Effect of hydroxyures and amethopterin on radiosensitivity and thiol levels in biologic objects]

The use of the standard chemical technic for measuring intestinal glucose absorption was compared with a new double-label radioisotope technic. Glucose absorption and water flux in the mouse small intestine were measured by both methods. The results indicated that the 2 approaches yield almost identical values. The radioisotope technic utilized [14C] polyethylene glycol to measure water flux and [3H] glucose. The technic was found to be reliable, rapid, and applicable to small samples and other substrates. It is particularly suited to absorption studies in small animals such as the mouse, where sample size is limited. The study also showed that the polyethylene glycol recovery rate from the mouse intestine was 97.8%, indicating that it is a valid absorption marker in this species.     

Some problems of the moral and psychological training of medical service personnel

The authors' experience with 45 papillosphincterotomies, performed for diseases of bile passages and chronic pancreatitis, is reported. The details of the operative technic, employed by the authors, are described. The technic of papillosphincterotomy on a conus-shape sound by means of a "laser scalpel" proved to be the most perfect one. Careful observation of the surgical technic made it possible to gain favourable results--only 1 of 45 operated patients died. Papillosphincterotomy is largely advocated in stenoses and concretions in the large duodenal papilla, strictures of choledocho-duodenoanastomoses, care should be taken not to overwiden indications to the operation concerned.

Increased attention has been given to cytologic and histopathologic technic in the detection of endometrial lesions because of an increasing incidence of endometrial malignancy. The cervical-vaginal smear as performed by most clinicians is inadequate for the detection of endometrial neoplasia. Existing technics for the detection of endometrial lesions are costly and time consuming. An effective, reliable and economical technic has been developed for rapid smearing and fixation of endometrial cells. The routine endometrial screening of 739 patients (1143 specimens) using the Milan-Markley technic detected 4 cases of endometrial carcinoma, 1 case of carcinoma of the tube, 22 cases of endometrial hyperplasia, and 9 of endometrial polypi. It is hoped that this cytologic method will complement existing histologic detection procedures.     

Evaluation of fecal technics for the diagnosis of cat liver fluke infection

The comparative efficiency of 5 standard technics for the detection of feline liver fluke ova in feces was evaluated. The formalin-ether technic proved superior to direct smear, sugar flotation, zinc sulfate flotation, or detergent sedimentation technics. The formalin-ether technic correctly diagnosed all Platynosomum concinnum-infected cats studied, as confirmed by necropsy findings.

Plasma heparin neutralizing activity. Its use in the evaluation of thrombocytopenia and thrombocytosis

Platelets contain heparin neutralizing activity, which is released into plasma following aggregation. This material is probably identical to platelet factor 4. We describe a technic to measure heparin neutralizing activity in platelet-poor plasma based on the serial heparin dilution technic of Harada and Zucker. Heparin neutralizing activity was depressed in thrombocytopenia due to immune thrombocytopenia and bone marrow depression, and elevated in thrombocytopenia due to disseminated intravascular coagulation. Secondary thrombocytosis is characterized by markedly elevated heparin neutralizing activity, while thrombocytosis associated with myeloproliferative disorders has normal heparin neutralizing activity.

Acute venous hemodialysis using the unipuncture apparatus

Hemodialysis is a well recognized treatment modality for the support of patients with acute renal failure. In such patients, rapid access to the circulation for hemodialysis is important. For those patients with self-limited acute renal failure in whom recovery is expected, a rapid means of gaining temporary access to the circulation would be particularly desirable. The Seldinger technic for femoral vein catheterization and the use of the unipuncture dialysis apparatus have been combined to meet this requirement. The efficiency of unipuncture dialysis through a single femoral catheter compares favorably with the efficiency of dialysis by the standard two catheter technic.     

