Defect‐free skinned asymmetric gas separation membranes were prepared by a dual bath coagulation method using a wet phase inversion technique. The membranes were cast from polysulfone solution in different solvents such as: dimethyl‐formamid, 1‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone, NN‐dimethyl‐acetamide (DMAC), and tetrahydrofuran. The mixtures of water/iso‐propanol (IPA), water/propanol, water/ethanol (EtOH), and water/methanol (MeOH) with volume ratio of 80/20 were used as the first coagulation bath. This led to the formation of a dense skin top layer. Distillated water was used as the second coagulation bath. The influences of several experimental variables, such as thickness of the membrane, polymer concentration, type of solvent and nonsolvent, immersion time in IPA 20%, and second coagulation bath temperature on skin layer and sublayer were elucidated. For preparing membrane with higher permeance, the influence of internal nonsolvents and addition of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as additive were investigated. The membrane performance was tested in terms of gas permeance and selectivity for O2/N2 separation. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2011  相似文献

Gas separation by metal‐organic framework (MOF) membranes is an emerging research field. Their commercial application potential is, however, still rarely explored due in part to unsatisfied separation characteristics and difficulty in finding suitable applications. Herein, we report “sharp molecular sieving” properties of high quality isoreticular MOF‐1 (IRMOF‐1) membrane for CO2 separation from dry, CO2 enriched CO2/CH4, and CO2/N2 mixtures. The IRMOF‐1 membranes exhibit CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2 separation factors of 328 and 410 with CO2 permeance of 2.55 × 10?7 and 2.06 × 10?7 mol m?2 s?1 Pa?1 at feed pressure of 505 kPa and 298 K, respectively. High grade CO2 is efficiently produced from the industrial or lower grade CO2 feed gas by this MOF membrane separation process. The demonstrated “sharp molecular sieving” properties of the MOF membranes and their potential application in production of value‐added high purity CO2 should bring new research and development interest in this field. © 2016 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 62: 3836–3841, 2016  相似文献

Gas transport through interfacially formed poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) membranes was investigated. The membrane performance for the separation of binary CO2/N2, CO2/CH4 and CO2/H2 mixtures was studied, and the coupling effects between the permeating species were evaluated by comparing the permeance of individual components in the mixture with their pure gas permeance. For the permeation of these binary gas mixtures, the presence of CO2 was shown to influence the permeation of the other components (i.e., N2, H2 and CH4), whereas the permeation of CO2 was not affected by these components. In consideration that water vapor is often encountered in applications involving CO2 separation, the presence of water vapor on the membrane permselectivity was also studied. When hydrated, the membrane was shown to be more permeable to CO2, while the membrane selectivity did not change significantly. Unlike membranes based on size-sieving of penetrant molecules, the present membranes exploit the favorable interactions between the hydrophilic quaternary amines in the membrane and CO2, especially in the presence of water vapor in the feed.  相似文献

In this work, ether oxide (EO)-based multilayer composite membranes were prepared via interfacial polymerization (IP) of trimesoyl chloride (TMC) and polyetheramine (PEA) on polydimethylsiloxane precoated polysulfone support membrane. The effects of preparation parameters, such as monomer concentrations, reaction time, and heat-treatment temperature on the membrane performance were investigated. The optimal preparation parameters have been concluded. The results showed the increasing monomers concentration of both PEA and TMC can lead to the decrease of CO2 permeance and increase of CO2/N2 selectivity. The optimal monomers concentration was found. When monomer concentrations are higher than the optimal values, the CO2 permeance decreases continually while CO2/N2 selectivity only shows a very limited improvement with the further increase of monomers concentration. The reaction time has similar effects on membrane performance as the monomers concentration. The effect of heat-treatment temperature was also studied. With the increasing heat-treatment temperature, the CO2 permeance shows a decrease tendency, while the CO2/N2 selectivity shows a maximum at 80 °C. When PEA is 0.013 mol L−1, TMC is 0.020 mol L−1, reaction time is 3 min, and heat-treatment temperature is 80 °C, the optimum preparation conditions are achieved with CO2 permeance of 378.3 gas permeation unit (GPU) and CO2/N2 selectivity of 51.7 at 0.03 MPa. This work may help to design and fabricate gas separation membranes with desired performance. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2019 , 136, 47755.  相似文献

