The parasites of the red rockfish Sebastes capensis off northern Chile are described quantitatively for the first time and compared with those of congeneric species of the Northern Hemisphere as well as of other Chilean marine fishes. Sixteen species were recorded, including 8 ectoparasites (2 copepods, 2 isopods, 1 turbellarian, and 3 monogeneans) and 8 endoparasites (2 acanthocephalans, 3 digeneans, and 3 nematodes). The ectoparasites Lepeophtheirus chilensis and Caligus cheilodactylus, and the endoparasites Pseudopecoelus sp. and Corynosoma sp. were predominant. Eighty percent of the fishes harbored 3-6 parasite species. Four parasite genera new to the genus Sebastes were found in S. capensis, which also shares several parasite genera with its congeneric species from other geographic areas. However, in contrast to its congeners, S. capensis exhibits a lower helminth species richness, although when all the metazoan fauna is considered the species number and diversity are similar. When compared with other demersal fishes of the Chilean coast, S. capensis shows a high number of species and high parasite abundance. Diphtherostomum sp. and Gnathia sp. are new generic records for the parasite fauna of Chilean coast fishes and the finding of Paramicrocotyle sp., Neobenedenia melleni, and Interniloculus chilensis in this study represents a new geographical record for these parasites.  相似文献

Within the boundaries of the former USSR, the northern part of the conformis group distribution is located. It spreads over the arid regions of the Trans-Cacucasus, Pricaspijckaja lowland, Kazakhstan and Middle Asia. In this area 10 species and subspecies occur. They are mainly parasites of gerbillins. Unlike many other Siphonaptera the conformis fleas, when in the host's home, do not concentrate in the nest but inhabit the passages of burrow and food chambers throughout the year. On this reason the preimaginal development and existence of the adults take place not at the temperature of the habitable nest, which is heated by the host body, but at the temperature of the soil at a depth of burrow. The temperature threshold for preimaginal development of conformis fleas is reported to be 10-12 degrees. Temperature below the threshold is fatal for all immature instars. On the contrary the imago can survive at freezing temperature. The annual cycle of the conformis fleas is characterized by the presence of adults throughout the year. They breed in the warmer season and overwinter in the state of reproductive diapause. In this state the fleas are able to attack the host and to feed but do not deposit eggs. In the north deserts the reproduction begins at the early April and terminates at the early September. Southern, the reproductive period is longer. Furthermore, the complete interruption of the reproduction in the autumn-winter time may be absent as it was observed in X. gerbilli gerbilli and X. hirtipes in the south of the Middle Asia. On the other hand it is noted that in southern deserts the rate of oviposition falls in the most hot time. The number of generation per year in the conformis fleas varies from 2-3 in north deserts to 6-7 in south ones. The flea populations peak in late autumn when the insects cease to bread. The high abundance is maintained until springtime. After the diapause is ceased and the fleas begin breeding their abundance declines. In the late spring and early summer the emergence of adults begins and the populations increase. In a mild of summer the second fall takes place and then the fall is replaced by the autumnal peak. On their main hosts the conformis fleas prevail over all other species of Siphonaptera especially for warmer time when their quota among other fleas does not descend as a rule below 90% but more oftently it approaches to 100%. The fleas of this group and especially species parasitizing Rhombomys opimus are remarkable for the high level of their abundance. In the northern deserts in the periods of the most high abundance (late autumn, winter and early spring) the number of fleas per burrow occupied by family of Rh. opimus exceeds usually 1000 specimens and sometimes it can reach several thousands. In the southern deserts the abundance of the fleas is lower but the period of their active parasitizing is longer. In the species parasitizing Rh. opimus it is shown that in a complex burrow only some part of fleas has the possibility to feed regularly. In the spring and summer the percentage of fleas daily attacking the host varied from 17 to 86% and from 10 to 150 ectoparasites feed daily on one animal depending on the quantity of fleas and of hosts in the burrow. The number of attacking fleas is regulated by behaviour of the hosts, which change the used parts of burrow when the fleas are crowded there.  相似文献

