We investigated the effect of different densities of the burrowing deposit-feeding amphipod Monoporeia affinis on the potential for recruitment of zooplankton from benthic resting eggs. Hatching of resting eggs was induced in the laboratory on sliced and resuspended 1-cm depth-sections of sediment cores, collected at six stations in an archipelago area of the Gulf of Bothnia, Baltic Sea. The uppermost 5 cm of the sediment was studied. The most common species that hatched was Eurytemora affinis (Copepoda). Individuals from another copepod genus, Acartia, hatched in significant numbers only in the cores from two stations with low amphipod abundance. Cores from stations with high amphipod densities showed a deeper distribution of emerging E. affinis nauplii compared with stations with few amphipods; the oxidised sediment layer was also deeper at high M. affinis densities than at low. Total (0 to 5 cm strata pooled) number of hatched E. affinis nauplii was independent of amphipod density. This indicates that the effect of M. affinis on E. affinis eggs involves deeper burial due to bioturbation, rather than predation. Decreased benthic recruitment of zooplankton at localities with high M. affinis density is suggested, since more deeply positioned eggs are less likely to hatch. When hatching was induced in intact, non-sliced cores from one station, the number of E. affinis nauplii that hatched was on average 43% of the number that hatched in the upper centimetre of the sliced cores from the same station. This fraction (43%), if applied to the other stations, implied a potential for benthic recruitment of up to 80 000 ind m−2 for E. affinis. Due to its high abundance, M. affinis is likely to greatly reduce benthic recruitment of zooplankton in this system. Received: 17 September 1999 / Accepted: 23 February 2000  相似文献

Benthic resting eggs of rotifers, cladocerans and calanoid copepods were studied at two sites with different hydrographical and sediment properties off the SW coast of Finland, the northern Baltic Sea between 1991 and 1993. Vertical distribution of the resting eggs in the sediment was studied down to 10 cm depth, and hatching of the eggs extracted from different 1-cm thick sediment layers was experimentally tested. The larvae of eight mesozooplankton taxa emerged from the eggs: Calanoida (mostlyAcartia bifilosa), cladoceransBosmina spp.,Daphnia spp.,Evadne nordmanni, andPodon spp. (mostlyP. polyphemoides), and rotifersSynchaeta spp.,Keratella spp. andAsplanchna priodonta. Some calanoid and cladoceran eggs hatched after 7 mo storage of the sediment at 3°C. A few calanoid and cladoceran eggs hatched from the 8 to 10 cm deep sediment layer. Their age, estimated by means of137Cs analysis, was ca. 8 to 10 yr. Vertical distribution of the benthic eggs reflected the different sediment structures of the study sites. The eggs of all zooplankton taxa were more stratified in the laminated sediment than in the disturbed sediment. We suggest that the intensity of deep water mixing is the key factor for regulating the vertical distribution and hatching probability of mesozooplankton resting eggs, since it largely determines the stratification of the sedimenting material, distribution of oxygen within the sediment, and the living conditions of benthic animals causing bioturbation.  相似文献

Copepod resting eggs are abundant in the seabed of many bays and estuaries where they provide a potential source of recruits for growth of planktonic populations. In the northeastern Gulf of Mexico the copepod Centropages hamatus (Lillejeborg) occurs in the water column only during the late fall, winter and early spring. The species produces subitaneous and diapause eggs, and both egg types have been found in the seabed. We determined the longevity of these two egg types to ascertain their potential for contributing to the growth of the planktonic population and for sustaining a persistent egg bank. Eggs were collected from females and incubated in the laboratory under temperature and oxygen conditions chosen to simulate field conditions. The diapause eggs were also exposed to sulfide. The total hatching success of subitaneous eggs in two experiments declined from highs of 78 and 97% to zero after 60 and 90 d of exposure to anoxia. The total hatching success of diapause eggs that were exposed to anoxia for 90 d however was typically greater than 80%. Some diapause eggs hatched after being incubated under anoxia for 437 d. Diapause eggs survived longer at ambient field temperatures when incubated under anoxia (437 d) compared to normoxia (118 d). Exposure to sulfide did not result in greater mortality of diapause eggs compared to anoxia alone. Diapause eggs that were incubated at ambient field temperatures did not hatch when exposed to normoxia until the temperature dropped to <20 °C. The results of this study suggest that C.