Models for gas separations with spiral-wound membranes are developed and found to exhibit good agreement with experiments performed on N2/O2 mixtures. The two-dimensional (2D) model can be accurately approximated by a one-dimensional (1D) surrogate model when the spacer widths are chosen to make the channel pressure drops small. Subsequently, the separation of propane/propylene mixtures from the recycle purge stream of a polypropylene reactor is investigated. Assuming ideal gas is found to lead to significant overestimations in membrane stage cuts (sometimes more than 10%), an extent comparable to that associated with extrapolating constant olefin permeance from a low-pressure condition. While olefin permeance can change significantly with pressure, using a constant-permeance formulation can result in a small (< 2.5%) underprediction in stage cut if the value for the permeance is taken from the feed condition. Finally, membrane properties and costs necessary for a viable separation process are discussed.  相似文献

Ultrathin (down to 300 nm), high quality carbon molecular sieve (CMS) membranes were synthesized on mesoporous γ‐alumina support by pyrolysis of defect free polymer films. The effect of membrane thickness on the micropore structure and gas transport properties of CMS membranes was studied with the feed of He/N2 and C3H6/C3H8 mixtures. Gas permeance increases with constant selectivity as the membrane thickness decreases to 520 nm. The 520‐nm CMS membrane exhibits C3H6/C3H8 mixture selectivity of ~31 and C3H6 permeance of ~1.0 × 10?8 mol m?2 s?1 Pa?1. Both C3H8 permeance and He/N2 selectivity increase, but the permeance of He, N2, and C3H6 and the selectivity of C3H6/C3H8 decrease with further decrease in membrane thickness from 520 to 300 nm. These results can be explained by the thickness‐dependent chain mobility of the polymer film which yields thinner final CMS membranes with reduction in pore size and possible closure of C3H6‐accessible micropores. © 2015 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 62: 491–499, 2016  相似文献

Wastewater containing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is generated in various industrial processes and is seriously harmful to the natural environment and human health. Its treatment has become extremely important due to increasing environment concerns. Here, a high permeable membrane for fast and high‐efficient VOCs removal from aqueous solutions by pervaporation is reported. The as‐prepared PIM‐1 membrane allows ultrafast permeation of VOCs and exhibits excellent VOCs selectivity, particularly for ethyl acetate, dimethyl ether, and acetonitrile. Typically, the PIM‐1 membrane exhibits an ultrahigh flux and separation factor of 39.5 kg μm m?2 h?1 and 189, respectively, in the pervaporation of 1.0 mol% aqueous ethyl acetate solution. Furthermore, the solubility‐diffusion mechanism is revealed in the pervaporation of 10 kinds of 1.0 mol% VOCs solutions. It is found that the pervaporation performance is affected directly by physicochemical properties of VOCs. Moreover, effects of feed composition and temperature on the pervaporation are studied in details. © 2015 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 62: 842–851, 2016  相似文献

Complete CO2/CH4 gas separation was aimed in this study. Accordingly, asymmetric neat polysulfone (PSF) and PSF/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) blend membranes were prepared by wet/wet phase inversion technique. The effects of two different variables such as type of external nonsolvent and type of solvent on morphology and gas separation ability of neat PSF membranes were examined. Moreover, the influence of PVP concentration on structure, thermal properties, and gas separation properties of PSF/PVP blend membrane were tested. The SEM results presented the variation in membrane morphology in different membrane preparation conditions. Atomic forced microscopic images displayed that surface roughness parameters increased significantly in higher PVP loading and then gas separation properties of membrane improved. Thermal gravimetric analysis confirms higher thermal stability of membrane in higher PVP loading. Differential scanning calorimetric results prove miscibility and compatibility of PSF and PVP in the blend membrane. The permeation results indicate that, the CO2 permeance through prepared PSF membrane reached the maximum (275 ± 1 GPU) using 1‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone as a solvent and butanol (BuOH) as an external nonsolvent. While, a higher CO2/CH4 selectivity (5.75 ± 0.1) was obtained using N‐N‐dimethyl‐acetamide (DMAc) as a solvent and propanol (PrOH) as an external nonsolvent. The obtained results show that PSF/PVP blend membrane containing 10 wt % of PVP was able to separate CO2 from CH4 completely up to three bar as feed pressure. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. A vinyl amine–vinyl alcohol copolymer (VAm–VOH) was synthesized through free‐radical polymerization, basic hydrolysis in methanol, acidic hydrolysis in water, and an anion‐exchange process. In the copolymer, the primary amino groups on the VAm segment acted as the carrier for CO2‐facilitated transport, and the vinyl alcohol segment was used to reduce the crystallinity and increase the gas permeance. VAm–VOH/polysulfone (PS) composite membranes for CO2 separation were prepared with the VAm–VOH copolymer as a selective layer and PS ultrafiltration membrane as a support. The membrane gas permselectivity was investigated with CO2, N2, and CH4 pure gases and their binary mixtures. The results show that the CO2 transport obeyed the facilitated transport mechanism, whereas N2 and CH4 followed the solution–diffusion mechanism. The increase in the VAm fraction in the copolymer resulted in a carrier content increase, a crystallinity increase, and intermolecular hydrogen‐bond formation. Because of these factors, the CO2 permeance and CO2/N2 selectivity had maxima with the VAm fraction. At an optimum applied pressure of 0.14 MPa and at an optimum VAm fraction of 54.8%, the highest CO2 permeance of 189.4 GPU [1 GPU = 1 × 10?6 cm3(STP) cm?2 s?1 cmHg?1] and a CO2/N2 selectivity of 58.9 were obtained for the CO2/N2 mixture. The heat treatment was used to improve the CO2/N2 selectivity. At an applied pressure of 0.8–0.92 MPa, the membrane heat‐treated under 100°C possessed a CO2 permeance of 82 GPU and a CO2/N2 selectivity of 60.4, whereas the non‐heat‐treated membrane exhibited a CO2 permeance of 111 GPU and a CO2/N2 selectivity of 45. After heat treatment, the CO2/N2 selectivity increased obviously, whereas the CO2 permeance decreased. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci., 2014 , 131, 40043.  相似文献

