The objective of the study was to assess the attitude of Edinburgh University medical students towards computers and to evaluate the effects of changes in the curriculum and intercalated BSc towards computer knowledge. During March to November 1995 a questionnaire was distributed in lectures, seminars and tutorials to all Edinburgh University medical students. Overall, 65% of students returned the questionnaire, divided equally between both genders. Only 2% of students had not used a computer in the previous year. The most frequent application used was E-mail and the most frequent site, the Greenfield suite micro lab, within the medical school. The average score for self-perceived computer knowledge on a scale of 0–10 was 4.19. This score was significantly higher for the students who own a computer and who have an intercalated BSc honours degree as well as the pre-clinical students compared to the clinical students. There is also a strong correlation between computer use and doing a second year special option module. With regards to attitude towards computers, 86% of students agreed that computer skills will be beneficial to them in their future career and 62% of all students wanted a structured course in computer use as part of the MB ChB course. There has been a general increase in computer literacy amongst the medical students in Edinburgh. This is specially so for the pre-clinical students who have had the brunt of the changes in the curriculum. The tendency for both the lower knowledge and use by the clinical students can, in part, be due to the accessibility of computers to these students.  相似文献

To assess specialty choice and understanding of primary care among Japanese medical students, all students from seven Japanese medical schools (three public and four private) were surveyed, using a written questionnaire. A total of 3377 students provided data for the study. Of the students surveyed, 89.8% wanted to become clinicians, and 79.3% wanted to have general clinical ability. About half of the respondents, 54.9%, replied that they had some, or great, interest in primary care, but it was found that their understanding of primary care was inadequate. Almost half (56.3%) of the students answered that they had some idea of what a general practitioner did. This proportion was nearly the same through all years of medical school. While 1245 (36.9%) students (most of them in the fifth or sixth year) replied that they had received some clinical training while working in hospitals, only 203 (6.0%) students had worked in private clinics (the sites where most primary care is still provided), and 129 (3.8%) students had experience in providing home visits and home care. An even greater number, 64.3%, replied that they had inadequate information about the career options available to them. The study found that although many Japanese medical students want to obtain broad clinical competence, their understanding of primary care is insufficient. In order to increase the number of primary care providers the system of medical education in Japan must provide primary care doctors to act as role models, and must make available information about postgraduate primary care programmes. These programmes need to be increased, as do rewarding positions for programme graduates.  相似文献

Summary. Medical informatics ( MI ) has been introduced to medical students in several countries. Before outlining a course plan it was necessary to conduct a survey on students' computer literacy. A questionnaire was designed for students, focusing on knowledge and previous computer experience. The questions reproduced a similar questionnaire submitted to medical students from North Carolina University in Chapel Hill ( NCU ). From the results it is clear that although almost 80% of students used computers, less than 30% used general purpose applications, and utilization of computer-aided search of databases or use in the laboratory was exceptional. Men reported more computer experience than women in each area investigated by our questionnaire but this did not appear to be related to academic performance, age or course. Our main objectives when planning an MI course were to give students a general overview of the medical applications of computers and instruct them in the use of computers in future medical practice. As our medical school uses both Apple Macintosh and IBM compatibles, we decided to provide students with basic knowledge of both. The programme was structured with a mix of theoretico-practical lectures and personalized practical sessions in the computer laboratory. As well as providing a basic overview of medical informatics, the course and computer laboratory were intended to encourage other areas of medicine to incorporate the computer into their teaching programmes.  相似文献

This study evaluates the attachment of preclinical medical students to rural general practitioners in Queensland. The expectations of participating students were assessed before the experience, and compared with their realizations. Perceptions of their own clinical skills, and the type of medicine they want to practise were assessed both before and after.
Doctors taking part felt stimulated by the experience, and confimed that the presence of a student is readily accepted by patients, and causes minimal practice disruption. Students saw this attachment as providing motivation for their further studies, and relevance to their preclinical work. Clinical sophistication would not appear to be necessary for considerable benefit to be derived from the experience.  相似文献

