The maximum acceptable weights of lift (MAWL) of obese and non-obese participants were empirically investigated. Three obesity levels were considered: non-obese (18.5 kg/m(2)< or= body mass index (BMI)or= 40 kg/m(2)). Ten male and 10 female participants were recruited for each obesity level. The participants determined their MAWL for 18 different lifting task conditions (six lifting frequencies x three lifting heights). An analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to determine the effects of obesity level, gender, lifting height, lifting frequency and their interactions on MAWL. Overall, the ANOVA results indicated that obesity does not reduce MAWL, and thus, suggested that the existing MAWL data can be used to accommodate both general and obese workers. However, further studies based on the biomechanical and physiological approaches are required to provide more complete understanding of obesity effects on lifting tolerance limits.  相似文献

Obesity is highly prevalent in the workforce but little is known about its effects on musculoskeletal disorders risk factors, such as the posture adopted during work activity. Vertical Handling Tasks (VHT), including manual lifting and lowering loads, are quite frequent in industrial settings and are considered to be a major cause of Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSD). Therefore, the main objective of this study is to compare and analyse the strategies and postures adopted during VHT between obese and non-obese subjects. A kinematics study with the VICON® system was conducted within a convenience sample of 8 non-obese (4 women and 4 men) and 8 obese (4 women and 4 men) volunteers participants. Different occupational conditions were tested over 8 trials of VHT. When developing VHT, the obese group presents kinematics significant differences (p < 0.05), compared with non-obese, namely: a decrease in the duration of the tasks, an increase in the horizontal distance between the load and the body worker, and an increase of the trunk sagittal flexion. This study demonstrates that obese individuals are exposed to a higher level of WMSD risk, during VHT performance.Relevance to industryThe findings are relevant to ergonomic workstations/job design for obese workers. This study defends that obesity can be a WMSD risk factor during VHT frequently found in industry, pointing to the need of companies to include this factor during ergonomic interventions on workstations and to adopt obesity prevention measures.  相似文献

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death, and it develops from benign colorectal adenomas in over 95% of patients. Early detection of these cancer precursors by screening tests and their removal can potentially eradicate more than 95% of colorectal cancers before they develop. To discover sensitive and specific biomarkers for improvement of pre‐clinical diagnosis of colorectal adenoma and cancer, we analysed in two independent studies (n = 87 and n = 83 patients) serum samples from colorectal cancer (stage III), colorectal adenoma and control patients using SELDI‐TOF‐MS. Extensive statistical analysis was performed to establish homogeneous patient groups based on their clinical data. Two biomarkers that were each able to distinguish control patients from either colorectal adenoma or colorectal cancer patients (p<0.001) were identified as transthyretin (pre‐albumin) and C3a‐desArg by MS/MS and were further validated by antibody‐based assays (radial immunodiffusion, ELISA). A combination of both proteins clearly indicated the presence of colorectal adenoma or carcinoma. Using a cut‐off of <0.225 g/L for transthyretin and >1974 ng/mL for C3a‐desArg, we found a sensitivity and specificity for colorectal adenoma of 96% and 70%, respectively.  相似文献

Differences in fat metabolism are of importance in relation to energy balance. Low fat‐oxidizers (LFO) are thought to be more prone for developing obesity. We studied whether LFO have different fasting adipose tissue (AT) protein profiles than high fat‐oxidizers (HFO). Six LFO and six HFO subjects were selected from an obese group (n = 99, body mass index>30 kg/m2) taking part in a multi‐center study (Nutrient‐Gene interaction in human obesity) based on the postprandial fat oxidation capacity after a high fat load. AT protein profiles were studied by 2‐DE. Differential proteins were clustered with MAPPfinder according to their function. Protein profiles of purified blood cells and adipocytes served to confine the comparison to adipocyte‐specific proteins in AT profiles of LFO and HFO subjects. LFO had increased mitochondrial ROS scavengers possibly related to long‐chain unsaturated fatty acid‐induced increases in mitochondrial ROS‐production. Carbohydrate oxidation seemed to be reduced since expression of several proteins from the glycolysis pathway was lower in LFO. Up‐regulation of the valine catabolism at the level of methylmalonate‐semialdehyde dehydrogenase appeared to be (part of) the compensatory mechanism. In conclusion, the fasting AT protein profile of LFO and HFO differ at the level of ROS scavenging, the glycolysis pathway and valine metabolism.  相似文献

Abstract

A systematic review of the literature regarding one-handed load carrying was conducted to identify research gaps for future load carrying studies. Twenty-six articles that may be relevant to elderly and obese people were included. Only two studies evaluated the effect of age as an independent variable during one-handed carrying. Obesity was not included as an independent variable in any of the articles. In general, the results suggested that one-handed carrying is more physically demanding than other methods of load carrying. In many cases, physiological responses to carrying a load in one hand were similar to carrying twice the load equally distributed between two hands. Some studies recommended a one-handed carrying weight limit of approximately 9–10?kg for men and 6–7?kg for women. However, more research on the effects of age and obesity during one-handed carrying is needed to determine if these results hold for elderly and obese people.

