Aquatic macrophytes in saline lakes of the Canadian prairies   总被引:7,自引:4,他引:3
Vascular macrophyte species richness decreases with increasing salinity. Only three species of submerged plants (Potamogeton pectinatus, Ruppia maritima, R. occidentalis) tolerate hypersaline waters (>50 g l-1, total of ionic constituents). Eight emergent species occur in more saline habitats but only five (Scirpus maritimus var. paludosus, Distichlisstricta, Puccinellia nuttalliana, Scirpus americanus, Triglochin maritima) occur commonly over a range of saline lakes into the hypersaline category. Usually, species tolerant of high salinities are found over the entire saline spectrum and even extend into subsaline waters (<3 g l-1) and thrive there. A major increase in the number of species occurs below 5 g l-1. As the water recedes plants such as Salicornia rubra, Suaeda calceoliformes, Hordeum jubatum and Sonchus arvensis invade.Submerged angiosperm distribution is controlled by total ion concentration and substrate texture plays no apparent role. Although angiosperms normally grow in all kinds of substrates, they occupy coarse substrates in Wakaw lake because suitable fine substrates are densely colonized by charophytes. In this lake light limited growth occurs to a depth of 5% of surface light. Light was not limiting in Redberry Lake but angiosperm growth was limited to the upper 8 m (10% or more of surface light). Thermal stratification and depth (pressure) were probably limiting istead. In meromictic Waldsea Lake the depth of the chemocline (6 m, 5% surface light) delimits angiosperm growth.  相似文献

The sedimentary benthos of a series of shallow, eutrophicated lakes, the Norfolk Broads is, in general, low not only in number of species but unexpectedly in number of individuals. In two of the lakes, Hudsons Bay and Hoveton Great Broad, chironomids and oligochaetes dominated the fauna. Hudsons Bay has an extensive stand of water lilies (Nuphar lutea); Hoveton Great Broad does not. There were significant relationships between number of chironomids and of Potamothrix hammoniensis with organic content of the sediments, but these were due not to food availability but to the structure imparted to the otherwise fluid sediment by the organic matter. Sediment stabilised in plastic bowls developed much larger populations of oligochaetes than found in the unrestricted sediment. Protection of the community from fish predation resulted in a further major increase in numbers. Sediment stability and predation rather than food supply were the major determinants of these benthic populations.  相似文献

During a biotypological research of surface waters in the province of Friesland, The Netherlands, the macroinvertebrate fauna was sampled, both from the littoral and bottom substrata. Results of this investigation in different types of water on 60 and 55 stations in 1981 and 1982, respectively, are presented. The species richness in the littoral samples exceeded that of the bottom samples, and the samples per station had relatively few species in common. Even in many cases the most abundant taxon was a different one in both samples of the same spot. With multivariate analysis of the data sets from bottom, littoral and total samples a fairly good resemblance was found between these data sets. It is concluded that the semi-quantitative processing of macroinvertebrate fauna data leads to reliable results. One can use one sample per station, wherein different substrata are combined. Distinct clusters were recognized in more extreme environmental conditions such as brackish and acid waters. With the help of the macroinvertebrate fauna the other types of water could not easily be differentiated.  相似文献

The benthic fauna was examined in a series of four isolated headwater lakes, displaying a pH gradient of 5.4–7.0. A slight reduction in number of taxa present occurred below pH 6, with the fauna below 3 m dominated by the Diptera. Although epibenthic gastropods were rare, in contrast with European studies, Amphipoda, Ephemeroptera and Pisidium were common in the least buffered lake, which experiences spring pH values as low as 4.7. There were little relation between the pH or alkalinity, and the abundance, and biomass of the fauna at depths greater than 3 m. However, biomass of the littoral fauna increased significantly in the lakes with lower pH, as a result of an increase in large littoral species normally susceptible to fish predation.  相似文献