Trypanosoma cruzi and Toxoplasma gondii are protozoan parasites capable of causing infections of the nervous system. In order to determine effects of infection by these organisms on intercellular communication in the brain, dye coupling and connexin abundance and distribution were examined in leptomeningeal cells and astrocytes infected with T. cruzi or T. gondii. For both cell types infected with either type of protozoan parasite, intercellular diffusion of intracellularly injected Lucifer Yellow was dramatically reduced. Immunocytochemistry with antibodies specific for connexin43 (in astrocytes) or both connexin43 and connexin26 (for leptomeningeal cells) demonstrated that punctate gap junctional staining was much reduced in infected cells, although uninfected neighbors could display normal connexin abundance and distribution. Western blot analyses revealed that connexin43 abundance in both cell types infected with either parasite was similar to that in uninfected cells. Phosphorylation state of connexin43 (inferred from electrophoretic mobility of connexin43 isoforms) was not significantly affected by the infection process. Immunocytochemistry of whole brains from animals acutely infected with either parasite also showed a marked reduction in connexin43 expression. We conclude that infection of both types of brain cells with either protozoan parasite results in a loss of intercellular communication and organized gap junction plaques without affecting expression levels or posttranslational processing of gap junction proteins. Presumably, these changes in gap junction distribution result from altered targeting of the junctional protein to the plasma membrane, and/or from changes in assembly of subunits into functional channels.  相似文献

A study was made of the infectivity of Hypoderaeum conoideum miracidia to a range of laboratory-reared specimens of freshwater snail species (Lymnaea peregra, L. corvus, Physella acuta, and Gyraulus chinensis) that coexist with the parasite in the same natural habitat. L. peregra and L. corvus were found to be equally susceptible to the parasite when specimens of each snail species were singly exposed to miracidia. However, when miracidia could choose either lymnaeid species, they showed a high degree of specificity toward L. peregra. The results obtained suggest that H. conoideum miracidia are capable of distinguishing among these lymnaeids in their orientation to the host. This indicates that miracidia might achieve specificity before actually contacting the snail host and suggests that during the host-snail orientation process they respond to signals different from those generated upon snail contact and invasion. The specificity toward L. peregra observed in H. conoideum miracidia seems to indicate adaptation to the snail community in their natural habitat, resulting in enhancement of their transmission.  相似文献

For many parasites with complex life cycles, manipulation of host behaviour is an adaptation to increase the probability of successful transmission. Since manipulation is likely to be costly, other parasites may exploit hosts already manipulated so as to ensure their transmission without investing in manipulation. Such a cheating strategy, called 'hitch-hiking', could be adaptive in a range of situations. We first propose and discuss criteria that should be met by any parasite to be considered a hitch-hiker. Then, to understand the evolution of the hitch-hiking strategy, we use simple mathematical models to analyse the influence of several variables on the potential benefits for a nonmanipulative parasite of actively seeking a ride to the definitive host with a manipulative parasite. The models suggest that the prevalence or abundance of manipulative parasites will be a key determinant of whether hitch-hiking can be an advantageous option for other parasites. Plasmodium inui (Halberstaedter and von Prowazek, 1907), a malarial parasite of Old World monkeys that occurs in isolated pockets throughout the Celebes, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines, has traditionally been considered to be related more closely to Plasmodium malariae of humans (and its primate counterpart Plasmodium brasilianum), than to other primate Plasmodium species. This inference was made in part because of the similarities in the periodicities or duration of the asexual cycle in the blood, the extended sporogonic cycle, and the longer period of time for development of the pre-erythrocytic stages in the liver. Both P. inui and P. malariae have quartan (72 hr) periodicities associated with their asexual cycle, whereas other primate malarias, such as Plasmodium fragile and Plasmodium cynomolgi, are associated with tertian periodicities (48 hr), and Plasmodiumn knowlesi, with a quotidian (24 hr) periodicity. Phylogenetic analyses of portions of orthologous small subunit ribosomal genes reveal that P. inui is actually more closely related to the Plasmodium species of the "vivax-type" lineage than to P. malariae. Ribosomal sequence analysis of many different, geographically isolated, antigenically distinct P. inui isolates reveals that the isolates are nearly identical in sequence and thus members of the same species.  相似文献