Practitioner Summary: A systematic review of the scientific literature since 1966 regarding one-handed carrying that may pertain to elderly and/or obese people was performed. Few studies were identified that included aging and none included obesity as independent variables. Areas for future research are identified and discussed.  相似文献

The prevalence of obesity and severe obesity continues to increase in the developed world. Apart from obesity's strong association with a variety of health conditions, severely obese individuals (i.e. ≥ 300 lb [136 kg]) sometimes have difficulty with ambulation, and often cannot use regular sized clothes, furniture, and assistive devices such as walkers and wheelchairs. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between linear body measurements (anthropometry) and weight in severely obese people in order to generate equations to predict such measurements from weight alone. Various body size measurements were obtained from three independent data sets (74 severely obese individuals evaluated at the New York Obesity Research Center, 103 severely obese individuals who participated in the National Center for Health Statistics' National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III, and a further 90 severely obese individuals evaluated at the New York Obesity Research Center). Linear regression analyses revealed that for each increase of 10 kg (22.04 lb) above 136 kg (300 lb), body diameter measurements increase by 0.9–1.1 cm. These analyses provide body size-to-weight estimates that may help manufacturers develop products and services that are more appropriate for increasing numbers of severely obese individuals.  相似文献

The workforce includes an increasing number of workers who are obese and/or older, which may lead to higher rates of workplace injuries. We examined the main and interactive effects of obesity and age on strength and functional performance during sustained isometric exertions involving shoulder flexion in two postures. Four groups of eight participants each (non-obese (18.5 < BMI < 25 kg/m2) young (18–25 years), non-obese older (50–65 years), obese (30 < BMI < 40 kg/m2) young, and obese older) completed static endurance tasks in each posture, at fixed target levels of shoulder moment. Shoulder strength was ∼25% higher with obesity and equivalent between age groups. Both obesity and age affected endurance time, with the obese and younger groups both having shorter endurance. Obesity and age did not have an interactive effect on endurance time and the results were inconclusive regarding acute fatigue effects for individuals who are older and obese. Further work is needed under more realistic task conditions, to explore the likely complex effects of these individual differences.  相似文献

Despite the prevalence of obesity, how obesity affects human physical capabilities is not well documented. As an effort toward addressing this, the current study investigated the obesity effect on joint range of motion (RoM) based on data collected from 20 obese and 20 non-obese males. In total, 30 inter-segmental motions occurring at the shoulder, elbow, knee and ankle joints and lumbar and cervical spine areas were examined. The obesity effect was found to be non-uniform across the joint motions. Obesity significantly reduced RoM for nine of the 30 motions: shoulder extensions and adductions, lumbar spine extension and lateral flexions and knee flexions. The largest significant RoM reduction was 38.9% for the left shoulder adduction. The smallest was 11.1% for the right knee flexion. The obesity-associated RoM reductions appear to be mainly due to the mechanical interposition and obstruction of inter-segmental motions caused by excess fat in the obese body.

Statement of Relevance: Currently, obesity is prevalent worldwide and its prevalence is expected to increase continually in the near future. This study empirically characterised the obesity effects on joint RoM to provide better understanding of the physical capabilities of the obese. The study findings will facilitate designing man–artefact systems that accommodate obese individuals.  相似文献

Data mining is a computational method that permits the extraction of patterns from large databases. We applied the data mining approach in data from 1140 children (9-13years), in order to derive dietary habits related to children's obesity status. Rules emerged via data mining approach revealed the detrimental influence of the increased consumption of soft dinks, delicatessen meat, sweets, fried and junk food. For example, frequent (3-5times/week) consumption of all these foods increases the risk for being obese by 75%, whereas in children who have a similar dietary pattern, but eat >2times/week fish and seafood the risk for obesity is reduced by 33%. In conclusion patterns revealed from data mining technique refer to specific groups of children and demonstrate the effect on the risk associated with obesity status when a single dietary habit might be modified. Thus, a more individualized approach when translating public health messages could be achieved.  相似文献

