Two-phase flow co-current vertical downflow reactor with gas entrainment by a liquid jet is investigated in an air–water system. Experiments are carried out in order to clarify the flow behavior of the reactor under various conditions. Gas entrainment flow rates and gas holdup are quantified experimentally and their dependency on the liquid jet flow rates are shown. The experimental program also included determination of liquid phase residence time distribution (RTD) characteristics for different liquid jet flow rates. The result of the analysis of the liquid phase RTD curves justified the tank-in-series model flow for the liquid phase. On the basis of these analyses, the reactor hydrodynamics are modeled by the tank-in-series model including dead zones. Good agreement is obtained between theoretical and experimental results assuming the reactor is operating as perfectly mixed. The volumetric mass transfer coefficient kLaLis determined experimentally by a “gasing out” method. The interfacial area is deduced from the bubble diameter measurements which are determined by visualization experiments.  相似文献

The gas–liquid volumetric mass transfer coefficient was determined by the dynamic oxygen absorption technique using a polarographic dissolved oxygen probe and the gas–liquid interfacial area was measured using dual‐tip conductivity probes in a bubble column slurry reactor at ambient temperature and normal pressure. The solid particles used were ultrafine hollow glass microspheres with a mean diameter of 8.624 µm. The effects of various axial locations (height–diameter ratio = 1–12), superficial gas velocity (uG = 0.011–0.085 m/s) and solid concentration (εS = 0–30 wt.%) on the gas–liquid volumetric mass transfer coefficient kLaL and liquid‐side mass transfer coefficient kL were discussed in detail in the range of operating variables investigated. Empirical correlations by dimensional analysis were obtained and feed‐forward back propagation neural network models were employed to predict the gas–liquid volumetric mass transfer coefficient and liquid‐side mass transfer coefficient for an air–water–hollow glass microspheres system in a commercial‐scale bubble column slurry reactor. © 2012 Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering  相似文献

The present study deals with the pressure effects on mass transfer parameters within a bubble reactor operating at pressures up to . The gas-liquid systems are N2/CO2-aqueous solution of Na2CO3-NaHCO3 and N2/CO2-aqueous solution of NaOH. A sintered powder plate is used as a gas distributor. Three parameters characterizing the mass transfer are identified and investigated with respect to pressure: the gas-liquid interfacial area a, the volumetric liquid side mass transfer coefficient kLa and the volumetric gas side mass transfer coefficient kGa. The gas-liquid absorption with chemical reaction is used and the mass transfer parameters are determined by using the model reaction between CO2 and the aqueous solutions of Na2CO3-NaHCO3 and NaOH. For a given gas mass flow rate, the interfacial area as well as the volumetric liquid mass transfer coefficient decrease with increasing operating pressure. However, for a given pressure, a and kLa increase with increasing gas mass flow rates. The mass transfer coefficient kL is independent of pressure. Furthermore, the pressure increase results in a decrease of kG and kGa for a given gas mass flow rate. The values of the interfacial area, which are obtained from both chemical systems are found to be different. These discrepancies are attributed to the choice of the liquid system in the absorption reaction model.  相似文献

The effects of certain pertinent parameters such as gas and liquid flow rates and nozzle position on the behavior of a down‐flow jet loop reactor (DJR) have been studied. The mean residence times of gas and liquid phases and the gas holdup within the reactor have been measured. In addition, the overall volumetric mass transfer coefficient, and the influence of the gas flow rate and the position of the nozzle inside the draft tube on the latter has been determined. Correlations have been presented for the gas holdup and kLa which take into account the length of the draft tube and the nozzle immersion height. The kLa values obtained at different power per unit volume (P/V) values in the DJR used in the present study compare favorably with data presented for stirred tanks and bubble columns in the literature. The liquid residence time distribution (RTD) within the reactor has been studied by tracer analysis for various operating conditions and nozzle immersion height and the results are indicative of the high mixing intensities that can be obtained in such reactions. © 2001 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

In this work, the gas‐liquid mass transfer in a lab‐scale fibrous bed reactor with liquid recycle was studied. The volumetric gas‐liquid mass transfer coefficient, kLa, is determined over a range of the superficial liquid velocity (0.0042–0.0126 m.s–1), gas velocity (0.006–0.021 m.s–1), surface tension (35–72 mN/m), and viscosity (1–6 mPa.s). Increasing fluid velocities and viscosity, and decreasing interfacial tension, the volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient increased. In contrast to the case of co‐current flow, the effect of gas superficial velocity was found to be more significant than the liquid superficial velocity. This behavior is explained by variation of the coalescing gas fraction and the reduction in bubble size. A correlation for kLa is proposed. The predicted values deviate within ± 15 % from the experimental values, thus, implying that the equation can be used to predict gas‐liquid mass transfer rates in fibrous bed recycle bioreactors.  相似文献

