bent) was prepared by loading  NH2 on the GO surface with a large number of functional sites. Firstly, by introducing  NH2 on the surface of GO and then interacting with bentonite (Bent) organically modified by silane coupling agents through amide bonding. Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) with an area of 623.7 cm2 and homogeneous texture were prepared using amino-GO-Bent as inorganic filler to improve the membrane selectivity for CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4 separation. The results show that the introduction of amino GO-Bent in MMMs can greatly improve the CO2 permeability and obtain high CO2 permeation performance: 2.67945 × 10−7 cm3 (STP)·cm/s/cm2/cmHg, and the selectivity of CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4 can reach 307.28 and 325.97, respectively. The two selective values were 14 and 18 times higher than those of pure PVDF membranes, and the performance of MMMs far exceeded the Robeson upper limit in 2008, respectively.  相似文献

CO2-selective Pebax/NaY mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) were prepared by incorporating NaY zeolite into Pebax matrix. The morphology, chemical groups, thermal stability, and microstructure of the MMMs were investigated by scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray diffraction, respectively. The effects of zeolite loading amount, permeation temperature and pressure on the CO2/N2 separation performance of the resultant membranes were studied. The as-prepared MMMs are much superior to the pristine Pebax membranes in terms of permeability and selectivity. The CO2 permeability and CO2/N2 selectivity can respectively reach to 131.8 Barrer and 130.8 for MMMs made by the starting materials containing 40 wt % NaY. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for CO2-facilitated separation were prepared by incorporating different surface-modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in a fixed carrier membrane material. Polymer containing amino groups, poly(vinylalcohol-co-vinylamine) (VA-co-VAm) was synthesized as polymeric matrix. MWCNTs as well as MWCNTs surface-modified with  OH and  NH2 were applied as nanofillers. The physical property, chemical structure, and membrane morphology were characterized by FT-IR, TG, XRD, DSC, CA, XPS, and SEM. The effects of content, functional group, temperature, and pressure on gas permselectivity were studied. Results show that the incorporation of nanofillers can effectively restrict the polymer chain packing and lead to low crystallinity. The MMMs exhibited higher CO2 permselectivity than the pure polymeric membrane. For all the MMMs, the CO2 permeance and selectivity increased with MWCNTs contents to a maximum and then decreased. MWCNT-NH2 can be regarded as the most effective nanofiller. MMMs with 2.0 wt % MWCNT-NH2 displayed the highest CO2 permeance of 132 GPU and CO2/N2 selectivity of 74. Both CO2 permeance and selectivity were decreased with feed gas pressure and temperature. The membrane exhibited good stability in the testing with the binary gas mixtures of CO2/N2 for 110 h under 0.54 MPa. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2019 , 136, 47848.  相似文献

In theory, the combination of inorganic materials and polymers may provide a synergistic performance for mixed‐matrix membranes (MMMs); however, the filler dispersion into the MMMs is a crucial technical parameter for obtaining compelling MMMs. The effect of the filler distribution on the gas separation performance of the MMMs based on Matrimid®‐PEG 200 and ZIF‐8 nanoparticles is demonstrated. The MMMs were prepared by two different membrane preparation procedures, namely, the traditional method and non‐dried metal‐organic framework (MOF) method. In CO2/CH4 binary mixtures, the MMMs were tested under fixed conditions and characterized by various methods. Finally, regardless of the MMM preparation procedure, the incorporation of 30 wt % ZIF‐8 nanoparticles allowed to increase the CO2 permeability in MMMs. The ZIF‐8 dispersion influenced significantly the separation factor.  相似文献

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are supposed to be ideal additives for mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). In this article one kind of MOFs, Cu3(BTC)2, is synthesized, then directly incorporated into a model polymer (Ultem®1000) using N,N‐dimethylacetamide as solvent. Cu3(BTC)2 particles are uniformly dispersed and there are no interfacial defects in the prepared MMMs when Cu3(BTC)2 loading is not more than 35 wt %, seen in SEM images. Pure gas permeation tests show that gas permeability increases obviously with Cu3(BTC)2 loading increase, while ideal selectivities of CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4 are almost unchanged. For MMM with the best separation property, CO2 permeability increases about 2.6 times and CO2/N2 selectivity remains almost unchanged. Results about gas diffusivity and solubility indicate that gas diffusivity and solubility make contribution to gas permeability increase at the same time but in different ways. Gas permeation properties of MMMs are well predicted by Maxwell or Bruggeman model. © 2014 The Authors Journal of Applied Polymer Science Published by Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Flat mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) comprising polysulfone and clinoptilolite-type natural zeolite were prepared by casting. Zeolite was modified with three alkylamines: ethanolamine (EA), bis(2-hydroxypropyl)amine (BHPA), and polyethylenimine (PEI) by the impregnation method. Impregnated zeolite samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and N2 adsorption–desorption. The alkylamine loading extent determined by thermogravimetric analysis was 5.2, 4.8, and 8.5% for EA, BHPA, and PEI, respectively. Analyses of MMMs showed that the incorporation of impregnated zeolite affected the glass-transition temperature (Tg) and mixed-gas transport properties. In this regard, a decreasing trend of the Tg values from 185.5 °C for the polymeric membrane up to 176.6 °C for Clino-EA-based MMM was recorded. In addition, the gas separation performance was evaluated at two different feed pressures. At 50 psi, MMMs showed an enhancement up to 30% on the CO2 permeability (22.79 Barrer) and 55% on the CO2/CH4 selectivity (45.78) in comparison with the polymeric membrane (CO2 permeability 17.34 Barrer; CO2/CH4 selectivity 29.38). These values varied depending on the alkylamine, BHPA being the most selective. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2020 , 137, 48286.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The combination of polymeric and inorganic fillers inside mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) becomes a hot research topic due to the gas permeability-selectivity trade-off in polymeric membranes. Until recently, the problem of voids hampers the real application of MMMs, hence deep understanding on polymer-particle compatibility is required. This study focuses on the synthesis and characterization of polysulfone and cellulose acetate-based MMMs that combined with ZIF-8 and TiO2 particles. ZIF-8 dispersed more uniform than TiO2. The crystallinity of MMMs was higher than pure polymeric membrane. In addition, micro voids in MMMs resulted a slight decrease in CO2/N2 selectivity (from 15 to 12).  相似文献