A questionnaire was administered to two groups of medical students, one preclinical and the other clinical, to assess their career choices, opinions of six specialties (including internal medicine, general practice, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics and psychiatry as well as surgery) and anxieties about psychiatry. It was found that both groups of students conceptualized clinicians according to stereotypes which were modified but not abated by clinical exposure. Although the clinical students compared to preclinical students attributed more positive personality traits to psychiatrists, students interested in taking up careers in psychiatry were few in both groups. Compared to the preclinical class, clinical students were less worried about disturbed patients and emotional involvement with patients, but were more concerned about their deficiency in knowledge and skills relevant to psychiatry.  相似文献

This study deals with personality variables of medical students in relation to their academic success in the preclinical stage. One hundred and one students completed the 16PF Questionnaire at the beginning of their medical course and the scores were analysed in relation to their marks obtained at the end of the 2–year preclinical stage. This study shows that the 16PF Questionnaire can be a useful instrument for identifying personality variables in candidates who are likely to have academic problems and those who are likely to do well in the preclinical stage of a medical course. Students of urban origin and the eldest in the family performed better in their preclinical years. Performance was not related to sex, ethnic group, family size or entrance qualification into medicine. Personality variables of being enthusiastic, venturesome, self-opinionated, imaginative, experimenting, resourceful and driven correlate positively with performance, whereas being self-assured has negative correlation. Problem students were more reserved, emotionally less stable and more apprehensive than non-problem students.  相似文献

A study was carried out to investigate the change in attitudes towards physically disabled people of a group of fifty-eight medical students during the first 3 years of their course. The students attended a newly established medical school which has developed a curriculum without the traditional division into preclinical and clinical years and where contact with patients occurs from the first year. Results demonstrated that, as expected, at the start of the course the attitudes of females towards disabled people were more positive than those of males. Also, a significant change in attitudes was found after 3 years, both males and females demonstrating more positive attitudes toward physical disability. The differences between males and females were maintained. The relationship between these students' attitudes and their behaviour was discussed and proposals for further research to investigate this are outlined.  相似文献

Teaching about tobacco and related diseases is essential in the undergraduate medical course in order for students to gain knowledge about smoking and how to intervene with patients who smoke. The objective of the study was to assess students'smoking-related behaviour, knowledge and attitudes towards tobacco, and perceptions of their future role as doctors. Data were collected from two consecutive years of year 1 and year 5 medical students at the University of New South Wales, Sydney. A total of 594 (79%) of students across the 2 years completed the survey: 90% of year 1 students, and 69% of year 5 students. The daily smoking rate among the total medical students was 2.9%: 11.8% in year 1 (2.3% daily, 9.5% occasional) and 13.7% in year 5 (3.3% daily, 10.4% occasional). There were significantly more male than female smokers in year 5 (P < 0.05). The overall smoking rates for males in years 1 and 5 were 12.4% and 19.3%, and the smoking rates for females were 11.2% and 8%. Knowledge about the causal role of tobacco in the development of specific diseases improved significantly from year 1 to year 5 (P < 0.001). Nevertheless, in year 5 there remained a lack of knowledge about the relationship of smoking and some diseases. Fifty-seven per cent of students thought that their current knowledge was sufficient to counsel smokers, with year 5 students (89%) being far more positive than year 1 students (34%) (P < 0.001). Teaching medical students about smoking-related diseases and a patient-centred smoking cessation intervention results in an increase in knowledge, as well as positive perceptions about their future role in intervening with smokers.  相似文献

Undergraduate courses in British medical schools are changing following recommendations from the General Medical Council. Increasing emphasis has been placed on teaching in the community. Nottingham Medical School has pioneered the teaching of basic clinical skills in primary care during the pre-clinical course to help produce an integrated curriculum. This qualitative study evaluated the first two years of the new early clinical experience course at Nottingham by using interviews with 19 students and their GP tutors. Students claimed to have gained confidence in talking to patients, their understanding of the role of the doctor and the importance of the doctor-patient relationship. Students were less confident about examining patients and some reported having had little opportunity to practice examination skills. Half the students thought that the early clinical visits had helped them to understand and be more motivated to learn their basic medical sciences course. The newly recruited GP teachers were highly motivated, very positive about the early clinical teaching and all wanted to continue to teach the pre-clinical students. Difficulties in providing the course included communication with students and staff, organization of student travel and variation in the quality of teaching. However, the Nottingham early clinical experience course has shown that basic clinical skills can be successfully taught to pre-clinical students in primary care.  相似文献