The gas‐liquid mass transfer behavior of syngas components, H2 and CO, has been studied in a three‐phase bubble column reactor at industrial conditions. The influences of the main operating conditions, such as temperature, pressure, superficial gas velocity and solid concentration, have been studied systematically. The volumetric liquid‐side mass transfer coefficient kLa is obtained by measuring the dissolution rate of H2 and CO. The gas holdup and the bubble size distribution in the reactor are measured by an optical fiber technique, the specific gas‐liquid interfacial area aand the liquid‐side mass transfer coefficient kL are calculated based on the experimental measurements. Empirical correlations are proposed to predict kL and a values for H2 and CO in liquid paraffin/solid particles slurry bubble column reactors.  相似文献

The main objective of this work was to propose a new process for household fume incineration treatment: the droplet column. A feature of this upward gas‐liquid reactor which makes it original, is to use high superficial gas velocities (13 m s–1) which allow acid gas scrubbing at low energy costs. Tests were conducted to characterize the hydrodynamics, mass transfer performances, and acid gas scrubbing under various conditions of superficial gas velocity (from 10.0 to 12.0 m s–1) and superficial liquid velocity (from 9.4·10–3 to 18.9·10–3 m s–1). The following parameters characterized the hydrodynamics: pressure drops, liquid hold‐ups, and liquid residence time distribution were identified and investigated with respect to flow conditions. To characterize mass transfer in the droplet column, three parameters were determined: the gas‐liquid interfacial area (a), the liquid‐phase volumetric mass transfer coefficient (kLa) and the gas‐phase volumetric mass transfer coefficient (kGa). Gas absorption with chemical reaction methods were applied to evaluate a and kGa, while a physical absorption method was used to estimate kLa. The influence of the gas and liquid velocities on a, kLa, and kGa were investigated. Furthermore, tests were conducted to examine the utility of the droplet column for the acid gas scrubbing, of gases like hydrogen chloride (HCl) and sulfur dioxide (SO2). This is a process of high efficiency and the amount of pollutants in the cleaned air is always much lower than the regulatory European standards imposed on household waste incinerators.  相似文献

The volumetric gas‐liquid mass transfer coefficient, kLα, for oxygen was studied by using the dynamic method in slurry bubble column reactors with high temperature and high pressure. The effects of temperature, pressure, superficial gas velocity and solids concentration on the mass transfer coefficient are systemically discussed. Experimental results show that the gas‐liquid mass transfer coefficient increases with the increase in pressure, temperature, and superficial gas velocity, and decreases with the increase in solids concentration. Moreover, kLα values in a large bubble column are slightly higher than those in a small one at certain operating conditions. According to the analysis of experimental data, an empirical correlation is obtained to calculate the values of the oxygen volumetric mass transfer coefficient for a water‐quartz sand system in two bubble columns with different diameter at high temperature and high pressure.  相似文献

Bioreactors are of interest for value‐upgrading of stranded or waste industrial gases. Reactor intensification requires development of low cost bioreactors with fast gas–liquid mass transfer rate. Here we assess published reactor technology in comparison with a novel downward bubble flow created by a micro‐jet array. Compared to known technology, the advanced design achieves higher volumetric gas transfer efficiency (kLa per power density) and can operate at higher kLa. We measure the effect of four reactor heights (height‐to‐diameter ratios of 12, 9, 6, and 3) on the gas transfer coefficient kL, total interfacial area a, liquid residence time distribution, energy consumption, and turbulent hydrodynamics. Leading models for predicting kL and a are appraised with experimental data. The results show kL is governed by “entrance effects” due to Higbie penetration dominate at short distances below the micro‐jet array, while turbulence dominates at intermediate distances, and finally terminal rise velocity dominates at large distances. © 2017 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 64: 1399–1411, 2018  相似文献

The contribution of local regions to global mass transfer holds the key to optimization and scale-up of a reactor. Extensive study has been conducted to investigate gas-liquid mass transfer occurring in the internal airlift loop reactor, but mostly restricted to global mass transfer performance. A cold model forced circulation internal airlift loop reactor was employed and divided into six regions in which dissolved oxygen concentration in slurry and mass transfer interfacial area were measured respectively. Different models were utilized to calculate volumetric mass transfer coefficient. Contributions of individual region to global mass transfer performance were calculated and compared. It was found that mass transfer coefficient and mass transfer interfacial area of individual region increases with increasing superficial gas velocity and slurry feed flowrate. The feed affected region has the greatest mass transfer coefficient and volumetric mass transfer coefficient, contributing more than 30% to global mass transfer in most operating condition. Mass transfer interfacial area is close in the gas distributor region, feed affected region and the gas-slurry separator region. In the present work, circulating bubbles are rare and contribute negligibly to the global mass transfer. Global volumetric mass transfer coefficient is close to that of the gas-slurry separator region, ranging from 0.02 to 0.1 1/s. Comparison of kLa is made between this work and literatures, suggesting a great improvement of mass transfer due to external liquid circulation.  相似文献