Studies on metastases of papillary adenocarcinoma of the thyroid in relation to surgical treatment (author''s transl)

A method of determination of calcium in biological fluids is proposed. It is a continuous flow technic without deproteinisation nor dialysis, using orthocresol phtaleine in alkaline medium. The interference due to magnesium is eliminated by the presence of hydroxy-8-quinoleine. The addition of dimethyl sulfoxide improves the solubility of the reagents and ensures better stability of the media. The correlation between the results obtained by this technic and by atomic absorption spectrophotometry was studied on 160 human sera and 40 urines. The influence of various parameters such as hemolysis, bilirubin, magnesium and phosphates is low or negligeable. The results concerning opalescent, cloudy or lactescent sera may be erroneous by excess. The physiological reference values for serum calcium are drawn up from a Paris student population of both sexes.     

Gait study in evaluation of results in intramedullary nailing for femoral shaft fractures

The present preliminary investigation conducted on six adult males whose femur shaft fractures had been fixed internally by means of Hansen-Street intermedullary nails indicated that our gait study technic helps confirm the clinical findings in such cases. Five patients, although their fractures had united and they had resumed their usual activities, were not deemed quite normal as yet and the causes for their gait abnormality were identified in the clinical examination. The gait study technic thus provided fairly accurate quantitative support of the clinical findings.     

Does the choice of mammoplasty pedicle influence the shape of reduced the reduced-sized breast?

Thirty seven patients with breast hypertrophy were restrospectively reviewed with a mean follow-up of 2 years. Reduction mammoplasty was performed with 3 different pedicles (superior, inferior and both) involving a glandular resection of a least 500 g on each side in all cases. The results were evaluated according to both objective and subjective criteria. The choice of pedicle had a considerable influence on the results. The vertical limb usually increased with time (months), although its intraoperative length was 5 cm. The increasing length of the vertical limb varies according to the type of pedicle chosen. The mean length increase was 1.52 cm; 4.18 cm; 4.15 cm for superior, inferior, and both pedicles respectively. The different increase was statistically significant (p < 0.001) when the technic involving a superior pedicle was compared to a technic involving an inferior pedicle. No statistically significant difference was observed between technics using the inferior and both pedicles. A superior pedicle technic entails the lowest increase of the vertical limb length which in turns leads to better long-term cosmetic results.

The dynamics of arterial, venous, and lymphatic flow in the mesentery were studied in dogs, using an electromagnetic flowmeter for the blood and cannulation and gravimetric measurement for the lymph. Ligation of veins caused an increased venous outflow in adjacent veins and a marked increase in lymph flow. When marginal vessels were ligated, eliminating the major collateral flow, venous flow decreased, but elevated lymph flow persisted. Simultaneous ligation of arteries and veins resulted in increases of both arterial and venous flow in adjacent vessels. Lymph flow decreased unless excessive arterial collateral flow persisted. When collateral marginal vessel flow was occluded, adjacent venous and arterial blood flow decreased to control levels. With arterial ligation, collateral arterial blood flow increased slightly, but venous and lymph flow decreased sharply. When collateral marginal vessels were eliminated, adjacent arterial blood flow decreased to control levels and venous flow virtually stopped. As a result of these studies, the technic of early primary arterial ligation followed by marginal vessel ligation appears to be the most satisfactory procedure for decreasing venous and lymphatic outflow and hopefully avoiding dissemination of cancer cells during the operation. This technic is now being used as a modification of the "no touch" technic for cancer of the colon.

Endoscopy of the lacrimal ducts

SUMMARY: The study presents a new technic for the examination of the lacrymal duct; i.e. the endoscopy. It demonstrates the advantages and permits to open up new ways to act on the lacrymal duct. METHODS AND PATIENTS: The seventy two patients examined by means of endoscopy between January 1997 and May 1997 have had all a clear pathology: epiphora, chronic or acute dacryocystite in a remission phase. Some patients were at the same time examined radiogically, by means of a dacryocystorhinography. RESULTS: In all the cases studied using both technics, the endoscopy made it possible to put into evidence the origin of the epiphora or the dacryocystite with a much higher precision than with radiographies. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: The endoscopy of the lacrymal duct is the best examination technic in the lacrymal pathology and should in a near future replace the dacryocystorhinography.