␣hamatus sustain a short-term reserve of subitaneous eggs in the seabed that provides recruits for the current year's population. The greater longevity of diapause eggs suggests that they sustain the seasonal reappearance of the species year after year in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico. However, the contribution of diapause eggs of C. hamatus from the Gulf of Mexico to a persistent egg bank is questionable since hatching ceased after 437 d. Eggs and larvae of the Senegal sole, Solea senegalensis Kaup, were reared from fertilization until the end of metamorphosis, which occurs by Day 17 after hatching at 19.5 °C. Changes in energy content and biomass quality were studied in terms of dry weight and of carbon, nitrogen and energy content. S. senegalensis spawned eggs of about 1 mm diameter which hatched 38 h after fertilization. Average dry weight of individual eggs was 46 μg, the chorion accounting for about 18% of total dry weight. Gross energy of recently fertilized sole eggs was approximately 1 J egg−1. From fertilization to hatching, eggs lost 8% of their total energy (chorion not included). After hatching, larvae lost 14% of their initial energy until the start of feeding which occurred about 48 h afterwards. The principal components catabolized during embryogenesis were carbon-rich compounds that decreased by 26%, while nitrogen-rich compounds decreased by only 10% and were practically unaltered from hatching to the start of feeding. Feeding larvae displayed constant growth during the period studied (specific growth rate on a dry weight basis was 0.26 d−1). The relative proportion of carbon and nitrogen content revealed an accumulation of high energy compounds in the days before metamorphosis. By Day 14, the energy content reached values similar to those of recently hatched embryos, but decreased again during metamorphosis. Received: 10 June 1998 / Accepted: 28 January 1999  相似文献

California grunion Leuresthes tenuis (Teleostei: Atherinopsidae) emerge from the ocean to spawn on beaches of southern California. Grunion eggs do not hatch at a set developmental age, but remain in the sand until turbulent surf at high tide washes them out to sea. In previously studied fishes and amphibians that lay eggs terrestrially, low oxygen is the trigger for hatching in water, and high oxygen tensions inhibit hatching. For the grunion, however, eggs placed in air, seawater and oil did not hatch at any at oxygen tension until they were agitated in fluid. Following agitation in seawater, all eggs hatched within several minutes. Grunion eggs in normoxic or hyperoxic water hatched significantly faster than eggs agitated at the lowest oxygen tensions. Mechanical agitation, not hypoxia, is the environmental trigger for hatching in California grunion eggs. Received: 15 May 1999 / Accepted: 5 April 2000  相似文献

Maintenance of estuarine zooplankton populations in large river-dominated estuaries with short residence times has been an intriguing subject of investigation. During three different hydrological seasons, autumn 1990, summer 1991, and spring 1992, we intensively sampled zooplankton populations in the estuarine turbidity maxima (ETM) region of the Columbia River estuary of Oregon and Washington, USA. One of the principal objectives was to investigate retention mechanisms of the predominant zooplankton species, the harpacticoid copepod Coullana canadensis and the epibenthic calanoid copepod Eurytemora affinis. In the ETM, C. canadensis densities mirrored those of turbidity gradients and were almost always greater at the river bed, while E. affinis densities were greater higher in the water column during the flood and lower in the water column during the ebb. Cross-correlation and time-series analyses determined that C. canadensis densities were highly positively correlated with turbidity and that most of the variability was explained by the lunisolar diurnal (K1) and principal lunar (M2) tidal components occurring once every 23.93  h and once every 12.42 h, respectively. This indicates that C. canadensis populations are most probably maintained in the estuary through the same near-bottom circulation features that trap and concentrate particles in the ETM. In contrast, densities of the more motile species E. affinis were highly correlated with negative velocities, or ebb tide, and most of the variability in population densities could be explained by the principal lunar tidal component; therefore, we hypothesize that this species is probably vertically migrating on a tidal cycle into different flow layers to avoid population losses out of the estuary. Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the survival rate of Monoporeia affinis in sulphide-rich sediment with oxic overlying water, and the effect of amphipod bioturbation on sulphide and oxygen profiles. As long as the oxygen content in the water is high, the amphipods seem to avoid quite high concentrations (>200 μmol l−1) of sulphide in the sediment by creating microhabitats where sulphide is rapidly oxidised. In cores with amphipods, a decrease of sulphide concentration was found in upper layers, while an increase of sulphide was found in deeper layers. Aggregation of amphipods generated pockets of light-brown sediment, characterised by high oxygen concentrations and no sulphide, and their depth was clearly dependent on amphipod density. This indicates that M. affinis has a potential to recolonise sulphide-rich sediments, devoid of macroscopic life, after the overlying water column has become oxygenated. Resting eggs of Acartia spp. (presumably A. bifilosa Giesbr.) at densities between 65 and 125 eggs cm-2 were found in sediment off the southern coast of Finland and represent the first observations of dormant calanoid eggs in the Baltic Sea. The highest egg densities were found at sediment depths between 4 and 8 cm. The hatching percentage varied between 0 and 90% in the different sediment layers and at different experimental temperatures (13, 16 and 19°C). Some nauplii emerged from the eggs extracted from sediment layers 9 to 10 cm beneath the surface layer and other nauplii emerged from eggs after 82 d of dark storage at 3°C. Light was not needed to trigger hatching; the nauplii were able to hatch in darkness when the eggs were resuspended in filtered seawater. Indirect evidence suggests that the marked spring peak of Acartia spp. nauplii seen in a monitoring data from the years 1973 to 1984 was derived from benthic eggs and not from spawning. The possible mechanisms for induction of hatching and the adaptive benefits of resting egg production for A. bifilosa are discussed.  相似文献

A San Diego population of the opisthobranch mollusc Alderia modesta (Lovén, 1844) exhibits poecilogony, the presence of two development modes within a single species. In spring, half of the adults spawned masses containing ∼300 eggs with a mean diameter of 68 μm. After 3 d, these egg masses hatched planktotrophic veligers with a maximum shell dimension of 116 μm. The remaining adults spawned masses containing ∼30 eggs with a mean diameter of 105 μm. These egg masses hatched after 5 to 6 d, releasing lecithotrophic larvae with a maximum shell dimension of 186 μm. About 1% of field-collected adults produced mixed clutches containing a continuum of larval sizes, spanning the size extremes of planktotrophy and lecithotrophy and hatching larvae with a mean maximum shell dimension of 152 μm. Adults producing planktotrophic and lecithotrophic larvae were interfertile, and no hybrid breakdown was observed through the F3 generation. When starved, adults which previously produced only lecithotrophic larvae switched to producing planktotrophic larvae or mixed clutches with both planktotrophic and lecithotrophic larvae. Sequence-polymorphisms from a portion of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I gene support the conclusion that the two reproductive morphs represent a single species. Most of the lecithotrophic larvae and a small percentage of the larvae from mixed clutches were metamorphically competent within 3 d of hatching. A. modesta is the only molluscan species as yet known to have both planktotrophic and pelagic lecithotrophic development within a single natural population. Cod (Gadus morhua L.) eggs may develop and hatch within temperatures of −1.5 to 12 °C, but little is known about the effects of very low temperatures on larval characteristics. Eggs of the Northeast Arctic cod (Gadus morhua) were incubated at 1, 5 or 8 °C from Day 1 after fertilisation until hatching, and transferred to 5 °C after hatching. Histological samples of the axial musculature were taken at hatching and 5 d after hatching, and the data on muscle cellularity from these samples were related to survival and hatching, size, developmental data and viability of the yolk sac larvae. All larvae hatched at the same developmental stage. Incubation of eggs at 1 °C produced shorter larvae with a larger yolk sac and more, small deep fibres at hatching than larvae from eggs incubated at 5 or 8 °C. The larval size difference was still present 5 d after hatching, a time at which the larvae from 1 °C-incubated eggs were less developed and less resistant to an acute viability stress test (65 ppt salinity). Although there were no differences between temperature groups in number and size of muscle fibres 5 d after hatching, the deep fibres of the 1 °C-group contained less myofibrils than the two other groups. The phenotype of the larvae at hatching was thus affected within these incubation temperatures. Although all groups were transferred to the same temperature after hatching, the lowest egg incubation temperature (1 °C) still had a negative effect 5 d after hatching, as these larvae were both smaller, less resistant to stress and had less functional muscles at the time of first feeding. Our conclusion is therefore that 1 °C is close to, or below, the lower thermal tolerance limit for normal functional development of Northeast Arctic cod. The results are discussed in relation to larval viability and recruitment of this species in the wild. Received: 4 February 1998 / Accepted: 10 July 1998  相似文献