The objective of this study is to characterize mass transfer in a rectangular air‐lift loop reactor in two‐phase flow. In a previous work, it has been shown that the reactor presents a complex gas flow pattern. Therefore, first, the global mass transfer volumetric coefficient kLa was measured in two‐phase flow, by three methods (two based on the liquid phase mass balance, one based on the gas phase mass balance). Then, second, a localized analysis was implemented in order to obtain more information about the phenomena governing the gas phase flow.  相似文献

The gas–liquid interfacial area and mass transfer coefficient for absorption of oxygen from air into water, aqueous glycerol solutions up to 1.5% (w/w) and fermentation medium containing glucose up to a 3% concentration were determined in a co‐current down flow contacting column (CDCC; 0.05 m i.d. and 0.8 m length). Experimental studies were conducted using various nozzle diameters at different gas and re‐circulation liquid rates. Specific interfacial area (a) is determined from the fractional gas hold‐up (εG) and the average bubble diameter (db). Once the interfacial area is determined, the volumetric mass transfer coefficient (kLa) is then used to evaluate the film mass transfer coefficient in the CDCC. The effects of operating conditions and liquid properties on the specific interfacial area were investigated. The values of interfacial area in air–aqueous glycerol solutions and fermentation media were found to be lower than those in the air–water system. As far as experimental conditions were concerned, the values of interfacial area obtained from this study were found to be considerably higher than those of the literature values of conventional bubble columns. The penetration theory is used to interpret the film mass transfer coefficient and results match the experimental kL data reasonably well. Copyright © 2006 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is used to compare the hydrodynamics and mass transfer of an internal airlift reactor with that of a bubble column reactor, operating with an air/water system in the homogeneous bubble flow regime. The liquid circulation velocities are significantly higher in the airlift configuration than in bubble columns, leading to significantly lower gas holdups. Within the riser of the airlift, the gas and liquid phases are virtually in plug flow, whereas in bubble columns the gas and liquid phases follow parabolic velocity distributions. When compared at the same superficial gas velocity, the volumetric mass transfer coefficient, kLa, for an airlift is significantly lower than that for a bubble column. However, when the results are compared at the same values of gas holdup, the values of kLa are practically identical.  相似文献

Hydrodynamics and effective interfacial area in a 25 mm i.d. packed tube column were studied over a wide range of operating conditions for demister pad packings (DPP). Flow maps have been prepared. Values of effective interfacial area as high as 1880 m?1 in the spray flow regime were obtained. Data on pressure drop and effective interfacial area have been correlated for different flow regimes. Values of liquid side volumetric mass transfer coefficient, kL a , were measured by absorption and desorption of oxygen in different packed tube columns containing Pall rings (standard and low height to dia. ratio), multifilament wire gauge packings (MFWGP) and DPP. kL a was found to vary from 0.017 to 0.34 s?1 for DPP. Values of wall side solid-liquid mass transfer coefficient, kSL, were obtained in a 25 mm i.d. copper tube column packed with MFWGP by the dissolution of copper in acidic dichromate solutions. Values of wall side heat transfer coefficient could be obtained by analogy.  相似文献

A special type of jet loop reactor (JLR), designed for continuous operation and short residence times was investigated with regard to its mass transfer behaviour, described by the volumetric mass transfer coefficient kLa. The jet stream and superficial gas velocities are varied in two JLRs of different sizes, equipped with different nozzles. Fully desalinated water, 0.08 molar NaCI solution and solutions of different concentration of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) are used as the liquid phase. A steady-state physical method is employed to determine kLa: air oxygen is purged from the liquid phase by gaseous nitrogen. The measurements show that the reactor is characterized by high power density and high mass transfer performance. No limit of mass transfer capacity was observed in the chosen ranges of volumetric gas and liquid flow rates, i.e. at a given jet stream velocity, the relationship between kLa and the superficial gas velocity is nearly linear. The investigations show that the mass transfer contributed by the jet stream largely depends on liquid phase composition.  相似文献