One hundred and one students at different levels of their medical education were surveyed as to their views about inclusion of medical ethics in their curriculum. The results showed that 88% of the students feel that medical ethics has a place in their curriculum, and 84% rated medical ethics to be of High to Critical Importance to good medical care. They tended to read infrequently about medical ethics, which they would like integrated at all levels of the curriculum, particularly the clinical years. The more senior students were less sensitive to ethical issues. The students mentioned only dramatic issues in their accounts of encounters with cases involving ethical issues. It is felt that a wide gap is left in the education of these students if medical ethics is not included in a positive way in their curriculum.  相似文献

Although medical ethics has become a part of the curriculum of almost every medical school, medical students' perceptions of the value of medical ethics have not been documented. This paper reports the evaluations given by 137 preclinical and 216 clinical medical students to different levels of medical ethics teaching at the College of Human Medicine and the College of Osteopathic Medicine of Michigan State University. The results indicate (1) that students' satisfaction with medical ethics teaching is directly linked to how much they receive, (2) that students overwhelmingly prefer the input of both ethicists and doctors to teaching by either alone, and (3) that a preclinical medical ethics course followed by explicit medical ethics teaching in clinical training is a promising model for achieving an adequate level of medical ethics teaching within medical education.  相似文献

Monash University medical students were surveyed to determine whether they represented the cultural diversity of their community. A total of 878 students completed self reports which showed they originated from forty countries and spoke forty-one languages. The medical school academic intake procedure had selected students from many ethnic groups reflecting the cultural diversity of the community. All had passed the Higher School Certificate English Examination or equivalent to enter the course. A total of 21% reported fluency in a language other than English, and 62% reported having a usable other language in which they were not fluent. The number of fluent languages spoken was constant over the medical course while the number of languages in which students were not fluent decreased significantly. Findings refuted the stereotype that Australian medical students were all monolingual Anglo-Saxons. Training in use of interpreters, and positive discrimination for medical school entry were considered.  相似文献

This study investigates the reasons for entry to medicine and the career perspectives of phase III medical students of the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). The majority of the students were Malays from low socio-economic backgrounds who entered medical school after completing a 2–year matriculation course. An interest in medicine and helping people were the two main stated reasons for entry to medical school. A group of students wishing to work in private practice was identified. In comparison to the rest of the study body, students in the group were: not well prepared to enter medical school; dissatisfied with the course; and subject to family influences. A desire for monetary gain motivated their choice of medicine as a career. Overall, 13% of the students wished to change career because they were dissatisfied with their experience of medicine as undergraduates.
The study did not find a significant difference in career intentions between female and male medical students. However, women were less likely to seek entrance into private practice or pursue formal postgraduate education. The choice of surgery as a career was confined to men. About 90% of the students had already decided on their future specialty. Four well-established specialties were their most popular choices. The gender of the students had no significant influences of the decision to continue into postgraduate education. The proportion of female students who wished to marry doctors was significantly higher than for male students.  相似文献