A limnological survey of the Iberian mesosaline and hypersaline lakes allowed study of biogeographical and ecological aspects of their ostracod populations. Eucypris aragonica Brehm & Margalef; Eucypris mareotica (Fischer) and Heterocypris barbara inermis (Gauthier) are the only species found in waters with salinities between 10 and 100. Each species tends to be restricted to one of the three large Iberian Tertiary depressions: E. aragonica in the Ebro River basin; E. mareotica in the Guadalquivir River basin (South Spain) and H. barbara inermis in the tableland of La Mancha (Central Spain). Both E. mareotica and H. barbara inermis are distributed in inland waters of regions around the Mediterranean Sea, while E. aragonica is only known from Spain. Historical factors have been traditionally used to account for the distribution of several crustacean species and recent faunas have been seen as the remnat of those inhabiting Tertiary Depressions around ancient Mediterranean Sea.Ecological factors, mainly ion composition, account for their observed distribution pattern in Spanish lakes. E. mareotica typically inhabits high chloride waters while H. barbara inermis prefers lakes with high sulphate. E. aragonica seems to be restricted to chloride waters with a high sulphate content and very irregular (or aperiodic) hydrological regimes. Presence of parthenogenetic populations and waterfowl exchange between different saline-lake areas in the Iberian Peninsula facilitate ostracod dispersion.  相似文献

The nematode associations in six Ethiopian rift lakes, one man-made lake, and three crater lakes were studied and related to water conductivity, lake depth and sediment particle size. The lakes investigated lie at moderate altitudes (1200–2000 m), are alkaline and vary in their conductivities. The rift lakes Abijata and Shala and the crater lakes Aranguadi, Kilotes and Chitu are soda lakes (K25 > 6000 μS cm−1), while the remaining five lakes and the man-made Lake Koka are within the freshwater range of conductivity (K25 < 6000 μS cm−1). A total of 16 species were identified including six new species. The nematode associations varied between lakes and were restricted to very few species in each lake. Most nematodes were restricted to non-saline lakes. The most dilute L. Zwai had a higher number of nematode species (12) and abundance than other lakes. The saline lakes Shala and Kilotes had nematode assemblages made up of only a single species (Mesodorylaimus macrospiculum). No nematodes were found in the hypersaline crater L. Chitu. Tobrilus africanus appeared more euryhaline than other nematodes occurring at conductivities as high as 15 000 μ S cm−1 (L. Abijata). Five of the most common species (Dorylaimus sp., Monhystera stagnalis, Aphanolaimus tudoranceai, Tobrilus africanus and Actinolaimus perplexus) were associated with medium grained sand. A monthly variation in density of nematodes in L. Zwai is also shown.  相似文献

At two ephemeral saline lakes in Saskatchewan, changes in the physical and chemical features of water and sediments at various basin positions were monitored during a wet-dry cycle in 1978 and 1979. Water salinity fluctuated widely in response to changes in water volume and mass of solute in the water. When basins were dry, the soluble salt content of sediments 0–10 cm deep was higher than sediments 50–60 cm deep and sediments in the lake centre were more saline than at the shoreline. Upon reflooding, there was a large immediate decrease in sediment salinity at the 0–10 cm depth, such that this layer was less saline than sediments 50–60 cm deep. Sediments in the lake centre remained more saline than at the shoreline.Classification of lake salinity is necessary to assess the potential of a lake for emergent production. The large variances in ephemeral lake salinity due to water volume changes indicate that classification should be based upon the water volume-salinity cycle of these lakes rather than the salinity of any single water or sediment sample. Water management efforts to lower salinities, to improve these wetlands for emergent growth, should be aimed at reducing the salinity regime of the littoral zone. Flushing, dilution and drying and reflooding techniques are discussed as methods to decrease salinity.  相似文献

To enable estimation of the total assimilation of benthic populations, we measured the oxygen consumption of macroinvertebrates from the littoral zone of a eutrophic lake. The animals were collected all the year round, and their respiration was measured at field temperatures using a closed-bottle method. Multiple regressions relating the rate of oxygen consumption to temperature and body size were established for 22 taxa, including data derived from the literature for meiofaunal groups.  相似文献

A study of 102 samples from almost all salt water bodies in Spain has allowed the preparation of a comprehensive list of anostracans, cladocerans and copepods living in such extreme environments. Among the 26 species recorded, 9 are halobionts, but 17 can exist in less saline waters. Of the halobionts, several are widely distributed throughout arid areas around the Mediterranean (Arctodiaptomus salinus, Cletocamptus retrogressus, Branchinectella media, Branchinella spinosa, Daphnia mediterranea, Moina salina); Branchinecta orientalis ( = B. cervantesi) only appears in Guadiana watershed and toward the east of Hungary, and the Alona belonging to the A. elegans complex is a Spanish endemic. In the second group are many typically freshwater species which also appear occasionally in saline waters, and colonizers of wetlands in steppes, characteristically adapted to a wide range of salinity; one of the formers, Diaphanosoma cf. mongolianum, deserves closer study. The Spanish halobiontic fauna seems to be very old judging by the existence of some isolated species, e.g. B. orientalis may be a Tertiary relic. Persistence through time could have resulted from the continuous aridity of some Iberian localities during the Pleistocene and the ecological constancy of wetlands maintained by regional groundwater discharges.  相似文献