Microporous poly(ether sulfone) (PES) supported hybrid polymer–inorganic membranes were prepared by the crosslinking of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), maleic acid (MA), and SiO2 via an aqueous sol–gel route and a solution‐casting method. The membrane performance was tested for the pervaporation separation of ethanol–water mixtures from 20 to 60 °C with a feed ethanol concentration of 96 wt %. The membrane characterization results reveal that different SiO2 loadings affected the crystallinity and roughness of the membranes. The PVA–MA–SiO2 membrane containing 10 wt % SiO2 showed that SiO2 nanoparticles were well dispersed within the polymer matrix; this resulted in significant enhancements in both the flux and selectivity. The membrane achieved a high water permeability of 1202 g·μm·m?2 h?1 kPa?1 and a selectivity of 1027 for the separation of a 96 wt % ethanol‐containing aqueous solution. This enhanced membrane performance might have been due to the dense crosslinking membrane network, increased free volume, and uniform distribution of SiO2 nanoparticles. Both the water and ethanol fluxes increased with the feed water concentration and temperature. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2017 , 134 , 44839.  相似文献

Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for CO2-facilitated separation were prepared by incorporating different surface-modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in a fixed carrier membrane material. Polymer containing amino groups, poly(vinylalcohol-co-vinylamine) (VA-co-VAm) was synthesized as polymeric matrix. MWCNTs as well as MWCNTs surface-modified with  OH and  NH2 were applied as nanofillers. The physical property, chemical structure, and membrane morphology were characterized by FT-IR, TG, XRD, DSC, CA, XPS, and SEM. The effects of content, functional group, temperature, and pressure on gas permselectivity were studied. Results show that the incorporation of nanofillers can effectively restrict the polymer chain packing and lead to low crystallinity. The MMMs exhibited higher CO2 permselectivity than the pure polymeric membrane. For all the MMMs, the CO2 permeance and selectivity increased with MWCNTs contents to a maximum and then decreased. MWCNT-NH2 can be regarded as the most effective nanofiller. MMMs with 2.0 wt % MWCNT-NH2 displayed the highest CO2 permeance of 132 GPU and CO2/N2 selectivity of 74. Both CO2 permeance and selectivity were decreased with feed gas pressure and temperature. The membrane exhibited good stability in the testing with the binary gas mixtures of CO2/N2 for 110 h under 0.54 MPa. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2019 , 136, 47848.  相似文献