Signaling molecules released by adipose tissue have been implicated in inflammation, adipocyte dysfunction and systemic insulin resistance. In this study, we used 2-D LC-MS/MS and quantitative proteomics approaches to characterize the obese adipose secretory proteins that are responsive to the thiazolidinediones class of PPAR-γ agonizts. We first showed the differential secretion profiling between obese and lean adipose tissue; 87 proteins were detected from the conditioned medium of adipose tissue of Zucker obese rats compared with 31 from lean rats. A total of 57 proteins comprising immune factors, inflammatory molecules, collagens, proteases, and extracellular matrix proteins were detected from obese, but not lean adipose tissue. More importantly, a quantitative proteomics approach using (18) O proteolytic labeling allowed quantification of the difference in the secretion levels of 77 proteins, and thiazolidinediones treatment suppressed the secretion of most of the obese adipose tissue secretome, thus resembling a lean tissue. We have demonstrated an application of identifying the obese adipose secretome and characterizing the regulation of adipose secretion in obesity and insulin resistance. Our data provide the first evidence of changes in adipose secretion in obesity at a global level and show that such changes are correlated with systemic insulin resistance.  相似文献

Despite the prevalence of pre-obesity and obesity, the physical capabilities of pre-obese/obese individuals are not well documented. As an effort to address this, this study investigated the pre-obesity and obesity impacts on joint range of motion (RoM) for twenty-two body joint motions. A publicly available passive RoM dataset was analysed. Three BMI groups (normal-weight, pre-obese, and obese [Class I]) were statistically compared in joint RoM. The pre-obese and obese groups were found to have significantly smaller RoM means than the normal-weight for elbow flexion and supination, hip extension and flexion, knee flexion and ankle plantar flexion. The pre-obese and obese groups exhibited no significant inter-group mean RoM differences except for knee flexion; for knee flexion, the obese group had significantly smaller RoM means than the pre-obese. The findings would be useful for designing work tasks and products/systems for high BMI individuals and developing digital human models representing differently sized individuals.

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a complication associated with diabetes, leading to end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Despite significant progress in understanding DN, the cellular mechanisms leading to the renal damage are incompletely defined. In this study, with the aim to identify urine biomarkers for the early renal alterations in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D), we performed urinary proteomic analysis of 10 normoalbuminuric patients with T2D, 12 patients with type 2 DN (T2DN), and 12 healthy subjects. Proteins were separated by 2-DE and identified with ESI-Q-TOF MS/MS. Comparing the patients proteomic profiles with those of normal subjects, we identified 11 gradually differently changed proteins. The decreased proteins were the prostatic acid phosphatase precursor, the ribonuclease and the kallikrein-3. Eight proteins were progressively increased in both patients groups: transthyretin precursor, Ig κ chain C region, Ig κ chain V-II region Cum, Ig κ-chain V-III region SIE, carbonic anhydrase 1, plasma retinol-binding protein, β-2-microglobulin precursor, β-2-glycoprotein 1. The proteomic analysis allowed us to identify several increased urinary proteins, not only in T2DN but also in T2D patients in which the microalbuminuria was in the normal range. These patterns of urinary proteins might represent a potential tool for a better understanding of diabetic renal damage.  相似文献

The proteomic approach has aroused the interest of veterinary medicine researchers, especially regarding the production of biopharmaceuticals and diagnosis of diseases in farm animals. Water buffaloes have gained prominence in the world economy due to the quality of their milk, meat, and leather, in addition to being an important donor of blood components. This work aimed to identify and characterize the proteins present in the blood plasma of Murrah buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) through 2D electrophoresis, in gel protein digestion followed by mass spectrometry technique and for albumin depletion, in solution protein digestion followed by shotgun analysis. Our results showed the identification of 112 protein spots and 35 individual proteins, respectively. The abundant proteins were represented by albumin, fibrinogen‐α, fibrinogen‐β, fibrinogen‐γ, immunoglobulins in general, α‐1‐antiproteinase, α‐1B‐glycoprotein, α‐2‐HS‐glycoprotein, α‐macroglobulin, apolipoprotein A1, antithrombin‐III, endopin 2B, fetuin‐B, retinol‐binding protein, serotransferrin, transthyretin and vitamin D‐binding protein. Most of these proteins are related to the signaling pathways of the complement system and coagulation cascade. The results allowed a better understanding of the protein composition of these blood components, thus promoting studies on animal health in the search for molecular markers of zoonotic diseases in buffaloes.  相似文献

Atherosclerosis is one of the leading causes of death in the first world countries nowadays. It is a vascular disease that affects medium and large size arteries, involving the formation of plaques within the artery wall. These plaques result from the accumulation of fat, cholesterol, cell debris, smooth muscle cells and other cells and substances, and may cause temporary or definitive lack of blood supply to an organ.This article proposes a model for cholesterol accumulation and plaque growth. The model is basically a mass balance of low density lipoproteins (LDL) in the intima. The inflow, outflow, oxidation, and consumption of LDL is modeled combining partial models and correlations available in the literature.The model was implemented into an open source finite volume code. Assuming steady blood flow, the code was used to predict lesion formation on a three-dimensional model of the carotid artery bifurcation, a location greatly studied for its role in supplying blood to some parts of the brain and for being related to strokes due to formation of atheromas. The simulation was carried out under physiologic conditions for blood pressure and LDL blood concentration.Results for LDL mass accumulation and intimal thickening over time, plaque shape, and location of thicker spots are reported, showing that the proposed model approximates reasonably well the intimal thickening obtained from post-mortem aortic fatty streaks and from B-mode ultrasonography of the carotid artery of healthy subjects reported by other authors.  相似文献