1. To evaluate the effect of habitat patch heterogeneity on abundance and growth of macroinvertebrates in arctic lakes, macroinvertebrate abundance, individual biomass, and potential food resources were studied in three patch types in two arctic lakes on the Alaskan North Slope near the Toolik Lake Field Station. An experiment was conducted to determine which sediment patch type supported higher growth rates for Chironomus sp., a commonly occurring macroinvertebrate. 2. Potential organic matter (OM) resources were significantly higher in both rock and macrophyte patches than in open‐mud patches. Total macroinvertebrate densities in both lakes were highest in rock patches, intermediate in macrophytes and lowest in open‐mud. The open‐mud patches also had lower species richness compared with other patch types. Additionally, individual biomass for one clam species and two chironomid species was significantly greater in rock patches than in open‐mud. 3. In a laboratory experiment, Chironomus showed two to three times greater mass increase in sediments from macrophyte and rock patches than from open‐mud patches. Rock and macrophyte experimental sediments had at least 1.5 × the percentage OM as open‐mud sediments. 4. Chlorophyll a appeared to be the best predictor for invertebrate abundances across all patch types measured, whereas OM content appeared to be the variable most closely associated with Chironomus growth. 5. Our results combined with previous studies show that the relationships between macroinvertebrate community structure, individual growth, and habitat heterogeneity are complex, reflecting the interaction of multiple resources, and biotic interactions, such as the presence or absence of a selective vertebrate predator (lake trout, Salvelinus namaycush).  相似文献

Chinese and Mongolian saline lakes: a limnological overview   总被引:6,自引:2,他引:6
W. D. Williams 《Hydrobiologia》1991,210(1-2):39-66
More than half of China's lakes are saline (viz. have salinities > 3 g L−1). Most salt lakes are in northwestern China (Tibet, Qinghai, Sinkiang, Inner Mongolia). Most Mongolian salt lakes are in the west of that country. Tectonic movements have been of the greatest importance in lake origins, but aeolian activity and deflation have also played a role. Many salt lakes in Qinghai-Tibet lie at altitudes > 4 000 m.a.s.l.; Aiding Hu (Sinkiang) lies at −154 m.a.s.l. Again, many lakes are large in area and deep. Small, shallow lakes are also common. Dimictic thermal patterns prevail in deep lakes, polymictic patterns in shallow ones. The highest salinity recorded is 555 g L−1. The salinity of Qinghai Lake, the largest Chinese salt lake, is 14 g L−1, but mean lake salinity on the northern Tibetan plateau is about an order of magnitude greater. Lop Nor has a salinity of ∼ 5 g L−1. Dominant ions are Na and Cl; Mg, Ca, SO4 and HCO3 + CO3 are important in certain lakes. Most major ions originate by weathering and leaching from rocks. pH values are generally high (often > 9.0). There are no bird or fish species confined to salt lakes, though many are associated with lakes of low or moderate salinity. Artemia occurs widely inland and in coastal salt pans, but is the only major macroinvertebrate of highly saline lakes. In lakes of only low to moderate salinity, invertebrate communities comprise widespread halotolerant freshwater forms and halophiles, some regionally endemic. Submerged and emergent macrophytes occur in lakes of low salinity, but phytoplankton species are more halotolerant. Ctenocladus circinatus, a green alga, is known from a Tibetan salt lake with a salinity of 200 g L−1. There is a dearth of basic limnological information on Chinese and Mongolian salt lakes. More work in particular is needed on a variety of geographically widespread lakes to (a) document seasonal physico-chemical events, and (b) compile comprehensive biological inventories of taxa present. Chinese salt lakes are significant sites for palaeoclimatic research, for conservation purposes, and for the resolution of several important biological questions (especially of an ecological and biogeographical sort). They also have important economic values. Unfortunately, the natural existence of many appears to be threatened by decreased inflows, largely the result of human impact on catchments.  相似文献