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is the major air pollutant which is emitted from the power plant. In this study, hollow fiber membrane (HFM) separation process is applied for the improvement of SO2 removal efficiency in the post‐combustion gas. HFM was produced by dry/wet phase inversion method and then coated with Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The membrane morphology and characterization were examined with help of scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersion of X‐ray spectroscopy (EDX), Fourier transform infrared (FT‐IR) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Polyethersulfone (PES) hollow fiber membranes were tested for the SO2/N2 binary mixed gas separation. Single gas permeance of SO2, N2, and binary mixture gas (200 ppm of SO2) separation experiment was initiated to observe membrane behavior according to temperature and pressure difference and retentate flow rate. As a result, permeance of SO2 was 24.9–47.4 GPU and selectivity of SO2/N2 was 1.6–4.2. From the mixture gas separation experiment, SO2 removal efficiency increased according to stage cut and operating pressure. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Ultra‐thin MFI membranes were evaluated for N2/He separation over the temperature range of 85–260 K for the first time. The membranes were rather nitrogen selective at all the conditions investigated. A highest N2/He selectivity of 75.7 with a high N2 flux of 83 kg/m2/h was observed at 124 K. The separation was attributed to adsorption selectivity to N2, effectively hindering the transport of He in the zeolite pores. The exceedingly high permeance even at low temperatures was ascribed to the ultrathin (<1μm) membrane used. As the pressure ratios increased, a better separation performance was obtained. A mathematical model showed the largest difference of adsorbed loading over the film at ca. 120 K was the main reason for the observed maximum selectivity. Further, the modelling indicated the selectivity would increase 2–3 times by reducing the influence of defects, concentration polarization, and pressure drop over the support. © 2016 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 62: 2833–2842, 2016  相似文献

Pervaporation (PV) performances of silicalite‐filled polyether‐block‐amide (PEBA) membranes for separation of ethanol/water mixtures have been studied. The effects of silicalite content, ethanol concentration in feed, and feed temperature on the PV performances of the membranes have been investigated. It is found that addition of silicalite can improve PV performances of PEBA membranes. When the silicalite content is 2.0 wt %, both permeation flux and separation factor reach the maximum values, which are 833 g/m2h and 3.6, respectively. With increasing of ethanol in the feed and feed temperature, both separation factor and total flux increased. The higher permeation activation energy of ethanol (Eethanol = 21.62 kJ/mol) compared to that of water (Ewater = 18.33 kJ/mol) for the 2.0 wt% silicalite‐filled PEBA membrane accounts for the increase of the separation factor with feed temperature.  相似文献

Enhancing the performance of gas separation membranes is one of the major concerns of membrane researchers. Thus, in this study, poly(ether-block-amide) (Pebax)/polyetherimide (PEI) thin-film composite membranes were prepared and their CO2/CH4 gas separation performance was investigated by means of pure and mixed gases permeation tests. To improve the properties of these membranes, halloysite nanotubes (HNT) were added to Pebax layer at different loadings of 0.5, 1, 2, and 5 wt % to form Pebax-HNT/PEI membranes. Scanning electron microscopy, gas sorption, X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared, and differential scanning calorimetry tests were also performed to investigate the impact of HNT on structure and properties of prepared membranes. Results showed that both CO2/CH4 selectivity and CO2 permeance increased by adding HNT to Pebax layer up to 2 wt %. By increasing HNT loading to 5 wt %, the CO2/CH4 selectivity decreased from 32 to 18, while CO2 permeance increased from 3.25 to 4.2 GPU. Pebax/PEI and Pebax-HNT/PEI membranes containing 2 wt % of HNT were tested using CO2/CH4 gas mixtures at different feed CO2 concentrations and feed pressure of 4 bar. The results showed that with increasing CO2 concentration from 20 to 80 vol %, CO2/CH4 selectivity of Pebax/PEI composite membranes increased by 19%, while, in Pebax-HNT/PEI membrane, CO2/CH4 selectivity decreased by 40%. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The miscibility of carboxymethyl chitosan/polyethylenimine (CMCS/PEI) blends was analyzed by FT-IR, TGA and SEM. Defect-free CMCS/PEI blend membranes were prepared with polysulfone (PSf) ultrafiltration membranes as support layer for the separation of CO2/N2 mixtures. The results demonstrate that the CMCS/PEI blend is miscible, due to the hydrogen bonding interaction between the two targeted polymers. For the blended membrane without water, the permeability of CO2 gas is 3.6 × 10−7 cm3 cm−2 s−1 cmHg−1 and the corresponding separation factor for CO2 and N2 gas is about 33 at the pressure of 15.2 cmHg. Meanwhile, the blended membrane with water has the better permselectivity. The blended membrane containing water with PEI content of 30 wt% has the permeance of 6.3 × 10−4 cm3 cm−2 s−1 cmHg−1 for CO2 gas and a separation factor of 325 for CO2/N2 mixtures at the same feed pressure. This indicates that the CO2 separation performance of the CMCS/PEI blend membrane is higher than that of other facilitated transport membranes reported for CO2/N2 mixture separation.  相似文献