Parasitological data were used to test the hypothesis that the wood mouse (Apodemus sylvaticus) population of Fair Isle, Shetland, originated from the British Isles rather than Scandinavia, as is usually argued. This study was based on the assumption that the mice were likely to share most of their parasite fauna with conspecifics from their ancestral home. The ecto- and endo-parasites of wood mice on Fair Isle between 18 June to 10 July 1987 and 17 to 26 August 1991 were identified and compared with those reported from conspecifics in the two putative source areas. All eight species of metazoan parasites that infected A. sylvaticus on Fair Isle were common to mice of the British Isles, whereas just one parasite on Fair Isle, a mite, had been recorded from Scandinavia. This lends support to the hypothesis that the mice originated from Britain rather than Scandinavia.  相似文献

Cryptobia-susceptible Salvelinus fontinalis vaccinated with a live Cryptobia salmositica vaccine were protected against C. salmositica and they were still protected 53 wk after their initial challenge. Parasites were lysed when they were incubated with immune plasma and complement and this confirms that complement-fixing antibody is an important part of the protective mechanism. Immunological memory was demonstrated in both vaccinated-challenged, and infected-recovered S. fontinalis as there were rapid and significant increases in complement-fixing antibody titers after parasite challenge. This indicates that S. fontinalis are capable of an anamnestic response. Most naive Salvelinus namaycush were not susceptible to C. salmositica infection, and their fresh plasma lysed C. salmositica under in vitro conditions. The lytic factor(s) was inactivated by heating the plasma prior to parasite incubation. This indicates that the alternate pathway of complement activation is likely the mechanism of innate resistance in S. namaycush.  相似文献

Parasite-mediated sexual selection is reviewed with special emphasis on the bird literature. Choosy females may benefit from choosing parasite-free mates if such males provide better parental care, do not transmit contagious parasites, or provide resistance genes to offspring. There is evidence in support of each of these mechanisms. The immunocompetence handicap hypothesis posits that secondary sexual characters reliably reveal the ability of males to resist parasites due to the immunosuppressive effects of testosterone and other biochemicals. Several aspects of these negative feedback mechanisms are supported by laboratory studies, but evidence from free-living animals is almost completely absent. Corticosterone rather than testosterone may potentially mediate the immunocompetence handicap mechanism. A simple version of the immunocompetence handicap is developed suggesting that body condition of male hosts is a sufficient mediator of the handicap mechanism of reliable sexual signaling. Sexual selection appears to be more intense in sexually dichromatic bird species, and comparative studies using pairwise comparisons of closely related taxa reveal that sexually dichromatic bird species have larger spleens, larger bursa of Fabricius, and higher concentrations of leukocytes than monochromatic species. Parasite-mediated sexual selection is proposed to affect parasite biology by increasing (1) the variance-to-mean ratio in parasite abundance, (2) variance in the intensity of natural selection affecting hosts, and (3) speciation rates among parasites exploiting hosts subject to intense sexual selection as compared to those subject to less intense selection.  相似文献

Some aspects of the widely observed over-dispersed pattern of the distribution of parasites within the host population are examined. It has been established in the parasitological literature that most hosts usually harbour few parasites, while only few hosts harbour a large proportion of the parasite population. Factors that may influence the pattern of distribution of parasites, the relation between the level of parasite aggregation and the prevalence of infection, and changes in this level of aggregation as a function of host age are analysed. Factors which determine the diversity of species in parasite communities are presented, and aspects of exploitative and interference competition among parasites and their relations with biological control procedures are also considered. Attention is also focused on the regulatory and destabilizing processes influencing the dynamic behaviour of host-parasite population interactions.  相似文献

Surges in the size of adult populations of the flood-water mosquito Aedes albifasciatus can produce important economical losses because of the way this species irritates livestock. Although this species is also the main vector of west equine encephalitis in Argentina, little is known about the factors affecting its population dynamics, as it is difficult to obtain data on its abundance over a large area. However, the results of intensive study of the mosquito in a few sites might reasonably be extrapolated to a regional scale by the use of remotely sensed data. The adult, larval and pupal stages of Ae. albifasciatus were sampled at five field sites to the south of Mar Chiquita Lake, either once a month (during the dry, cold season) or once a fortnight (during the warm, rainy season), between August 1992 and April 1993. The measured abundance of adults or pre-adults and a meteorological coefficient useful for the estimation of larval abundance each showed significant correlation with various statistics derived from normalized-difference, vegetation indices (NDVI) calculated from satellite (NOAA-AVHRR) imagery. A linear discriminant analysis, using data on NDVI, rainfall and temperature, accurately identified periods with and without pre-adults. The satellite imagery was also useful in the estimation of larval abundance and consequently could be used to predict adult abundance 7 days in advance. Even though the satellite data employed have poor spatial resolution, their high temporal resolution makes them very useful in studies of the population dynamics of mosquitoes in general, at least once the relevant variables and their relationships with mosquito breeding and survival have been identified.  相似文献