The distributions of trace elements in Shield, Ace and Burton Lakes of the Vestfold Hills were investigated. Three aspects are discussed as follows: (1) the vertical distribution of 18 trace elements in the three lakes, (2) the behaviour of trace elements in the lakes, especially that of manganese in Shield Lake, and (3) the origin of trace elements in antarctic saline lakes.High concentrations of trace elements were found in these coastal saline lakes, when compared to open ocean water. We suggest that the peak of total extractable manganese, found at 20 m in Shield Lake, was related to the oxic/anoxic water interface brought about by microbiological activity. Solid phase manganese at the upper oxic layer may have precipitated and then reached the anoxic boundary to be there reduced to manganese ion. This dissolved manganese may then have diffused upwards to be reoxidized to a solid form. This cycle, repeated many times, may have produced the Mn profile. The alkali, alkaline earth elements and Cl were probably derived from relict seawater. Other elements were present in similar concentration ratios to those of South Polar aerosols. Residence time calculations indicate that fallout of aerosol particles, themselves derived from various sources, is capable of accounting for the measured concentrations of some trace elements in Shield Lake. This source of trace elements may be significant for other antarctic saline lakes.  相似文献

1. We studied the spatial organisation of littoral, benthic invertebrate communities in two large oligotrophic lakes with very extensive heterogeneous littoral zones, and report that littoral communities show significant variation in their structure at multiple spatial scales. 2. At coarser scales, littoral zone topography, riparian inputs and exposure may be important drivers of community spatial structure. At finer scales, the composition of substrates, particularly macrophytes and inorganic sediments, may be drivers of community spatial structure. 3. The effects of substrates on community spatial patterns were non‐additive across scales; community‐habitat correspondence became very noisy when we attempted to extrapolate results throughout the littoral. We present some evidence to suggest that this non‐additivity is because of the interaction among structuring processes that operate at different scales.  相似文献

Chinese saline lakes   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
China has many saline lakes. Most occur in the west and north-east. Four main regions can be distinguished: Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, North western, North-central and Eastern. All types of chemical composition occur, but some regionalization of types is found. The Palaeolimnology of many saline lakes in China has been investigated, and a variety of dating techniques indicate ages between the Quaternary and the Recent. Organisms studied include Artemia, Dunaliella salina and some halophilic bacteria. The important role of organisms in many processes of geochemical and geological interest is stressed. Geoecology, as a combination of geology, mineral deposition and ecology, is a subject worth greater attention.  相似文献

Saline lakes of the Paroo, inland New South Wales,Australia   总被引:11,自引:11,他引:0
B. V. Timms 《Hydrobiologia》1993,267(1-3):269-289
Twenty-five lakes from fresh to crystallizing brine in the semi-desert of northwestern New South Wales, Australia, were studied regularly for 27 months. The lakes are small, shallow and ephemeral. Chemically waters are mainly of the NaCl type. Seventy-four species of invertebrate occur in saline waters (>3 g l–1) with crustaceans such as Parartemia minuta, Apocyclops dengizicus, Daphniopsis queenslandensis, Diacypris spp. and Reticypris spp. dominant, particularly at higher salinities. The insects Tanytarsus barbitarsis and Berosus munitipennis are also important in meso- and hypersaline lakes. They are joined in hypo- and mesosaline waters by many others, including more beetles, odonatans, trichopterans, pyralids, notonectids, and corixids. Species richness declines with increasing salinity. There is a prominent inland faunal component mainly of crustaceans, including P. minuta, D. queenslandensis, R. walbu, Trigonocypris globulosa and Moina baylyi.  相似文献

1. Brown and rainbow trout have been introduced to many inland waters in New Zealand, but research on the impacts on native communities has focused mainly on streams. The purpose of this study was to compare the benthic communities of trout and troutless lakes. Based on previous studies in North America and Europe, we predicted that the benthic biomass, and especially the abundance of large invertebrates, would be lower in lakes with trout as compared to those without. We surveyed the invertebrate fauna of 43 shallow, high‐elevation lakes (26 with and 17 without trout) in four geographic clusters on the central South Island and then conducted a detailed quantitative study of invertebrate biomass and community structure in 12 of these lakes. 2. Benthic community composition and diversity of lakes with and without trout were nearly identical and biomass was as high or higher in the lakes with as without trout. There was no evidence that trout have caused local extinctions of benthic invertebrates. Although the proportional abundance of large‐bodied aquatic was slightly lower in lakes with than without trout, the abundance of several groups of large‐bodied benthic taxa (dragonflies, caddisflies and water bugs) did not differ. 3. Our findings are in contrast to those in North American and Europe where trout introductions into previously troutless lakes have led to declines in the abundance of benthic invertebrates, especially large‐bodied taxa. We propose that the modest effects of trout in New Zealand could be explained by (i) the high areal extent of submergent vegetation that acts as a benthic refuge, (ii) low intensity of trout predation on benthic communities and/or (iii) characteristics of the benthic invertebrates that make them relatively invulnerable to fish predation. 4. Regardless of the relative importance of these hypotheses, our results emphasise that the same invertebrates occurred in all of the lakes, regardless of size, elevation and presence of trout, suggesting habitat generalists dominate the benthic fauna in shallow New Zealand lakes.  相似文献