Weight-specific contents of asorbic acid, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, vitamin B6, biotin, folate and vitamin B12 were analysed in natural zooplankton collected from a sea water lagoon in a halibut fry production plant. The samples of natural zooplankton were collected from April/May to the end of June during two consecutive spring blooms. For comparison, the same vitamins were measured in nauplii of Artemia franciscana, just after hatching and after enrichment for 24 and 48 h with a commercial diet. The changes in vitamin content in zooplankton, which consisted mainly of Temora longicornis, during the two spring blooms were <2.5-fold for each specific vitamin. The large number of high quality halibut fry produced using the plankton as a dietary source suggests that the plankton contained sufficient amounts of all water-soluble vitamins. With the exception of thiamin and ascorbic acid, Artemia– both newly hatched and enriched for 24 and 48 h – contained higher levels of water-soluble vitamins than natural zooplankton. Enrichment feeding of Artemia for 48 h stabilised or increased the level of the water-soluble vitamins. Received: 8 March 1999 / Accepted: 21 February 2000  相似文献

The membrane fluidity of the Baltic Sea crustaceans Gammarus spp. and Monoporeia affinis was studied in different seasons. Gammarus spp. were collected at a location with stable salinity and with temperature fluctuations from about 0 to 20 °C, and M. affinis at a deep location with stable salinity and a constant low temperature of about 1.5 to 4.5 °C. The membrane fluidity was measured from preparations enriched with plasma and mitochondrial membranes employing a fluorescence polarization technique using 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene (DPH) as a probe. The measurements were carried out without any preceding acclimation of the animals. In Gammarus spp., the membrane fluidity increased in the order: summer animals < autumn animals < spring animals. The differences between seasons were significant, with pronounced homeoviscous adaptation, and correlated well with the water temperature. It is suggested that in Gammarus spp., temperature is the determining factor for membrane fluidity. In M. affinis, the membranes of summer animals were the most fluid, and there was a significant difference only between summer and spring animals. In M. affinis the difference was not connected to the water temperature and no homeoviscous adaptation was noticed. The deep-water M. affinis experience a long period of fresh food deficiency, which probably affects the membrane fluidity. Although there are seasonal differences in fluidities between Gammarus spp. and M. affinis, it is interesting to note that all data obtained from M. affinis settled between the polarization lines of spring and summer Gammarus spp., regardless of the prevailing temperatures. Abundance and distribution of calanoid resting eggs in sediment were examined in 1988–1989 in an enclosed marine basin (Svartatjønn; western Norway). The basin undergoes rotenone treatment and draining every winter. Egg densities were highest in autumn, when up to 2 × 106 eggs m–2 were found, and lowest in summer. Egg densities were also highest in the deeper parts of the basin and in the upper 1 cm of sediment. Hatching was initiated in late January by pumping warmer deep water from the outside area into the basin. Evidence is given for resting-egg formation inEurytemora affinis Poppe, 1880 andAcartia clausi Gurney, 1931 (present phenotype reclassified asA. teclae by Bradford 1976: N. Z. Jl mar. Freshwat. Res. 10: 159–202). Seasonal differences in inhibition of hatching, together with the longevity and tolerance of these eggs, strongly suggest that they are diapause eggs.  相似文献

The effect of temperature on the development and hatching of resting eggs of the Ponto-Caspian Cercopagis pengoi was studied experimentally in the Gulf of Finland, Baltic Sea. Morphological changes were monitored as the development of the resting eggs proceeded. Sexual reproduction of the C. pengoi population in the Gulf of Finland was evaluated by combining the data from hatching experiments and resting egg abundances in the sediment. Development time of resting eggs was dependent on temperature: increase in the temperature shortened the time needed until hatching. Hatching success was also dependent on incubation temperature. Almost sixfold increase in hatching success was detected when temperature increased two degrees above the storage temperature. Average resting egg abundances varied between 0.16 and 0.49 eggs cm−3 in the 0–6 cm sediment layer.  相似文献