The parasite fauna in cetaceans from Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and the larger Caribbean region is poorly known. We provide the first records for parasite biodiversity among a diverse assemblage of cetaceans from the Caribbean Sea. Internal and external parasites and commensals were collected from stranded whales and dolphins salvaged in Puerto Rico, the United States and British Virgin Islands, Jamaica, and Venezuela between 1989 and 1997. A total of 47 individuals of 16 species of whales and dolphins (15 odontocetes and 1 mysticete) was examined. Overall, parasites and commensals were found in 34 (72.3%) animals, representing 13 species of odontocetes and 1 mysticete. Eighteen species of endoparasitic helminths were found, including 8 species of nematodes, 2 digeneans, 6 cestodes, and 2 acanthocephalans. Three species of whale-lice and 2 species of barnacles were also collected.  相似文献

This paper represents an attempt to evaluate the environmental indicative potential of the biodiversity of monogenean parasites using hierarchically structured species-abundance data. A logical set of statistical methods integrating standard diversity indices, a novel approach to quantitative analysis of cumulative species-abundance curves and species-abundance models was applied for this purpose. Applicability of biodiversity measures was demonstrated using experimental data from a 1-year study on the ecology of metazoan parasites of chub (Leuciscus cephalus) in one polluted and one control site in the Morava river, Czech Republic. Analyses at the component community level revealed a significant decrease in the number of parasite species with a more equal distribution of their abundances in the polluted site compared with the control site. In order to reach a better understanding of the changes, diversity of Monogenea as a dominant part of the community was further examined within categories of species created according to: (1) specificity of infection (specialists and generalists), (2) monogenean genera (Dactylogyrus, Gyrodactylus and Paradiplozoon) and (3) inhabited guilds (skin + fins, gills). Assemblages of specialists in the polluted site exhibited a significantly reduced species richness and unequal distribution of abundances. The opposite pattern was observed in the case of generalists. The influence of pollution was also reflected by the distribution of species abundances within communities of Dactylogyrus and Paradiplozoon, while no significant shift was identified in the genus Gyrodactylus.  相似文献

Between-year variation of rodent population densities was studied in the central part of trans-Altai Gobi, Mongolia, in summers of a nine year period. Variation in spatial structure of the desert rodent community in 1982-84 and in 1992 was examined by the use of discriminant function analysis. Although population densities, breadth and positions of niches of many species tended to vary independently, the positive conjunct variation was found for the most ecologically distinctive species. This can be explained by limitations of the climate. Although a guild structure of the community was pronounced each year, there were significant between year shifts in niche breadth and niche centres along certain axes of ecological space. Within year nearest neighbours in niche overlap (high seasonal overlap) differed in between year variation in abundance. It is supposed that interspecific competition could contribute to development of community structure.  相似文献

Within snail/trematode associations the age/size of the host at infection has consequences with regard to miracidial infection success, further intramolluscan parasite development and reproduction, and the host response, mainly in terms of growth and reproductive effort. Taking into account these differences, we were interested in determining whether miracidia could discriminate and make a choice between snails of different sizes. Using the Schistosoma mansoni/Biomphalaria glabrata system, we compared data on the snail infection rate and the mother sporocyst abundance among three size classes of snails (juvenile, subadult, and adult) exposed separately or together to the parasite larvae. When exposed individually, juvenile snails (3-5 mm) had significantly higher prevalence and abundance values than did subadult snails, followed by adult snails. In contrast, when snails of the three size classes were exposed together in heterogeneous size groups the prevalence and abundance values were always significantly higher for subadult snails of the 7- to 9-mm class than for juvenile and adult snails. A host choice experiment confirmed that significantly more miracidia were attracted by subadult snails, suggesting that the parasite has been selected for specific locating and recognition mechanisms increasing the infection rate of subadult snails when the latter have been exposed in a heterogeneous size group. Selective forces that may be responsible for such a preferential infectivity of the parasite vis-à-vis particular host age/size class are discussed in relation to host resources and host responses.  相似文献