The study relates to the mass transfer and the bubble size in a non standard vessel equipped with various dual-impeller combinations. The effects of the rotational speed, gas flow rate, impeller type and diameter are investigated. The volumetric mass transfer coefficient kLa and the bubble size dbs were studied. The liquid side mass transfer coefficient kL and the volumetric interfacial area a were estimated separately. A comparison has been made with some existing correlations.  相似文献

In a Confined Plunging Liquid Jet Contactor (CPLJC) a jet of liquid is introduced into an enclosed cylindrical column (downcomer) that generates fine gas bubbles that are contacted with the bulk liquid flow. The region where the liquid jet impinges the receiving liquid and expands to the wall of the downcomer is called the Mixing Zone (MZ). In the MZ, the energy of the liquid jet is dissipated by the breakup of the entrained gas into fine bubbles, and the intense recirculation of the two-phase mixture. The study presented here was undertaken to quantify the ozone-water mass transfer performance of the MZ through the determination of the volumetric mass transfer coefficient, kLa (s?1), and to produce a model for predicting kLa based on the specific energy dissipation rate. It was found experimentally that kLa in the MZ increased with increasing superficial gas velocity. A maximum experimental kLa value of 0.84 s?1 was achieved which compares well to other contactors used in water treatment. Such a large kLa value combined with the small volume of the reactor, favorable energy requirements and safety features of the system, suggests that the CPLJC provides an attractive alternative to conventional ozone contactors. The relatively large mass transfer rates were found to be a function of the high gas holdup and fine bubble size generated in the MZ, which results in an almost froth-like consistency. A model based on the specific energy dissipation rate of the water jet, E (kg · m?1· s?3), and MZ bubble size was used to predict kLa in the MZ. Using E, the number average bubble size was predicted which was then used to calculate the liquid phase mass transfer coefficient kL. The bubble size was also used with the predicted mixing zone gas holdup to calculate the specific interfacial area, a (m?1), which was then combined with kL to determine a predicted value of kLa. The average deviation between experimental and predicted kLa was 6.2%.  相似文献

Spray towers allow for controlling air pollution in which a liquid is sprayed in small droplets to produce a large interfacial area for mass transfer between a gas and a liquid phase. An experimental study of a spray tower for removing SO2 is described. The experiments were carried out under different operating conditions by varying the gas velocity, liquid flow rate, and SO2 concentration. SO2 removal efficiency, volumetric mass transfer coefficient, and liquid‐film formation as a result of the collision of droplets against the tower wall are investigated. Removal efficiency and volumetric mass transfer coefficient are analyzed as a function of gas velocity, liquid flow rate, and SO2 concentration, while liquid‐film formation is evaluated as a function of tower height. The results indicate high removal efficiency. Correlations to predict the volumetric mass transfer coefficient are also proposed.  相似文献

The gas holdup, ?, and volumetric mass transfer coefficient, kLa, were measured in a 0.051 m diameter glass column with ethanol as the liquid phase and cobalt catalyst as the solid phase in concentrations of 1.0 and 3.8 vol.‐%. The superficial gas velocity U was varied in the range from 0 to 0.11 m/s, spanning both the homogeneous and heterogeneous flow regimes. Experimental results show that increasing catalyst concentration decreases the gas holdup to a significant extent. The volumetric mass transfer coefficient, kLa, closely follows the trend in gas holdup. Above a superficial gas velocity of 0.04 m/s the value of kLa/? was found to be practically independent of slurry concentration and the gas velocity U; the value of this parameter is found to be about 0.45 s–1. Our studies provide a simple method for the estimation of kLa in industrial‐size bubble column slurry reactors.  相似文献

The volumetric gas—liquid mass transfer coefficient (kLa) was measured for low‐ and medium‐consistency pulp suspensions using the cobalt‐catalyzed sulfite oxidation technique. Mass transfer rates were measured in a high‐shear mixer for a range of operating parameters, including the rotor speed (N = 10 to 50 rev/s), gas void fraction (Xg = 0.10 to 0.40) and fibre mass concentration (Cm = 0.0 to 0.10). kLa measurements were compared with the macroscale flow regime in the vessel (characterized using photographic techniques) and correlated with energy dissipation, gas void fraction and suspension mass concentration in the mixer. We found that gas‐liquid mass transfer was significantly reduced in pulp suspensions, even for low suspension concentrations. Part of this reduction was associated with dissolved components leached from the fibres into the liquid phase. This could account for reductions in kLa of up to 30% when compared with distilled water. The fibres further reduced kLa, with the magnitude of the decrease depending on the fibre mass concentration. Correlations were developed for kLa and compared with results available in the literature.  相似文献