The dietary habits of the pelagic mysid Mysismixta were studied during its growing season at an open sea location in the Gulf of Finland, the northern Baltic Sea. Stomach samples were taken twice a month from June to September 1997. The most abundant phytoplankton taxa in the stomachs were diatoms and dinoflagellates, and copepods and cladocerans were the most abundant zooplankton identified. A clear change was found in the diets during the study period. Small mysids (3 to 6 mm) fed on sedimented phytoplankton in the early summer (90% benthic particles in June) but shifted gradually to a more pelagic and carnivorous diet (>40% pelagic particles, consisting of ca. 60% zooplankton in September). Seasonal changes in mysid capture ability as well as food availability were suggested to affect the diet composition of mysids during their growth. The ratio of pelagic and benthic food particles could – irrespective of the season – be explained by mysid size, whereas the zooplankton:phytoplankton ratio was better explained by season. The stomach analysis suggests that the mysids needed to attain a threshold size of 8 to 11 mm to initiate feeding on the more evasive copepods. Mysids also started to grow faster at the same time as the proportion of copepods increased in the diet, which suggests that copepods are an important energy source for M. mixta in late summer. Finally, a comparison was made between the M. mixta diet and that of the less abundant M. relicta. The diets of the two pelagic mysid species overlapped by 75% (Schoener's index). The main difference was due to M. mixta eating more zooplankton and pelagic material than M. relicta. Received: 15 September 1999 / Accepted: 18 January 2000  相似文献

Few investigations have examined the occurrence of zooplankton resting eggs in the sea bed of waters deeper than 20 m. In this study the distribution and abundance of planktonic copepods and their benthic resting eggs in coastal waters off northern California, U.S.A., were determined and related to environmental parameters (temperature, salinity, depth, and sediment grain size). Sediment cores, net tows, and CTD profiles were obtained in April and October 1989, and February, April, and October 1990. Water depths in the study area ranged from approximately 60 to 120 m. The mean abundance of eggs was as high as 1.2×105 m-2 for Acartia clausi Giesbrecht and 1.9×105 m-2 for Tortanus discaudatus Thompson and Scott. These egg concentrations are comparable to those reported previously for shallower more protected regions. The abundance of eggs in the sediments decreased with increasing depth of the water column. For the region as a whole, eggs were least abundant in muddy sediments. The mean abundance of eggs in the sea bed also varied seasonally and annully. Benthic resting eggs of A. clausi were more abundant in April 1989 than in April 1990, and adults of the species were never found in the plankton samples. The lack of adults is not unusual since results of previous studies indicate that A. clausi is a cold-water species, and in this region water temperatures are colder in summer, than in winter, due to upwelling. Temperature and salinity data indicated that the upwelling season had commenced by the time of the April 1990, but not the April 1989 sampling. Thus, the reduced abundance of benthic eggs in April 1990 may have been due to egg-hatching in response to reduced temperatures. The results suggest that the presence of A. clausi in coastal waters off northern California is linked to recruitment from benthic resting eggs.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to examine the morphology and hatching success of eggs, either spawned by freshly caught planktonic copepods or recovered from bottom sediments in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Collections were made between August 1992 and September 1995. Eggs of nine species were described and these differed in their diameter, color and surface attributes. Three types of eggs were distinguished: subitaneous, diapause, and delayed-hatching. Three species, Labidocera aestiva Wheeler, Acartia tonsa Dana, and Centropages velificatus (Oliveira) produced only subitaneous eggs. Hatching success varied greatly among these species. Two species, Labidocera mirabilis Fleminger and Centropages hamatus (Lilljeborg) produced diapause eggs and subitaneous eggs. The length of the refractory phase of the diapause eggs differed greatly both within and between these two species. A third type of dormant egg, delayed-hatching, was recognized in Labidocera scotti Giesbrecht and Pontella meadi Wheeler. The existence of delayed-hatching eggs may be an adaptive response of subtropical species to less seasonal fluctuation. Based upon morphological characteristics of the eggs and rearing of nauplii to an identifiable stage, benthic dormant eggs of eight species of calanoid copepods were also identified. Scleractinian corals experience a wide range of flow regimes which, coupled with colony morphology, can affect the ability of corals to capture zooplankton and other particulate materials. We used a field enclosure oriented parallel to prevailing oscillatory flow on