The littoral cladocerans of aPhragmites australis vegetation, and incidentally, the benthic chydorids on a sandy flat were studied from March through September in Lake Maarsseveen I (The Netherlands). A total of 31 species was found. Comparing the species list with data of Lake Constance before and after eutrophication, it can be concluded that Lake Maarsseveen I is still in an oligo-mesotrophic state. The littoral cladocerans peaked in the beginning of June and on the end of July. The species involved differed between the leeward SW and the windward NE sides. A larger number of chydorid species were found on the leeward shore. In the reed vegetation, the benthic chydorid densities showed a high degree of heterogeneity. A range of 23,000–406,000 specimens per m2 was observed. The pattern sampler described by WHITESIDE and WILLIAMS (1975) gave no reliable results for the truly benthic chydorids. They will not swim up into the tubed bottles of this apparatus.  相似文献

Biological and ecological features of saline lakes in northern Tibet,China   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
In May and July 2001, the biological and ecological features of 22 salt lakes in northern Tibet , China, were investigated.Their salinity ranged from 1 to 390 g l–1. One hundred and thirty two samples were collected. Ninty five taxa of phytoplankton and 42 taxa of zooplankton were recorded. The dominant cation was sodium, with magnesium generally sub-dominant; CO32– was the dominant anion in low salinity, chloride was the dominant anion with increasing salinity. Major species were Gloeothece linearis, Oscillatoria tenuis, Chroococcus minutus (blue-green algae); Navicula spp, Cymbella pusilla, Diatoma elongatum(diatoms); Dunaliella salina, Chlorella vulgarisand Ulothrix tenerrima (green algae). Major zooplankton included: Vorticella campanula, Epistylis daphniae (Protista); Keratella quadrata, Brachionus plicatilis (Rotifera); Artemiaspp. (Anostraca); Daphniopsis tibetana (Cladocera); Cletocamptus dertersiand Cyclops vicinus (Copepoda). Ten species were recorded in hypersaline waters; apart from those metioned above, they included CyclidiumsppLitonotus fasciola, Euplotes terricola, Strombilidium viride, Brachionus variabilis, Colurella adriatica, Keratella cochlearis, Colurella adriatica, and Cyclops sp. Seven taxa of benthic macroinvertebrates are recorded, represented by Cyprissp. (Ostracoda), Gammarus sp. (Amphipoda), Radixsp. and Hippeutis sp. (Mollusca); chiroonomids Tendipus group salinarius (Diptera), Nematoda, Trochophora and Ephrdra sp. At present, there are fishes only in Bangong Co., and no fishes recorded in other salt lakes. The total number of plankton species has a significantly negative correlation with the salinity, and decreased with increasing altitude, but not significant.  相似文献

1. Littoral biota in boreal lakes are known to assimilate epilithon. Being able to predict the stable isotopic composition of these alga will help to identify those systems in which δ13C and δ15N analysis can be used in foodweb investigations of allochthony and biomagnification.
2. In a survey of 15 boreal lakes, the concentration of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) explained 76% of the variation in epilithon δ13C, and 86% of the variation in epilithon δ15N.
3. Because both δ13C and δ15N values were depressed and similar to terrestrial values in humic (high DOC) lakes, it will be more difficult to successfully employ stable isotopic techniques for estimating allochthony in such systems. Lower δ15N values in humic lakes also indicate that trophic positions estimated by stable isotopes are not directly comparable to those of similar biota inhabiting clearwater lakes, unless autochthonous baseline corrections are made.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments and field data were used to determine salinity tolerance limits of three ostracode species (Prionocypris aragonica, Eucypris mareotica and Heterocypris barbara) from Iberian saline lakes. Salinity tolerance appeared related to ionic composition and temperature. Implications for ostracode ecology and geographical distribution are evaluated.  相似文献