Binary and ternary component mixed matrix membranes comprised of zeolite 4A and p-nitroaniline (pNA) in the polycarbonate (PC) matrix were prepared and appraised in gas separation. For comparison, homogenous membranes of PC and PC/pNA membranes were also investigated. The membranes were utilized to separate binary mixtures of CO2/CH4, H2/CH4, and CO2/N2. The effect of feed composition on the separation performance of membranes was investigated. Separation factors and ideal selectivities were similar for the PC membrane. A similar trend was also observed with the PC/pNA membrane. The separation factors of the PC/pNA membrane for CO2/CH4 were almost twice as high as those of the PC membrane regardless of the feed composition. The ideal selectivities were, however, higher than separation factors for PC/zeolite 4A and PC/pNA/zeolite 4A membranes. The PC/ pNA/zeolite 4A membrane has separation factors of 18 for 77% CO2/ 23% CH4 mixture, and 40 for 20% CO2/ 80% CH4 mixture, respectively. The separation factors of the mixed matrix membranes depended on the feed composition strongly. The PC/ pNA/zeolite 4A membrane had higher separation factors and lower permeabilities than the PC/zeolite 4A membrane. pNA assisted to eradicate partly the detrimental effects of interfacial voids and improved the molecular sieving effect of zeolite 4A dispersed in the PC.  相似文献

NR‐graft‐PHEMA latexes were synthesized by the use of graft emulsion polymerization. By increasing the HEMA monomer concentration, we found that the grafting percentage (GP) also increased. In addition, GP increased significantly at low initiator concentrations before it leveled off at moderate concentrations, and a slight decrease was observed at high initiator concentrations. NR‐g‐PHEMA latexes were prepared as pervaporation membranes for the separation of water–acetone mixtures. From the equilibrium swelling, the nonideal behavior of membrane swelling in water–acetone mixtures was found such that there appeared the maximum swelling degree at a certain concentration of liquid mixtures. Moreover, the water concentration at maximum swelling shifted to high water concentration with increasing amount of graft‐PHEMA. The sorption study suggested the preferential sorption of water on the membranes. Also, the sorption isotherms implied that there was a coupling between water and acetone molecules. Pervaporation separation of water–acetone mixtures was studied with NR‐g‐PHEMA membranes. As the feed water concentration increased, the partial water fluxes increased in contrast to the partial fluxes of acetone. From the permeation ratio, θw, the strong coupling of acetone on the water transport was observed, particularly for the membrane with high graft‐PHEMA under acetone‐rich conditions. As the feed temperature increased, the total permeation across the membranes was enhanced. The partial fluxes of water and acetone as a function of temperature followed the Arrhenius relationship by which the activation energies for permeation were estimated as 3.53 kJ/mol for water and 21.95 kJ/mol for acetone. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract

For pervaporation separation of ethanol and ethyl tert-butyl ether mixtures, a cellulose acetate propionate membrane was chosen as the experimental membrane because of its high selectivity and good mass fluxes. The properties of the membranes were evaluated by the pervaporation separation of mixtures of ethyl tert-butyl ether/ethanol and the sorption experiments. The experimental results showed that the selectivity and the permeates depend on the ethanol concentration in the feed and the experimental temperature. With increases of the ethanol weight fraction in the feed and the temperature, the total and partial mass fluxes increased. With respect to the temperature, ethanol mass flux obeys the Arrhenius equation. The selectivity of this membrane decreases as the temperature and the ethanol concentration in the feed increase. This membrane shows special characteristics at the azeotropic composition. In the vicinity of the azeotropic point, minimum values of ethanol concentration in the permeate and in sorption solution are obtained. The swelling ratios increase when temperature and the ethanol concentration in the feed are increasing. The ethanol concentration in the sorption solution is also influenced by the temperature and the mixture's composition. When the temperature increases, the sorption selectivity of the membrane decreases.  相似文献

Understanding the effects of water vapor on gas permeation and separation properties of MFI zeolite membranes, especially at high temperatures, is important to the applications of these zeolite membranes for chemical reactions and separation involving water vapor. The effects of water vapor on H2 and CO2 permeation and separation properties of ZSM‐5 (Si/Al ~ 80) zeolite and aluminum‐free silicalite membranes were studied by comparing permeation properties of H2 and CO2 with the feed of equimolar H2/CO2 binary and H2/CO2/H2O ternary mixtures in 300–550°C. For both membranes, the presence of water vapor lowers H2 and CO2 permeance to the same extent, resulting in negligible effect on the H2/CO2 separation factor. The suppression effect of water vapor on H2 and CO2 permeation is larger for the less hydrophobic ZSM‐5 zeolite membrane than for the hydrophobic silicalite membrane, and, for both membranes, is stronger at lower temperatures and higher water vapor partial pressures. © 2011 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 2012  相似文献