the forereef at Discovery Bay, Jamaica, to investigate rates of zooplankton capture by corals of varying morphology and polyp size under realistic flow speeds. Experiments were carried out from 1989 to 1992. Particles (Artemia salina cysts) and naturally occurring zooplankton attracted into the enclosures were used as prey for the corals Madracis mirabilis (Duchassaing and Michelotti) (narrow branches, small polyps), Montastrea cavernosa (Linnaeus) (mounding, large polyps), and Porites porites (Pallas) (wide branches, small polyps). This design allowed corals to be used without removing them or their prey from the reef environment, and avoided contact of zooplankton with net surfaces. Flow speed had significant effects on capture rate for cysts (M. mirabilis), total zooplankton (M. mirabilis, M. cavernosa), and non-copepod zooplankton (M. mirabilis). Zooplankton prey capture increased with prey concentration for M. mirabilis and M. cavernosa, over a broad range of concentrations, indicating that saturation of the feeding response had not occurred until prey density was over 104 items m−3, a concentration at least an order of magnitude greater than the normal range of reef zooplankton concentrations. Location of cyst capture on coral surfaces was not uniform; for M. cavernosa, sides and tops of mounds captured most particles, and for P. porites, capture was greatest near branch tops, but was close to uniform for M. mirabilis branches in all flow conditions. The present study confirms laboratory flume results, and field results for other species, suggesting that many coral species experience particle flux and encounter rate limitations at low flow speeds, decreasing potential zooplankton capture rates. Moerisia lyonsi Boulenger (Hydrozoa) medusae and benthic polyps were found at 0 to 5‰ salinity in the Choptank River subestuary of Chesapeake Bay, USA. This species was introduced to the bay at least 30 years before 1996. Medusae and polyps of M. lyonsi are very small and inconspicuous, and may occur widely, but unnoticed, in oligohaline waters of the Chesapeake Bay system and in other estuaries. Medusae consumed copepod nauplii and adults, but not barnacle nauplii, polychaete and ctenophore larvae or tintinnids, in laboratory experiments. Predation rates on copepods by medusae increased with increasing medusa diameter and prey densities. Feeding rates on copepod nauplii were higher than on adults and showed no saturation over the range of prey densities tested (1 to 64 prey l−1). By contrast, predation on copepod adults was maximum (1 copepod medusa−1 h−1) at 32 and 64 copepods l−1. Unexpectedly, M. lyonsi colonized mesocosms at the Horn Point Laboratory during the spring and summer in 4 years (1994 to 1997), and reached extremely high densities (up to 13.6 medusae l−1). Densities of copepod adults and nauplii were low when medusa densities were high, and estimated predation effects suggested that M. lyonsi predation limited copepod populations in the mesocosms. Polyps of M. lyonsi asexually produced both polyp buds and medusae. Rates of asexual reproduction increased with increasing prey availability, from an average total during a 38 d experiment of 9.5 buds polyp−1 when each polyp was fed 1 copepod d−1, to an average total of 146.7 buds polyp−1 when fed 8 copepods d−1. The maximum daily production measured was 8 polyp buds and 22 medusae polyp−1. The colonizing potential of this hydrozoan is great, given the high rates of asexual reproduction, fairly wide salinity tolerance, and existence of a cyst stage. On the roofs of subtidal crevices, the giant cuttlefish (Sepia apama) of southern Australia lays clutches of lemon-shaped eggs which hatch after 3 to 5 mo. Diffusion of oxygen through the capsule and chorion membrane to the perivitelline fluid and embryo was modelled using the equation O2 = G O2(P O2outP O2in), where O2 = rate of oxygen consumption, G O2 = oxygen conductance of the capsule, and P O2 values = oxygen partial pressures across the capsule. During development, O2 rose exponentially as the embryo grew, reaching 5.5 μl h−1 at hatching. Throughout development, the capsule dimensions enlarged by absorption of water into the perivitelline space, increasing G O2 by a combination of increasing surface area, and decreasing thickness of the capsule. These processes maintained P O2in high enough to allow unrestricted O2 until shortly before hatching. Diffusion limitation of respiration in hatching-stage embryos was demonstrated by (1) increased embryonic O2 when P O2out was experimentally raised, (2) greater O2 of resting individuals immediately after hatching, and (3) reduced O2 of hatchlings at experimental P O2 levels higher than P O2in before hatching. Thus, low P O2in may be the stimulus to hatch. Potential problems of diffusive gas-exchange are mitigated by the relatively low incubation temperature (12 °C), which may be a factor limiting the distribution of the species to cool, southern waters.