CBA/Ca mice infected with 5 x 10(4) Plasmodium chabaudi chabaudi AS-parasitized erythrocytes experience acute but self-limiting infections of relatively short duration. Parasitemia peaks ( approximately 40% infected erythrocytes) on day 10 or 11 and is then partially resolved over the ensuing 5 to 6 days, a period referred to as crisis. How humoral and cellular immune mechanisms contribute to parasite killing and/or clearance during crisis is controversial. Humoral immunity might be parasite variant, line, or species specific, while cellular immune responses would be relatively less specific. For P. c. chabaudi AS, parasite clearance is largely species and line specific during this time, which suggests a primary role for antibody activity. Accordingly, acute-phase plasma (APP; taken from P. c. chabaudi AS-infected mice at day 11 or 12 postinfection) was examined for the presence of parasite-specific antibody activity by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Antibody binding to the surface of intact, live parasitized erythrocytes, particularly those containing mature (trophozoite and schizont) parasites, was demonstrated by immunofluorescence in APP and the immunoglobulin G (IgG)-containing fraction thereof. Unfractionated APP (from P. c. chabaudi AS-infected mice), as well as its IgG fraction, specifically mediated the opsonization and internalization of P. c. chabaudi AS-parasitized erythrocytes by macrophages in vitro. APP from another parasite line (P. c. chabaudi CB) did not mediate the same effect against P. c. chabaudi AS-parasitized erythrocytes. These results, which may represent one mechanism of parasite removal during crisis, are discussed in relation to the parasite variant, line, and species specificity of parasite clearance during this time.  相似文献

The contribution of migratory and resident birds to the introduction of Lyme disease will vary with the degree to which various species expose themselves to, and are infested by, juvenile vector ticks, and their ability to support and transmit the infectious agent. To examine the relative contribution of various passerine species during the emergence of this disease, we compared the abundance and infection rates of the blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis Say, removed from mist-netted birds with those from live-trapped mice at a coastal study site in southern Maine, collected during an 8-yr period in which the range of this tick and the incidence of Lyme disease increased in the state. Weekly bird-banding sessions using six 12-m Japanese mist nets were carried out from May through August 1989-1996. In 1989, 1991 and 1993, mice were live-trapped in a Sherman trap grid (7 by 7 m) during five 3-night sessions, June through August; in 1994-1996, 2 such grids were similarly trapped. Annual adult tick abundance was estimated by flagging vegetation. We removed 2,633 juvenile deer ticks from 1,713 of 1,972 birds examined. Twenty-five of 64 bird species were infested. The percentages of birds infested and the rate of infection among removed larvae and nymphs increased over the years, but species varied markedly in their ability to infect ticks. No infected larvae were removed from catbirds or towhees. The larval to nymphal ratio was higher in mice than in birds. Infection rates among bird-derived larvae were less than among mice-derived larvae, but increased with time. Because of the different ways in which individual species of passerine birds contribute to the availability of vector ticks and respond to the agent of Lyme disease in emerging areas, further research into host competency and borreliacidal mechanisms is needed.  相似文献

This study was undertaken to expand the current knowledge of the life cycle and adult morphology of the avian schistosome Austrobilharzia variglandis, which causes a marine cercarial dermatitis in New England. The specific objectives were to: (1) investigate the seasonality of the infection in the molluscan intermediate host, Ilyanassa obsoleta; (2) determine which bird species are acting as natural definitive hosts for the parasite; and (3) characterize the morphology of the parasite using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). One-thousand individuals of I. obsoleta were collected each month for 14 consecutive months and examined for the parasite. Ten to 15 specimens of each of the following avian species, Larus argentatus, Larus delawarensis, Larus marinus, Phalacrocorax auritus, and Branta canadensis, and 2 individuals of Larus atrilla, were collected and examined for schistosomes. Twenty adult male and 10 adult female specimens of A. variglandis were processed for SEM. Ilyanassa obsoleta was found to maintain a relatively low prevalence of infection (0.7-5.1%) throughout the 14-mo study, but no fully developed cercaria were visible in sporocysts recovered from snails collected in winter months. The Larus species had both the highest prevalence (85-92.8%) and highest mean intensity (12.1-34.5 male worms) of infection with A. variglandis. These data suggest that overwintering snail populations can harbor viable infections and in the spring infect shore birds (or humans) with cercaria.
