The development of very high-throughput and autonomous robotic workstations will be necessary to quickly and efficiently complete the sequencing of the 3 billion nucleotide base pairs that make up the human genome. The key to our sequencing scale-up efforts is the development of the Sequencing Support System. The Sequencing Support System is an integrated robotic workstation built around a 3-meter rail robot. The Sequencing Support System is currently assembling cycle sequence reactions and thermal cycling and consolidating reactions. We are currently testing plaque picking and DNA purification methods that can be effectively and quickly integrated with our current platform. Our intent is to quickly develop and construct an autonomous high-throughput system that is replicatable for inclusive large-scale sequencing efforts. This integrated workstation will consist of the Sequencing Support System; a bank of automated sequencers; and a custom 192-channel oligo synthesizer, a vital instrument critical to labor intensive “finishing” efforts (sequencing methods directed at filling gaps and improving the quality of the produced DNA sequence). Each of these components are now operational as separate modules. Data transfer and assembly are automated in software on Mac and Sun computers. Our next system, currently in the planning phase, will be solely dedicated to automated high-throughput “finishing”. A system for electromyographic (EMG) triggering of robot-assisted therapy (dubbed the EMG game) for stroke patients is presented. The onset of a patient's attempt to move is detected by monitoring EMG in selected muscles, whereupon the robot assists her or him to perform point-to-point movements in a horizontal plane. Besides delivering customized robot-assisted therapy, the system can record signals that may be useful to better understand the process of recovery from stroke. Preliminary experiments aimed at testing the proposed system and gaining insight into the potential of EMG-triggered, robot-assisted therapy are reported. 相似文献

A robotic arm system was developed for use by children who had very severe motor disabilities and varying levels of cognitive and language skills. The children used the robot in a three-task sequence routine to dig objects from a tub of dry macaroni. The robotic system was used in the child's school for 12-15 sessions over a period of four weeks. Goal attainment scaling indicated improvement in all children in operational competence of the robot, and varying levels of gain in functional skill development with the robot and in carryover to the classroom from the robot experiments. Teacher interviews revealed gains in classroom participation, expressive language (vocalizations, symbolic communication), and a high degree of interest by the children in the robot tasks. The teachers also recommended that the robot should have more color, contrast and character, as well as generating sounds and/or music for student cues. They also felt that the robotic system accuracy should be increased so that teacher assistance is not necessary to complete the task. 相似文献

The structural design, control system, and integrated biofeedback for a wearable exoskeletal robot for upper extremity stroke rehabilitation are presented. Assisted with clinical evaluation, designers, engineers, and scientists have built a device for robotic assisted upper extremity repetitive therapy (RUPERT). Intense, repetitive physical rehabilitation has been shown to be beneficial overcoming upper extremity deficits, but the therapy is labor intensive and expensive and difficult to evaluate quantitatively and objectively. The RUPERT is developed to provide a low cost, safe and easy-to-use, robotic-device to assist the patient and therapist to achieve more systematic therapy at home or in the clinic. The RUPERT has four actuated degrees-of-freedom driven by compliant and safe pneumatic muscles (PMs) on the shoulder, elbow, and wrist. They are programmed to actuate the device to extend the arm and move the arm in 3-D space. It is very important to note that gravity is not compensated and the daily tasks are practiced in a natural setting. Because the device is wearable and lightweight to increase portability, it can be worn standing or sitting providing therapy tasks that better mimic activities of daily living. The sensors feed back position and force information for quantitative evaluation of task performance. The device can also provide real-time, objective assessment of functional improvement. We have tested the device on stroke survivors performing two critical activities of daily living (ADL): reaching out and self feeding. The future improvement of the device involves increased degrees-of-freedom and interactive control to adapt to a user's physical conditions. 相似文献

Exoskeletons are mechatronic systems worn by a person in such a way that the physical interface permits a direct transfer of mechanical power and exchange of information. Upper limb robotic exoskeletons may be helpful for people with disabilities and/or limb weakness or injury. Tremor is the most common movement disorder in neurological practice. In addition to medication, rehabilitation programs, and deep brain stimulation, biomechanical loading has appeared as a potential tremor suppression alternative. This paper introduces the robotic exoskeleton called WOTAS (wearable orthosis for tremor assessment and suppression) that provides a means of testing and validating nongrounded control strategies for orthotic tremor suppression. This paper describes in detail the general concept for WOTAS, outlining the special features of the design and selection of system components. Two control strategies developed for tremor suppression with exoskeletons are described. These two strategies are based on biomechanical loading and notch filtering the tremor through the application of internal forces. Results from experiments using these two strategies on patients with tremor are summarized. Finally, results from clinical trials are presented, which indicate the feasibility of ambulatory mechanical suppression of tremor. 相似文献

A visualization system for power consumption has been developed. This system has two power measurement devices: a smart power strip that assesses each attached electric device; and a power sensor on the power distribution board. To verify the effectiveness of this system, an evaluation system has also been developed. Driver-assistance systems that monitor driver intent, warn drivers of lane departures, or assist in vehicle guidance are all being actively considered. It is therefore important to take a critical look at key aspects of these systems, one of which is lane-position tracking. It is for these driver-assistance objectives that motivate the development of the novel "video-based lane estimation and tracking" (VioLET) system. The system is designed using steerable filters for robust and accurate lane-marking detection. Steerable filters provide an efficient method for detecting circular-reflector markings, solid-line markings, and segmented-line markings under varying lighting and road conditions. They help in providing robustness to complex shadowing, lighting changes from overpasses and tunnels, and road-surface variations. They are efficient for lane-marking extraction because by computing only three separable convolutions, we can extract a wide variety of lane markings. Curvature detection is made more robust by incorporating both visual cues (lane markings and lane texture) and vehicle-state information. The experiment design and evaluation of the VioLET system is shown using multiple quantitative metrics over a wide variety of test conditions on a large test path using a unique instrumented vehicle. A justification for the choice of metrics based on a previous study with human-factors applications as well as extensive ground-truth testing from different times of day, road conditions, weather, and driving scenarios is also presented. In order to design the VioLET system, an up-to-date and comprehensive analysis of the current state of the art in lane-detection research was first performed. In doing so, a comparison of a wide variety of methods, pointing out the similarities and differences between methods as well as when and where various methods are most useful, is presented. 相似文献

In this work we develop standardized functional forms for electricity technology competitiveness metrics and show how the mathematical relationship between value and cost can affect the robustness of the metric. We make the case to replace established metrics with economic profitability metrics – including a new profitability-based adjustment to LCOE. This study presents a warning information system based on an innovate methodology to estimate accident likelihood in real time. Bayesian modeling approach implemented by the probabilistic neural network (PNN) is conducted to identify hazardous traffic conditions leading to potential accident occurrence. The proposed system displays warning signs to call drivers' attention for safer and careful driving once hazardous traffic conditions are observed by evaluating accident likelihood. The paper introduces hybrid photovoltaic-wind-diesel generation systems supplying a remote power load considering the advantages of sustainable energy from the economic point of view. In particular, a cost investment valuation is performed on a real plant showing the effect of sustainable economical saving. The possibility to introduce a fuel cell generation device in a photovoltaic-wind existing plant for supplying Telecommunication apparatus is also investigated and the results are reported and discussed in the paper.