INTRODUCTION: How do students reflect as they strive for some control of learning early in their clinical activities? The purpose of this study was to examine the reflection-in-learning profile of medical students as they started their clinical apprenticeship. METHODS: A measure of reflection-in-learning was used to appraise the level and direction of change of reflection in relation to a course experience. The study involved 103 medical students of both sexes who were beginning clinical activities. Assessments of self-regulation of learning, of the meaningfulness of the learning experience, and of diagnostic thinking were also obtained. RESULTS: The results showed that 81% of the students had an increase in scores for reflection-in-learning between the beginning and the end of a course. At the end of the course, the level of reflection-in-learning was significantly associated with self-perceived competence for self-regulated learning and with the meaningfulness of the learning experience. In the following term, students who had high reflection-in-learning scores at the end of the course had higher grade-point averages and greater self-reported diagnostic ability in comparison with those with low scores. CONCLUSIONS: There was some evidence of an improved quality of reflection as the students strive for some control of learning. Overall, the findings support the idea that a greater effort at reflection is associated with a more positive learning experience. They also suggest that reflection-in-learning is related to readiness for self-regulation of learning and may be conducive to enhanced diagnostic ability. In conclusion, measuring reflection-in-learning may be a useful tool in the appraisal of medical students' learning profiles.  相似文献

This study set out to investigate the attitudes of preclinical medical students to various specialties. It specifically aimed to measure a range of attitudes to nine medical specialties, by nearly 200 students. Multivariate analysis showed that the scale has various interpretable dimensions which measured such things as the way the specialty is taught in medical school, the recognized efficacy of treatment, type of patients, etc. Univariate analysis revealed numerous significant differences between the subjects' perceptions of the different specialties. It was concluded that the questionnaire provided a reliable, robust and valid instrument for the measurement of medical student attitudes to any or all specialties and may be particularly useful for research in this field.  相似文献

Summary. The authors describe the problem of impairment of medical students from the point of view of mental health professionals who have directed a large and successful evaluation and referral service for students suffering from a wide array of stress-related and mental disorders. They outline the nature of the impairment problems, the history of the efforts at their medical school to address these problems, and their recent experience in providing mental health services to students who are referred for evaluation and treatment. Diagnostic data, referral and the implications of mental disorders for medical students are discussed. The authors offer some suggestions for the formation of student well-being committees prior to the implementation of student assistance programmes to address the problems of substance abuse.  相似文献

Elaborated learning in undergraduate medical education   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Southampton Medical School holds its major examination of basic knowledge after rather than before students enter their first clinical attachments. An interview survey investigated its educational effects, and found that students adopt one of four revision approaches. The most successful, not just in terms of examination grade but more particularly in students' subsequent ability to retrieve and use the knowledge gained, occurred when students related their preclinical revision to their clinical experiences. One of these approaches, an elaboration of knowledge, is considered to be essential for effective clinical thinking yet is probably rare elsewhere in medical education since it appears to be a consequence of a particular curricular arrangement. An explanation is given in terms of current thinking in cognitive psychology, and this challenges the theoretical assumptions on which other research in medical education has been uncritically based. Some implications for medical education and further research are discussed.  相似文献

Universities need to ensure that clinical undergraduates are educated in the use of computers in medical, nursing, dental and veterinary practice. We surveyed 875 students at Glasgow University to determine their computer literacy and attitudes to the use of computers. One in five students had not used a computer during the last year and 16% thought themselves to be a complete novice with computers. Medical students were more likely to have used a computer recently compared to dental and nursing students. For one in four students, the idea of working with a computer makes them anxious. Seventy per cent of students wanted more use of computers in the curriculum and 30% applied to attend an optional computing course in the summer. Although a third of students had not used a computer at school, the proportion had increased a little in recent years. At Glasgow University, changes need to be made to the undergraduate curriculum to teach students the use of computers in clinical practice. With a few exceptions, there is no reason to believe that this does not apply to other British universities.  相似文献

The College of Medicine at the Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) in Oman took up the challenge of moving away from a didactic emphasis in the teaching of family and community health by actively involving students in health care, requiring some clinical skills, as early as possible. This paper describes the experience of the Department of Family and Community Health at SQU of the feasibility of training first-year medical students in the measurement of blood pressure within a few days. Our experience showed that proper training before starting field-work can teach clinical skills to students who have had no prior exposure to medical subjects. There was a strong correlation between the measurements of blood pressure of 638 individuals by the students and the supervisors. This experience at SQU has encouraged us to implement the idea of family- and community-based clinical exposure for every class. Teaching of clinical skills is feasible in the field for new entrants, provided there is adequate orientation beforehand and skilled supervision of the students in small groups.  相似文献