Postural stability is critical for ensuring a safe workplace. Employees with poor stability are more prone to falls and injuries while at work. In this study, postural sway of participants in different obesity categories was evaluated while performing an assembly workstation task. The study included three workstations: those designed for the 5th, 50th and 95th percentile workers based on anthropometric data tables. Force plates were used to study the differences in postural sway in both the medial–lateral and anterior–posterior directions. The results revealed that the obese class 1 and obese class 2 groups’ anterior–posterior sway was significantly larger than that of the normal weight groups while performing assembly work tasks. Also, pace type (self-paced or time-paced) and workstation (5th, 50th and 95th percentile) significantly affected the postural sway. The postural sway was not affected by gender differences. Workstations should be designed to accommodate the increased postural sway of obese workers.  相似文献

Abstract— Previous research has shown that the size of the LDL macromolecules can have an effect on cardiovascular health and that LDL macromolecules may be non‐spherical in shape. Some of these studies, however, used methods that are not conducive to automatic determination of the 3‐D parameters of the particles. In particular, the prior methods used for determination of geometric‐parameter determination were either centrifugal separations or manual determination of parameters from cryogenic transmission electron micrographs. An application of computer‐vision techniques to automatically determine the 3‐D parameters from cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (CTEM) images will be described. Correlation of computer‐generated geometric models to the orthonormal projection CTEM imagery were investigated to determine the applicability of finding the pertinent geometric parameters of the expected discoid shape of the LDL particles. The processing showed that the discoid shape can be verified using small‐angle rotations that are more amenable to the limitations of CTEM imaging.  相似文献

Functional limitations of persons classified into different obesity categories were evaluated while performing a simulated small parts assembly tasks. Joint angles (measured using electro-goniometers) and maximum forward function reach (MFFR) were used to quantify function limitations, and tasks were completed on three workstations designed for the 5th, 50th, and 95th percentile workers based on anthropometric data tables. Results revealed that BMI category did not significantly affect measured joint angles. Results also indicated that joint angles when working at the 95th percentile workstation configuration were significantly larger than those measured at the 5th percentile workstation configuration. Further, obese class 2 and obese class 3 groups MFFRs were significantly shorter than the normal weight group, which was expected. These results imply that workstation design considerations should include obesity levels, and that work should be placed near the worker and should be elevated to reduce pressure on joint angles while working for larger (obese) individuals.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between slip, trip and fall injuries and obesity in a population of workers at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) in Idaho Falls, Idaho. INL is an applied engineering facility dedicated to supporting the US Department of Energy's mission. An analysis was performed on injuries reported to the INL Medical Clinic to determine whether obesity was related to an increase in slip, trip and fall injuries. Records were analysed that spanned a 6-year period (2005–2010), and included 8581 employees (mean age, 47 ± 11 years and body mass index [BMI], 29 ± 5 kg/m2; 34% obesity rate). Of the 189 people who reported slip, trip and fall injuries (mean age, 48 ± 11 years), 51% were obese (P < 0.001 compared with uninjured employees), and their mean BMI was 31 ± 6 kg/m2 (P < 0.001). Obesity in this population was associated with a greater rate of slip, trip and fall injuries.  相似文献

Longitudinal or otherwise correlated categorical variables are typically related to some covariates and exhibit nonignorable correlations of the observed variables. A further complication often consists in missing entries. For analyzing such data, it is proposed to create an extra missing category and to employ latent class analysis which, regarding missing data, can be shown to belong to the family of nonmissing at random models. By treating the complete and the incomplete cases jointly, it becomes possible to estimate the parameters of interest along with additional parameters characterizing the missing mechanism. Data from the Muscatine Coronary Risk Factor Study, where each child was classified obese or not obese at three occasions, serve as an illustrative example. Previous analyses resulted in significant interaction of age and sex for the complete data (N=460), and in a linear increase in the logit of the rate of obesity over time for the incomplete data, with no effect of the covariate sex (N=1014). Reanalyses employing latent class models do not support these findings. The finally accepted two-classes model for the complete data assumes a linear effect of age which is the same for boys and girls. The incomplete data were considered three-categorical (not obese, obese, missing) and resulted in a more complex model only in part supporting the linear age hypothesis.  相似文献
